"The Logging Off of Facebook Post"

Definitely taking a break for awhile

Anybody else pulling the plug?

Maybe we'll see more activity on the boards

I think FB is going to see a lot deactivations

What's the move when this spills over to other SM platforms

Individual webpages?

Group texts?

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you can't understand it without an explanation

you can't understand it with an explanation

popping up on data mining sites like intelius and spokeo.

i had restricted my fb privacy settings like i do on just about any site/service i join. and i never used/installed any 3rd party apps.
but somehow those other sites still got my info (including a google voice number i only used for fb and kept hidden from friends, friends of friends, etc).

I still think FB is awesome for business.

I read my news feed, watch a video or 3, maybe post or share something interesting or funny from time to time.

I limit my info on FB for obvious reasons.

****************
TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

9. "Here's my Facebook going away message"
In response to Reply # 6

After this inauguration I’ll be making my way off Facebook
I’ve been going back and forth with even writing this post and have ultimately sat down to put my fingers on the keyboard. There’s this clash between the embarrassment of how self-indulgent this feels, how wholly unimportant this is, but also being aware of the information I want to convey, and additionally being in a partnership in which a number of my Facebook friends are our friends.
And that’s the square that I landed on when I started typing, because if you knew me before (wife's name) came along, I deactivated my account constantly, with little or no reasoning. However, when she came along I chose to be a little more “grown up” (untagging from embarrassing pictures, filtering a number of posts for certain audiences, not randomly disappearing on site populated by her closest friends and family and then just as randomly popping back up, etc.) which ultimately lead to today and why I’d like to type something in completion before things just look weird.
So I’ll bring a conversation that I’ve been having offline to my digital world. In the past few weeks, months, year; I’ve been actively leaving less of a digital footprint. It started off with a conversation we were having in the house in which (wife's name) noted how she’d often speak about something aloud and then her Facebook or Google ads would reflect that conversation without having the data input. I forget the resolution from the conversation, it may have been to delete the app, but there was just something uncomfortable about it. In retrospect, I’m not even sure that our assumptions were validated, but the feeling of “what if” was there and that feeling of discomfort hasn’t gone away.
And over the months and years I’ve come to acknowledge that:
1. We all put out an enormous amount of publically available data. Whether it’s where we are, who we’re with, at what time, things we like, and who we communicate with; huge swaths of that are publically available.
2. We all put out an enormous amount of non-publically available data. Whether that’s CVS / Safeway / Kroger reward programs tracking our every purchase or advertisements watched / clicked; technology has only gotten better at developing targeted advertising profiles.
3. “Big data” in of itself isn’t evil. That the mechanisms that say that one person could be susceptible to buying more of Product A through mailers isn’t that big of a deal.
4. “Big data” used for means outside of sales has typically huge impacts on our lives.
5. “Big data” from our offline activities (the non-publically available) is being sold to interests with access to our digital footprints, even those with access to our non-public digital footprints (i.e. screen time, log in locations, site hours, messages).
6. The risks posed by this level of insight and access traditionally, historically, and currently lead to discriminatory practices; whether that’s making determinations of credit lending, setting interest rates, job offers, loan offerings, or housing decisions.
7. The risks are only curtailed and controlled by the government mechanisms and laws in place which additionally require willing enforcements.
8. The mechanisms that will be controlling government and tasked with enforcing laws will be
a. Advocates for industry over regulation
b. Advocates for selective enforcement of laws in a way that’s benefited them over society
c. Lacking the knowledge or experience necessary to serve the people.

I have had these conversations offline with a few friends and we’ve all agreed that we’re all surveilled by the government to a degree. We imagine that it’s been that way long before we were here and it’ll happen long after we’ll gone. I concede as much. But what I’m not wanting to do is contribute to a system that is building against “us”. So I’m treating this like I do with recycling, I may not be able to stem the tide of pollution or ill effects of a developing world individually, and even with my small actions there’s much more I can do, but I’m not willing to do nothing.

With all of those words here a few links
“Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter Provided Data Access for a Surveillance Product Marketed to Target Activists of Color” -https://www.aclunc.org/blog/facebook-instagram-and-twitter-provided-data-access-surveillance-product-marketed-target – this one is about our social media accounts providing geo-data to monitor civil dissent. Peaceful protesting is a right that people died and die for.
” Facebook is quietly buying information from data brokers about its users' offline lives” -http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-data-brokers-2016-12 this one is essentially Facebook buying up your shopping habits with little to no way for you to know or opt out considering how frequently they change who they buy from
“How Facebook’s Ad Tool Fails to Protect Civil Rights” -http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/10/facebook-ad-discrimination/505703/ this one is about how despite being in violation of the Fair Housing Act, advertisers can determine who to target housing ads to, essentially digital red lining.

