I have a feeling this may be the album that I didn't know I needed. I was never really excited about the collab though I knew it was happening eventually. And now that it's out I'm ki da excited

We expect artists to talk about their lives in their music but this is on a different level of artistry. It's natural, not corny and derivative. They are both present and stand out separately and as one on the whole thing. This is doing some thing that most marketed duets and collaborative albums could never do. This joint feels very significant in the history of hiphop/RnB to me.
I'm only one listen through so I'm not even speaking on whatever is supposed to make the album good or bad

Jay: You went to Jared I went to JAR out out in Pari
B: Yea you fucked up the first stone we had to remarried

I should put that in a song

On first listen I wasn't really feeling Apeshit. But the album, as a full listen all the way through... I think I like it better than Lemonade and 4:44.

Lemonade and 4:44 are both cool, but more like I just have my favourites and I loved the visuals and artistry. I rarely listen to either all the way through.

THIS joint though, it's just fun! And it's refreshing to hear them double down on mainstream for a bit. I love the production.. omg, boom bap? Lol.

This'll be in my workout rotation for a while.

Edit: Now if only they could make it easier for me to give them my money *eyeroll* I hate this "weaponized scarcity" tactic in Tidal's business model, like what are they doing???? I could see limiting the STREAMING to Tidal, but why are you preventing people from PURCHASING your albums on other platforms when they drop? I feel like they make the bootleg situation worse this way. People that don't really stream like that are not a good target for subscriptions anyway. LET us give you album sales.

This takes me back to when I was younger and black business started opening up in our hoods. We gave the reason for not supporting because the prices were too high.

so my question, how do we create exclusivity? it’s the part I honestly don’t understand

I wanna believe when they say it’s not about the streams; yet, getting to a place that is totally ours...

They are basically giving a middle finger to the white American business model.

I’m not mad at it but it’s going to take a while to get us to give up Walmart and Whole Foods to shop at Fubu.

I’m on Spotify. It works, they have a shit load of music and I’ve been on it for years. Does Tidal have all the songs I have on Spotify? Prolly not... but what if they do?

I really have no excuse to not try them out and see if they have what I want/need.

My wife and I use the same Spotify account and she uses it for work since she teaches dance. If we can do the same thing with Tidal, I will switch.

Back in the day OutKast did a show in DC hoasted by the radio station. My boy asked them how much they were paid. They told him they did the show for free because the station threatened them. “Do the show or we won’t play your music on the radio”

Most artist cave in that situation.

It’s dope line and it shows he knew his worth and radio played his shit because they needed him more than he needed them.

It's like they want to allow people only one way to support. Which is irritating to those of us interested in a specific product but not the service. I'm not going to suddenly become enamored with streaming services just because they (try to) force me to subscribe. So people who don't really stream shouldn't buy their new projects??

I do get how and why subscriptions would be their main profit driver.. Streams are nice for certifications and whatnot, but high utilization/stream volume must actually cost them a lot of money if we factor in the demand on their backend infrastructure.

I just think Beyonce and Jay Z's tactic to strongarm people is heavy-handed and that's the turnoff for me. Deal with album sales and streams/subscriptions differently.

unless you subscribe to their streaming ecosystem.

I'm not much of a streamer and don't believe in handing over contact/credit card info for stuff I know I won't use. An X months of free streaming promo doesn't incentivize customers like me.

What other support is there? Just plain old album sales!

I would have gladly contributed to their black empire by purchasing this album from another sales channel. It was the first thing I tried to do. Is their really that huge a difference between an album purchased off itunes, amazon, etc vs Tidal??

Just seems like some poor market segmentation *shrug*

Since I liked the album so much, here's how I'm paying them for it...
I signed up for Tidal, and I'll let at least two months go by so I get billed for it, since one month is free. I'm playing the album on Tidal too.

Not sure you wanna do all that, but that's one way to go about it if you really wanna put money in their pockets.

I'm kinda in the streaming mood since I got back on Spotify free about a week ago.
If I find I'm not using Tidal, I'll cancel after a couple of months.
Not trying to just be throwing away money.

Apple and Amazon keep a portion of the sale of each song/album

even if its the same at Tidal.. they own it so... it's all profit for them.

Exclusivity really is a losing strategy....

Most people are either gonna sign up for 1 month then leave or just download it illegally...

I know it makes sense for him but it really is playing old music industry games in a totally new landscape

Why are they “insufferable”??

