In response to Reply # 0

it was the fucking BEATS behind her. it was the production, mostly. yeah she sang some heartache shit and all that but the production was doing some heavy lifting too.

that lightning in a bottle will not be recaptured. it's not 1990anything anymore.

for MJB to recapture that 'magic' she'd have to sing over Trap beats from some hot/up-and-coming-but-not-quite-at-the-top producer. like she did in 1990whatever with 411, My Life (and maybe Share My World). b/c back then part of what made those records so FRESH was the idea of an R&B songstress cooing and wailing over relatively 'hard' Rap beats was still fresh. MJB and Mariah Carey (...the actual Queen of Hip Hop Soul if you look at the facts) were in the process of creating something relatively new. MJB ain't out here doing that again. oh...and as for what made MJB's performances so special..this was back when we didn't think she could sing. but now...MJB knows she can sing and really she thinks she can SANG (thanks to 'Be Without You' and that 'No More Drama' Grammy performance) so she's not gonna go in the studio and give us those gutter heartbreak moaning barely awake vocals like she did all up and down My Life. that's not happening again. MJB is all about the full-throated Pop vocals now.

so no, the divorce doesn't has me excited for a new Mary record. i can't go home again. thankfully i still have 'I Love You' (especially the remix w/Smif-N-Wessun). when i want that old thing back i just cue that up and play it loud.

1. Breakdown. with Bone Thugs.

2. Fantasy. with ODB.

3. Honey. with the Lox.

4. Heartbreaker. with Missy and Da Brat.

5. The Roof. with Mobb Deep.

...and i haven't scratched the surface.

there is one Queen of HHS. and it's not MJB. Mariah has made MORE HHS songs than MJB. and she's made better ones.

b/c you know that Mariah was a massive Pop star right out the gate.

you know that when Mariah dropped her first HHS single (Fantasy w/ODB) we were all like...WHAT IN THE FUCK?? it seemed like a fluke. and the shit was hot too. then she kept doing it...and her label, Columbia, was not happy about it. but they had no choice - she was fucking/married to the label head. so initially all of her HHS stuff was relegated to remixes on her singles. until they divorced and then she went all the way w/the shit and started putting rappers on the album versions of her songs.

anyway, point is we both know getting on a Mariah record was more desirable b/c there was guaranteed to be bigger exposure and higher sales. which is why so many rappers jumped on her records. meanwhile, MJB was trying to distance herself from HH and so she was downplaying rap w/each successive record. her 'Queen' title seems to be based on her first 2 albums...and those albums have a serious dearth of rappers. especially when compared to what Mariah ended up doing.

i'm not dissing MJB just being real.

HHS Mary has been gone for a while. 'Be Without You' was the final nail in that coffin. she tried it again w/My Life II and look how that turned out ('Someone to Love Me' is the JAM though).

no divorce is going to bring her back to that. she's moved on.

but back to Mariah and Mary...it's like they wanted each other's career. Mariah came out Pop but wanted to be HHS. Mary came out HHS and wanted to be Pop. in the end they each got what they wanted - Mary got some limited Pop success. Mariah is the actual HHS diva but is mostly unacknowledged for all of the work she did in that genre. ppl kinda roll their eyes - as is being done in this subthread. LOL

Mariah's JOINTS go. I still listen to Breakdown. But those are pop songs with rappers on them. There is a difference. That there is a rapper on the joint is the only reason to call it HipHop anything. Has Mariah ever even been referred to as a Soul artist? Let alone HHS.

Mary IS hip hop soul. She pioneered the aesthetic. Meanwhile, Mariah had her Essence Fest DEBUT last year.