In response to Reply # 9

I left out any of the political shit so as to not cause too much noise and that was the most sanitized thoughts I could come up with, but yeah no shit. Giving foreign entities backdoor access to your most private data and updating in real time is some of the goofiest mess ever. And government is supposed to protect you from that and often yourself.

It's one thing when your Facebook is just you.
It's another thing when you got your wifes friends and family asking questions and looking funny.
I only had like 200 something Facebook contacts and like 92 of those were shared.

It's awful. I'll admit that. There's almost nothing of value to be found on there these days. Most posts turn to shit in minutes, every discussion gets run off the rails by some idiotic conspiracy, and there's way too much pity posting.

Having said all that, it's still a great way to communicate with my friends and family, and an awesome way to find things to do on a random night. (The Event calendar is a Godsend). Some of the groups I'm in a re really helpful too. I gave it up for a month or so in the days following the 2016 election, and I didn't really miss it, but yeah. I went back.

I *wanna* cut it off, but I rely on it for a LOT of things.

https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-notification-spam-two-factor/

FACEBOOK HAS ALWAYS nudged truant users back to its platform though emails and notifications. But recently, those prods have evolved beyond comments related to activity on your own profile. Now Facebook will nag you when an acquaintance comments on someone else’s photo, or when a distant family member updates their status. The spamming has even extended to those who sign up for two-factor authentication—which is a great way to turn people off to that extra layer of security.

“The part of it that bugs me is that two-factor authentication is something should be encouraging people to use, but instead the way this is working here is that they’re driving people away from two-factor and making people less secure,” says Matt Green, a professor at the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute, who has done contracted security work for Facebook in the past. “It’s abusive, people’s attention is deliberately tweaked by what looks like a two-factor authentication message.”

Green says he’s received near-daily SMS messages from Facebook since January alerting him that one of his friends performed some action on the platform. Before he started receiving the messages, Green says he hadn’t logged into Facebook for a long time and had actually forgotten his password.

The weirdest part about the SMS notifications is what happens if you reply to them. If you respond, your message is posted to your own profile. If the notifications involve someone else’s content, users say the text replies inadvertently show up as comments on other people’s photos or statuses. I set up text two-factor authentication myself to try this out, and my text reply did end up on my own profile.

FACEBOOK
Facebook's response about what was happening with SMS messages didn't shed very much light on the issue. “We give people control over their notifications, including those that relate to security features like two-factor authentication. We’re looking into this situation to see if there’s more we can do to help people manage their communications,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

But in a blog post Friday, Facebook's security head Alex Stamos described the SMS spam as a bug. "It was not our intention to send non-security-related SMS notifications to these phone numbers, and I am sorry for any inconvenience these messages might have caused," Stamos wrote, adding that the company would soon do away with the ability to post to Facebook via SMS.1

If you don’t want to risk receiving annoying text messages but still want to enable two-factor authentication to protect your Facebook account, you can also sign up using a code generator, which doesn’t require forking over your phone number. You can also turn off Facebook notifications on iOS by going to Settings > Notifications > Facebook and switching the toggle off. On Android, go to Settings > Applications > Application Manager > Facebook > Notifications, and switch them off. Of course, that won't help with the emails.

Facebook Needs Your Love
The latest onslaught of engagement tactics come not even a month after Mark Zuckerberg said he wanted to “make sure the time we all spend on Facebook is time well spent,” and warned that engagement might go down on the platform as a result of new efforts designed to emphasize “meaningful connections.” The messages appear designed help counter that slump.

A number of people say that they had also seen an uptick in emails from Facebook letting them know that everyday events had happened on the platform, like someone sharing a photo or posting a status. “I stopped checking Facebook and deleted the app for a while so they started emailing me nonsense notifications,” says Tucker Higgins, a Facebook user in New York, who says the first message he received notified him that an acquaintance had commented on that person's own status. He then began getting numerous emails from Facebook with similar messages—sometimes multiple times a day.