Like, okay, you dont like their music. Fine.

You dont like their videos? Thats a little weird
because ther are each on a nice video run. But
ok.

You dont like their “artistic” videos? Are they
not artists?

Okay, so you dont like any of it.

But, even at that, why do they make you so
mad?

Is it their success? That they are getting more
comfortable celebrating their blackness?

Is it both?

Because you are in here, and in the Lesson,
posting like you watch Fox News.

If you dont like their art, fine- but theres really
no reason go hate them at this point.

Might want to do some soul searching on
why they make you this upset.

Is that your track record?

Dog, youre in here with like 7 posts telling
everyone they are idiots and calling the Carters
insufferable.

You dont like their art, thats fine.

But you are doing extra. Very Fox News-ish
stuff is coning from you.

I honestly dont think you mean it that way, but
you really should consider pumping the breaks.

Theres really no reason to hate on them at this point.

You do have a track record of forgetting this
is all subjective too. Like, no one is an idiot
for liking a video.

In fact, like i said, each of them have made
incredible videos lately. I think we should
applaud the effort they put into them.

But, even if its not for you, they arent insufferable
and we arent idiots for having a different opinion
than you.

I for one am glad they are taking attention
away from MAGA and the wife beater.

Do you hear Cam rapping like insert young trash rapper? FUCK NO

Fuck every last one of these trash ass songs and let me get to Beyonce.......

WHY IN THE FUCK IS SHE DOING A RHIANNA IMPRESSION? Mafucker YOU BEYONCE. Miss me with all this fake shit as you married. Go back to doing what got you to this position: BE YOURSELF

As for the Drake diss we have to break this down properly:

Hov is 48 right now, in 2008 he was 38 which means he was 31 in 2001 the same age as Drake.
His biggest endorsement was Rocawear and maybe Carol's Daughter if you add 2002. Hov was not worth $250 million in 2001 coincidentally the same age as Drake. This shot comes out of nowhere and is unjustified to say the least. I won't cyse Drake's future but Hov is out of line bullying for no reason. Imagine if the older more successful artist bullied Hov at the same point in time...

I haven't heard the whole album but ApeSh*t is standard Jay-Z bars, better than any of his rhyming on 4:44 AND much better than alot of what Nas did on Nasir (which for the first time had Nas sounding like he has lost some ability).

They aren't the only Black couple who's ever done it and they aren't the only one doing it now, but it's still nice to see from a more well-known duo. Especially at a time when media seems very anti Black couple depictions. Plus at one point, I was tired of all of Beyonce's more prominent songs being about relationship conflict and breakups, so this kind of atones for that in my mind. I think often how we rarely hear music with the message of "Let's Stay Together" at the forefront anymore in Black music. Like even if it's fantasy, if Rick Ross and them can fantasize about being kingpins, can we not fantasize about lasting relationships? lol

"Oh I miss the songs the radio don't play. Nobody talks about love, everybody's too busy gettin paid" - Lina "Smooth" 2005

Aside from that tho, I dig the stuff Jay said in Apeshit about the Superbowl and the Grammys. I like how some of the album has a sorta typical mainstream sound but still sounds different from most other mainstream (Nice, for instance... but Pharrell is involved there, and he don't paint by numbers) mainly because Jay refuses to just be a clone of newer rappers even if he's on a "contemporary beat" (which I appreciate about Jay), but then a lot of it doesn't sound like current mainstream at all... even some boom bap there (713, Black Effect, etc). Overall the album just sounds good to me. It's so rare these days that I can play an album front to back.

>Do you know if she's still making music?

I went looking and found out her last release was in 2015... an EP called "Love Ride" and this thing is great. I'm copping. It's also on Spotify and Tidal and is actually her 4th release since 2005, so I'm gonna check out the rest of that and see what it's hittin on. But man, this "Love Ride" EP yet another reason ppl gotta stop saying Black people stopped making R&B and singing. The title track, "Dip" and "Go Where The Love Is" are just straight up great music imo. Damn I'm glad you asked that. I'm just sad this awesome music came out and got no widespread promotion/love.
*edit* just read that "Dip" was a top 50 most played Soul song in the UK for 2014 at least.

This place is bizarro world, lol. World’s biggest pop star drops basically a rap album without losing the dance/r&b flair that made her what ahe is, along with her rapper hubby solidly playing solid backup man and rapping at solid level (hopefully with 4:44 and this the rap skills slide has stopped).

