"While we're shitting on classics the OG Star Wars movie was garbage...."

TNT had the Star Wars marathon over the weekend and the first one was just terrible. Hamill, Ford & Fisher were all horrible actors. The costumes and props were a joke.

>not getting cool
>why hate on those that love it?

Because, for me, as an outsider, its like being the victim of that one guy who knows that ONE joke and he tells it all the fucking time. And when he tells it to you he looks right into your eyes while laughing and says "HEY! Isnt this funny! Thats a funny joke! C'mon! Have a sense of humor buddy!"

Thats. What. This. Shit. Is. Like.

I cant think of a single movie universe I would want to repeatedly visit over and over and over and over.

Like, aint ya'll got some other renaissance alien-universe asian-sword-fighting pseudo-philosophical fake-deep shit to get a boner over?

Its like, stop fucking this shit down our throats. I get it. G. Lucas did some shit a long long time ago about the spice or some shit. (yes I KNOW THE SPICE IS FROM DUNE)

Every 1 to 8 years a new Star Wars things comes along and like clockwork folks lose their gotdamned brains.

"OMG YOU GUYS! THIS LASER SWORD THINGY IS PURPLE!!!!!!!! OMG. MUCH EXCITE!"

"OMG YOU GUYZZZZZZZZZZZZ, THIS OTHER LASER SWORD THINGY HAS LIKE, UM, LIKE TWO OTHER LASER THINGYS ON THE ENDS!!!!!!"

Gotdamnitt Adam Driver, go back to pining after that dumpy gal in Brooklyn and keep it weird my man.

For all the flaws of the star wars universe and mythology the thing that makes it stand out is that so many have tried to improve upon it and failed.

Marvel seems to be doing it. Same with Game of Thrones I think.

But so many others DCU, Matrix, Terminator, and even Star Trek failed at what the Star Wars Universe achieved.

There are two reasons why the original Star Wars is held in such high regard - first innovation, and second legacy. But as a film in and of itself watching it today and being non-biased? Yeah it isn't that good.

I was born in 79 and the first film I remember seeing in the theater was Return of the Jedi in 83. I grew up LOVING Star Wars. But I remember watching it in middle school and thinking "that's it?" The dialogue was wack, the plot was simple as heck, some of the effects had already started aging poorly.

But that movie was innovative as heck - the effects, the music, the scale, everything. That can't be denied. And it's legacy speaks for itself - look at everything else that's followed it.

Empire Strikes Back STILL holds up as a great film even separate from the SW universe, and the depth that it added makes the original SW look better. Honestly the depth that EVERYTHING in that universe added ends up boosting A New Hope.

I'll also say that Alec Guinness was legitimately great - there have been multiple films, TV series, and books made all off of the little dialogue he had in the first Star Wars and his delivery is a huge part with why that worked.

shit was just something the world has never experienced before...and Empire gave it the life that the franchise Universe could be expanded into the biggest shit in humanity. You can front on A New Hope, but Empire, not so much...that is if you have critical criteria to judge it upon

into most sci-fi - Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers(for whatever reason I never really got into Star Trek).

I understand that it was groundbreaking at the the time, it just didn't hold well like a lot of sci-fi from that era. What really stood out to me was the acting though it was pretty bad lol.

than modern action films. It’s still good, but I can get why someone might be confused as to why it’s so beloved. That’s one strike against it. The other big problem is that the 90’s cut is markedly worse, and you can’t actually see the Theatrical Relase version. The second film is fantastic. The third is meh. All three prequel’s sucked, as did Rogue One. That’s three good movies in an eight film series.

If you came to Star Wars in the 90s or later, you probably SHOULDN’T like it

With music its a little different. Its generally whatever era you hit your prime in(late teens into your 20's) will usually resonate most with you.

I didn't see the movies for the first time until I was 24 or 25. So maybe that's it. All those years of seeing people lose there minds over it (which I never understood), and then when I finally saw the original 3 I was like -- Oh. That's it? I've only seen bits and pieces of the prequels and I fell asleep in The Force Awakens...

I appreciate the universe-building, as I'm a fan of things like that. And usually I go for tales of revolution as well. Star Wars just doesn't do it for me.

as the original trilogy.

We just see the prequels as the crap that they are because we saw them as adults. The people who really love the originals fell in love with them as kids, when they didn't know any better.

OG trilogy was

*one movie that took a risk

*one movie that had crazy emotion and had the biggest twist in american cinema history

*one movie that was a cute marketing ploy towards the youth and sustainable action

the prequels were just soulless CGI movies with glimpses of good action

I wish David Lynch had been able to direct return of the Jedi. That would have been hard.

I heard Lucas asked him to direct and he turned it down, told Lucas he should keep himself since was his story. It wouldn't have been good idea at all, interesting maybe but we saw how Dune turned out. Maybe he could have made the entire SW universe a homeless man's dream tho...

A New Hope was good, too.

I tend to think of the OG trilogy as dope, until I see ROTJ and those fucking Ewoks.

ESB and Revenge of the Sith.
i like the rest of em. but those are the only 2 i continually come back to.

a)Hamill was a bad actor agreed, but Fisher and Ford and Cushing were fine. Alec Guinness and James Earl Jones were good.

b)It's much slower than films are today.

c)It has become so imitated structurally and visually and thematically that it's hard to not watch and think you've seen some it done better elsewhere.

Some things that are still unbeatable.
1) The Music. The score is AMAZING and in many scenes it's a character on its own.

2)The opening scene/images are iconic. The small ship chased by a ship that is too big for the screen was and is amazing.

3)The sound effects were a huge step up from almost every previous sci-fi movie.

4)So many iconic scenes and images: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" Vader's first appearance, the droids in the escape pd, the desert with the skeleton, the Jawas and their sand crawler, the Sand People, the design of the ships, the stormtrooper suits, the death star, the creature cantina, the Leia hologram, dogfights, just so much.

I watched Harmy's Despecialized Edition a few years ago and it's still an engrossing movie.

The best film ever? No. A masterpiece? Only in some ways.

Bad film? No.

Everybody always acts infinitely better under other directors. I do think the whole star wars universe is overrated, but one thing lucas does well is world and environment build. I can't hate on that aspect.