TUCKER HIGGINS
One email even asked Higgins if he was having trouble logging into his account (he wasn’t). Bloomberg noted last month that people were receiving similar emails about account access around the world. Facebook told Bloomberg that the messages weren’t a re-engagement tactic, but Higgins says the barrage began after he had deleted the app.

TUCKER HIGGINS
The spammy notifications also show up on the app itself, and are often pushed to the lockscreen of a user's phone. I've received one informing me that a friend who moved away years ago posted a status, and another that an old babysitter uploaded a photo. Other users say they’re receiving similar messages about distant acquaintances. “A person from high school I haven’t interacted with in literally years even on Facebook added a photo and I got a notification,” says Brett Williams, another Facebook user in New York.

Junk Mail
Despite the annoyance, Facebook likely uses these new tactics simply because they work.

“I think they very much count on the fact that it will produce an addictive response. Not for everybody, for a percentage of people getting it. If it works for 10 percent that’s a win for them. It’s still economically viable,” says David Greenfield, the founder of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction and assistant clinical professor for psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. “It might be somebody that you want to hear from, but you don’t know, the only way to know is to check it.”

'I think they very much count on the fact that it will produce an addictive response.'

DAVID GREENFIELD, UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Greenfield also pointed out that Facebook isn’t the first platform to deploy these kinds of alerts. Twitter, for example, has been sending push notifications about activity occurring on the platform since last year, like when a number of people you follow all interact with the same tweet.

The new notifications appear to be part of a series of efforts to carry out what Zuckerberg says is Facebook's new mission: to “bring people closer together.” For example, Facebook is also prompting people to hangout with each other in real life. It’s encouraging users to celebrate the day they became friends with a specific acquaintance on Facebook as a kind of social media holiday. Facebook even tried to rebrand its own anniversary as “friends day” earlier this month.

Facebook’s new efforts often feel so annoying because it’s easy to forget that it's not just a social network, but a for-profit advertising business. The new notifications and features aren’t really that at all—they’re spam and marketing campaigns. It’s not unusual for other types of online businesses to send users texts or emails to promote their services. Facebook's service just happens to be connecting you with your friends in exchange for your attention. “You wouldn’t have a stock selling for $180 a share if it was about people talking and making nice,” says Greenfield.

Instagram and WhatsApp are both owned by facebook. i havent been on facebook for probably 7 years and im not too familiar how integrated these apps are with facebook, if at all.

even if these apps can't/don't collect the same type of data and are "independent" from facebook is there any reason to avoid them?

Is FB really that different nowadays?

Suggested posts
Adverts
etc...

you're getting plenty of spam on the book...fosho

...but, that's kinda what I'm asking...

FB is basically a centralized location for my notifications

...I think gmail can supplant its utility...by actually opening my emails...

If anybody has any other recs, I'm definitely interested

I mostly follow bands and venues for notifications on upcoming shows

I regularly check fusicology and oh my rockness...they usually have it covered

Where do I even KNOW dis muthafukka from?

Thank Ra for the mutual-friends indicator.

But yeah, if I had to log off, I prolly wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Dude has always been a sensitive mofo

First off he and his wife share a profile which is wack. So you have some post that just look mad weird for a dude to be posting but also show some his wife has him by the balls.

Then he is the type to stir shit up and get upset when folks don’t agree with him.

He’s one of those guys... so now he looks like more of a hoe by making this announcement like he is being forced off or wronged because he can’t cope with opinions that differ from his

Have a google tv (I don't) or smart tv (I dont) you're marketed to but not targeted. Things go by your local (in house) network and you're marketed towards your trends. Those companies are invested in your money, bit giving your money or business to anyone else, so at worse you're vulnerable to hacking or a data leak.

With Facebook you're given a unique code for your user point. That unique code is you. And it can be specified to you by all of the other information you've given, email address, if it was a .edu, contact info, friends, likes, locations, apps ...more and more ways that's you.

That data is then merged with offline data purchased by Facebook ( giant card; cvs, Safeway rewards) they purchase information like that to create a better ad profile of you specifically. And then they sell that data to third parties while also allowing ads to target YOU. Not I want to get all people in your network that are over forty and listen to hip hop. Thats general, they target it to YOU. And then they didn't limit their data to onlly advertisers (which ad buys are relatively cheap) they also opened it up to analytics and testers and bad actors, allowing more and more people to find and TARGET YOU.

No other network can do that, no other network has such lax controls either.

damn near every app asked for some type of permission. Even if you say no to all of them guess what? They prolly still doing it cause why not?