No. Just. No.

they were R&B.

for the earlier ones the rappers were featured on remixes, like 'Fantasy':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF0UrQWXhvU

this is the version that blew up. not the album version. which is more Pop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq09UkPRdFY

the one that had heads blown in late summer 1995 was the Bad Boy remix.

then came Always Be My Baby

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHp-IiDgMWg

...the remix w/Brat and Xscape blew up huge. that's the one i heard most often. not the original Pop version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfRNRymrv9k

by 1997 Mariah insisted on having rappers on the album versions.

so we got Honey which had some rap dust on the album version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=753_mUwbOJ4

but the remix was still deeper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy2bwwIsS40

and the motherfucking Roof gave a nod to 'Shook Ones'. on the album version.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOApp3n-abA

so of course she had to put Mobb Deep on the remix b/c Columbia was not ready for them to be on the album

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK7GIhB81JM

but the real bomb dropped on Breakdown. Columbia couldn't keep Bone Thugs off the album version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bC7V9dn1rC8

but the remix has even mo thugs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0tb3uZwU24

this was basically the end of Mariah playing around w/the Pop vs R&B shit on her singles.

after this the singles had rappers on them. period.

so Heartbreaker had Jay Z

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUzcLVyFLNo

and the Rainbow album had not only Jay Z but Missy, Brat, Snoop, Mystikal and Master P featured on songs.

and the trend has continued w/each album. rappers all over.

i agree that Mariah has been denied the title 'Queen of HHS' but IMO she's the one who deserves it. b/c during this time i just featured...MJB was NOT out there putting rappers on her albums or remixes like Mariah. MJB was courting a Pop career. she started w/Share My World and went hard on No More Drama. but she didn't really get it until 'Be Without You'...a fucking BALLAD (which sounds a lot like Mariah's 'We Belong Together' is the biggest hit of her career.

Mary IS the hiphop in her songs. She lends cred to rappers not the other way around. Hence Jayz's "I did.songs.with.MJB.my nigga." line....

http://hiphop-n-more.com/2016/11/new-video-mary-j-blige-thick-of-it

Its not her associations. Its her. I mean THIS is Mary in 2017. Yankee fitted and all.

Beyonce might be queen bey...

But Mary's the damn patron saint of hood Black women.

Can you make songs with all the big Polka artists- making you Polka adjacent and be the queen of Polka?

Versus the artist that takes a traditional -gendered genre- and transforms it creating a entirely new lane within polka?

Blige created the lane but Mimi ran up that fucking score. I was on that 'nah nigga' when this thread started but he brought his receipts. The fact Mary got better rapper hands doesn't negate the fact over her career the hits are pretty much in Mariah's favor.

Mariah has more of them than Mary.

i like more of Mariah's rapper collabos than Mary's.

if they ask me who's the Queen of HHS i'd say Mariah. and i'd expect pearl clutching and gasping and falling out and 'NO HE DIDN'T's.

I am ALL for unconventional. But that Mary is queen of HHS is like...canon. Anything else heresy.

i dig lots of her records.

i dig more of Mariah's. but shit...Mariah has done more work in more genres. her House remixes are almost as great as her Hip Hop records.

but back to Mary - i dig her stuff as a general idea. i don't agree that a divorce will bring back the old Mary. i think that old Mary is gone and will never return. too many factors came together at the right time to make records like 'Be Happy', 'I Love You', 'My Life' and 'No One Else'. if she could do THAT again she'd have already done it.

But I just might be lol

I enjoy her new stuff. I just love how she represents an aesthetic that I can relate to. I'm not out here rock'n Yankee fitteds- but I get it. She doesnt tone down that hood Black girl vibe - or its beauty and I Love it.

That- more than the music is why we will ALWAYS show up for her. Even after she was singing for Chicken...

I cant believe I went this hard for MJB lol

every time someone brings up Mary's BK commercial (which wasn't some cooning shit, IMO. the problem was the song was kinda wack) i have to hear Durand's version. if Mary had sang it like he did that commercial would've been a classic.

Carey's music got demonstrably more street AFTER MJB showed there was money to be made in that lane. It wasn't by accident she went to puffy and WuTang who had already been successful with Blige

despite having a couple years head start, in terms of making records, Carey was late on the bus relative to the integration of Hiphop and hiphop artists (which Blige did from her 1st album and on pretty every record since)

now as Blige's career progressed and she got older (along with her audience) she went a little more "grown and sexy" with it, but she'll still rep either with a track or two or a remix along the way to show she ain't completely sold out

but of course there is the possibility of similar non-opinion-based information than what is shown above (*shrug*)

sure. of course, Jody Watley had shown both Mary and Mariah the way w/'Friends'...but i digress. Mariah was the first to come like that from the Pop world.

