My intellectual development was my dad giving me newspapers to read at age 3. So I guess that ruined me because those programs were of no interest to me

Hey none of y’all had my dad as a father so I am telling you how it was growing up with him. My structure was grow the hell up and mature fast. Hung around older people all the time... even when hanging with cats from the neighborhood. Those programs on TV just didn’t work for me.

True you have to operate in a way to give them space to explore.

During my era it was you do it regardless if you liked or not. There was no room to express what your interests were.

Thankfully my kids weren’t interested in it.

Boxing and baseball when it came to television.

I watched as much world news as I could growing up.

Watching the washed up version of Ali and the era that came in after him. Catching the Big Red Machine was the highlight of years watching TV.

That other stuff that I watched as far as kid stuff goes didn’t appeal to me. I was always reading and playing sports.

My pops had me looking at different stuff as an early age, and actually I was around 5 or 6 when I started looking at Sesame Street... so I was like what is this mess. So don’t go trippin if I thought the show was bullshit. That is what it was to me. It was something different to you so at the end of the day who cares. You took my original post to serious cuz.

My daughter loved Elmo but Big Bird always freaked her out. My son has never had a remote interest.

Thankfully, both love Super Why and Bubble Guppies and absorbed plenty of information. While watching those programs.

and she LOVES Sesame Street.

Whole fam puts our hands in when they transform. I made a birthday banner and photoshopped her into the group. Man.. that show is awesome.

she jumps on her tricycle when it starts so she can ride in when they do the intro's

Those are her 2 favorite shows.

my kid is obsessed. When we found out they cancelled the show we got all the eps on dvr and apple.

We watch at least 2 eps a night. One day I flipped out cause I realized I knew all the songs, story lines and some of the commercials.

My husband ever pointed out that kids have no idea about WD or OITNB. They know parents are forced to watch the show so they made it entertaining for both audiences.

Clever.

Yo Gabba Gabba stuck w/ my son a bit longer. Then he was on a DC/Marvel cartoon kick, then throwbacks like He-Man, Thundercats, Courageous Cat & Minute Mouse, and some old 60s and 70s joints I had on DVD. Now I don't even know what he watches anymore, I'd have to got through his Netflix history.

*my youngest is 7 so it's been a few years, but he watched far less than my older two in part because so much had been converted to CGI animated sections that simply weren't as interesting as the puppetry had been.

I thought the Street was pretty fine in the mid/late '00s though - loved some of the new monsters, and the songs and parody songs were still quite good. Wasn't as big on Abby but she was a lot better as a puppet than a CGI.

so most of those shows are a little over his head

We tried Tiger, but he didn't take to that. He has this thing about only watching cartoons where the characters are mostly people.

However, I am pissed because my husband got him hooked on American Dad and Rick and Morty. He watches it, but he doesn't know what's going on. All I can tell is that it calms him down for some reason.

And the speaker has light settings so you can really get it in.

We have a ball with that shit.

What I really like is the controls on the side let you skip or rewind to the next song. It even works with YouTube on my computer so I can skip songs. Only drawback is anytime you sync it it beeps loud as shit. So sometime when she gets distracted and we turn it off it beeps loud and she realizes she wasn’t finished playing with it.

Make it less New York-ey. More San Fran/DC/Chicago.

Abby's animated sections are misery to watch. Her voice, the jokes, everything just sucks. Elmo took over and he is just too damn much.

I love Grover and the old school muppets. I love Fozzie and anything related to The muppet sense of humor.

Kids don’t give a shit about the street set.

I agree about Abby. That Flying Fairy school was terrible. Glad they got rid of it.

Elmo is hilarious tho.. I always wondered why tickle me Elmo was so popular but now I get it. Dude is cool as shit. When he was a sore winner and kept screaming “yeeeahhhh boy” like Flavor Flav? Real tears.

Like the aesthetic is outdated. I don't have a bodega man, nor do I live in a brownstone with people of 17 nationalities and 8 disabilities.

I get that it is diverse. But there needs to be something to balance that image. That doesn't mean make it all white or all black. But just another environment. Like maybe another street called Sunflower Street and they visit each other's neighborhoods.

It doesn't matter whether its a reflection of your immediate environment. SS consolodates the world into SS so that, hopefully, kids understand that things exist that they DON'T see in their immediate bubble.

>I get that it is diverse. But there needs to be something to
>balance that image.

Why do they need to balance out diversity exactly? Sesame street represents the proverbial Great Melting Pot. To "balance out" that image is to undo the very things that make it great.

That doesn't mean make it all white or all
>black. But just another environment. Like maybe another street
>called Sunflower Street and they visit each other's
>neighborhoods.

I like the idea of visiting other neighborhoods, but not at the expense of diluting Sesame Street itself.

Why don't you want your child watching tv?

Not at all putting you on the defense but just curious as to why.

My doctor believes screen time is linked to autism. I don't, but I do let my kid watch tv.

I feel that screen time has a link to the short attention span on children which gets classified as add or adhd later in their lives. Now sometimes my son does watch tv but we really try hard to limit his screen time. It’s not easy though.

time to ourselves lol...

but yeah, the attention span thing was still a huge concern of ours. We don't let her watch live TV. Just prerecorded DVR or streaming stuff. And really...just one series at a time. Like last year or two she was all about Paw Patrol. Then somewhere late 2016 she discovered My Little Pony, so she's been on that for the past year. So it's not like she's watching a whole grip of stuff.
Basically it's been one series every year since she was about 2 1/2 years old I guess?

One thing i'll say is that I DO believe it helped tremendously with her vocabulary. She started watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse first, and that's when she really started talking. She was talking early and it's just taken off from there. I think it also really helped her understand certain concepts. In other words, if you pick the right shows, it can be educational for them.

From the brief time we tried to watch Sesame Street, I was NOT impressed. The show was all over the place, no rhyme or reason to it, and it seemed like it would contribute to the short attention span worries IMO. Also, Elmo is a HORRIBLE character. .
