"Why is Brunch the thing to do now? "
Mon Apr-24-17 02:42 PM by Case_One

Like, there are more Bunch only places popping up everyday in the A. Like any an every little shake, warehouse space, and old house it turning into a Brunch Spot. Is the same thing happening in your city.

Prolly cuz less people are going to church. Restaurateurs see it as an opportunity to take advantage of the market consisting of those folks who are not running to church every Sunday. Aside from that, I think it's just a strong trend due to the fact that folks prefer less casual dining options all the time and at every hour now.

eggs, bacon, chicken and waffles are inexpensive to prepare, just like those bottomless rail mimosas and bloody marys. prixe fixe the menu, and everyone feels like they made out...even when the bill needs to be split among those large groups.

and the only served breakfast and closed at 2PM.

I thought it was a genius idea. sure you have to be up at the crack of dawn but by 2PM it's over.

Plus, pancakes and eggs are cheap as fuck.

as far as "doing brunch".. it's affordable (well, it should be)

it's something you don't have to get up early to do and breakfast is a good ass meal to talk about your adventures last night.

a bill. My lady treated me recently to brunch at The Four Seasons in Georgetown. I looked at the bill when she was signing it. My face dropped. At the same time, the food (and quality thereof) was not the same as hitting the Shoney's or Denny's. Copious amounts of seafood, fresh grilled fish (red snapper), pastries, and all the other stuff was just on a whole other level of umm-umm-ummm.

One of our favorite a la carte spots here in B'more has the best lobster hash and French toast (Shit's graham cracker crusted, B!). And the damned Crush's (orange, strawberry, John Daly, etc.) are ridiculous too. I never walk outta there with a check less than $100. It's prolly because of the likka. And that's usually for two people.

I like good food, great atmosphere, and excellent dining options but that brunch had me shook. And being the sexist that I am, I offered to pay for it which offended her feminist sensibilities. LOL

Sheeeit! I looked away and then looked back at her before saying... "I'll fill up your tank on the way back."

The drinks aside from the free mimosa and/or bellinis. Depending on my mood, I might start knocking back Vodka Collinses, cognacs, etc. Some days, it might just be water with lemon.

we have a spot out here called Mo's Egg House. Really small spot but damn they flip tables every day like crazy. From 6am-2:30pm. They are cheap, have insane proportions, and are really good. If you want breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday be prepared to wait 45 minutes for a table. But its crazy that this tiny tiny place has such good and fresh food while these chain restaurants cant get their shit together. Whenever I go I get this seafood lobster. Lobster and REAL crab in every bite. Also topped with hollandaise sauce. Throw in the toast and homestyle potato's all for $12. SHIT cant beat that anywhere.

November 8th, 2005 The greatest night in the history of GD!

Now that my daughter will be going to Howard, I'll have even more excuses to dip down there for good food and fine likkas.

I liked the Foundingn Farmers in NoVa and MoCo. Never hit the one in DC. And the FFB, in Georgetown, is groovy too. Sits right on the water down there. I dig it. You guys should too.

Edit:
I'm gonna take my lady to the place you recommended also.

Breakfast is still good at the DC and MoCo locations, but the NoVa location is the only one with a proper brunch.

In my experience, Brunch spots are full of dudes who don't own gym shoes, and only hang out in groups to impress each other.

Rather cook in my kitchen, eat in the dining room, porch or patio. Can smoke, drink, watch TV, surf the web, got a sound system w/ mad bass, etc.

Not sure how y'all not understanding that waking up early on a Sunday to shower and get all gussied-up (to look fly) to go out to eat is some extra stuff.

As someone who's worked brunch for the better part of five years now, I hate what's become the stereotypical brunch crowd. Luckily I now work at a place that's primarily thought of as date night or anniversary night or celebration night, so our brunch crowd is mostly people who always want to walk in but feel most casual on a Sunday afternoon, plus a lot of the bartenders from the area drinking and swapping weekend tales.

That's a good crowd. But the neon frat boy and sorority sister crowd that makes up what I've come to understand as "normal" brunch? Nah. They suck, it's just a commodified excuse to get stupid earlier in the day than usual and take your friend's girl.

I heard about one in NYC but never made it... basic premise was that after 2pm, a DJ would start playing music, the window blinds would be drawn and a couple tables would get pulled away to make a dance floor.

it was usually because menudo was served on Sunday's only. But we would go out once a month and hit the spot that had brunch. Fill up on huevos rancheros, taco's, menudo, omelette's, and of course rice and beans. Mom would have her champagne.

It's cute that brunch is just now becoming a 'thing'. It's as much a 'thing' as dinner. Or snacks. It's part of life. But I'm gay - my ppl have done this thing since I can remember.

i love a big breakfast on a weekend
but when you sleep in and wake up hungry, prepping a four course breakfast is the last thing on your mind.

also as we get older and deeper in our chosen lives, it seems there is much less time to catch up with friends face to face.

what if there was a way to grab a delicious breakfast and catch up with your people?

in comes the brunch spot to the rescue.

everybody has time for brunch.