I just think its short sighted to walk around with a tracking device to make phone calls and use for surfing the internet and think you are somehow safer without FB.

...that is...if I eliminate the platform...?

I get it...we're being tracked...webpages, cookies, cellphone history, etc...

Let's say you have alladat...how are you going to use it against me?

My issue with FB is the manipulation

using that data to force stories (and yes...some it was fake news) into my TM

I don't doubt that big brother has a profile on all of us based on our internet traffic

outside of some legal action, how would that data be weaponized/used against me if I don't have a SM platform

best analogy I can come up with

what FB did in this last election feels like the modern version of the southern strategy

they sold user data, to a 3rd party, that then used that data to further sow discord in our political process

...and yes, I believe they helped get Trump elected by doing so...

I'm not arguing against your opinion

where I'm at with it...is now that we know exactly what happened...I would be even stupider for continuing to willfully participate

based on our board interaction, I highly doubt you just scroll through all of the BS and fake news stories...I highly doubt it.

I spend most of my time getting news from here or from yahoo or huffpo

So i'm now subjected to prompts & "suggestions" to follow the random IG models followed by the people that I follow....

Just because somebody I follow likes looking at phat asses all day....doesn't mean EYE want my feed populated with suggestions to follow those same phat asses..

I'm now forced to UNFOLLOW other people that post otherwise decent family/kid friendly content simply because they ALSO happen to enjoy following a bit of non-family friendly content even though they don't necessarily post that type of content.

other than by looking at their profile for people they follow?

I'm asking for me bc I follow a ton of IG fitness models. So i'm sure my friends are getting suggestions based off of that. That's part of the reason why I have a new IG account. My last IG account I was following all the IG 'models'. My boy even said 'maaannnn you be on them jawns HEAVY". Now, with my second account, i'm all about the fitness jawns lol.

Anyway...
That bar is horizontal scrolling instead of vertical....and on it there are people that Instagram "suggests" that you follow. Beneath the persons name it will say something like "Followed by GROOVPHI" or "Based on people you follow" and I think i've even seen it say "Liked by GROOVPHI" or something like that....

but I will see the person's face & screen name and beneath that it'll say "Followed by...." or something like that.

It's more of an issue on the Search tab though....THAT joint be populated with some wildness....and it's compounded because if I CLICK on something...it'll just populate MORE of that type of stuff "Based on Photos you've liked" even though I don't be "liking" shit...

i see. that's like... ignorable tho. i don't think that plays into your algorithm. and i mean, its not crazy for IG to assume you may like the same things the people you've followed like.

>It's more of an issue on the Search tab though....THAT joint

i mean, i rarely even go to that tab so that may explain that. i feel like thats an area for people who don't create content cause all i ever see is reposts or memes. I guess thats my thing, i only really follow accounts of people who create content so my recommended stuff reflects that i suppose. I don't really feel obliged to follow people i know simply because i know them. i barely feel obliged on Facebook.

I would say they were one degree off on me. But it's crazy. I literally post nothing on FB. I liked a few artists so I get updates on when they might be coming near me. But that's about it.

I wonder what info they compile to figure this out.

Yeah, same here. it says "very liberal" when i'm probably just more left leaning, or moderate in some cases. but given just faccebook interactions and likes, i can see how they would come to that conclusion.

never heard of some of the "advertisers you've interacted with" either. whole thing is pretty creepy.

This seem so random and made up on some fake National Enquirer, Star Magazine, Us Weekly headline when you at the grocery store in line to check out.

Story is funny as hell & ghetto but knowing Jay, Bey, & Tiff it could be some truth to it, but I doubt it.

i just crack up at people using facebook as a platform to announce they're leaving facebook.

or their need to write a signing off monologue, or threats to leave so people can beg them not to.

it's attention whoring. that's why those people generally wont leave, or will come back after a short time.

and the ones who actually delete their accounts permanently weren't the ones who gave speeches.

it's just been my experience 100% of the time lol

it's not a platform that encourages awesomeness, plus even if people do post cool/interesting/useful stuff, you have no control over who else comments and interacts with it.

as a platform it encourages and allows fuckery to encroach on your experience, unless your only linked up with like 5 people.

No one is posting anything awesome on Facebook for the most part. Maybe you guys are following some folks who post some really great stuff. I'm just bored at the mundanity.

