"Having White Friends Comes w/Trauma I Dont Want anymore (swipe)"

http://afropunk.com/2017/07/white-friends-comes-trauma-im-not-willing-deal-anymore/

I can’t take no ‘mo, White People.

I can’t answer any White People demanding an explanation for why something is “racist”. I can’t take anymore White People sending me videos of Black People being murdered without thinking of how it will affect me. I can’t sit through any more arguments for why race “isn’t always a factor”. And I can’t keep ignoring the cowardice silence when it’s time for White People to confront each other about race.

My dad warned me about White People when I was around 7 or 8. He told me that no matter how close I felt to these people, I would always be first and foremost Black in their mind. And at no time could a Black person rely on a White person to put their privilege on the side if it ever becomes a Me vs. Them situation. As a kid, this was, frankly, another one of my dad’s pessimistic, paranoid lectures. Be on the lookout at all times just…in case. And as an outgoing, compassionate human-being his words rolled off my back. But in time I’ve learned that Daddy-o was onto something and the ugly truth is that in one way or another, White friends, largely, just aren’t safe to have.

I really learned this lesson with White Moms. They stunned me the most. Women who have known me through adolescence, fed me and looked out for me at times, let out lashes of vapor that scared me. These maternal figures have always welcomed me into their homes, embraced me warmly, and made me feel part of their limited restriction “we’d rather you do it in the house” households. The privilege of light skin, perhaps, caused me to appear less threatening to them and a respectable dose of home training meant that these experiences with white families seemed pleasant.

These immersions into white vacuums, places where I shrunk as to not take up too much white space, doing so with an unrealized desperation to re-affirm my normality. As if sharing a meal, sleeping in White folks sheets meant that I wasn’t inherently unsavory, despite the re-enforcements from the outside world.

The first of these times, I was visiting my best friend from middle school. My second trip home in Southern California after moving to Atlanta. My friend, her mom, and were chatting in the kitchen. I had already sent my own mother an SOS text to pick me up. We talked about my new life, how I was adjusting so far from the beach, and whether or not I had found a boyfriend down there. And when I said no to the last, her mother leaned across the table and grabbed my forearm reassuringly and said, “At least now you can meet someone of your own kind.”

It was like a punch in the face. But it was hardly the last time a White elder tried to put me in my place. But it was the first time I allowed myself to acknowledge the malice being spewed at me by a White person I trusted.

With every close relationship I’ve had with a White person, their unconscious but blatant biases against and misunderstandings of Black People, in particular, tends to reveal itself sooner or later. Unprompted and accepting admissions that their Good White parents aren’t racist but would never “let” them date a black person, the tokenizing, the microaggressions, and dismissals of Black pain. The emotional labor, the holding back, the shrinking required to put up with the willful ignorance and mismanaged guilt and resentment of White People is too much.

And the fact of the matter is that I’m finding it impossible to trust any White Person to not, at some point, perpetuate ideologies that oppress me. Being friends with White People is just too fucking hard on my psyche.

Funny thing is my pops gave me the same sort of lessons, I took them to heart, so I've never been surprised or let down by a white person like this author is describing.

These kids need to toughen up. Old Man Gripe done.

Of course Black people have "unique"
issues. We're an oppressed people who are
socialized to hate ourselves and our own.
Not really an apt response to the issue
of dealing with an oppressor group.

or Democrat and Republican, etc.

my point being of course the majority of "friends" you have from a conflicting culture will often come with negatives and to the extent that true "friendships" of that nature are or will be few and far between

conversely if you focus entirely on your own cultural group for building true friendships you will have to deal with whatever unique issues that group has to whatever degree. The more friends you try and make the more you will have to work with those issues.

In the end it just seems like a moot point and not really that deep.

You live in a country with a foreign/outside culture. Learn/understand it or don't.

didn't Malcolm X say we as people like to cut each other? If you're that person that finds offense at talking about the issues that pertain to you and your culture I don't know what to tell you.

