"Excuse Ms Fufu, when I met your ass...."

Why weren't black Americans offended by this line from Jay Z's girls, girls, girls?

I know it originates from Eddie's "bush bitch" bit and anyone whose seen Raw can attest, it got a huge applause from what I assume was a majority black audience, so the same question applies.

I can see black Americans getting offended if a white person said it because that would be a slander against all of us but in an african-american conflict with Africans I think most americans would side with the African-American.

Deez ninjaz conditioning has been conditioned.

Our Africanity alone is what distinguishes Black-American culture/arts/aesthetics/customs from non-Black American culture as a whole.

You missed my point about ingroup versus outgroups. My response has nothing to do with anyone not recognizing their African roots.

How is it any different from a Kenyan making a joke about Nigerians to another Kenyan, and the Kenyans laugh?

I get your point regarding in-groups and out groups. Ghanaians and Nigerians go at it all day every day but its still all good between us for the most part.

Unfortunately, that analogy is not fitting here because the joke does not apply exclusively to Africans but to all black people (unless you pass as none black). I feel many AA and other non-continental Africans often feel negative stereotypes of Africa has no impact on who they are hence is of no concern.

The negative perception the rest of America has of Black Americans has its roots in the perception of Africa as being INNATELY primitive...and no, 400 yrs hasn't really changed that. I am not saying every non-black person sees black people in this way but it's definitely been part of the narrative.

My issue is when black people buy into that narrative yet fail to recognise its application to themselves. We should all fight to dispel that narrative even if only for selfish reasons (i.e. even if you have no affinity for Africa)

Let me get this straight. When Ghanaians and Nigerians make fun of each other, it's all good, because yall cool (The Ingroup includes Ghanaians and Nigerians).

When African-Americans make fun of Africans, it's racism and lack of knowledge of self and exhibits our conditioning because we should see ourselves as members of the ingroup of the African Diaspora) but if we were members of the ingroup, then we should be able to make such jokes like the Ghanaians and Nigerians.

Their is also a lot of generalization about African-Americans like you would expect someone to treat and outgroup.

Buddy...i'm going to have to assume you are not black. My bad if i've got that wrong but i don't know how else to explain it to you.

When you make fun of group, you generally don't go for traits or characteristics that can be attributed to your own group or it would defeat the purpose. For example Ghanaian men have been known for being short so a Nigerian may go in on us with that. Nigerians have been known for being 419 merchants so we'll go in on them with that. It wouldn't make sense for a Nigerian to make fun of Ghanaians for being fraudsters - it just wouldn't make sense.

My point: Jay\Eddie using stereotypes which historically have been cultivated by our oppressors to go in on Africans went largely unnoticed because many AA's don't believe it's a stereotype that is applicable to them (or negatively impacts them)

Fufu is a West African dish...thats not really my issue. The line goes as follows: "Excuse me miss fufu when I met your ass you were dead broke and naked now you want half".

Its a play on an Eddie Murphy bit which feeds off the White Supremacist notion that Africans are primitive

So the notion of African people being primitive is something we came up with all by ourselves?

This place loves to go back in time and apply today’s mathematics to old shit. Eddie also had faggot jokes... pretty sure he evolved since then.

As far as Jay is concerned... dude rapped about selling weed and called his girl his bitch.

Far more important things to worry about than old ass raps and old ass comedy skits.

rappers says stuff about certain groups?

Been a long time for me to remember any offense by Black people about rappers saying something about certain groups.

Non-Black people didn't like Ice Cube talking about Koreans (or Lauryn Hill saying "fake nails done by Koreans") but I don't remember Black people being offended by what rappers have said about certain groups.

STOP IT.

Hindsight is 20/20. Everything is problematic now but stop applying today's standards to yesterday's events.
ya'll hate to put things in context and perspective that yes back then a lot of the music and shows we watched are terrible by today's standards but why would we complain about it THEN when it was the norm?

If you want to talk about how music previously was filled with offensive statements, misogyny, and patriarchy...then that's one thing. But to ask why people weren't offended back then is being ahistoric to the time and cultural norms. You refuse to look at prospective and context, which could lend to a greater topic and more valid conversation. Your question could be rephrased to say "why was this acceptable at the time" and people would respond and build in different ways.

I answered your question. People weren't offended because this was the cultural norm. Now you could build on that or continue being a dick who refuses to use logic and intellect. I think we both know what you will do though.

Again, your inference is that times have changed but you provide zero evidence to suggest that they have.

It was. I liked the song but the line never sat well with me.

I ask the question to black Americans because there is a strong sense of being other (i.e. different to continental Africans). In my view, all black people should take issue with it regardless of where you were born, because all notions of what you are as a black person originates from how others perceive Africa.

