"What's the policy on social media credits/shoutouts and the like?"
To promote my upcoming book I opened an IG (@thecipherbook_miami) posting pics from back then and book-related stuff
So today for #tbt I posted an unreleased pic from the night I interviewed Phife (in 98, around when ATCQ broke up) tagged and shouted out those in the pic with me
One of these (who was my man back then but like Nas said "best friends become strangers") Takes the pic and tweets it to his +7k followers no shoutout, no credit, no mention of my book, nothing
My first impulse was to DM him asking WTF? but I fell back (I didn't DM him)
Thinking on it some more yeah let him get his shine, whatever I'm updating my db and keeping all receipts
The other person in the pic DMs me "yo dope pic, thanks for posting"
I mean, that's the social media age now once it's posted, it's out of our hands But I still feel a way

i've started putting @wrecknoble watermarks in my IG photography for concerts, because I am starting to get some exclusive shots of artists
i know the artists themselves may not shout me out if they repost a picture of themselves (which i feel they have the right to do), but at least my watermark is there
today was the first instance where a photo I posted of a local artist ended up getting used by a college radio show to promo their interview with this artist. they didn't tag me on IG or anything, but my watermark is clearly visible in the bottom right corner

(this is all in response to you question about what recourse you have)
pretty much all platforms have a place to submit a misuse complaint
that said its up to them to determine if there is a violation (i didn't see you claim that he is saying your ex-friend took the pic or that it belongs to him)
the SHORTEST path seems to be simply telling the re-poster to change his posting to give you credit as owner of the pic in question
