"Optimists: show me how this ends well"
Tue Jun-19-18 12:19 PM by MEAT

My one request.
Sketch me a path on today (which is not good) being the worst this gets.

For level setting:
The president of the country you live in just described immigrants as an infestation, said the media is abetting that, had his administration withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council and it’s only Tuesday. He spent last week demonizing allies in global liberal democracy, enflaming a trade war, while cozying up to one of the worst dictatorships on the planet and using that as planning to meet with another Authoritarian world leader.

I see society as it is, and has always been: FLAWED.

I'm here tho, and I feel like I can make a change. I see the light in the eyes of children and feel positive for the future. I know as the seasons do, so does the world.

I see Black Americans --right now-- being in the best position we've ever been in America to make change.

I choose my own destiny, and I'm prepared to go to the grave for the right to do so. I'm not guaranteed success or failure, but at least I have a chance.

That's all I need.

If that doesn't work for you then cool, your perspective is your own.

Edit: Are you talking about politics? If so, then never mind. I have no opinion on that nonsensical world.

I respect your perspective, but it’s irrelevant.
Tangible actions will happen today, tomorrow, and the next. If the optimists’ position is that things will be better, what actions are better?

This REALLY feels like a situation that can not end well. And for all the folks that are trying to convince me of a alternative perspective, none are providing actual metrics or outcomes. It’s mainly just perseverance and hope.
Which is fine.
But I didn’t ensure that our passports were updated and that we could protect ourselves on home due to lack of perspective. Quite the opposite. I looked at the most likely outcomes for the ongoing situations and have tried to figure out the best ways to be “safe” and that position seems much less tenable than it did a month ago.

the optimist in me hopes this leads to the end of the 2 party system

i.e. folks can finally see that Dems have been complicit in this bullshit

my hope is to have viable 3rd and 4th party candidates

and we end the charade of a 2 party system

the least optimistic...LOL...outcome...is that the whitelash we saw with Trumpster...will result in a progressive backlash in the next election cycle

i.e. Trumpster moved infinity right...the country moves infinity left

I took them as placating and talking down, that treats an existential problem as a matter of hysterics and I told you to fuck off when you brought up this: BTW, engaging in these posts isn't going to help remedy the issue you raised in your post.

>if news stories like these are contributing to your struggles
Because these aren’t “news stories” these are global events just like weather patterns and seasons.

The post.
Some of you niggas can barely manage your home lives because you playing with hopes and dreams but want to give me world views.
And then condescend to me.
If I sound the least bit irrational it’s because I keep having to backspace on personal attacks in response to personal assumptions and try to recenter shit to what I’m asking about.
And it’s a little difficult when niggas with home problems try to talk about you having home problems. So I’m struggling a bit with decorum.

Like It seems wild easy for you to pathologize people and that picks at me. It bothers me that you feel comfortable to reference my kid and lack of sleep.
But not know that I’m on a personal eating, sleeping, exercise plan to address lack of sleep.
It bothers me that you feel comfortable referencing my valid questions as hysterics as if I’m crawled under a desk instead of vocalizing. Very human emotion.

It picks at me that you can have home problems and run up into posts of people with home problems. It bothers me that you can talk real greasy about the motivations of others and act like your driving motivations aren’t based on your wife’s career and the constant issues you bring up with that or the relationship with her folks or the money stress you have while trying to work a new job and can’t pay for child care.

It picks at me than you try to post so condescendingly to others and don’t opebly address the full human spectrum of yourself.

"How would that work, and on what timeframe?
2020? 5 years? 10 years? Nationally? What about smaller places with less diversity."

I think this is what was lost with Bern's campaign...that he joined the dems instead of running strictly as an independent

That could have been THE breakthrough...but I hope it is just setting the stage for more viable political parties

i.e it's already happening

https://www.npr.org/2016/02/28/467961962/sick-of-political-parties-unaffiliated-voters-are-changing-politics

"I took them as placating and talking down, that treats an existential problem as a matter of hysterics and I told you to fuck off when you brought up my kid/family."

I don't remember mentioning your kids or family, I don't know you well enough to enter that conversation...maybe you could point it out for me...?

"Because these aren’t “news stories” these are global events just like weather patterns and seasons."

"What is my psychological state? This is why I told you to fuck off yesterday."

When I see a post titled...I'm struggling...in this forum...I feel compelled to reply

what I relayed to you directly in your post was how I personally dealt with the same thing

I was where you are today...at the beginning of the election cycle

I didn't want to even be associated with a country that would even entertain a leader like Trumpster

+ I really REALLY love Vancouver

That is how I am interpreting your psychological state...it's a bit of panic IMO

at least that is how I felt when I was having some of the same thoughts and reactions

during that election cycle...I actually stopped watching TV all together

it really did help, ALOT

that is the extent of my intent...trying to give you some advice based on my reaction and dealings with the same issue.

To answer the question you pose today in your OP...we survive.

That's how this ends well...we will continue our lives post Trumpster

Ramifications. It’s not hyperbole to state that. It’s not panicky
I worry about how much you all continue to type out solutions or comcerrns based on who’s at the helm.
I can’t tel if it’s that a lot of you haven’t accepted the events of today or reject what is to be.
THIS post was to bring all of these situations into a very tangible question. And very few of you seem to be able to even grapple with the question. Only how it effects you.

