"What rapper have you done a complete 180 on?"

I remember the first post (or the first I can remember) talking about Young MA. I was with the jokes as much as everyone else over a couple of lines in the song that was posted. I will say with 100% realness that since then, I have come around on her. She's dope. She can definitely rap. I'm not saying she's Top 5 dead or alive or anything like that, but I dig her. I ended up going down a rabbit hole of YT videos and that led me to download her albums off Spotify and give them an honest listen. She has an ear for beats, man...and she's got prolly 8-10 songs that are absolute ass-kickers. I'm a fan.

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

In the 00’s, I didn’t rock with him at all other than “Breathe” and a few other verses here and there.

In the 10’s, he’s been one of my favorite rappers. All 3 Soul Tapes and Summertime Shootouts got heavy play from me.

College Dropout Kanye was transformative for me, I had him up there amongst my favorites; Mos, Andre, Black Thought...etc.

I find him unlistenable now.

Gillie Da Kid is supposed to be the Ghostwriter for the first two Carters

Or is this just all rumor?

And his output was so prolific that it would be silly to assume otherwise.

Curren$y also has some claim to ghostwriting some portions of Tha Carter 2, and I'd fully believe that Wayne heard those dudes working their own material out and strong-armed some ideas from them for his own projects.

But the Gillie situation is one of those "if you wrote that, why did your own music flop so hard?" arguments that makes it uninteresting to me. Funnily enough, if he hadn't tried so hard to have his own rap career I'd have an easier time believing it.

In response to Reply # 10

Wayne started in like 2012 when I realized that his stuff is mostly fun and harmless, and far preferable to some recent mainstream hip-hop developments. I think I would've come around on him anyway though. He's funny.

Chainz I came around on after hearing his verse on De La's "Whoodeeni". I was like wait this dude can actually rap huh. I still don't love his solo work (not a huge trap fan) but I still check for all his verses whenever I see him featured on a song, or see a new song from him ... just cause he's actually way better on the mic than I originally thought.

i think his de la feature might be what got me to give him a chance too. i was avoiding him based on just his name (kind of ironic). havent checked out his solo work but i sure love hearing "2 chainz" before he starts a guest verse lol.

Haha yes that always excites me now. For example he had a great verse on Statik Selektah's most recent album. And 2ish years ago right before De La's album I probably would've just skipped that song altogether or skimmed through it just because of his involvement.

I also have a high level of respect for him due to his previous life as Tity Boi. What a fucking fantastic rap name. Haha.

Titty Boi because of the name. Even if he one day changed it, he would still always be the guy who thought Titty Boi was a good rap name.

But I can't pretend like I don't turn up his verses any time he shows up.

Prolly more like a 360. I rocked his So Far Gone tape hard then lost interest with his albums.

I think it’s more of him as a person than his music tho. That Gods Plan video and hearing about him showing up at a sick girls bedside for her birthday this morning has made me a fan.

me too. I really disliked Drake, especially back when I’d see that damn “last name evah...” sprite commercial before every movie and NBA game.

IYRTITL really changed my mind.

And Scorpian been on repeat.

Him and 40 really have a unique sound together. I’m fascinated by all that bit-degrading, vocals on top mixing stuff. Never wouldn’t thought I’d be into Drake on all levels: music, personality, and even engineering like that.

Somehow, I gave Flower Boy a chance on Google Play lastyear and was blown away. Probably my favorite release of 2017. Dude is talented.

I'm not mad at his pre-Blue Slide Park stuff, nor that album, but it is very, very, very not for me. About two years after that though, after camping with TDE and Odd Future in California for long stretches, he now makes some pretty fun and sometimes interesting music.

Like 100 years from now it would be a classic?

Maybe dude wasn’t into rap?

