Hes been a staple in our house the last decade. My 9 yr old son froze in his tracks when he heard the report on NPR and was like "Anthony Bourdain's dead?"

Parts Unknown is one of those shows that when the fam is all together for a holiday and you're all just bored sitting on the couch, you could just turn to the marathon on CNN and satisfy almost everyone

This one hurts so much. My wife is a chef and we just prayed to the alter of AB, his stories and adventures gave us life. He's truly been staple in our household and his show gave us the boldness to try new foods and ideas when cooking.

RIP to a great man that was just more than a food critic but a commentator on the culture of the world.

When extraordinarily talented people who are so generous with their skills and knowledge and enthusiasm end their own lives...

Man.

It's so heartbreaking to imagine how unhappy they must have been, all the while providing others so much happiness and inspiration.

The way this guy used journalism/participatory research to marry cuisine and culture.. I learned more about Palestinians in the episode they went to Gaza/WB/Israel than in ANY investigative news report I've ever read. I just loved his stuff.

RIP AB..

Had to excuse myself. 'Parts Unknown' has been the roadmap for my culinary travels for years. The idea that he was shooting the show when he ended his life....

... the idea that Eric Ripert was the one who found him...

All way too much. Absolutely heartbreaking.

That he hated the fact that in America we always feel that Ethnic Foods should be of high quality and cheap at the same time. He said it was another facet of racism in america

I had mad respect for him for saying that. Also that he hated Pumpkin Spice everything!!!!

I think I see a bit of my self in him and really identified with him. So the fact that it was suicide has me really fucked up. Like you can really just be yourself and be extremely successful for it, but life is still life and you still struggle. Goddamn.

He was a guy who didn't compromise who he was or what he thought was right and not only did he not apologize for it, he flipped you off. He inspired me and so many others to see the real in cultures, food, and people that were both foreign and in our own backyards. RIP.

Anthony Bourdain’s Most Memorable Quotes
The late and great had a way with words

==================

Anthony Bourdain, the host of culinary travelogue Parts Unknown and one of the food world’s biggest voices, has died. He was a father, filmmaker, television host, chef, speaker, educator, and author. To most of the people that knew him or knew of him, Bourdain was simply strikingly, delightfully good with words. Though his focus was within the world of food, he could speak eloquently and powerfully on nearly any topic, from Armenian genocide to working in restaurants to American politics to omelets.

Here, now, some of his most memorable quotes and quips, from his many television shows, speaking engagements, interviews, and books.

On his surprising success as a TV star: “I assumed from the get-go that every minute I was on television was a freakish anomaly that would be over quickly. It came as a sobering and confusing moment when I realized I was still on the air. What the fuck is going on?”

On traveling, on culture, and on moving: “If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.”

On dining with Obama: “I’ve never seen someone enjoy a cold beer on a little plastic stool more than President Obama.”

On eggs: “An egg in anything makes it better.”

On his life philosophy: “Life is complicated. It’s filled with nuance. It’s unsatisfying... If I believe in anything, it is doubt. The root cause of all life’s problems is looking for a simple fucking answer.”

On why he quit smoking: “I mean, I’ve had more time on this Earth than I probably deserve, and I enjoy cigarettes very much, but now I feel that I owe this child who loves me to at least try to live a little longer, you know?”

On his work: “I have the best job in the world. If I’m unhappy, it’s a failure of imagination.”

On learning to cook: “Basic cooking skills are a virtue... the ability to feed yourself and a few others with proficiency should be taught to every young man and woman as a fundamental skill. as vital to growing up as learning to wipe one’s own ass, cross the street by oneself, or be trusted with money.”

On humanity: “I’m not that optimistic the human race...

“Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.”

One-time personal motto: “Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”

On filming in West Virginia: “You know, I went right at those things — guns, God, and Trump — and I was very moved by what I found there. I hope that people who watch the show will feel the same kind of empathy and respect, and will be able to walk in somebody else’s shoes, or imagine walking in somebody else’s shoes, for a few minutes in the same way that hopefully they do with one of my other shows.”

On the #MeToo movement: “Look, obviously, it’s personal for me. I mean, if I didn’t have a personal involvement with Asia Argento, I can’t tell you that I would have suddenly woken up. It was very intensely brought home to me in a very personal way. I found myself next to someone who was going through an incredibly difficult and traumatic time and telling her story, and I saw what was involved in making that decision and the aftermath. And then because of her situation, a community of women formed around her who were also telling their stories, often in my presence. It became a personal thing, and I can’t claim that I had a burning bush moment on the road to Damascus, where the scales fell away from my eyes. It was personal.”

On America: “I think it’s worth acknowledging that this is a country founded in violence, a country that has always worshipped outlaws, loners, cowboys, and people who got the things they got by the gun.”

On having an agenda: “I don’t have an agenda, but I do have a point of view, and it might change from minute to minute.”

