"Why do some white rappers get a "pass"?"

First off, a good rapper is a good rapper - this is not a post about who should or should not be rapping

This is more about the idea that with some rappers who are white do not have their whiteness enter the dialogue.

AKA Invited to the cookout and there are no questions about authenticity.

Like, I've been on a mini Paul Wall kick for a second and I realized that I dont recall any talks of him "appropriating the culture" came up - I'm not saying he's doing anything that should warrant such a talk, but I wonder why he was given a pass but then someone like Iggy or Macklemore was given a hard time

maybe its just down to whos good vs. whos wack. OR maybe its down to just keeping it real. Iggy was trying to be something shes not but someone like Paull or the Beastie Boys were true to who they were.

I think I'm not explaining it well

and people hated her for her rapping voice and how it contrasted with her Aussie accent?

TO BE FAIR though, as cringeworthy as her rapping voice was...I kinda get it because I think of how many English/Irish/Scottish bands sing and perform with American accents, but, then again, there is a specific history of black face performances which...yeah thats is a layer at play with Iggy, or at least with the reactions people had with her

during the Still Tippin/Peoples Champ era
but off OKP everyone loved him

It's just a matter of skill really
Beasties/3rd Bass/El-P/Em/Paul Wall can actually rap and made good records
They all had hits (not so much Co Flow/Def Jux but they were gods in that scene) and could've easily went pop
but the audience crossed over to them

and the Beastie Boys were punk rock rap... never came off like they were mocking rap.

Iggy seems like once this ride is over she is going to take her costume off...

Macklemore only gets heat cause dude beat Kendrick at the grammy's. Never understood the hate for dude. Never listened to his music tho.. but it seemed like fun hip hop and wasn't on some fake shit.

Beastie Boys are the only one's I'm real familiar with.

were present?

how'd it go?

i can't tell you why some white ppl get a pass and others don't.

it's a feeling.

real recognize real.

it's a feeling.

Paul Wall...i mean, look. he seemed to have the right co-signs from ppl who seem like the type who would've checked him if needed. so i guess that was that.

he seem like he type who wouldn't violate at the cookout. like he might come thru w/some good brown liquor. to share. and maybe roll a couple blunts. to share. and not act funny about anything. that's good enough.

Macklemore...he has a denny problem. he thinks b/c he's checked all the right boxes on the survey that he should get love from __. and then almost gets indignant when it's not that way. he's doing too much. trying too hard. not just being himself. like he wants credit for not being racist/sexist/homophobic. as if that's something that deserves credit. you don't get credit for doing the right thing. or for not doing the wrong thing. that's like wanting credit for watching/taking care of your kids. that's what you're SUPPOSED to do. ain't nobody bigging you up for doing what you're supposed to do. he wants praise for it. he's trying too hard. nah.

fuck you.

way for us white boys. just be cool, it'll be ok.

but a lot of that is familiarity. most white people don't interact with black or otherwise really at all, so they don't even know how they're supposed to act. which is silly because you're not supposed to "act" at all. just be cool.

but shit, i probably seem more uncomfortable in all white environments at this point, especially social gatherings. shit's too uptight for me. and no, i'm not trying to score points as has been alluded to by everyone's favorite alt-right fuckboy. it's just the reality of my life, my day to day. i'm rarely in majority white environments other than my soccer league.

And here in lies a problem. You don't have to be cool, just be yourself, if you're naturally angsty/angry/a dick we'll read that an adjust to you, just be who you are. Same social rules apply as anywhere else as with black people. Don't come in peacocking unless you can take that crown from the peacock of the ground, don't disrespect the elders, and if you new to the group wait to see where someone fits you in rather than trying to get in where you feel you fit in.

and this largely applies to any group, black white or otherwise:

>Don't come in peacocking unless you can take that crown from the peacock of the ground, don't disrespect the elders, and if you new to the group wait to see where someone fits you in rather than trying to get in where you feel you fit in.

And I'm saying there's a difference.
Like when you're high and you tell yourself just be cool and nobody will know that you're high, that's how some of yall look to us, wild uncomfortable, thinking that you're hiding it, and making the situation more uncomfortable.

It's why many of us fuck with rednecks (to a degree) more than "normal" white people, because they wear whatever they got going on in the open.

But "you folks sure know how to cook" sounds wild different coming from a redneck that a squirrley white guy.

I took be cool as in to just try to play cool, but my thing is, if you're not feeling cool and and you want to play that part that makes it that much worse. Because we can see that.

b/c Madonna would be invited to the cookout.

b/c she'd be herself.

a white person doesn't need to 'feel Black' to be down at the cookout. they just need to be authentic (as in themselves) and not offensive (as in don't be on some anti-black shit).

Teena Marie might be asked to cook something for the cookout (hell, Teena's kids' grandparent/auntie/et al is probably hosting the cookout, let's be for real) whereas ain't nobody asking Madonna to bring anything but herself and maybe some weed.

fuck you.

It's OK for them to like Stone Temple Pilots and Alanis Morrisette. You don't have to know the words to the latest rap songs. Just be yourself and treat people right. It's not asking a whole lot.

its crazy, but he still gets played on pop/rock stations. can't touch hip hop radio.