Doesn't Neely Fuller Jr state that when black people congregate we should do so with the sole purpose of discussing business related to our culture and nothing else due the amount of toxicity in our own community? Is he using "what about black on black crime" speak?

Feels are not welcome here

or what seemed like such at first. The article ends on a note that easily gives the reader the impression that the author believes the grass to be greener on the other side. That is what my comment is addressing

I would have liked to have seen something extolling the benefits of black friendships and or offering ways in which black people can enrich or develop more of them (friendships) that are healthy and not toxic which is an obstacle present in our community.

To just write white friendships are a problem for me and not state how you will or intend to solve that problem is kind of sloppy imo.

justify your response.

Her talking about how to heal Black relationships
would be cool if that's what she wanted to do.
It's also cool if she just wants to talk about
being tired of trying to befriend white folks.

That you would have written the piece differently
doesn't mean something's wrong with it.

Perhaps friendships with Black people are much
easier for her. With that said...
Are you having trouble maintaining friendships
with Black people, specifically? What are the
"unique" issues you're running into with them?

Nothing wrong with a white people are bad post I guess, it's her blog or whatever so she can write what she wants I'm just over people writing about the issues they can't change and when it comes to us I'm like "where can I read about the things we CAN change?"

I'm assuming other black people will read the article and I think it's not entirely productive to rally troops around the "bad white people" banner without adding something positive for the reader. Just seems a little pity party like or misery loving company.

No I'm not and as far as unique issues go I don't see a need to re-iterate what I already did in my reference to overall issues presented by men like Neely fuller and Malcolm X. In my own experiences I relate more to Neely than Malcolm.

Friends for me are like my words -- few and wisely chosen (when I'm not on this board)

you're just as guilty here. Why not comment
there and share those works if you think they
need to be a part of the conversation?

Ok, then there's no issue for you.

>and as far as unique issues go if you need me to
>iterate that I already did in my reference to overall issue
>presented by men like Neely fuller and Malcolm X.

Very familiar with them both (but you know this, because
I recommended you buy Fuller's book when you were only
watching his youtube videos). I was asking you about
your own personal experience. But you say you aren't
having issues, so that doesn't seem to matter.

Not sure how folks can hard Nbomb other folks with the hard R and talk mad shit about abusing them and wishing to see them abused and not a word is said

meanwhile trying to address the impetus for such behavior draws a backlash

fascinating

Because based solely on your posting, you ostracize other Black people constantly. How are folks supposed to unify with the other side when they often don't believe you have their best interests in mind nor even an understanding of them.

I don't know man, the only thing you seem to consistently unify is people against your opinions.

You and a few others keep making this an all friends issue,
even though its common experience in the OKP population to have
a tight circle cause humans in general, no matter what race or group, can be awful.

Willfully ignoring the social ramifications of a white supremacist society for no other reason to point out a near universal experience in human relations seems purposely obtuse when otherwise you're rah-rah anti-racism. Gives me millenial hotep vibes. Maybe you're just in a mood. I will let this slide.

I'm saying (the author and black people in America in general) should ignore the supremacists that masquerade as friends (i.e. most or many white people) and seek out good people / friends wherever they can

Gives me millenial

breh wanted the DD to drive like 30 mins across town to cookout, when theres a cookout 5 mins away cause he thought it was the ghetto. he thought we were gonna get robbed and shot

and i let it rock the first time "it's not the ghetto man i basically grew up over here. where do you think i get my haircut."

said it a 2nd time
"breh you're my guy but you don't want to go down this road w/ me for real. quit playing"

a 3rd time and i lost it (i was wasted)
"i hope you DO get shot out here. i hope this place lives up to your idea of the ghetto. you want to see the hood i'll take you to one, drop you off and you won't survive you spoiled pussy. you say that shit one more time and i'll make it so that you wont eat. my grandma lived over here. i know everybody over here. you'll never be safer anywhere than you are here w/ me right now"

pindrop silence in the car

this other chick in the car comes out like "hey you might want to chill with calling it the ghetto. that's very offensive"

breh aint say shit the rest of the night but he apologized the next day.

edit: aight im reading the article and it sounds like this girl is a placater. you gotta be unabashedly black w/ white folks. the ones that still fuck w/ you are the real ones. trying to hard to fit in with white people shit and subjugate your blackness will mindfuck you.