Mary had a pretty hot start. and then when Mariah jumped into the genre she basically shut the shit down. b/c i don't recall hearing BUZZ about MJB's rapper features after 'You're All I Need' w/Method Man.

i recall though each time Mariah came w/one of those rap remixes in the mid 90s it was like 'DAMN!' b/c she wasn't going the easy route and using Heavy D or Chubb Rock or Young MC or some shit like that. her first feature was ODB. 'Me and Mariah go back like babies and pacifiahs'. it was hard to wrap the mind around a certified Pop diva working w/WuTang - and the craziest motherfucker in WuTang at that. she started there. then on the next album she was working w/Bone Thugs and then Mobb Deep....

and as we later learned about Whitney, it turned out this was her all along. she was driving the bus on all of the rap features. it wasn't done by the label for $. the label was fighting her all along. she was the one who wanted to make R&B and Hip-Hop Soul records. after 'Fantasy' was such a hit she gained leverage. and she kept gaining leverage w/each hit. that was her doing, not Columbia's.

but anyway, i agree that Mary came out first. and if she is the Queen she abdicated the throne and Mariah sat in it.

the focus is on Hip Hop Soul records.

i proposed that Mariah has made more of them than Mary.

MJB:

Real Love
What's the 411
You Don't Have to Worry (Remix)
My Love (Remix)
What's the 411 (Remix)
Reminisce (Remix)
Love No Limit (Remix)
You Remind Me (Remix)
You're All I Need/I'll Be There for You
I Love You
I Love You (Remix)
Be Happy (Remix)
I Can Love You
Love Is All We Need
Love @ First Sight
Let Me Be the 1
Hate It or Love It (Remix) (aka MJB da MVP)
Cant Hide From Luv
Grown Woman
The One
Good Love
Someone To Love Me
Next Level

Mariah:

Fantasy (Remix)
Always Be My Baby (Remix)
Honey
The Roof
Breakdown
Sweetheart
Heartbreaker
Thank God I Found You (Remix)
Crybaby
Loverboy (Remix)
Don't Stop
Last Night a DJ Saved My Life
Boy (I Need You)
You Got Me
Irresistible
Miss You
I Know What You Want
It's Like That
Say Somethin
Get Your Number
One and Only
To the Floor
So Lonely
We Belong Together (Remix)
Makin It Last All Night
Migrate
Side Effects
4real4real
I Be Lovin U Long Time (Remix)
Touch My Body (Remix)
Obsessed (Remix)
HATEU
Up Out My Face
Triumphant
Beautiful (Remix)
You Don't Know What to Do
I Don't

...so like i said. Mariah has more HHS records - or records w/rapper features.

My All/Stay a While

Honey (So So Def Remix) w/Brat and Dupri as opposed to the other remix w/The Lox and Mase.

The One (So So Def Remix) w/Bonecrusher.

All I Want For Christmas Is You (So So Def Remix)

Don't Forget About Us (Remix)

Bye Bye (Remix)

Thirsty

Infinity

i was surprised to find Mariah has more of these rapper features than MJB since MJB is so frequently associated w/the rap/sung collabo. but MJB wasn't the first to do it (that's Jody) and Mariah's done more of them.

as for who's got the higher quality HHS records...i dunno. my heart wants to say Mary but when i see the list Mariah's got more of them that are 'my jam' than Mary. not that Mary's not the shit b/c she is but when it comes to HHS i'd give Mariah the 'title'. she earned it.

once she started doing this kinda music. after her first 2 albums, she made that switch and it didn't appeal to me. felt almost like she was faking, trying to hang with the cool kids. like if adele had a single with 2chainz over a mike will made it beat.

even with her Mimi album, I preferred the less hip-hoppy songs. to me, he lane is we belong together rather than all her rapper songs.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

my point was if she were going to recapture what made My Life work she'd have to sing over what's currently hot in these streets. that's Trap.

she has a song w/Quavo so she already knows what i'm talking about.

her low self worth...(which she admits too), being too nice (no such thing) coupled with shitty men taking advantage of her?