Drake’s the only one who can outdo this release as far quality/reach and impact is concerned, and that “Im Upset” proves that’s not gonna happen.

Imho pulls off what GOOD was trying to do this season but in a more complete package. Maybe cramming beats/bars to the last minute and relying on swag to push a project over finishlines aint the move

imo Both are needed

We need to fuck up the idea of the "release".. EP, Album, Mixtape, Time Ye is testing those limits... he always will..

Bey & Ye never undercook.. they are testaments to quality and high level execution.. we NEED that too..

What a time

being a rapper now, the material sits with me much better. Assuming she's writing the rhymes herself, she's actually clever and often quite funny (in general, not just here). She's much more engaging in the content of her music than she ever comes off in interviews.

I've been down on her output in the last few years because I keep expecting her to sing straight ahead R&B, like all the divas before her. But she seems to have decided (years ago) that she's not going to do that. This rap-sing thing is going to be her "mark" on R&B (among the huge divas, obviously Nelly/Ja/50 innovated rap-singing 15 - 20 years ago).

Sidenote - And the interesting this is, Lauryn was rapping and singing at an extremely high level, but she never melded them, she would just go back and forth between the two. As did Missy and Latifah.

Her voice is solid but she’s no Whitney, hell she ain’t even an Aguilera.

While its infuriating to see the hybridization of hip-hop & R&B come at the detriment of R&B in 2018

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/how-hip-hop-edged-grittier-rb-singers-out-of-the-mainstream-w504678

There’s definitely a space for playful female rappers. While I had my hate and misgivings for…lol well most of her career, I have kinda come into loving her little black female empowerment thing even if its superficial level (cause let’s be honest that wasn’t a market that anybody cared for). Black Girl joy is missing in hip-hop AND r&b and so I feel like as long as she executes that part she’s done her job. This nails it to a tee and its a great summer album

Plus, Like you said, this feels more honest in comparison to when she was going for ‘classic’ R&B albums earlier in her solo career. Her run from the self-titled to now just seems more honest even if its bragging about how much she loves her dude, she’s a boss, and she buys expensive stuff.

I find that a little patronizing. How do you know it isn't real? if you don't know, why the assumption?

I remember her being very impacted by the Obamas and talking about how they made her want to be smarter...she didn't really get to focus on education as she was a singer from a really young age...i believe she has grown into knowledge and awareness about the world, feminism, blackness and social justice in a genuine way, and reflects that, continuously in her music and live shows. She seems to be very thoughtful and intentional about this expression AND the realization that she has the reach and power to put it in the mainstream where folks will see it

Shat on the superbowl and probably sacrifice any hopes on ever performing on the biggest platform an entertainer can perform on.

That's a big deal and a bigger stand taken than any other rap artist has taken on the NFL (especially considering few rap artist would ever even have the opportunity to perform at the superbowl).

That's dope AF.

to me.

I try to defend Jay-Z and Beyonce to the haters because I really do get the talent in them. Beyonce as a visual artist is astounding and she's beautiful to watch. In my 90s hip hop obsession, Jay-Z wasn't my thing but I get the respect he has and his intelligence.

However, it doesn't change the fact that when I'm at home and want to chill, contemplate life, feel good vibes, reflect or have a good cry, their music is NEVER what i put on. In fact, I don't think I've ever put any of their music on just to lounge around to. And I LOVE hip-hop & R&b

So, while I give them props for being the unbelievable force that they are, I don't buy it as great. The music is not great. Great is very very far from that.

Tidal has always worked really well for me.

The quality of the music is way better.

I actually like the podcast and video content.

The Playlist they curate are from actual DJ's.

Concert videos are cool.

And they have all types of discounts for students, Military, Family Etc.

I have never had any issues with tech problems or payments. while spotify puts this stupid shuffle button on my front page and even though I had a paid membership it wont go away.

Im trying to figure out why there is so much hate for it when people will put of with all types of garbage from spotify and even google music?????!!!!

is it really because its owned by a black man or that black man happens to be Jay Z????

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

i dont even know many people that use apple music and thats with most people i know having iPhones. spotify "won".

*long before tidal was a thing, people had their spotify accounts. they got their libraries setup. they got their playlists right. all of their friends are also on it. people not trying to start over.

i aint giving that up just to stream Hov's discography on his own service. i can live without it. and nothing else tidal has can sway me to switch when it doesnt do anything different that is significant.