>cuz, most of them really don't know

Once I stopped giving people passes for "not knowing" basic shit (like fairness, equality, etc.) a lot of confusion went away.

They know. They just don't *want* to know.

Not snark, but rather I didn't really have any white people as peers until college, which meant no white friends. By that point, there were no surprises.

I agree with B_G above about this being "snowflake-y"

That's something people usually can't
admit. Until they're no longer in the
situation. We as Black people are
notorious for this, due to our social
ostracism. You can look around and see it
in every "class."

I actually have a similar experience of
receiving the talk as a child and
disregarding it. I learned the hard way.

The only thing I'd have said differently
is I'd have thanked the parents for not
"letting" them date a Black person.
I know "equality" only amounts to
interracial sex and marriage for alotta
people claiming to be "woke," but that's
completely backwards.

I got lost in a store once and was running around
looking for my parents. 2 white women stopped and
asked me if I was lost, told them yeah. They let
me pick out an action figure and took me to the
register. I see my mom and older brother there
checking out and they see me. The look on the
white women's faces was like they saw a 10 ft spider.
I'm just sitting there in the cart confused like
"so I'm gettin this GI Joe or what?" not realizing
I coulda been about to get kidnapped. I had to be
no older than 3 or 4.
I think I blocked the rest of this story out due to
my mom's rage lol.

thats interesting. i dont think i ever had a choice but to regard it. i always played travel ball soccer which is basically for rich kids but my parents could afford it. and i got along great with 90% of them. still friends w/ many of them to this day although we dont see each other much since we're all over the world.

but i always found it interesting i only got invited to certain teammates houses when they'd do shit outside the team. like damn you can cheer for me cause i ball out but i cant come kick it at your house? hmmm...

Word, you saw it early.
The town I grew up in was pretty segregated, so
I got older and moved to a more "liberal" place,
thinking racism and segregation wouldn't be such
a thing there. All I found was that white people
were still racist but much slicker and better at
pretending not to be. I have a gang of stories
that illustrate it, but yeah.
Initially when I got the talk as a child, I just
thought "man these old people just stuck in the
past" or whatever stuff young people still say today.
Thought it was just my lil racist town.

most/many can't be befriended without trading in some aspect of your self love. So forget them.

on the other hand if you solely focus on making black friends you have to deal with colorism, jealousy, envy, false senses of self, and other issues that can also take a toll.

You've decided I am of a certain mind about things and you're pretty far off from the truth.

But, you do you, man.

"Walk a mile in my shoes", etc.

But, from reading this article, this person seems otherwise pretty well adjusted and is overstating the damage for clicks.

Don't listen to me, though. I hate everyone equally (self included). Plus, I'm medically diagnosed with many mental health disorders, so I am a classic unreliable narrator.

This is the crux/crucial. Yes, being wary and segregated is somewhat a survival factor (for well being, emotions, and sometimes ones life yes) but cant live like that 24-7. And being so is missing out on part of human experience, we all deserve to have..and should.

& i think the article speaks to the psyche of many minority groups in this country.

not that voting for trump makes one inherently a terrible person.

to some degree, i get that voting for this failed abortion of a man was the white man's fuck you to the elite.

but the blatant disregard, apathy, indifference, obliviousness or whatever the-fuck that HAD to go into casting that vote, frankly, it makes you wanna say fuck ALL of 'em.

shit's tough. well, not THAT tough. but tossing a whole person aside is tough - esp for black folks. or at least for me.

