"What would it take to get you to relocate?"

With numerous cities offering incentives to energize communities and tax bases, what would attract you to leave where you are now?

Programs like these:

NYC subway commutes are an hour minimum if you live in Brooklyn but it doesn’t feel that long on a train.

Driving tho?

she's probably taking the entire communting process into account, which is very understandable. Especially if she has to transfer from the MARC over to Metro or even a bus...

shit killed me. i hated that fucking job and the 2 hour commute thinking about it just made it worse. For a good while, i was on an assignment in Gaithersburg and that commute wasnt bad (still long in distance but not bad traffic). But Bethesda... sheeiitttt, I'd be like 5 miles from the office and 45 mins away.

on the bus from there to Bethesda.

Did what I had to do for that bread because a similar gig in Baltimore was paying almost $15k less per year.

Now, I value my time a bit more.

I felt the exact same way. I wouldn't even consider the commute again unless my wife was willing to make a move to be closer to there and if the salary was significantly greater than what I'm at right now.

off top:

tax-free relocation bonus

same salary (at least) with lower cost of living

stability of new gig (I have many stories of cats who relocated then their jobs went poof when things didn't pan out the way the company projected)

the relocation expenses must be covered (move my stuff ...quickly ... with insurance)

It's still rated second best public elementary in the city.

There was a similar place equidistant from both of those that I toured in the Fall, the realtor kept highlighting the specific school zone as an attraction.

I lived 'ova West' and got accepted into their gifted and talented middle school program. I went there for ONE DAY.. Mom dukes was like, this shit too far.

I asked about the school because while I figured that's what you were talkign about, i didnt see it on the listing as the closest school. The way the schools are zoned can be tricky.

Not everything is hood but, like said before, going a few blocks in different directions could land you in a different world.

For example, there is Ten Hills. Step outside of there, on one side, and find yourself in Edmonson Village. Go the other way and you’ll end up down on Franklin Avenue near the Beechfield and Irvington neighborhoods. Go a few more blocks north and you’d end up in West Hills or Rodney Heights which are two nice neighborhoods.

Paid for relocation costs
Mo money, especially if its a higher COL area

I've thought about going to CA where company HQ is. I think I would definitely like the location more. But any place that you would actually want to live in is more expensive than where I am now, which is already expensive. My Mom is here too. Anyway I just bought a house and after moving 10 times in as many years, I'm good on that for a while.

Recently I was thinking about people who have to move because their job requires them too. That's crazy to me. If it came down to it I would probably do it but it just seems messed up for your employer to make you change up your whole life like that. That job better be GOOD.

The main reason we are still in our current area is the support network for our kids. My parents are around the corner and so are my wife's. My kids are in the school district my mom taught in for 30 years and retired from, so everyone in the schools knows us well. Our family is there to help when it comes to babysitting - our youngest is with my parents two days a week which helps with daycare costs.

We used to think that once the kids got old enough to not need childcare we would have options to move if we wanted, but that doesn't seem realistic at all. Separate from regular childcare, right now if we want to book a vacation for ourselves and leave the kids with family that is easy. We also realize how hard it would be for our parents if we moved farther away - grandkids really keep grandparents young. There are studies showing this and we absolutely see it in our lives.

For us to leave all of that one of use would have to be making so much more money that it would be a no-brainer. Separate from advances in cost of living, tax incentives, real estate benefits, or moving expenses. We are both in jobs/companies that we can work anywhere in the country, so if one of us came up big the other could keep working the same job while in another state. Unless it was such an increase that one of use could be a stay at home parent, which might also be necessary for us to leave our support network.

What is the point of having the big car, house cool job if you can't enjoy it with people you love. If those people include extended family than I see how it can be hard to part with.

I think moving is overrated. I moved a lot for about 3 years and the uncertainty was no fun.

But I am starting to wonder, someone build a support network wherever they go?

Grew up in Tulsa, moved away for 20 years, moved back 2 years ago from Atlanta. I worked remote for my same company for the first 16 months back (before this program started, damnit) and the difference in cost of living and everything else are pretty fantastic compared to Atlanta. Quality of life, on the other hand, you just have to be ready to expect a lot less (although it is leaps and bounds a better place than when I was growing up here). Food sucks, attractions are limited, not living in a hub also sucks for flying. And the politics...well...
But I moved back 70% for family reasons and 30% for "Atlanta is getting too damn expensive, and it isn't expensive" reasons. I bought a 1500 sqft home for $165K that would have been $600K+ in the current Atlanta real estate market. The program that is out there and linked is sponsored by George Kaiser, who is giving away money like crazy trying to boost up the image, standing and economic diversity of the city/region. If you had no ties (mortgage, family) and could work remote while maintaining decent pay, that program is a good chunk of free money with both the $10K cash and discounted luxury apartment they give you all for just a one-year commitment. If I were still living in Atlanta, and it were only a year and I wasn't married, I would do it in a heartbeat.

If someone wants me to move back north and mess with that ice & snow, they're gonna have to pay me a GRIP.

I've only been to Detroit out of the cities in the OP and it's closer to where I grew up. I don't know much about the other 3.

If/when I ever get to a place without snow and a beach within close proximity, thats a wrap for me. There's no going back. I was in SF last week where it was 50-60 degrees and people had beanies on and shit. Someone said thats pretty much the coldest it gets there.