I don't remember mentioning your kids or family, I don't know you well enough to enter that conversation...maybe you could point it out for me...?

and not to sound insensitive but it sounds like depression.

men can go through postpartum and this may be what he is dealing with since he has a young one and isn't getting enough sleep.

That sleep dep is real with a new baby.

but to keep disregarding people advice or ideas with more negativity definitely feels like it could be something he needs to talk to a professional about.

edit: uh oh... guess I will have to fuck off as well.

I'm not going to edit it out tho, Black Fathers yo! We have to fight through this for the youngins!!!

More likely a heart attack, of course.

Who would have thought I would end up HOPING for a Mike Pence Presidency!

In the more medium-term, I'm starting to think these crying kids might finally galvanize the opposition to vote him out in 2020. But at the rate these things move that sounds like a hell of a long way off.

In response to Reply # 0

Because we get to choose a new president in two years.
The US government moves very slow, so I'm optimistic that there is very little Pres Trump can do that will be permanent in that time frame.
I'm not super optimistic that he won't be re-elected though.

The US (and the world) is more than Trump. And there are plenty of things going on to be optimistic about.

I, in a way, do truly appreciate the attempts to change my perspective.
Those attempts don’t understand my perspective though. I’m a grade A cynic. Nothing is too bad nothing is too great ... that’s me.
And conveying that brought people to attempt to cheer me up. But my very specific question was a pushback against internalizing the current events.
And if folks are trying to say it’ll get better, my ask is what does that path look like.

Who stops the round ups
Who reunites the families
How quick are laws put into place to check this
What systems of “enforcement” are dismantled, when
How long do the court fights last
What circuits do they go through.

These are my questions.

first and foremost though.. people... people are the ones who will have to do these things. some of them may have jobs related directly to whats going on and some of them are just people who involve themselves.. how it happens, how long it will take, how much worse before it gets better and what the results will be remains to be seen but you're doing it/going through it right now... I don't know that it will get better but I do believe it can.

You might be looking for a more rational answer, but when Dennis Rodman "Ray-J'd" the whole N. Korea summit ('I hit it FIRST'), while Kim K. became the champion of prison reform you gotta remove logic from the equation.

I'm more worried about a natural disaster. Them volcanoes in Hawaii have been dormant all my life. Now real pop-rocks are blowing people's legs off. Weird floods happening in weird places.

It gets worse for a while before it gets better.

Mueller report, last I checked, was alleged to finish in 90 days. Once that report is out all hell breaks loose as Republicans defend Trump as they fight for their political future.

After they get done hurting the immigrants do they come for me? Conservative logic preaches all black people are monster thug hooligan criminal sexual deviant beasts evil scum of the earth. What happens when they focus their energy on me? Who can I turn to? Who has my back?

At best Republicans lose most of the house enough to derail Trump's agenda. The Mueller report's findings piss off enough people to have Trump voted out of office. The American people get a refund on all the money we've spent protecting Trump and his family as they vacation while conducting business deals. All of Trump's cabinet are forced out of office and the new government reverses every policy decision made since January 20, 2017.

... local control as well. You see how they packed the courts with unqualified extreme conservatives in order to push their agenda through. Those appointments last a long time and have far reaching consequences towards the America's landscape.

If America is still around things should change by 2090. Ethnic childbirths surpass white childbirths by 2047 and reach the age to change things overall. They'll be close to baby boomers at that point with grandchildren that continue their line. They become members of the electorate with memories of growing up in a dystopian dysfunctional America that hates them.

I’d say Egypt is the least apt comparison due to military take over that facilitated change, Russia being in the middle due to rampant corruption and boyishness interests that took over government entities and pseudo elections, and Turkey being the most apt in which a strong religious backing hijacked a secular democracy, jailed journalists, then changed the rules of the governing bodies to consolidate power all while demonizing and prosecuting opponents.

But I’m willing to hear your studied counterpoints.

A lot of Trump’s friends will go to jail. We need to do a house cleaning and vote all of these shitty people out of office. It won’t be overnight but progress will be made. Trump is going down, it’s just a matter of time. He’s attacking our the press, the FBI, and the truth but all of those things will be here after he’s gone. Things are really fucked up right now but they will get better.

I need a lot of you to come to grips with the very real very possible possibility that the changes we’re expereinceing, based on history, and the most likely outcomes of what happens when these things happen; that these changes you won’t live to see them resolve. Either through cataclysmic action or just the time it’ll take to “right” things.

Which I don't think happens. Because even IF we're able to hold off the worst impulses of the fascists for a few more years and start to slowly turn back the most horrible things they've done in the 2020's, we're still going to have one of two political parties that will blow up everything in the name of white supremacy, and at SOME point they'll be back in power.

That there were no real consequences for anyone in the Bush administration tells me that it's going to be the same for Trumpers.

We need to be thinking about post-war West Germany and post-Apartheid South Africa as a model.

Numbered.
This country as a whole hasn’t reconcilied with the genocidal take over of land let alone slavery and demographically and geographically don’t “need” to.

But I think the bigger stumbling block will be your second point. The urge to just put it behind us is so powerful, and we've never really resisted it before. Not with Native people, not with Japanese-American internment, certainly not with anything related to slavery/Jim Crow/systemic racism as a whole.

If Trump actually does get impeached, count how many people think the idea of President Pence would "at least get us back to normal." I don't want to "get back to normal," normal got us here to begin with and won't stop it the next time. But that's my great fear, that we try and sweep everything under the rug and just "move forward."
