I live in virginia so the sun isnt crazy like say cali i have a plot of land so there is no obstructions most of the time the heating and air run on the solar alone...but if its extremely hot or extremely cold then yea its splits to 60 percent grid and 40 percent solar winter months are touch and go as far as the solar goes

just out of curiosity
i haven't kept up with the tech trend of solar over time. Will it be a matter of more efficient panels/batteries being developed in 10 years and you'll have to upgrade the whole thing? or is it like a modular thing where you can just replace parts? or is it like one of those things that just works as long as you maintain it?
for example with the water heater...i have to replace one solar panel with higher efficiency ones for it to work right but all the other panels will go untouched

selling it back to the power company?

$5500 a pop, but they might recommend 2 or 3 depending on house size/appliances
they shoulda pushed more for the puerto rico offgrid fix woulda been amazing advertising, and a lot of ppl down there use solar already but im guessing the numbers didnt work out

I like that idea. And we'll have to redo our roof within a year or two so I need to start thinking about it.
a friend was selling for Solar City a while back and put a little pressure on us. I really didn't like the idea of the 15-year lease... research at that point seemed to indicate that panel efficiency is growing very quickly, and the lack of upgrade options in the contract seemed unfair.

the contract allows them 15 years of your roof, and the power generated is theirs. If you have to redo the roof or otherwise mess with it, you have to pay for the panels to come off and get put back on. Etc. And no guarantee of upgrades as technology improves.
This might be an oversimplification, but... That was all I really needed to know to get turned off. I can't even really remember how the electric rates worked. If memory serves we might have been able to save a little bit for a little while.
