"Yo 401k (or other investment vehicle) growing under Trump?"
Wed Aug-02-17 09:18 AM by Creole

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/31/us-stocks-earnings-season.html

"The Dow Jones industrial average closed at a record high on Monday as Wall Street cheered on what's been a strong earnings season."

With records like the ones being set this year, how many of y'all still mad that Trump is the POTUS? Can we set aside our feelings about all the other dumb shish he's doing to look at and appreciate that investment accounts are growing under his watch?

I get that some, if not all, of this growth is happening as a result of policies put into place by President Obama. Can one feel conflicted about the social issues that are not being adequately addressed but that his/her 401k is getting crazy returns right now?

It's Tuesday... Let's shoot the breeze!

Edit: My answers are "Yep, yup, and yes!"

Like you said, not sure if it's Trump's doing or Obama's or if it has nothing to do with who is/was President, but keep doing what you're doing, market.

Though honestly I'm sort of hoping for another crash. I was in college in 2008/2009 so couldn't take advantage of it, next time I'll actually have chips to play with.

There have been no economic or monetary changes since Obama left the white house for Trump to claim this growth in my opinion.

I also can't wait to see how Trump talks about this economy when this crash, that ever single economic forecaster says is around the corner, happens.

#11 makes it even worse that you would create this post. It's one thing to get excited about the 401k that's for retirement, but connecting that to Trump when he has only been in office for 6 months. On top of that he is attacking voting rights and access, police consent decree, civil rights and you ask, "can we set aside our feelings"

Have fun, bro!

I'm well aware of what he and his admin are doing. Just like I'm aware that he's not solely responsible for where the markets are currently positioned. I'm keenly aware that there's been a surge in the current growth of my retirement funds and that surge has occurred since this cat has been in office.

I'm supposed to deny the returns because of everything else that comes with it? If so, let's all stop investing in our futures until he's no longer president. Pass me with the judgmental BS though, fam. And get out ya feelings. As a grown ass man with a family and his family's future to be shaped, I'm playing the game the way it's designed.

Straw man, I never said deny anything. Another straw man I never said stop investing until Trump is out of office.

Practice what you preach, asking if people are still mad that Trump is POTUS, and "if can one feel conflicted" is you in your feelings.

because there's an expectation that regulations will be rolled back in the coming years. Trouble is, those regulations are there for a reason, and if all these gains just set us up for another financial crisis, then we'll be worse off. I'd rather have the slow, sustainable growth that we were having before November.

Like I mentioned above, I just hope everyone is a bit more prepared to handle another crisis if and when it hits. It was dreadful to go through that almost a decade ago. In ATL, it seemed to have hit way before it did the rest of the country. We felt it early.

still being the POTUS. And after hearing about their desire to rollback affirmative action policies in college admissions, I'm even more at a loss how this cat and his whole administration can really be this damned archaic in thought and deed.

Healthcare has been one of the largest drivers of bankruptcy is this country, none of the branches has their shit together and they're going to try tax reform with a debt crises looming just a few months from now, one in which the mere threat of us defaulting lowered our credit rating. Add that on to weak jobs growth and near zero stimulus into the economy.

And add that on to the fact THATS NOT EVEN HOW THE DOW JONES WORKS.

And scheduled for a large crash. AND that the Dow is a poor index. Add that onto to the fact that he's only been president for half a year with zero economic legislation, people should be much more worried about what that January slide back looks like rather than what June is looking like.

27. "Dow Jones - Planet Money - don't believe the hype - 2013"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2013/03/12/174139347/episode-443-dont-believe-the-hype

Another article from that year

Just a quick, cranky reminder: Despite what you may have read, the Dow Jones industrial average did not hit a new high today in any meaningful sense.

After adjusting for inflation, the Dow was higher in 2000 than it is today. It was also higher in 2007. It would need to rise another 10 percent or so to hit an all time high in real (i.e., inflation-adjusted) terms.

When reporting on other numbers that change over time, it's routine to adjust for inflation. So when people talk about wages stagnating for American households, it means that, after you adjust for inflation, the median wage is roughly the same as it was 15 years ago. If you didn't adjust for inflation, you would say the median wage has risen by more than 40 percent over the past 15 years. But that would be a meaningless statement.

