"I have a genius as a son"

just got back from his parent teacher conference
they tested his IQ
came back 153
teachers are freaking out....they want to accelerate his education
me and his mom are like slow down
he already at the most advanced school we can afford
when I say we its me and mom and my wife and her mom chipping in to pay tuition
heads kind of spinning
I don't want my kid to be the Unabomber...at the same time I don't want to get in his way
lil nigga told me he wanted to "proceed with the best measures for his happiness"
he's 4

shit is weird

I wasn't 151 but I was high.

Back then they put you in "The Gifted and Talented Program" and I am 100% sure they slowed down our learning to reintegrate us into the normal classes.

Also, back then normal kids had much less homework than today - I can only imagine the extra work they'd give kids now in accelerated programs.

But - this is a good problem to have, just make sure the kid wants to go with the program - whatever program you choose.

Looking at the tuition online...that's not too far off what we were and still are paying for daycare for our youngest.
It would be a stretch...but based on kindergarten experience so far....It might be a move we need to seriously consider.
I need to build with you on this for real for real!

I was in a lot of the advanced classes in HS, and don't know where i fell in terms of IQ (if i had to guess, i'm way closer to normal than genius), but I was around a couple of really smart people. One thing I saw on more than one occasion was that the quite a few of the really smart kids got used to being told they were smart and started to get really shitty. One of the smartest dudes i know flunked out of college first semester because they actually required him to show up and do work.

It's great that your kid has tons of potential, do what you can to make sure he's happy and well rounded. Make sure he's not just around other smart people, but good people who aren't gassing him up about how smart he is.

In a generation of swine, the one-eyed pig is king.

And if possible, find a program that does that.

Stay the hell away from "accelerated" programs that just push him faster through the same old facts and figures and try to get him into college at 14. No good almost ever comes of that.

I was in a similar place around that age (I think I was 6 or 7 when they gave me the IQ tests). And I was lucky enough to be in a public school district (in Florida) with a 'gifted' program that focused almost entirely on creative outlets. They knew we wouldn't NEED to memorize our multiplication tables (I still haven't!) or drill us on spelling. We had long naps, wrote stories every day and shared them with each other, did surprisingly sophisticated science projects. I still remember those years very fondly, and I think more than any other school experience (maybe even grad school!), they made me who I am. I assume programs like this are few and far between nowadays, especially in public schools. But the main point is: let the little kid be an independent thinker. He can handle it.

Give him an underground lab to build death rays and abominations to nature and get that parent of a supervillain money.

Or just make sure to nurture him creatively and try to keep him challenged, I don't know, seems like you're doing pretty well.

That's hilarious. I don't know how worried you need to be, objectivism actually would make a lot of sense for a kid. People who aren't Paul Ryan usually grow out of that.

The academics is the easy part. The challenge is making sure he is a happy kid with a good heart.

I think I was in the 140s when my parents tested me as a kid. At least that's what they say but they are prone to hyperbole.

I did super well in highschool but it wasn't a great academic environment. It really didn't challenge me and I wasn't best prepared for college academically. However, I mostly black teachers and it was a nuturing environment so by the time I got to college I just knew I was the shit and that served me most for college and beyond.

Been killing it ever since *wink emoji*.

so when we do talk to him about what he wants...he tells us
he loves being challenged...but where we live the only place to do that is not diverse at all
but he has cousins and friends from the neighborhood that he plays with so I think that balances it out

This Malcolm Gladwell episode put it all in perspective for me.

http://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/13-miss-buchanans-period-of-adjustment

It perfectly aligns with my upbringing. Then I put my boys in private school. Their first two years of school they had black teachers (a black man even!). First white teacher they had started Identifying behavior and learning issues and started him down the path to putting him in special ed. We did some interventions (tutoring, etc.) and now for second grade he again has a teacher of color (asian). We had a PTC meeting last week didn't know what to expect. She did nothing but praised him.

Teachers of colors matter. We have to weigh that heavily in for his next move.

My nephew is smart as shit but when he had a white teacher he struggled big time. She did the whole behavior nonsense.

He had a Black male teacher the next year and was killing it again. He wanted to wear suits and ties to school and giving speeches in DC.