On putting up with Trump: “I’m sticking it out, I’m not gonna run away to Canada. I’m gonna pay my fuckin’ taxes, I’m gonna vote, I’m gonna do all of that. But I’m not going to be taking it to the streets any time soon — well, we’ll see.”

On success: “Without new ideas success can become stale.”

On character: “Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don’t have.”

On wisdom: “Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom... is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.”

On life: “As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.”

If you or anyone you know is considering suicide or self-harm or is anxious, depressed, upset, or needs to talk, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or text the Crisis Text Line at 741-741. For international resources, here is a good place to begin.

Bad.

He's the one that inspired me to travel. Been a fan since A Cooks Tour and after years of watching and reading started to make traveling a priority about 5 years ago, both domestic and international. Often I used his show as a guide. In that time I've been to about 25 different countries.

He is definitely missed. Thank goodness I have been kept recordings of all the eps of NR and PU.

To be honest, I'm a fan of Bourdain as an interview but I never seriously watched his shows. I know him best as a Top Chef guest host and a good quote. Personally, anyway. I quit reading books - what a silly sentence that is - around the time I would've got the most out of his work.

So, truthfully, I know Bourdain best as some of my best friends, all the people in this hilariously stupid industry known as hospitality that continues to employ people who mask their contempt for wide swaths of humanity behind pork loins, Manhattans, lemon tarts and a swift "safety meeting" in back by the disheveled cuts of bread and unfinished, served dishes set aside by purely animalistic impulse for staff consumption.

I know him through the long conversations at other bars once my own's been closed, through the carnivorous and joyous way we sit in clouds of cigarette smoke out back and pillory rival restaurants we all agree we love but fuck 'em anyway 'cause they ain't us. I know him through the nights we ignore our significant others just to continue cathartically reliving faux-traumatic events under the light of the moon over elements of stress relief that promise to kill us just as meticulously.

I know him through the customers that understand, just a bit better, what it means to order a New York Sour as the tickets keep on ticking through, steeling themselves with either patience or the humility to just order a pilsner in a can. I know him through most of my best days, and many of my worst, and more than anything through the knowledge that I would be a worse person than I am if I had not accepted the challenge of making other people happy - keeping people alive, and introducing them to life best lived in my own small ways - in exchange for cash.

I look forward to getting to know the man more in the days and years ahead, but I'm immeasurably thankful for all the avenues through which I've come to know him already.

Thanks, Chef.

right now as I type this.

I loved him so much.

I was so geeked when Desus met him and they toured the Bronx together. I was sure this fool D was gonna get him on their show at some point. I knew at some point in my life I would run into him at something and I would tell him how I plan trips based on his show. I went to Montreal and gushed to Martin Picard at his restaurant how much I loved seeing him and Anthony acting foolish on his show. It was my birthday that night and he brought me a shot. Martin Picard a real one btw. If you are ever in Montreal please visit Au Pied Cochon. One of the best meals I have ever had in my life.

RIP Anthony.

In response to Reply # 0

I remember listening to it when it first dropped, but listening to it again, posthumously, gives it a different perspective.

http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/repost-anthony-bourdain-from-2011

Late in the podcast he mentions struggling with the side effects of Chantix, one possibility being suicidal thoughts, but this episode was from 2011, and he mentions it in passing, so I'm not reading much into it. It was chilling though, just to hear him say the word.

As a middle aged dude, he was a hero of a lot of us men of a certain age. He one of the best second acts of all time. He was a struggling chef into his 40's, recovering addict, barely able to scratch out a living. He started writing as a catharsis, and it changed his life. Next thing you know, he's in his 50's, travelling to exotic locales, experiencing life to it's fullest.

Clearly, he still had some demons he couldn't shake. A tragic loss.

Sunday ritual at our house. After PG gets back from dropping the kids off, and while we sit down to eat dinner, for an hour I can fall into a world full of taste, colour and inspiration.

I am really going to miss that.

And I'm acutely aware how little we hear from outspoken intelligent punk rock story tellers who don't bother to sugar coat their view of life.
In a world that seems to be moving in an opposite direction on a daily basis...

But, I feel hope to see how many people he managed to connect with over so many sub-sects of humans--which makes me think the revolution is still possible.

It's funny how I've probably heard him say this more than once and never really thought anything of it, like it was just his dark sense of humor. Same thing with that therapy episode of Parts Unknown. Sad.

I wish he was still here. I’m linking the list of episodes to Parts Unknown below. If you haven’t seen the show and are interested in any of these places, you should give it a watch. No Reservations was great but I believe Parts Unknown was some of his best work. Off the top of my head, here are some of my favorite episodes, but really they are all good.

Minas Gerais, Brazil
Massachusetts- Tony goes back to Cape Cod, where he would spend summers in his drug addicted years.
Kenya with Kamau Bell
Vietnam
Hong Kong
Punjab, India