It's equally meaningless for the Dow. And even if the Dow did hit a real, inflation-adjusted, all-time high, it wouldn't mean much anyway. As our colleague Adam Davidson wrote last year:

The Dow average, drawn out to two decimal places, may seem like some perfectly scientific number, but it's far from it. A small committee selects 30 big companies — I.B.M., G.E., McDonald's, Disney and so forth — and then adds up the price of their stocks. Then the analysts divide it by the Dow Divisor, a misleadingly precise-seeming number formulated to account for things like dividends and splits that right now is, well, about 0.132129493. The resulting figure is repeated throughout the country.
And those are the least of the Dow's problems. More troubling is that it ignores the overall size of companies and pays attention to only their share prices. This causes all sorts of oddities. ExxonMobil, for example, divides its value into nearly five billion lower-cost shares, while Caterpillar has around 650 million more expensive ones. Therefore ExxonMobil, one of the largest companies in history, pulls less weight on the Dow than a company less than a fifth its size.
There are other, less arbitrary indexes of the U.S. stock market, such as the S&P 500, which tracks 500 (rather than just 30) big U.S. companies. The S&P 500, for what it's worth, is below it's all-time highs in both nominal and inflation-adjusted terms.

Also look around to where I said I hope we're all in a better place when the next crisis rolls around.

These current returns could be fleeting. Could be, could be not! No one knows how it's gonna play out.

I hate the guy too but I'm not going to make that prediction based on personal feelings.

of course the market is always due for a slide because what goes up must come down but it sounds like your beef is personal.

Not what it means for an election. Just the reality of the markets as they stand right now today. There will be many many factors that'll go into the election that we can't even come close to predicting right now.

But money. That shit is old as lies.

Put as much as you can in retirement. If you aren't touching that money for decades it's guaranteed to grow. It doesn't matter if it's worth less today than it was yesterday, all that matters is that it's worth more when you start taking it out than it was when you were putting it in.

the whole problem is about the importance of money... greed is what is driving all of it.. "cash in now honey"~Perry Farrell... the guy literally told folks they need to be more paranoid... the guy brokers in the most repulsive... personally I wouldn't care how much money it makes me I could never clap along to this beat.. it's disgusting.. I get it's your retirement and in realistic and practical terms that shit might, and yeah pun intended, "trump" moral idealism... but yeah man you know the answer... if you have to ask you already know. the guilt is real. not judging you tho like some others throwing you right under the trump bus.... but by the same token don't stop yourself from checking yourself by trying to rationalize that crap.

Long term the market is one of the best investments until you are ready to retire.

no I meant only in terms of letting the performance of your investments mitigate your opinion of such an overtly offensive individual... in terms of the stock market itself.. depends on what you invest in and choose to make money off of...

as for stashing it in the mattress.. i prefer burying it in the woods... I've also witnessed enough crashes to give me pause... realize once you no longer have the cash in hand it's in play or gone... might as well be poker.

if a 401k iss a loooong term investment vehicle why get excited about a temporary up?

The market is going to fluctuate no matter what.

all that matters is to keep feeding the account, keep buying, keep dollar cost averaging all while staying in ETFs - pure equities is a hard and long game most folks are not cut out for and most of us do not have the real firepower needed to reap gains that would make Bernie Madoff weep (also, stay away from options, just...are you Gordon Gecko?)

In response to Reply # 0

If this continues, I am retiring from my job at 50. I have a 26 percent increase. If those interest rates even come down to 7% , I will be a millionaire by 50 and I am 42. I don't make a lot of money and I don't have a business. Just a regular investor.

I have been investing since I was 25. I put a total of $200k away over 18 years with company matches and maxing out my roth ira and my employment pension.

All I can say is now is the time to capitalize off of the stock market or real estate. The housing shortage is real. My condo building in an "emerging neighborhood" is rarely vacant. People cannot find affordable housing and that is driving up the stock market. Very sad but an inverse effect of supply vs. demand.

When housing gets more affordable, the market will mellow out.

This thing is steady humming along. Up about 50% (annualized) since election day.

It's crazy that with all of this economic crisis, the stock market is riding high.

I assume eventually it's going to come back down to reality. A cold reality. But I'm not going to try to guess when. I'll keep riding the ups and downs.

I wish I just dumped it all in at that moment rather than spreading it out with more buys every month, but I was still concerned we hadn't seen the final COVID related drop. Like, what kind of a recession lasts 4 weeks???

Happy with the gains so far, for too long I wasn't doing shit with my money (sans 401Ks/IRAs) so it's nice to see it grow rather than collect dust in a savings account.

EDIT: Just went back and re-read my first reply to this post and glad I followed through haha:

"Though honestly I'm sort of hoping for another crash. I was in college in 2008/2009 so couldn't take advantage of it, next time I'll actually have chips to play with."