Angie M described a time when Mary was on the come up. Angie messed up her rent money. She called up Mary and without question Mary was like come get me and rode in the backseat of Angie's friend's Accord to a check cashing spot.

Mary mentioned how to prevent that nigga from feeling insecure about her fame she gave him everything she owned.

then he started chipping away at her esteem.

when one is in a bunch of relationships that end badly the best place to look for where the problem most likely lies is the common element

yourself

now it's easier to say "they" are a bunch of victimizers (which they might very well be) but that still presents the question of why you keep ending up with - choosing - them

plus relationships are hard enough without the variables of fame and money which bring opportunity to get distracted away from one another

do you know what it's like to have self esteem? You don't just wake up one day and feel better. what's it going to cause them to believe? I'm more interested in how a person reaches their breaking point.

i never said anything about "easy"

i'm speaking more to "what other choice do you have?"

>do you know what it's like to have self esteem?

everyone has some level of it

back on topic (the OP at least) - if you you have a drinking problem, it probaly isn't wise to be around a bunch of liquor

likewise

if your self esteem is low, getting into a relationship is gonna exacerbate it. anything goes wrong, you're gonna try and compensate with "try harder" or alternately turn on yourself

(both generally out of a sense of "something is wrong with ME..")

until you resolve (mot address, RESOLVE) why you feel "less than whatever" you're a ticking time bomb

>what's it going to
>cause them to believe?

believe what?

>I'm more interested in how a person
>reaches their breaking point.

what "breaking point"? she's not DEAD, she's (understandably) hurt due to the end of something she didn't want to fail

or are you talking about something else?

what I mean by believing is that it's often easier for someone not in the circumstance to stay, what one should do. When I believe it's not easy and that's with anything any of us have trouble separating from. I like Mary but, there was a time when I got tired of hearing about her drama. Like you, I would think she should just remove herself from the situation. It changed once she got married because I figured she had found the love she longed for. I imagine this time around it being even harder for her because she married. Hearing her talk about fighting for her marriage when only to realize that he was in love with someone else is disheartening. Hearing her talk about how much she tried to please him and it still wasn't enough resonated with me. Losing yourself

Lastly, as far as her music, I think we can all stop saying how she'll make good on it now. Folks ain't trying to hearing music that is mature. Folks like, heartbroken Mary and that's awful. lol

128. "what would empathy look like exactly?"
In response to Reply # 126

i'm identifying the ONE thing she (and anyone else) can control: your own choices

>Like you, I would think she should just remove herself from the >situation.

i didn't say that though (nor do I think it)...thought for grins again I say: what other option is there? stay? wallow? what?

what I AM talking about the aftermath of how to deal with things falling apart, if for no other reason than to try to avoid getting caught in a loop

>It changed once she got married because I figured she had
>found the love she longed for.

why though?

one can hope, but only time would tell that

right?

>I imagine this time around it
>being even harder for her because she married.

I'm not imagining....especially seeing the pattern

>Hearing her talk about fighting for her marriage when only to >realize that he was in love with someone else is disheartening.

right....

>Hearing her talk about how much she tried to please him and it still
>wasn't enough resonated with me.

THAT is exactly what I described. Upping the effort to please someone who isn't even being fully engaged 'cause they out creepin' but still trying to hold onto you

yes. that hurts, but that isn't a "me/I" thing...that's a THEM thing

messed up things happen. sadly. the measure is how you respond. GRIEVE, but don't get stuck there

>Losing yourself

How is being so into someone else that you "lose yourself" (your words) not a recipe for disaster?

In a relationship you are supposed to complement one another, not be transformed into something else so they will be pleased

and again (as was my earlier point) until you are strong enough to not have your SELF-esteem dictated (or shaken) then you are putting yourself in jeopardy of this kind of pain

>Lastly, as far as her music, I think we can all stop saying
>how she'll make good on it now.