I thought me and dude were cool until my team beat his team in soccer or football at recess and he called me a nigger.

nah.. that was my wake up call.

I think folks who lived in that progressive bubble in East and West coast cities were the only ones shocked white folk could vote for him in those numbers.

I'm from Western PA tho and spent half my life in the south. I'm actually surprised more Black folk didn't see it as a possibility.

I'm so far removed from having anything even remotely to do with someone's race cross my mind that I saw the word "trauma" and went into my own life. In my experiences, someone making awkward and rude comments in an otherwise non-hostile, non-violent social setting isn't something traumatic. Something to take issue with and be offended by, most likely. But, just comparing with some of the events that I've gone through in my life, doesn't merit the word "trauma."

We only have one set of lenses, after all.

I've gotten to a point within my own self that I've developed a pretty thick layer of cynicism. It can come across as rude or out of line, but it really does just stem from my own sense of self-worth (or lack thereof).

And that you can know someone's true intentions through those means.

The big question is: why are you wasting your time on (very obviously, without any question whatsoever) racist morons like me? This is a highly sought after power, man. We have a corrupt super villain in the whitehouse right now and you're out here on the internet trying to take down a suicidal manic depressive. Far be it from me to tell another man how to live his life, but your priorities seem a little out of balance.

And the crazy part is: you're not even the only one with this capability on this message board. Fuckin' amazing. What are the probabilities of that?

I mean, really. God fucking dammit, that's impressive.

Many white people seem want to consistently be recognized as individuals, while denying that the social group they belong to brings them anything.

You see this a lot with "affirmative action" or slavery. Why should "you" get x when I worked hard and didn't get z. Or "my" ancestors never owned slaves, yada yada.

It's a very human way to look at things, but also supremely myopic.

So in this case we someone demanding your recognize their trauma at the expense of others, he'll interject it in every interaction until you do, doesn't matter that it's off topic, that one has to deny their own internal reflection on an article ... no recognize above all else that he alone knows what trauma is and you should not give the author any empathy or sympathy, only him.

Seems like a bottomless pit of need. Hope he gets the help that he seems to be screaming for.

Don't worry about me, though. You've already read my mind, so you know there's no malicious intent there, except for the whole me being inherently racist, because OF COURSE I AM I'M WHITE HEEELLLLLOOOOOO???? I couldn't possibly have my own post-traumatic stress mental health conditions that cause me to view the world in a non-standard, messed-up way. But you know that, because you read minds. Which is awesome.

Makes me think of this one night at work, closing up the store. We have single user public restrooms. At five till closing, one of the managers walks the store, reminds everyone still browsing that we're closing and checks the fitting rooms and restrooms. When it comes to the fitting rooms and restrooms, we knock and say something like, "If this is occupied, please finish up as we are closing in five minutes" or something like that. I was closing down registers, so my closing assistant manager was the one doing the walk around. He is Mexican. Few minutes pass, he comes up to the register and lets me know there's a few people still browsing and one of the restrooms is occupied; just giving me a status update, standard procedure. Few minutes later, customer (who also happens to be Mexican) approaches the register, has a few items set down on the counter and says, "Hey, I just wanted to let you guys know, you lost a sale tonight because you were giving me a hard time about being in the bathroom a few minutes ago." I'm confused, so I say, "I'm sorry? What happened?" Him: "Well, I didn't like the way you told me to get out of the bathroom and, you know, me being Mexican. . . I don't know, that doesn't look good for you guys because you were singling me out because of that."

Now, you already know what's wrong with this picture.

1) How the HELL are we supposed to see through a goddamned locked door and know you are who you are?

2) The guy who talked to you IS THE SAME AS YOU.

3) Vacating the store at closing time is *literally* his job.

But, somehow, this guy was absolutely sure he had been the target of some sort of racially motivated something and I was obviously the one who had carried it out because of who I am.

Continue reading minds. You're very good at it.

