Name-checked some "good ideas" circulating at the moment, and that one in particular. That was a bright spot.

“i happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care program...i see no reason why the united states of america, the wealthiest country in the history of the world, spending 14 percent of its gross national product on health care cannot provide basic health insurance to everybody. and thats what jim is talking about when he says everybody in, nobody out. a single payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. and that’s what i’d like to see.” – barack obama in 2003
just like hillary (who was fighting for universal health care back in the 90s).
they just came to realize the realities of washington and what it takes to actually get policies across the finish line. hillary especially because of battering and bruising she took in the healthcare fight back then.
the public option (obamacare) was designed to gradually move people into a single payer system via voluntary opt-in, making it overwhelmingly easier in the future to institute single payer across the board once people saw how popular/beneficial it was (like medicare). but joe lieberman killed the public option for the specific reason that it would lead to universal healthcare lol.
