It's a fucked up story, and young Kobe Bryant was a real asshole (especially compared to the half asshole he is now) but he was not convicted and it's just sloppy journalism.
People like to overlook that Kobe was really unafraid to make himself look bad during that time also. He came out looking like a horrible person, but it was pretty clear he didn't rape anybody, he just had an Aziz-type experience with this girl.

It probably is the most likely explanation for why things went bad (though absent from the coverage I've been reading to remind myself what happened, it really only comes up on message boards from what I've seen so far). I'm not saying Kobe didn't do a bad thing, and from what I remember neither was Kobe. He straight up admitted the encounter turned nonconsensual, and he had that brutally ineffectual comment about it not being sexy at all and having to finish himself off. That's not a good look, but...
I don't know, I don't really want to come to Kobe's defense over anything, but it always bothers me when people just bring all their biases into a legal discussion and ignore the words they're using in their own articles or just jump to conclusions, like the Derrick Rose thing. It's not that I mind people being reminded of what sucks about Kobe Bryant, but he wasn't convicted, and it's frustrating to read people just gloss over that to get to the whole "he should have lost his entire career and he didn't and really nothing in the world is good" angle.
It's not a clean story, and honestly it feels shitty just typing "and it happened fifteen years ago," but it did, and it WAS litigated, and maybe Kobe remained a piece of shit but maybe he learned from the experience and became a better person. He's certainly learned how to at least APPEAR to be a family man in the last five, six years or so.

Like was said earlier in this post, the public discourse around this back in 03 was different, as it wasn't the type of "jumped out on her and held her down while she tried to fight it off" that we were conditioned to believe was the only way rape happens.