I even did a 6 month trial with Tidal and extended it a couple months after that. It's not like I didn't give them a shot. They just don't offer anything that's better than what I'm getting with Spotify.

Some Jay Z & Beyonce exclusives aren't enough for me to switch either.

You know what? I hated "Bodak Yellow." When that song hit, I thought it was terrible. Still do.

But when the full album dropped, I checked it out and I had to give her credit. She's more talented than I gave her credit for based off that 1st song.

I don't understand how that goes along with the whole Spotify vs. Tidal thing though.

Tidal is still new. The change you want can't happen if no one supports it.

going back to my example about the storein the hood. He eventually sold it to the arabs because of the lack of support. At some point you get tired of investing I shit you know folks want but won't buy.

I understand. I'm just bothered by the hypocrisy of it all.

so far what I'm hearing is tidal is NOT better than spotify or apple music, it's simply on par. if they are trying to gobble up market share then they have to offer something big besides exclusives...music is sadly and honestly cheap these days. People will just bypass distribution channels if it's even just slightly hard to access content...I mean, this is a big reason why content providers have started to finally offer serves a la carte (ex. HBO, Showtime, etc). The whole cord cutter movement started because the majors we're not willing to play ball and it was just easier to grab content via alternate channels and methods.

why wait for a tidal exlusive when I can just get a link (i.e. 4:44, pablo, etc)?

why wait for a tidal exclusive when its really a pain in the dick to get to the content?

if they want people to get aboard the tidal train then they need to give us a big reason to jump ship - the fact that it's owned by Jay Z is a additional benefit, it's not a product feature.

edit: did some quick research and I see the big difference is higher sound quality but that comes at double the price even though they offer a 10 dollar version which is....good but not great. I have experience making music and I appreciate a good signal through flat response monitors and even with knowledge of a good sound system I'm perfectly fine with Spotify quality.

even if the content is just as good or the same folks will still resist if it cost $3 more per month.

I'm not a student or military.. maybe my wife can get an educator discount.

For me tho, it's about the house/emo/alternative options.. I listen to more other shit than main stream hip hop. If they have the same catalog as Spotify I may move.

Even before I was paying $10 for it, I was able to upload my entire library of downloaded music and can stream it from anywhere. Now that I pay for it as my means for streaming I still have access to my uploaded library and it comes with YouTube Red which means I haven't watched an ad on YouTube years.

Plus, the reason I looked into it in the first place, I like being on one platform for most of my digital footprint. When I get a new phone I log into my Google account and immediately have access to everything. Music being one of those things is huge.

Honestly.

I pretty much gave up downloading music 8 years ago.

If there is no internet connection I have no music outside of the few records I have in my collection.

But as a hip hop fan I have so many mixtapes and unreleased material that is not available to stream that it's a huge plus to be able to upload the library I previously built.

At least to me and everything I listen to Tidal, Spotify, and Google Play have 95% of the same music available, but Play wins with the uploading feature and Youtube Red no-ads cherry on top.

Don't think I'll stick around though - I can connect to spotify on my receiver, TV, xbox, playstation and alexa easier than Tidal. I can only connect via bluetooth to my receiver with Tidal.

I like to be able to play games and control the music from my console with one click.

Sound quality is better, if they fix other little things like the UI (if you are scrolling through a list and select something it scrolls back to the top not where you were) I might stick around.

i'm locked all the way into spotify

they have a good amount of the obscure electronic music releases (actually really on time too) I'm always checking for

they have a really solid user experience and ecosystem

its the little things that keeps me going

like, I have a work laptop, a home laptop and a phone

i could have something playing on my laptop at work, pick up my phone open spotify and the stream will start playing on the phone in an unbroken manner

then, when I get home i can open spotify and start playing the same music in an unbroken manner all while being able to skip and select songs from my phone as a remote

I'm not sure if Tidal could do this but I really like this

plus spotify is now intergrated into waze so you can skip through songs without having to leave waze

I cant see it remaining inferior if folks came over...

