The Chi seems to be a more serious show while Atlanta incorporates more comedy. I haven't seen all of Atlanta, but from what I have seen, both shows appear to do a really good job of making everyday situations very entertaining. I was watching The Chi last week, thinking it's pretty brilliant that they can make such simple things so gripping, b/c it's not often that I'm so into a show not dealing with surrealism or sci-fi. The only thing I need from The Chi is for some of these younger peoples' fathers to exist in some capacity. They don't have to be in the house, but damn do they exist at all? Like they don't see them, talk to them or anything? That's pretty odd.

a. I was a huge Donal Glover fan to begin with
b. Atlanta sets out to be Twin Peaks (My favorite TV show) with rappers
c. This is the second season of Atlanta

The Chi is still REALLY good, I'm anxious to see where it goes, the characters are very engaging (the three young boys are all good actors, strong characters)

In response to Reply # 0

I'm biased, tho. But, seriously, I've just now got invested in these characters from The Chi and the season's almost over. I realize Atlanta has to do more with less time and that's why it's characters are likely executed better. Just needed a faster or more interesting pace for The Chi. The Chi's very solid, but Atlanta's genius won't be fully realized until it's over.

The clothes are all wrong, cats don't dress like that at all. The lack of Chicago slang, the wrong locations (Westside standing in for the Southside), it's just corny.

Maybe she wasn't going for authenticity, but this show could be Anywhere, USA. It doesn't rep Chicago at all, not like how The Wire repped Baltimore pretty accurately.

I'm surprised Common signed on to this.

I get it but at the same time, I don’t get it

A bunch of movies have been filmed in Pittsburgh and when they shoot on the north side when it’s supposed to be the south side I just shrug. It doesn’t bother me to the point it detracts from the movie.

Like, if they say it's Inglewood, it's Inglewood. If they say it's Baldwin Hills, it's Baldwin Hills. Even minor minor things, like they'll drive by something on the way to The Dunes or her job, and it'll really be going the correct direction.

And as a bonus, her show Giants is based in L.A., and it's not only accurate, but shows characters passing The Dunes on the way to other places in L.A.

Black gentrified...like, Rusty Pot Cafe is Black owned, but just has a slight young, hipster appeal to it in some way, even though it's regular soul food. Of course spots like "Stuff we eat" have been there for years, and it's vegan, so that was kind of the start. It's a few other places, like a new ice cream type spot, but they're all just regular Black at this point.

John Singleton didn't have them wearing head-to-toe Ralph Lauren and Timberland boots in Baby Boy, or Boyz in the Hood. That's not what most L.A. people wear.

Hype Williams didn't have them wearing khakis and Chuck Taylors in Belly. That's obviously not New York.

You can't film in Santa Monica and say it's Watts.

The essence of those movies is undeniably L.A. and New York. The details matter.

Not to come off as nitpicky, but The Chi just doesn't have that essence that's uniquely Chicago. It could be Anywhere, USA.

gotdamn I'm sad that place is changing

actually, I really think an interesting long term place to buy would be central/south central

like, how is that area right next to downtown but its not (as far as I can tell) being gentrified?

In fact, all of your complaints about The Chi are complaints I've heard from BMore residents about The Wire.

Individual stories of Chi have gotten interesting. I forgave the geographic mistakes etc.

Atl is my favorite show on TV period (don’t watch a lot of tv). Complex humanism displayed trumps everything

Most shows take a season and a half or so to really find their groove

I see people comparing this to the Wire, but other than Sonja being on the show it doesn't really seem THAT similar

In response to Reply # 21

it had some great characters, but the characters were there to serve the story. each season was structured like its own novel

flip that with something like the Sopranos or Mad Men, which were heavy on character development... story was always secondary

the Chi, (so far anyway) feels more character driven. it's not as much about what's happening as much as how the characters navigate through it.

aside from clothing styles and flip phones making it look dated, it holds up beautifully.

there are very few shows that are on that next level. There's pretty much The Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and then there's everything else. some which are very good shows, but not on that elite level. The Chi is a good show that has potential to be a very good show. That's about it.

I usually rewatch series from the very beginning like I'm watching for the first time again. I just can't get back into a show like the Wire if I jump in somewhere in the middle.

Not saying that's what you did, just a suggestion.

One thing I really like about this show is that it never feels the need to press the action by inserting alotta unnecessary drama. The finale was what I want from a finale in that it had slightly more going on than a normal episode (which this show can actually afford, unlike some other shows) and it provided some closure to the season while giving me plenty to look forward to.

Gonna be waiting for season 2 with 'babies breath'(c)

I think the storyline with the kids is my favorite. Growing up I was a combination of Kevin and Papa and I had friend that was very similar to Jake that went down a different path, it definitely hits home.

Steven Williams portrayal of Quentin is both compelling and problematic.

I can identify with Brandon also, a good guy from the hood trying to do the right thing but he keeps getting sucked back in plus his complicated relationship with Jerrika.

Brandon's cousin Hannibal might've been my favorite character I hope they bring him back lol.

Dope scene.

I just wish dude didn’t tell his mom they found the killer before she signed that offer. He had to know she wasn’t going to sign once she heard that news. Then again, he never wanted her to sell to begin with.

and then the whole “you slept with a coworker”

Man, why fools always sleep with their coworker as soon as shit goes left at home?

So I guess the night didn’t end with a kiss.

I mean, I wouldn’t end it with a kiss based on the vibe she was giving.

I just hate when folks immediately go and tell their SO. Makes it seem like they used a person just to help them get out of a relationship.

Its still mainly about dudes sitting around getting high. If that's what you're into I could see how you would think its an all-time great.

A story about a 35 year-old "up and coming" rapper and his fuck-up cousin/manager gets old after a while. The peripheral characters actually make the show.

I guess they were going for a black Seinfeld "show about nothing" steeze but it doesn't quite work the same.

The slice was deafening.

>it’s cool that folks love it but pretty soon it’s going
>to be some “OMG, the scene where they didn’t speak” it
>said soooo much about the plight of Black folk.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

Also i like both shows but the titles are so fucking lazy to me.

For someone so creative like Glover....that shit is a lazy title. And ATL already was a movie. I wish this had a different title. Its memorable and easy to remember but creatively unlike him or what i would expect from him.

My boy tried to compare it to the Wire, and I damn near decapitated him. The Chi's gangsta angle especially is sooo predicatable. You can pretty much anticipate what's next.

Spoilers

So Ronnie goes to prison for killing who he thought was his son's murderer. We later find out Quentin was Jason's real father (and he takes care of Jason's actual killers)
I read a review a few weeks back that said Jason was a product of Tracy being raped by Quentin. Was this revealed in the show, or suggested in the show? I don't know if i completely missed it, or the reviewer was just making an assumption.

but I googled and found this recap that says it was revealed on the show

https://www.avclub.com/a-quiet-finale-ends-a-successful-first-season-of-the-ch-1823880950

must have been a one liner in some dialogue between Tracy and Ronnie?

Did she reveal it at the support group meeting?

79. "so whats the exact metric we're judging the shows on?"
In response to Reply # 0

and why are we judging them?

One is black life and trying to call out the absurdities that can come with black life through a comedic lense

the other one is not funny, not absurd and pretty serious.

Its like comparing SNL vs Law and Order

story/plot

SNL can make a serious point through jokes and Law and Order can be funny.

In response to Reply # 80

thats my point

a better comparison would be

The Chi vs. Queen Sugar or The Chi vs. GreenLeaf or even The Chi vs. Black Lightning

what do these two shows exactly have in common besides being TV shows about black people...they don't even really reference the same struggles or use the same archetypes
