"which OKP is curating the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop & Rap?"

too bad this wasn't announced in the 2002 version of the Lesson... would love to hear k_orr's thoughts.

Kickstarter link:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smithsonian/smithsonian-anthology-of-hip-hop-and-rap?ref=6k724h

Lots of thoughts about this
-bet the lead curator was an OKP esp given involvement of both 9th and ? and others
-awesome that Folkways is putting out a hip hop album at all, BUT
-it's the fucking Smithsonian, dude, why they gotta Kickstart it? kinda unintentional diss. Not like they had to kickstart the latest Ella Jenkins release (no diss to Ella).
-imcvspl, did your people in DC give you a heads up on this? Why didn't you lemme know?
-being a lover of field recordings, crazy curious to see what 9th can do with the Archives
-hoping, especially for the early days, it goes beyond commercial recordings... there was a Lesson post donkey years ago about 'hip hop field recordings' (ie old bootlegs)
-the amateur ethnomusicologist in me is geeked

and here's the email I got from Smithosonian Folkways announcing it...

The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap

“The story of hip-hop is one of great triumph, evolution, and represents the very best of black music tradition.” – Chuck D, founder of Public Enemy

Hip-Hop is a musical, cultural and social movement born in the Bronx 40 years ago. Since then, it has become a global phenomenon, influencing every corner of our lives, from fashion and art to language and politics. It has a rich history, full of incredible people and stories.

Now, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings wants to bring the incredible story of hip-hop to you, and to the world.

Creating something this ambitious is not easy – but Hip-Hop is all about the power of community. That’s where you come in.

Today we’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap and we need YOU to help bring this project to life!

In partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, we’re developing The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap, a powerful cultural statement told through an unequaled combination of sound, text, and stunning visuals.
The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap

This 9-CD, 120+ track collection and 300-page book, designed by renowned visual artist and founding creative director of Def Jam, Cey Adams, spans nearly 40 years and includes extensive track liner notes, essays by artists and scholars, and many never-before-published photographs. The anthology will be the first collection to include music from every major label as well as dozens of independent label recordings!

“We have always been passionately committed to documenting and celebrating music with strong social impact,” says Huib Schippers, Folkways director and curator. “This box set is a perfect addition to our catalog.”

When you back the project today, you’ll be among the first to get the anthology, and at production cost. You’ll also get rewards you won’t find anywhere else as a thank you for being an early supporter of this ambitious project, including a digital-only remix by DJ 9th Wonder drawn from tracks in the Folkways archives, a set of 9 Hip-Hop trading cards by artist Mike Thompson, and even a guided tour of the museum led by a curator and Questlove from The Roots!

I was expecting someone not the Smithsonian to be running this in their own name. I really just don't like Kickstart errors. And I love 15 and all that, but $10k to walk around with him in a museum that isn't about music?

Oddly enough l_d I don't think I know anyone involved. But I've been in isolation for a bit.
