Kylie Jenner’s Cosmetics Brand Is on Track to Become a $1 Billion Company

Kylie Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics has been buzzing since it first launched last year. Now, sales figures for the TV personality's cosmetics brand reveal just how popular her products, including those famous lip kits, have become.
In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, Jenner and her mother Kris Jenner (who is also the company's chief financial officer) provided documentation that shows Kylie Cosmetics raked in $420 million in retail sales in 18 months. Sales projections for 2017 are some $386 million, which puts the company on track to earn a billion dollars by 2022.
While Jenner launched her first product, Kylie's Lip Kits, with a limited run of 15,000 units on Nov. 30, 2015, she doesn't count those subsequent three months in her sales growth timeline, according to WWD.

The young makeup mogul may be on her way to becoming an industry powerhouse. WWD cites how it took L’Oréal’s Lancôme cosmetics brand 80 years to reach $1 billion in sales in 2015, and Estée Lauder Companies' Bobbi Brown took 25 years to hit that number in 2016.

Money, on the other hand, doesn't grow on trees.

If someone's blessed to be born to a family with wealth, I'd consider it almost criminal to not use that advantage. Sure, someone could always argue that that money should go to doing something more beneficial to a larger amount of people. But I'd argue that people should get the money first. Kylie ain't even 21 yet. Why shouldn't Kylie go full Jenner right now while she still has popularity and youth on her side?

I'm sure she's like many similarly privileged people who have convinced themselves that their 9 figure bank account exists exclusively due to their immense internal drive to succeed, fueled sweat of their own brow and that the wealth and came they were born into played absolutely no role in the opportunities they had along the way.

But this "she took the world at the cost of her soul path to success" is ridiculously melodramatic and I highly doubt you can substantiate that claim.

I'd love to start with around $100 million and think that's starting from nothing, they probably don't even think they started from nothing, dad left them a fortune and Bruce was loaded.

In their defense, they actually made a product that people want and like and didn't swindle anyone along the way. Plenty of celebs try to expand into business and fail horribly, so there's that. It's just not a business model a non-famous/non-rich person can apply to business.

I don't care that much, but Bruce spoke a lot about how much he lost as he was reckless with money, and had to build a new career on the speaking circuit. So, while agree, they weren't broke, that's fair, but Donald Trump rich? Not even close.

That's pretty wealthy. Not a guarantee of empire building/billionaire status for sure. Just a lot different than someone middle class/poor doing it.

Even if we both don't agree with how hey initially got famous. Yeah they had some money to start but what they built with it is impressive. To be famous for nothing and turning it into a business and creating other busiensses off that is not something everyone could do. People act like they are the only families with let's say $30M, who aren't turning it into what they have done. People just assume because you started with money that hard work doesn't have to go into success. Less obstacles doesn't equate instant success or even the type of success they are building. It's such a lazy mindset people have. It just comes off bitter.

For all we know her operating expenses are high as fuck and the actual money she earns isn't that number.

It's such a shock that this young Kardashian was able to leverage her brand to such an extent that it reached this high number. Actually I'm selling her circumstances short because the family started off rich and in 2015 they had a net worth over $150 million excluding their initial riches. A near $250 mill of available capital to start a business with those resources means this business was on the right track to begin with.

Yea, this is more impressive on paper in the same way Fif's Vitamin Water deal was impressive when none of us know the numbers. Not impressed and not hating but y'all hyping this up like it's a shock someone with this huge of a head start got their brand this far. Reaching $400 mill when you started with $250+ mill of available capital isn't something we should highlight as an accomplishment. You'd have a point if she started with $250K of available capital and had this turnaround.

I agree that we can't measure the actual business acumen of her or her team based on revenue alone, but that has no bearing on her ability to leverage her fame into inarguably remarkable revenue.

Even if her current profit is $0, her business is still in its infancy and $400 mil probably represents significant market share that can yield profit down the road.

It's easy to be successful when you already have the money to hire people to make decisions for you. It's the same thing with these celebs and their clothing lines, it's easy to hire a designer who can turn your abstract ideas into something concrete. The hard part is developing the product, developing a business plan, getting distribution and listings in store, etc. Kylie isn't the one doing that, she is just the face.

She pretty much just lucked up being younger than Kim. TV show been on damn near her whole life and she is the perfect age to sell shit to these kids.

Her fame is what she brings to the table, and when launching a new product consumer awareness and gaining household penetration is the most difficult factor in being successful. She removes that giant roadblock, I'd be more surprised if a kardassian product line wasn't successful. Not a guarantee of success by any means, but let's not pat rich people on the back too much for getting richer.
