Can't say I know the history but Ron G was the first person I heard taking hard ass hip-hop tracks and putting R&B vocals over them. I could most certainly be wrong.

I ocasssionally got my hands on a mixtape from my cousin who lived in NYC while we were in VA. A ROn G mixtape was like gold. We would play them joints until they broke.
I am sure they live somewhere online, I am scared they won't be as flames as I remember so I haven't bothered to track them down.

Interestingly enough it was exactly what puff would go on to do which was slow down the bpm in hip hop with those remixes and r&b samples. And lose those hard drums. The Ron G remix was dope but def more suited for the mixshow-lunch hour-rush hour radio times (if radio still has that format)
