Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has died aged 89, his family has announced.

He played the famous spy in seven Bond films including Live and Let Die and the Spy Who Loved Me.

Sir Roger's family confirmed the news on Twitter, saying he had died after "a short but brave battle with cancer".

The statement, from his children, read: "Thank you Pops for being you, and being so very special to so many people."

Sir Roger There will be a private funeral in Monaco, they added.

He always had a more childish/lighthearted take on the character and that made the series easier to love as a kid.

I can't imagine a 5 year old watching Daniel Craig beat someone to death with a sink getting that same kind of love (although as a adult, awesome!)

is purely a generational thing. Roger Moore is probably my favorite Bond mainly because his James Bond was the first one I was exposed to via those old school ABC viewings of his flicks.

If I were older, the popular choice of Sean Connery would probably be the James Bond I'd favor.

My old man liked Connery. I always picked Moore. And folks younger than me tend to prefer Craig.

His Bond's schoolboy womanizing looks dated now. He didn't have the gravitas of Connery or the gangsta of Daniel Craig, but his wit and humor made him arguably the most fun to watch.

Oh, and Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Lazenby? Keep it moving.