(Also, the whole idea of you saying that I need to get the help that I need and trying to be "the good guy" is pretty scumbaggy and goes to show that you have your own prejudices about people with mental health issues. And, yes, maybe those ideas are there because of how people in my condition have been ostracized and misunderstood throughout most of modern history. It's not your fault. I take my medications. I go to my sessions. Thanks for your concern, but we're not all just lunatics, walking down the street barefoot and screaming at the sky. But, even if I was that sick, your concern still wouldn't be genuine. Most likely, you'd avoid me altogether. So, probably best to keep that to yourself.)

The way you guys jump at the smallest little inkling of something even quasi-racial, and then proceed to dogpile on it, is really something to behold.

Talk about me "not getting it" but then turn around and act like you know everything about everyone.

That must be really nice

All of this just means this isn't something
you understand. I've also experience some
really violent abuse in my life. That's
not comparable to racial abuse from ppl
you call 'friends' (or family/lovers in some
cases) tho. Not better or worse, just completely
different, and by your own admission, you don't
even have to think about such things, so your
comments really are invalid on the subject.

And tell me I'm not valid, or whatever.

But the bottom line is: what I've gone through and have had to reconcile and accept, and have ultimately been told is "traumatic", is very far removed from someone speaking in mildly racist overtones in an otherwise safe environment.

The sleepovers, parties, staying for dinner, etc. It can all give the impression and or illusion that they are like their friends. This can go on for years but at a certain point that view can be shattered by something like what the author stated -- a left field comment like "your own kind" and up until that point said person thought they were of the same kind -- world shattered.

Once is enough but if it's one experience or many the result will in time be or tend to be traumatic. Like never staying at a white persons house for dinner or if you go to a white persons house and things look off i.e. smashed window and open door you may just turn around and go home or if you see a white person have a bad car accident you may just keep driving rather than revisit some event where your good intentions were misunderstood due to race.

Do you write all these OKP grudges down ? If you've held on to this for nearly 2 months I imagine there's a lot of veeeeery trivial things that bother you. Gotta be tough to keep track of it all.

Indeed. You said my name. I asked for an explanation as to why you said my name. You gave a poor explanation.

Sure did. Not sure what you're digging at here. I breeze through posts a lot of the time so I tend to assume that the folks engaged in the current back and forth were the same folks always engaged in the back and forth. You asked for an apology, I gave you one ... while simultaneously laughing at the fact that you were stewing over something like this for 2 months.

Over a parking space huh. Can you read ? The dude keyed my car to the tune of a $1,000 repair. Not exactly "trivial." Pretty terrible analogy, on your part. But not surprising at this point I suppose.

If it was just a misread you wouldn't mention the reply number and quote the message plus if read close enough to do that you could see the names are different. I'm laughing more at the fact you asked what you did.

What 1000 dollars, well that means you called the police, confronted the guy, or sued him right ? If it's that bad I know you didn't come to a message board and ask for juvenile ways to get even.

Ironic that you'd criticize me misidentifying one piece of a quoted post considering that you incorrectly referenced the situation with my car just two posts ago. Guess you're not as perfect as you think you are.

Did not call police. There's nothing they could do without solid evidence. Did not confront him. Sue him ? Jesus. Do you live in the world ?

And yes, I definitely did ask for juvenile ways to get even. It turned into a pretty hilarious post, which was kinda my intention.

I live in the world where adults do something or let it go altogether but still going on about it almost two years later when you didn't even confront someone who did 1000 dollars worth of damage.

If someone accused you of something but didn't specify, you wouldn't care or be curious what they were talking about ?! Judging by the time you're spending on this I imagine you would be curious and in fact talk in circles about it endlessly.

>The parking space had nothing to do with it ? Did I quote you

I mean, what bro. Yes the dude loved his parking space. I had no connection to it. It was his beef, not mine. It only became my beef after he keyed my car. So you at best mischaracterized the situation completely in a failed attempt at an analogy.

