i think early on they tried to suggest the wayback machine might have been hacked but that was quickly shot down.

recently, and for most of her supporters that's good enough. She's extremely smart, so I doubt she'll ever slip up again (I'm not buying that hacking nonsense). She'll get through this ok. NBC might not even make any official statement about it, which would be optimal for her.

I get all that but there's never any perspective. Someone gets an SNL gig and guaranteed someone will dig through their entire Twitter history and call them on that insensitive joke they made in 2008. Most of us would find it pretty fucked up if people wanted to take the worst, or dumbest thing we ever said and put it out there like it somehow trumps everything else about us.

This would have had zero legs if she had pushed the "I've grown" angle from the beginning, but she was almost certainly operating out of fear. Her career has been at its pinnacle since Melissa Harris-Perry impulsively threw her own show away a year and a half ago and then msnbc gave Joy another chance. I have always had a theory about that. She and her husband had been having tax trouble in the preceding year. She was on Trace and Heben's podcast talking about how she mismanaged her own money. MSNBC had been jerking her around in the early days of the primaries by preempting her show every other weekend because it was clear at that point that this was going to he a historic election cycle. It was frustrating her and she probably didnt want to have to be locked into a new lease on her NYC apartment, to save on money. Those things added up to her impulsively ending the show. But that's just my suspicion.

If she owned it, it would suck for a bit, but most would move on because people grow and change.

She isn't owning it tho, and the "I was HACKED YO!" defense is incredibly transparent.

She's not the first person on the left (any spectrum) that wasn't as good on LGBT issues in 2006. It's a relatively short time period, but the consensus among mainstream liberals has moved a lot. So you apologize, tell people that your life experiences since then have opened your eyes and help you evolve and vow to not be that person again.

Then move on, because that's really all most people want to hear. This hacker BS smelled bad from the start.

Hard for NBC to justify firing her, though. If lying is unacceptable, they've got to explain why Brian Williams (who lied on his NBC job, not old blog posts) is still hanging around. And if it's on the (to be sure, pretty bad) content of her posts, then you've got to look at The Santa Claus Race Authority they recently backed the truck up for.