You're entirely right, you can just keep scrolling, but i found myself just scrolling more and more, and finding it less interesting. The novelty and functionality is diminishing for me.

Then again, I usually scroll the news feed for no more than a minute or 2 every few days.

I send happy birthdays, like a few photos or respond to friends and fam back home if an elder passes.

My college peeps, we usually talk hip hop or movie/tv social issues and that’s it.

I still get frustrated by those who post too much but that’s my issue not theirs. It’s a platform for people to post.

There was definitely a time when I was in your shoes but then I read this quote.

“FB is where people go to lie and Twitter is where they tell the truth”

He was sending dirty text messages with some chick. I don't know if they ever met or had plans to meet.

But the wife somehow got in his phone and saw all this while they were together on an international flight. That meant dude was trapped for like 15 hours.

She did a video recording of them on the flight with her asking him info about the other chick. Dude was so uncomfortable and just gave answers like, "It's nothing." "I don't know." "It wasn't really a big deal."

She put the dirty transcripts from the texts up.

She found out the other girl's name and posted a pic of her LinkedIn page (but she took that down kinda quick).

At some point, she said her husband got drunk on the flight and asked someone else to switch seats with him.

This went on over the course of a long weekend and I was riveted.

Best to capitalize and buy $FB, $GOOG and $AMNZ stock because they are AD revenue gold mines. Actually buy the options, and store your profits in a stock.

Peep this article.

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/google-sells-future-powered-your-personal-data-n870501

It makes a great point. FB said all the right things before we found it about CA. I work for a cyber security firm and while I don’t know shut about the ins and outs one thing they pointed out is companies won’t tell you about this shit until they have to (when someone snitches).

Google collects 5 times as much data as FB and used it to create ads and made 31 Billion in 1 qtr.

It’s pretty foolish and pig headed to think Google isnt someone you should be more concerned with when it comes to your data.

Kinda comes across like you don’t want to let go of google even tho you y’all like it are making a real purge from social media and companies who collect our data.

But here is more info as it's mostly likely used internally first to see what if any new apps they can develop. Everywhere I go I'm asked by my phone to write a review, automated photo albums and stories of my weekend trip, etc. Big Data, Machine Learning and Hadoop has created an environment in tech companies where you collect any and all data points and figure out what you want to do with it later or let a program tell you the interesting themes.

still connected through IG though. Deleted my main twitter account last year. Deleted my other account earlier this year.

Facebook is really building the walled garden though because you can't even really see comments on FB posts without a FB account. I was linked to a Facebook post about the rise in hate crimes in my area, all of my county council members had responded to that post and I couldn't see any of the responses. Shit was crazy.

America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.

For me. The most I will have is arguments in my posts between people from different parts of my life but those often remain cordial and respectful. Hard to go all out on someone you actually know and they full government right there.

Here there is none of that restraint.

That being said the conversation on my FB can be way less interesting because people are so polite and mostly in the same few bubbles.

I come here to hear from people from different walks of life.

The “hide from news feed” feature works wonders. So does not accepting friend requests.

I’m not on there for meaningful discussions. It’s just a convenient way to kinda stay in touch with family, friends, and acquaintances (ones that I like) that I don’t see that often. That’s all I use it for, and it serves its purpose. The annoying people don’t even exist to me on there.

it tends to be the Trump obsessed people on either side or conspiracy heads and older people who are most susceptible to fake news

but i at least still find practical purposes on FB to keep up with fam and friends, and its easy enough for me to edit out the bs.

Twitter can be entertaining but it's pretty much dogpile central. it seems to encourage people to be shitty towards one another, and really seems to bring out the worst in people.

In response to Reply # 0

...and the Yahoo listserv I'm on is considering FB as an alternative.

I'd prefer Google Groups, followed by Slack.

I don't like being forced to have a FB account to engage/spectate in discussions, receive industry news and jobs opportunities.

Everyone has email--not everyone has FB.

If we go the FB route, I'm going to have mofos trying add me, etc, which will lead to all kinds of unnecessary problems. Nooooo!

but let’s be honest.

If you put 5 years into your hobby or side hustle and it turned into a big deal I doubt you would just give it up to some white dudes in suits who want to take it to the next level.

Had a coworker say he doesn’t watch the sports because he can still go out and play them.

The fuck?

I have a coworker who isn’t into sports... and that’s fine, but don’t make it seem like it’s mindless entertainment and then go into long rants about comic book movies.

Ok