The premise for original Eddie Murphy bit is steeped in the notion the Africans are primitive... which is a white supremacist idea. Black people (both within the diaspora and continental) may have bought into it but it doesn't change the source

Yes it was clever word play by Jay but we can't ignore its problematic simply because its a hot song

If people feel Eddie is being nice (or Jay-Z is being nice), people will think that is "fake" or "weak"

People know if Black Americans get pissed off at West Indians in a certain situation, Black Americans will likely say: "those f*** West Indians!!!" People know that's "raw" or "real"

So, that vibe attitude will never completely go away from comedy or hip-hop, because "raw" and "realness" are admired in comedy and hip-hop - definitely not "nice-ness"

This is what holds us back the most the most IMO

Musa , have you seen the movie Heritage Africa? It's a movie set in colonial Gold Coast. The central character is a European educated district commissioner who's view of his own people is through the lens of his colonial masters.

Its sad but what's worse is many of us are still afflicted by this condition.

The movie is a freebie on youtube ...its well worth the watch if you have the time:

Literally a playbook on reducing and demeaning women using every conceivable dimension beyond looks.. race, ethnicity, age, class, etc.

I'm first-generation African (who regularly prepares fufu*, mind you) and the lines you're isolating are only marginally more offensive than the collective offense of the entire record. It's only redeeming quality is the beat.

The side dishes

And if this was the offended Olympics, someone could question why this post skips over the main marginalized/maligned group to ask about one of the song's "side jabs". Answer- bc Ppl mainly only caring/offended abt what affects them. The fufu line was no better/no worse than blk girl =angry, asian=scammer, etc so Noone singled it out.

I remember hearing it for the 1st time thinking it was kinda over the top, jokes was 80s era outdated, & wondering how would the public react

But it tries to be 'playful'
Even shot a video for it

But Jay would suffer a little consequence a few months later when ether dropped, and getting called out as "known for dissing women" kinda helped the public sentiment going against him that was tired of that shtt. If for just a brief moment

I know Jay was referencing the Eddie line from RAW but let's be honest, he only did that because he viewed it as fair game. He wouldn't reference one of the homophobic lines from Raw in his lyrics in the same way because of the hell that would come with it. Also he just might not view homosexuals that way. He had no problem with this joke because he's not that opposed to that view.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree...there is a lot to go at here in terms of misogyny but I think many of you are missing the point.

Jay, Eddie and many other AA feel comfortable going at Africans in such a way because they don't perceive African stereotypes to be attributable to them which is wrong IMO. Discrimination against black folks the world around is largely due to us originating from Africa along with all that represents.

The stereotype that Africans are poor, uncivilised, primitive, under developed, etc historically has been cultivated by our oppressors, hence, to leverage that stereotype to go at Africans, is real ignorant. Furthermore, for black people not to call it out or acknowledge it when its called out, is disrespectful to our ancestors and an abdication of responsibility to our descendants.

Yes...I am on my high horse

I could make a post about misogyny in hiphop but thats an issue that is largely acknowledged as a problem. Thats not to say it does not deserve further discourse...it does but thats not what's being addressed today

possibly conclude that hip-hop culture (at that time, or even now) was a safe space for women IN GENERAL?? The misogyny was potent and far-reaching. I feel like tearing "that" down would've helped black women more than focusing on the Black American vs. African issue.

"Girls, Girls, Girls"
(feat. Biz Markie, Slick Rick, Q-Tip)

I love girls, girls, girls, girls
Girls, I do adore
Yo put your number on this paper cause I would love to date ya
Holla at ya when I come off tour, yeah

I got this Spanish chica, she don't like me to roam
So she call me cabron plus marricon
Said she likes to cook rice so she likes me home
I'm like, "Un momento" - mami, slow up your tempo
I got this black chick, she don't know how to act
Always talkin out her neck, makin her fingers snap
She like, "Listen Jigga Man, I don't care if you rap
You better - R-E-S-P-E-C-T me"
I got this French chick that love to french kiss
She thinks she's Bo Derek, wear her hair in a twist
My, cherie amor, t£ est belle
Merci, you fine as fuck but you givin me hell
I got this indian squaw the day that I met her
Asked her what tribe she with, red dot or feather
She said all you need to know is I'm not a ho
And to get with me you better be Chief Lots-a-Dough
Now that's Spanish chick, French chick, indian and black
That's fried chicken, curry chicken, damn I'm gettin fat
Arroz con pollo, french fries and crepe
An appetitite for destruction but I scrape the plate
I love

Girls, girls, girls, girls (uh-huh)
Girls, I do adore
Yo put your number on this paper cause I would love to date ya
Holla at ya when I come off tour
I love girls, girls, girls, girls
Girls all over the globe
I come scoop you in that Coupe, sittin on deuce-zeroes
Fix your hair in the mirror, let's roll - c'mon