1. It's not brunch b4 11.

2. Who eats brunch b4 noon? (Answer: ppl with kids who bring kids to brunch)

3. Don't bring kids.

4. Yes, have some drinks.

5. Consider not driving. Bc #4.

6. Eat something sweet and something savory.

7. Expect to split an entree with at least one other person. And order at least one for yourself. (So if you want the crab cake Benedict and some pancakes see if your homie/date will split the pancakes with you)

8. It's going to cost more than you expect. Bc #7. And #4.

9. Expect to leave at like 2 or 3.

10. Do not wait more than 20 or 30 minutes for a table. It's not worth it. That joint should take reservations. Fuck that. It can't be THAT good.

11. Do not post about it on social media. Anyone who cares is lame. Don't be that person.

Everything about that query implies that the person posing the question believes it's a new phenomena/trend. The word "now" at the end is what puts it there.

it's like a black subculture in and of itself now

i.e. https://twitter.com/Brunchnoir

I've worked Sundays for the past 2 years so I almost never do brunch. but it still isnt something I would *have* to do short of birthday celebrations because the persona isnt within me

I made a joke that black people are getting passports now because everyone can afford to do brunch

Bourgie negroes have been brunchin as long as I've been aware of dining. I've been around (at the very least) pseudo-bourgie negroes my entire life and uber-bourgie negroes about the past 20 yrs or so. The brunch subculture has always been there.

The social media aspect of it, of course, is new. And I suspect there are lots of young black folks that are newly exposed due to a recent economic boost... they got a job.

been around. I don't think anyone is debating that. Not even Case.

My reply was more trying to poke fun at the deep south for seemingly just now getting in on the TREND.
I noticed it being a trend up here in the DMV several years ago.

Case is not wrong, it very much IS the "in-thing" to do as of late. Just my late is the past 4-5years...whereas Case's late seems to be the past year or so.

Just seemed like something church folk would do after service let out.

Maybe not the trendy, go-and-get-dressed-up-to-socialize-and-IG-everything brand of brunch we have now, but just the concept.

But I don't recall having the option for breakfast items though. It was all just straight dinner food. And no alcohol of course.

True true. It was only a Sunday thing too. Now it's a Friday - Sunday phenomenon.

held by an old school muralist who's a new friend who just returned from Brazil, and his dj homies were in LA from the bay and were spinning 45 reggae joints in his big ass backyard with hella guests. best brunch in a minute. reminds me hosting them with dope friends and friend of friends bringing food can be way better than rolling out, waiting an hour + hung over standing around and dropping loads of cash.

I'm a suburban dad. Brunch is beautiful. Here's the math...

If I take my wife to a nice dinner, I'll end up spending a grip. We're each getting a nice piece of steak or fish with a starch and a veggie. A few drinks, split a dessert, maybe, because my wife can't eat a whole one, and I am out about $75+ easy. We bring the kid, now we're talking almost $100.

But brunch... Same nice restaurant, the wife is just as impressed, and I get to dine like a true slob, "Could I have the salmon? Oh, and throw a sweet potato waffle with that and an omelette? I'm maybe out $20 bucks a head and I get home to spend some time on the couch watching sports.

Maybe a little overpriced. It's like $27 a head, for an omelette/waffle station, carving station, salad bar, all the standard breakfast items and several lunch/dinner entrees. Nothing super fancy, but everything is fresh made and plentiful.

You've been there for lunch so you know it's cool looking out on the runway watching the planes land.

I posted about this a year or so ago.

I went to a thing at my kid's school to help set up the school carnival. As I looked around, all the dads had on a variation of the suburban dad uniform...cargo shorts, running shoes and a T-shirt trying to hang on to some semblance of hipness (indie band, music festival, cross-fit gym, sports team...etc.). I was wearing the same.

It was then I knew.

after brunch we'll usually bounce around to a few other bars, with the weather warming up "day party" season is popping so we might hit one or two of those, we've been known to hit up the "dirty day shift" at a gentleman's club or two, the options are endless, there's nothing like drinking for 12 hours straight, it builds character.

can't do it like I used to. Usually need a nap at some point. but day-drinking is way better than night drinking as you get older. 100%

that's code for "I'm tapping out". If ya man says he has to run to the crib, or keeps checking his phone every five minutes, either he's being summoned home, or he hit the wall. You won't see him until next weekend.

Sounds crazy to have kale in a drink like that. I'll have it in my smoothie but not my likka.

in LA Women coming out the woodwork with way too much makeup on looking crazy

Hostesses fronting on people for no reason

Unnecessarily long waits

granted I was in the new Venice at 26 Beach.

In NY spots are a little crowded if anything, but never on some dickhead shit though

one and a half hours

Transplants in U Penn shirts leaving their spot on the curb, then coming back 5 minutes later stepping to your girl like 'nah this still my spot' so you got to regulate while in brunch mode?

nope these women CAKED in makeup. Looking like the 2017 'It' remake. No parts of sunlight peaking in their window when they put it on. Much better looking women in NYC imho