I keep going back to my example. The store was right across the street from me. I watch that man work hard on building up that store. No deliveries, he carried his own boxes in, he built the shelves, kept it cleaned, opened up on time. I used to sit on my porch and watch him. It was our first penny candy store...lol

Once in a while, the arabs would hand out free shit to us but things were different.

just migrating the blacks over aren't going to make it a superior product

it's a race...starting out 3rd and 4th leaves you at a huge disadvantage

exclusive music that i'm not even likely to stream on apple music when it drops there isn't enough

especially with spotify free being free

they'd need something bigger to close the distance

from the interviews I've watched of both. They appear to have a genuine love for one another. like, they won't come right out and diss each other.

Kanye made a good point in that interview with Char, when asked about the wedding. Ye said, if we're brothers...but if its business. I thought that was a solid point.

in their music.

They may be just great marketers but their is something that seems genuine in how they talk about each other.

Kanye seems to regard Kim as a trophy of sort.

Or take it even further and look how they regard their children. Kanye seems to treat the kids like trophy as well.

Jay on the otherhand references Blue like all the corny dads on FB just happy to have a kid.

It seems like having a kid changed how Jay raps meanwhile Kanye seems to be regressing.

This post isnt inpsired so much by a love for Jay-Z but rather a hate for Kanye.

and so his relationship with kim is very surface

but at the exact same time jay is getting more in touch with himself and his relationship with his wife is getting better and more productive for both of them.

SMH at Hov then again this is the new normal after all Quentin Miller has been around Pusha for two years.........

Hov shouldn't take reference tracks in 2018. Give me the nostalgia feel and do it yourself.

I hate all of this imitating new rappers flow stuff he's doing. I hate all of it.... Spit like it's the Black Album the latest. Just like Jordan fans don't acknowledge his time in Washington I'm not acknowledging anything past Black Album. American Gangster was throwaways from Vol 3 in my mind. WTT doesn't count because Hov was Hov on a practice court showing Kanye the fadeaway. Nothing else happened and this current album doesn't exist in my mind.

Yup all this is a fantasy there's no way Hov released an album spitting like current artists and Beyonce impersonated Rhianna for an entire album.

You don't see any black art here in this image?

http://thefader-res.cloudinary.com/private_images/w_960,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:best/f0c10d61-c18a-4c68-8965-d77f2a144094_e61a49/beyonce-jay-z-apeshit-art-history-expert-louvre-mona-lisa.jpg

or this:

Or the references to Touki Bouki like someone else has already mentioned?

I mean you wanted them to just put up black paintings in the Lourve, they could have done that I guess. Just seems a bit boring and telegraphed.

I get the criticism that this bolsters the dominant culture rather than challenging its power, but I think a little more is going on here then just "I'm Rich Bitch!"

I see beautiful Black women performing art. I refuse to objectify my people just as my oppressors have done for centuries...
Simple folk see that shit & try to put some deep meaning on it. Thinking folk see that shit & call it for the bullshit it is and try to get to the bottom of the "message" only to discover that there is in fact...NO message at all. I don't see any need for them to be doing it in front of the painting at all. If there was a statement to be made, it was a completely missed opportunity. Even the art historian in the article you linked doesn't see a connection.

Who? And why should I or any other Black artists trying to be seen and discovered feel that these "References" have helped their struggle in any shape form or fashion?

>I mean you wanted them to just put up black paintings in the
>Lourve, they could have done that I guess. Just seems a bit

I didn't really want anything honestly. But all the hoopla and praise deserves honest dissection and discussion. People see pretty Black folks with pretty art backdrops in a pretty place and get blinded by the pretty. Below the surface I see a lot of ugly and more of the same thing that's not doing much of anything worthy of the praise being heaped upon it.

>I get the criticism that this bolsters the dominant culture
>rather than challenging its power, but I think a little more

Is there?? Really? I'm just not seeing it. I'm open to seeing it, but I haven't been convinced.

Not looking for the bad.
It's a visually appealing video indeed.
But it's also deeply disturbing for the reason I stated in my original reply.
European worship levels on 100.
With that in mind...I can't clap to it. I'm kinda sick of it.
Whenever WE "make it"...we gotta floss off some White/ Eurocentric shit...
Essentially using THAT as the marker for success.
It's a problem.

"What I found most problematic about this video was 1) how the art was treated as decorative luxury and 2) how it was treated as something that only the very wealthy have access to. This may, in fact, be consistent with the history of art and where art had been seen and by whom before museums, but museums like the Louvre, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc. are fundamentally democratic institutions. They are palaces of learning and aesthetic delectation for everyone, and I object to the way the art was debased through appearing exclusive as an exclusive commodity in this video."

I LOVE Black Love.