How do you miss out on his albums that pretty much changed the sound of hip hop

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

102. "old music new ears. I listen to music differently now"
In response to Reply # 63

When the first three albums were dropping I was in a different place musically - if it was not DnB or grime or some early pre-dubstep stuff I was not open to it even though my musical roots have a wide base, even though I spent a lot of time listening to jazz, rock, beats, etc during that time. Kanye just wasnt in my lane in the early days.

when I listen to music now I hear the past, present and future - seriously, most of the listening to music becomes distracting because I'm always hearing some old sample or riff or lifted reference that gets me digging

I was also kinda snobby about stuff at the time, or rather, when something is BIG and Popular I can't get into it because I am always dissapointed and left saying "yo, is this it?" shit just gets hyped up for me so my expectations are always off so I've learned to just come around on my own with music stuff, I still havent watched Lemonade, heard an early Jay Z album from beginning to end, etc...

I finally got into Kanye around 2014, I had just gotten a new job in an industry I was trying hard as fuck to break into after grinding for years, I was about 2 weeks in and just thinking about the fact that dreams attained are not always satisfying so I was sitting just kinda like "the fuck we gonna do?" when I heard

Workin' this grave shift and I ain't made shit
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky, oh
I've been workin' this grave shift and I ain't made shit
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

I just leaned back and took that shit in for a second - I mean, its talking about working retail but I felt that shit.

I was really ambivalent about him before. I couldn't have picked him or his voice out of a lineup. Any verse I had heard from him had never moved me in the slightest.

So when I saw cats on here giving props to "AstroWorld," I got curious. I still don't think the cat can rap very well but that album is very, very listenable for me. No flows but he's got some talent.

It was easily dismissed cause it sounded like all the other trappy shxt.

I actually listened to the 'feel' of it, and it was refreshing to hear one of these young nxggas actually sing/talk about having a FEELING about someone.

The Kendrick co-sign also gave it some weight.

After that I started giving him more of a chance.

came around on.

I guess UGK in general (I know. I know)

Was young and heavy in my Lesson days back then. Rawkus then LB, Justus League. Super angsty and its cringe to go back and read some of my shit.

The turning point was first reading Menphyl and K orr's takes on Pimp and them.

The more I read, the more I understood. They were such important voices to the board back then, man. Not going against the grain for the sake of doing so, but offering a perspective that balanced and only made this place better. It made me seek out UGK, Three Six, Geto Boys etc

I miss the pre-social media internet. The niche forum communities everywhere. I don't post in the Lesson as often. But it will always have a very special meaning to me.

Then went through my backpacker phase and ignored him for a few years (like 99-01) and spoke ill of his being a "sellout" when his name came up.

Then "Blueprint" came out and I couldn't front anymore haha. He's wholly imperfect career-wise but he can rap his ass off, and when he's focused, look the fuck out.

I played him something...he liked it.

He put Young MA on, track called EAT

Asked me, yo, what do you think of this

I was a fan since then (2 years ago). Some of the Red Life shit is hit or miss but she has bars. And given the proper beat, she can black the fuck out

Add to that her freestyles and bang

Maybe because she mixes the boom-bap shit with some new shit. She don't have to be on the mumble shit, but can go in that lane if she has to. And for some reason she reminds me of Styles P

Nevertheless, she's got bars, and she's on that 90's ish. Still a fan (her logo is a remix of the NYK Knicks logo)

I was always down with Nik as far as choosing sides. Dug most of her music, respected her spit game, but her pettiness and blame hurling has totally switched me out. How a grown azz woman can be so petty has just turned me off. Cardi if nothing else has proven to be likeable, so that's where I'm at with it.

Eminem and 50 Cent even more than Kanye for me

Em I loved the first 3 albums and most everything thru 8 Mile. Encore was awful. I was kinda cool with Relapse but everything since has been terrible and I don't really even enjoy those early albums anymore either. Didn't bother even listening once to his last album.

50 I fell for the hype, ordered the G-Unit mixtapes, power of the dollar, bought GRODT day one. By time Massacre dropped I already moved on and could never go back. Haven't checked anything since.

Kanye is a little different, still check out his new albums even tho none have been worth going back to for me since MBDTF.

Especially if they're cleverly-edited.

I have a ton of them as 12" singles and I opt for the radio version these days when I feel like spinning a 90's hip-hop set.

I curse every day, but for some reason I've been detesting the lazy lyrics on some of my "golden era" favorites. Especially the use of "faggot" and "bitch," which sticks out to me a LOT more now that I'm older.