I wish he could make a straight up rap album without the stadium anthem type songs. even full of lose yourself kind of tracks would be dope. it wouldn't sell like his previous albums tho.

Just get some hip hop beats. And rhyme on beat, with some rhythm. No more "you can't stop me now !" motivational speaking songs. No more raprock, trash beats. No more screaming. Just rap good on some dope beats. He doesn't need the money. Is just looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong overdue for some good music.

TBH

Timing was the issue with Iggy...

the entire industry .. black dudes included were fawning over this version of iggy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp34imC7jVE

Her whole D.R.U.G.S crew at the time was black LA dudes writing her raps and beats etc...

Southern dudes taught her how to rap.. hence the accent..

She was the first casualty in the modern cultural appropriation wars.. I don't think she was prepared to be used as a pawn by the media (her having a #1 record when Nicki wasn't as successful).. and reacted extremely poorly vs azalea and q tip..

add in some bad tweets from 18 yr old iggy and a knack for defending her grind over just shutting the fuck up...

women. She wasn't cosigned by near any big name black women, while being pitted against them professionally, and propped up by black men. That was a bad look and wasn't gonna end well. It's tough enough to be a woman rapper as it is, to have no cache with the woman community? Good luck

The last White rappers I really listened to were the Beastie Boys and 3rd Bass.

Otherwise, I ain't pay attention. There was a song or three here and there but they were nothing I was ever interested in giving a bunch of attention to.

Eminem is one White rapper I could never relate to even though he did his thing on Jay's "Renegades."

Bubba Sparxx had that one single one time a long time ago.

Yelawolf got busy on Big Boi's album a while back.

Paul Wall had a song back in the early Aughts.

El-P, as a member of RTJ, is tolerated by me but I listen mainly cuz I really dig Killer Mike. That Company Flow stuff was trash to me. Was one of the worst cassettes I'd ever purchased. There was absolutely nothing on there I could dance to. Believe it or not, people always dug being able to dance to rap music. I copped it cuz it was being pushed hard in The Source.

Ain't no knock against all White rappers cuz there may be a dope one out there somewhere. I've just not been interested. Thus, no pass given by me.

I road the bus in the heat to get that shit and 2 songs in I was so mad at myself.

that being said, Mr Len was a dope as DJ. Prolly the best party DJ I ever seen in action. One time he opened for a hip hop show and I got booed off the stage in DC when I said the show was starting in 15 minutes

in '97 or anywhere in DC during those days.

I couldn't play it on the way to the club.
I couldn't play it on the way to listen to live music at State of The Union.
I couldn't play it on the way to listen to live music at the 9:30 Club.
I couldn't get amped and hype it up to the fellas at my barbershop on MLK Ave. SE.
I just couldn't play it.

backpacker stuff as well as the shiny suit stuff.

Like I said above, rap music that makes you boogie is always where I'm at.

And at that time, you could still find backpacker stuff mixed in with shiny suit stuff on Tony Touch mixtapes or any other DJ's mixtapes.

being a backpacker while also rockin' to the shiny suit stuff.

Like I said above, rap music that makes you boogie is always where I'm at.

And at that time, you could still find backpacker stuff mixed in with shiny suit stuff on Tony Touch mixtapes or any other DJ's mixtapes.

Now that I think about it, it wasn't until '97/'98 that rap really jumped the shark enough for there to even be a true backpacker crowd. Before then, everybody was listening to stuff that was found in backpacks but also on the radio.

Either way and back to the topic at hand, NO PASSES GIVEN!

57. "For most of us who went to a HBCU, we had the diff types of White boys"
In response to Reply # 0

And I think most of us knew a few who felt like they could be a "Paul Wall," an "Eminem," or at worst, a "B-Rad."

You can ALWAYS tell the ones who are trying too hard to fit in. Some were more Paul Wall, and grew up around all Blacks, and just felt naturally Black enough for us to not question them. They didn't try too hard to defend Blacks, and it always seemed natural. Some were more Eminem, in that they were comfortable in their Whiteness, and we were cool with them although they didn't have that "natural Black" feel. This is similar to a Beastie Boy type.

Then.......those got damn B-Rads. The ones that purposely bought the Jordans and baggy jeans to fit in. The ones who were almost loud whenever someone White did something wrong, just so he could prove he was down for the cause. Always using every slang word, even mixing up slang from different regions in a confusing way.

So with artists...it's the same. A Bobby Caldwell, Teena Marie, etc etc they don't force it, and they're comfortable being White while having soul.

also, i don't really think it was his attempt to cross over. I don't imagine at any point Paul Wall was like, 'if i can get this Brooke Hogan single to take off, I'll finally be big time!'

In response to Reply # 0

There are no passes necessary. That's who he is. Houston respects him. Same with Eminem. (It doesn't hurt they they are good at what they do)

I don't see any issues with Macklemore. But someone like Iggy gets flack because it seems like they flip a switch to get into rapper mode

I have always found Alchemist's music boring and little reductive, even before I knew that he was from Beverly Hills, and never knew why he got a pass. For example, in his verse on "Hold You Down," he talks about not taking the stand, dying for his fam, and being down for the cause. Really, Alan, dying? Didn't ring genuine.
