"White America", "Square Dance", bits and pieces of "Sing for the Moment", and I feel like there were a few mixtape tracks/street remixes of these songs where he got more explicitly frustrated with the Bush administration, the Iraq war, and how he was subtly aware that his fans seemed to think he was endorsing those things with songs like "Till I Collapse" and "Soldier". I could be wrong, I'm no Eminem scholar, but I remember thinking that album was very liberal (or at least as much as someone who was like 14 at the time it came out could feel political about anything) and not many people agreeing with me.


if you mean the sober-not-sober comment, I just mean he was obviously on a lot of shit when he made Eminem Show/Encore, but one is a pretty good album and the other is a dumpster fire, with all the loosies he did afterward straddling a very fine line between the two if not outright becoming self-parody until his recovery.

I initially read your post to mean that he was "skewering" his own fans like he did on this cypher thing, which I don't really think is true.

But yes I agree that Eminem Show was the first time he really kind of skewered the right side of politics and the Bush admin.

but I have a vague memory of there being some bars here and there where he was audibly frustrated with this perception that because he was young, rebellious, bigoted, rich and white that he was a Republican. He didn't try all that hard but he clearly wanted to make it more of a point in his music that if he was anything politically it was straight up nihilistic yet very anti-war.

Again, you are taking it too seriously. Em is corny man. I don't think many folks in here are debating that.

In fact, I would argue anyone expecting more out of Em at this point is...weird. It isn't going to happen.

I realized this a few years ago when I was trying to convince my pops that Eminem was a good lyricist (my claim, to my father's dismay, was that he was a better lyricist than Bob Dylan). In anycase....my pops wasn't having it until I printed out lyrics on paper and gave him a small stack for him to read. He still wasn't gonna concede the Dylan point....but it certainly increased his appreciation for Eminem. He was like 'This is really good stuff. Why doesn't he just write?'. I actually thought that was a pretty good point lol.

Eminem might be the only rapper for whom a book of his lyrics might be a better reflection of his artistry than the actual recordings. I found doing this helped me convince a few old people of the quality in Nas and Tupac's lyrics too. My SO's father HATES rap music...but aside from the cuss words...he did appreciate some of Nas lyrics when I printed them out for him.