I got this young chick, she so immature
She like, "Why you don't buy me Reeboks no more?"
Like to show out in public, throw tantrums on the floor
Gotta toss a couple dollars, just to shut up her holla
Got a project chick, that plays her part
And if it goes down y'all that's my heart
Baby girl so thorough she been with me from the start
Hid my drugs from the NARCs, hid my guns by the parts
I got this model chick that don't cook or clean
But she dress her ass off and her walk is mean
Only thing wrong with ma she's always on the scene
God damn she's fine but she parties all the time
I get frequent flier mileage from my stewardess chick
She look right in that tight blue dress, she's thick
She gives me extra pillows and seat back love
So I had to introduce her to the Mile High Club
Now that's young chick, stewardess, project and model
That means I fly rough early, plus I know Tahoe
That means I'm new school, pop pills and stay in beef
But I never have a problem with my first class seat
I love

Girls, girls, girls, girls
Girls, I do adore
Yo put your number on this paper cause I would love to date ya
Holla at ya when I come off tour
I love girls, girls, girls, girls
Girls all over the globe
I come scoop you in that Coupe, sittin on deuce-zeroes
Fix your hair in the mirror, let's roll

I got this paranoid chick, she's scared to come to the house
A hypochondriac who says ouch before I whip it out
Got a chick from Peru, that sniff Peru
She got a cousin at customs that get shit through
Got this weedhead chick, she always catch me doin shit
Crazy girl wanna leave me but she always forgets
Got this Chinese chick, had to leave her quick'
Cause she kept bootleggin my shit - man
I got this African chick with Eddie Murphy on her skull
She like, "Jigga Man, why you treat me like animal?"
I'm like excuse me Ms. Fufu, but when I met your ass
you was dead broke and naked, and now you want half
I got this ho that after twelve million sold
Mami's a narcolyptic, always sleepin on Hov'
Gotta tie the back of her head like Deuce Bigalow

Leave your number on the cabinet
And I promise baby, I'll give you a call
Next time I'm feeling kinda horny
You can come on over

And if you can't fuck that day baby
Just lay back and open your mouth
Cause I have never met a girl
That I love in the whole wide world

Well if Kurupt gave a fuck about a bitch I'd always be broke
I'd never have no motherfucking endo to smoke
I gets loc'ed and loony
Bitch you can't do me
Do we look like BBD, you hoochie groupie
I have no love for hoes
That's something that I learned in tha Pound
So how the fuck am I supposed
To pay this ho just to lay this ho
I know the pussy's mine
So I'mma fuck a couple more times
And then I'm through with it
There's nothing else to do with it
Pass it to the homie, now you hit it
Cause she ain't nothing but a bitch to me
And y'all know that bitches ain't shit to me
I gives a fuck
Why don't y'all pay attention
Approach her with a different proposition
I'm Kurupt ho
You'll never be my only one, trick ass bitch

It ain't no fun if the homies can't have none

http://www.okayplayer.com/video/dame-dash-big-pimpin-harvey-weinstein-paid-in-full.html

but.....

like I said about "rawness" in comedy and hip-hop, people do want their entertainers to "not gaf" when they are young and the new thing.

being years past being the new thing (like Dame Dash is now...and Eddie Murphy is now....) is when people can regret in retrospect, but.....the people want raw and the entertainers are more than willing to give raw to the people

so....

I don't know when those who are young and the new thing will want to do things to "make things better for Black women/Black community etc. when the money is in being raw and reckless.

Hov's inspires emcees to this day so we're not going to act like this hiccup hurt him.

If I'm keeping it a buck the native american line was far worse and pissed me off. This version is ass compared to the second version anyways.

be offended. He went at every type of woman with every stereotype, so at the time most people aren't gonna pick out one specific type to be offended about. It's offensive to all women in general, and because of that you wouldn't see Jay doing a song like that at this point in his life. But the entire song was obvious hyperbole that wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

I mean, "Man, this song wouldn't fly today." ok, I'd get it
I mean, "Based on 444 vs GGG's, has Jay's view of women grown?" I get it.

But, 'why weren't AA's mad at the fufu line?'...weird.

Incredibly negative lyrics throughout his career that directly assail the men and women in the black community.

I suspect it's because most people really don't stand for shit, and they pick-and-choose what they will be outraged about so that it doesn't conflict with their lives. (e.g. can't be outraged about that hot song with rapey lyrics because that shit goes in the club and I like dancing to it).

he's using eddie's joke as a reference...not as a piggy back

the line doesn't piggy back any stereotype

dead broke and naked isn't necessarily primitive...the naked part is questionable at best but it doesn't really infer primitiveness...but brokeness

Reference\piggy back...either way the inference is clear to anyone paying attention

Listen to the first 10 seconds of the reference material and tell me if it doesn't suggest Africans are primitive:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts4sEBb2K3s

I think this pretty much removes any ambiguity with regards to the intent of his use of the word "naked"

so again...nah

it's a nice strong reach...if you have to look back at the reference to find the offensive part...it's reaching bc there really isn't much there in that part of the lyrics

there are other parts of the song that actually are offensive without reaching...which is a key tenet of offensive humor...offend everyone and few will be offended

unless they like reaching

So you dispute the premise of my post. I pull out a reference that CLEARLY shows you are wrong but rather than eat your humble pie, you accuse me of reaching for using said reference.