I started doing the relocation math there for a minute like https://media1.tenor.com/images/fb3f2d1e814190100a4ae401b1660d5b/tenor.gif?itemid=6081931

Then I realized I'd have to go from a house to a studio apartment https://media.giphy.com/media/dnkTPFmjAxyUg/giphy.gif

I do this every time I go there.

hard to beat San Diego for weather.

We have increasing bad traffic, a super high cost of living.

But the weather is excellent.

Outdoor activities such as hiking/beach/parks is excellent.

California's health care is excellent.

People here are 80% NOT rednecks assholes.

Plus I'm in a situation where my condo is 100% paid for AND I work for a great company that provides almost unlimited stability (it's a hospital system.)

1)So I'd have to have a stable job that pays well.
2)Not be around a bunch of rednecks
3)Weather where it only under 40 degrees at night and few a few months a year, and where there's little rain or snow.
4)Can't be much hotter than San Diego.
4)A place where I could by a nice condo/house for under $280k (what I'd next from selling mine today.)
5)Can't be a state that refused the Obamacare medicare expansion.

Basically in the U.S. there is no other place.

To move from here there'd have to be the big earthquake or some sort of radiation/massive deadly pollution.

I won't touch that , but.

>Talk to me about State Obama Medicaid Expansion?

When the ACA (Obamacare was passed) it offered states to pay for expansion of their mecidaid befits - for FREE. Free money.

A bunch states refused to take free money to help their residents becuase they fucking hate Obama.

They are:
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
Kansas
Mississippi
Missouri
North Carolina
Oklamahoma
South carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Wyoming

Also:
Some rejected it, but then voters put a measure on the ballot and forced it.
Idaho
Maine
Montana
Nebraska
Wisonsin

You can't trust ANY of these states to do the right thing for their citizens EVER. From now on - even when everyone has died in 100 years and new citizens are governing.

main thing holding me here at the moment is the yearly bonus which i should get in april.

i would obviously be looking for good money. if the rent is low or the pay is enough to cover the additional cost then that would be good.

i dont mind cold weather as long as it wont factor much into the cost to live there.

would be nice to get more concerts so if im within 30 mins to a decent metro i should be good.

wouldnt want to be in a hostile environment, would want to make my sure my kind are welcome there lol

i might seriously start looking into some options to move back to detroit. need to look into what other cities are offering incentives to move and weigh my options.

a more educated and/or skilled workforce that would help to increase tax revenue. Ultimately, said increase would eventually help to revitalize the city. That’s why all of these incentives exist. The average household income here is like $30k per year. With qualified people that can take on the higher paying jobs and that will live in the city rather than commuting, Baltimore can grow/change through an increase in that revenue. This is what I believe the city is up to and is at the basis of what’s been happening here.

Sadly, it’s become apparent to me that there is a large swath of people who aren’t cared about at all. The care is feigned but ain’t all the way serious. The recently re-elected Governor wants them gone. The current Mayor don’t really give a damn because she’s in business with the Governor who’s a real estate developer.

I know a ton of educated and/or career-oriented people here. Most of the Black ones live outside of the city. And the White ones ain’t moving back into the city as fast as some would have hoped. So, yeah! These recruiting efforts are geared towards keeping those younger college educated folks here instead of them leaving after they finish at Hopkins, Loyola, UMBC, Towson, and Goucher. I don’t think they care about the grads from Morgan and Coppin. Hmmmm! I wonder why that is.

before we make a move. She needs/wants that rate before a long distance move is made.

And there are two places that we'd really like to go to. Either back to ATL or to Seattle.

Atlanta's suburban politics are fascinating. https://www.citylab.com/equity/2018/11/eagles-landing-vote-secede-stockbridge-georgia/575371/

I love Seattle.

She left private industry 8 years ago and entered the gubment as a GS-7. She’s up to a 13 right now. She says that she needs the 14 to be sure that the potential decrease in locale pay, which would decrease if we went back to ATL, is negated (somewhat offfset in her favor) by the increase in grade.

I think the only other states where pay adjust is better are Jersey, California and Connecticut...where property taxes stay high.

is that the Atlanta area, today, is not much cheaper than living here in Baltimore. You gonna pay to live nicely in either place.

I would take a pay cut to keep my job and move to Miami. Is there another cool coastal city that needs remote workers?

I know a tide is changing in the US where diversity is trendy. But I really like meeting, seeing and interacting with people who are different, not just in race but thought, style and identity.

DC is becoming better and better every year. I see DC as a great base. I can visit other cities and take vacation, but for now DC works for me.

How long does it take to find a good barber in connecticut and tulsa?

I need diversity, stuff to do, a good barber, and a decent social scene. Bonus points for alcoves where I can get this fuckery off but lay low from time to time.

Beyond being the home to Yale, it's a very Black and Latino small city. You'll find a barber easily.
Tulsa, the Greenwood neighborhood, I'm sure there are long established shops.

And Texas, in the summertime, is unnecessarily and unforgivably HOT!

Our summers are hot & humid as hell. But our winters are fantastic (70-80 and sunny). That's a great tradeoff for me. If I never see another snowflake, I'm good!