>If you are the person no but if it's someone else.

Like is that supposed to be a diss of some sort ? I wouldn't accuse you of anything cause I don't know you. And even if you had mistaken me for someone else on a message board I'd have forgotten about it and you w/in an hour.

>You said someone keyed your car and the guy who you think did
>it is anal about his parking space.

You have a lot of trouble with nuanced language, don't you.

>Damn you never been in a fight in your life ? This is not
>hilarious it's.... you keep taking a L over and over.

I have no idea what this means either.

>What you want to move away and then do something ?

What happened to you going to read the whole post ?

If it were up to me, I'd have done something already. As it is, my wife is up in arms about "we have to live here remember !" and made me swear not to do anything at least til we're out of the neighborhood. So I'm playing the long game to keep a happy home.

Or if this is more radical or more conservative than how most black people view their relationship with white folks.

>i would want that fantasy for them too and I see now how
>difficult that would be.

I was watching this documentary on netflix the house on coco road and it tells the story of this family who started as sharecroppers in Louisana, the children migrated to Los Angeles and the mother became and activist working with Angela Davis. In the documentary I heard the familiar story of the mother saying her parents would shield her from segregated public places by only stopping for gas and packing their own food on long trips. Then that shit made sense of why my mom from Louisana was always into packing food and not making many stops on long road trips.

My mom would also tell the story of not being so conscious of segregation because it wasn't like they were going to public establishments that had seperate entrances and whites only counters because they simply always went to black establishments. She said it was only when they started protesting lunch counters in her college days did she really ever venture ito places with whites only counters.

All that to say, If our parents and we had the fantasy, our kids can have the fantasy if we want to give it to them.

imjustsayin.

I was raised on 3 liberal college campuses. I spent several years in student housing surrounded by hundreds of families from all over the world all of whom had kids around my age. There were no class differences bc we all had the same type of apartments. Well, I guess maybe there was bc one of my friends had parents who offered powdered milk. But when it came to other obvious class markers I was kinda insulated from that. And even race - we knew we were different but no one said that meant any of us were better than the others. It was remarkably socialist. Lol. Also, I attended a well funded public school. And was a star but no one made a big deal out of it.

I dunno where I would find that. I only had it bc mom was in school - back when it was cheaper. A wonderful socialist liberal bubble.

fuck you.

The black experience project:

http://www.environicsinstitute.org/institute-projects/current-projects/black-experience-greater-toronto

Phase One overview handbook:

http://www.environicsinstitute.org/uploads/institute-projects/black%20experience%20project%20gta%20-%20phase%201%20final%20report.pdf

I have a million problems with their methodology and we have to keep in mind it's a Toronto study so almost the entire sample group are of west-indian and to a lesser extent, African heritage. Meaning....not descendants of American slaves. But I'd contend alot of the findings are a product of western critical race theory creeping into social media platforms, social discourse and media. I'd argue exposure to these new trends in ideology are more relevant than historical commonalities or shared ancestral experiences.

In anycase...one of the main findings is that black people between the ages of 18 and 30 responded much stronger to the existence of racism in society than those in older demographics. In anycase....there's ALOT of analysis here and it's worth a read.

Edit: I posted the wrong link. Here's the full overview upon the study's completion and the bulk of the work done:

I'm a fan of the man. I'm a supporter. It does not look good for a website that he founded to have a message board that allows this kind of behavior.

I suggest you read this post: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=4&topic_id=13176797&mesg_id=13176797&page=#13177414

Because it's relevant to the sort of "judging a book by its cover" hysterics that is happening here.

When a person of color speaks about their experience in dealing with whiteness/white culture and the stress it involves, you have stepped out of your lane immediately when you try to invalidate it or correct it.

your first reply to this post was to correct the title of the article.

no.

fuck that.

you need to fall the fuck back and shut up when I or anyone else of color complains about what its like being born and raised in this racist fucking country
