"at what point in the altercation do you call the cops? Do you?"

Setting: Black urban neighborhood at night. Some people around, walking home or wherever. Regular amount of cars passing by at the intersection. This is a generally highly policed area anyway.

You walk up on a domestic issue that's taking place in the middle of the street. Young Black woman and young Black man.

They are fighting -- violently shoving, pulling, wrestling with each other in a car. Well, she is in the car. He is in and also out. Trying to pull her out...maybe. It's unclear. But they are tussling. She is saying "Get off of me" and "Get out of my car." She also reverses and accelerates the car forward a couple of times to get him to get away from her. But he holds on and just allows himself to be pulled backwards by the car door or pulled forward. He never falls under the wheels or anything. Once the car stops, he goes back in.

So. What do you do here?

I ain’t calling cops tho

Is she drunk? Is she trying to escape an abusive mate?

Not sure but I ai t calling cops unless it’s blood, lots of blood or gunshots.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

You're a bystander who has just come upon this situation. You don't know this woman or this man, their involvement or their condition.

Any fear that if you wait until it gets to that point it could be too late?

Not on my block I might just keep it moving.

On my block? Out in front of my house? I'm peeking out the window with the cops on the line. FOH... they could've had that dumb-ass argument in their apartment, not in front of my crib or on my block when I'm trying to chill.

The argument by itself isn't enough, but the violence (including using the car) is enough to make that call.

Got me a little wary. I will call on the sneak tip if it looks like it could get out of hand. God knows I've had my share of "tussles" with my own wife. We been married for 17 years, and I believe every couple has had their moments. Hell, I remember one time we were both drunk, arguing, and I was parked with the truck running, on the sidewalk facing the wrong way in front of a shopping center, and we wound up falling down a hill due to excessive grabbing, pulling, pushing. I can't believe we didn't get hauled into jail that night. LMAO.

but there's not enough info here for me to say.

Too many things you just don't KNOW, and police interactions w/ POC just turn out bad...bad...bad more often than not.

If it's yelling, grabbing and shoving, I'mma leave it alone.

But if dude was on her just beating her up, I'd try to intervene.

but sometimes these situations end up with someone not making it home or something crazy later on.

I might call the boys if I think shit is about to go left. In your situation if it's a chick talking about get off me, then yeah I'm probably calling the police. If that was my sister or my daughter I'd hope someone would do the same. You shouldn't be doing that shit in public risking getting locked up anyway.

If I'm in my old neighborhood then it's still KIM cause block rules.

That's a much clearer indication of WHEN to call the police.

Otherwise...'they just fighting' and 'you bein nosy'

there's really no telling what kind of mutually toxic compromise is at play in these scenarios.

sorry bad jokes.... it's a gut feeling thing really... if it comes down to the point where I actually have to ask myself I'll likely make the call.