I'm not into the idea of her being miserable for my entertainment

I want her to "be happy" (too)

If you've never been loved or know the feeling then it would be hard to remove yourself. Rather, you find yourself following the same patterns. So what I get from your replies is that you think it's easy.

Look! I don't know Mary but, how folks described her...she's quite the giver and I'd love to see her at peace. Speaking as a woman who understands love....

Mary J. Blige created a style...a sound...Mary J. Blige amassed a HUGE cult who were listening to her not because of the beats but because she spoke to the heartbreak women were going through on a daily whether it was their turbulent relationship with their man or dealing with self loathing and depression...

Mary J. Blige, as someone else said was hip-hop.....When she collaborated with a emcee it was on equal grounds....She didn't need Method Man to be accepted by the hood....She didn't need Grand Pupa to be accepted by hip-hop fans.....

On the flipside, Mariah Carey came out the gate as a pop star. She was an ADULT CONTEMPORARY, UBER pop star much in the same vein as Celine Dion. She needed that ODB cameo to be accepted by R&B and hip-hop fans....And once that shit blew up she never looked back....

And let's not act like Mariah's image didn't give her a leg up on Mary in terms of how big she was in the market place....The half white pop princess married to Tommy Motolla better had sold more records than a hip-hop obsessed chick from Yonkers....

Man...hardly anyone that called themselves an R&B fan was placing Mariah over Mary...NO ONE....Mariah, who was dope at what she did, wasn't even trying to be "black" until she saw that R&B and hip-hop was taking over in 1994...By that time Mary was already entrenched as a R&B/hip-hop goddess...

All this entire thread reminds me is 1) There's a lot of revisionist history going on and 2) We need more women posting at OKP.....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

If the question is who is the queen of R&B? It's probably Mary.

If it who is the Queen of Pop? Probably Mariah.

If it is who has more bangers? Probably Mariah.

If it is who has a better body of work? I personally go with Mariah by a razor thin edge mainly because of Emancipation of Mimi.

Who is more impactful and important music history-wise? Easily Mary.

But I am still stunned at how when you line the hits up just how much of a killer Mariah was. I feel like the reason we sleep is because she's the vapid light skinned chick and didn't take her seriously because she's half a cartoon character...meanwhile she was leading her squad to championships, lol.

i throw Mariah in the conversation for Queen of HHS b/c no one else does meanwhile she's definitely earned a place in the conversation. she's put in more work than MJB and just about any other singer i can name. i dunno where MJB got the 'queen' thing from...i guess b/c she was associated w/the genre and it's called 'Soul' and so it's like that Aretha thing. but like...i just don't agree that it's automatically Mary. b/c...Mariah has been there all along pretty much.

it doesn't feel authentic'. its is if she's trying to fit in.she started out on that pop life and blew. then she came to the other side. it made folks question what she was doing, like she wasn't supposed to be making records with ODB when she was just singing visions of love.

MJB was always hip-hop and we all knew she belonged.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

>Mary J. Blige, as someone else said was hip-hop.....When she
>collaborated with a emcee it was on equal grounds....She
>didn't need Method Man to be accepted by the hood....She
>didn't need Grand Pupa to be accepted by hip-hop fans.....

oh she was a rapper now? LOL

when she started she was an unknown who had made a demo at an amusement park. she had sang a hook on a Supercat record. she was no one. she definitely needed cosigns when she started. and she got them.

>On the flipside, Mariah Carey came out the gate as a pop star.
>She was an ADULT CONTEMPORARY, UBER pop star much in the same
>vein as Celine Dion. She needed that ODB cameo to be accepted
>by R&B and hip-hop fans....And once that shit blew up she
>never looked back....

agreed. but not really b/c Mariah had love from the Blacks with 'Vision of Love'. that shit was EVERYWHERE. 'I'll Be There' too. but yes, 'Fantasy' took it to a new level.

>And let's not act like Mariah's image didn't give her a leg up
>on Mary in terms of how big she was in the market place....The
>half white pop princess married to Tommy Motolla better had
>sold more records than a hip-hop obsessed chick from
>Yonkers....

i agree that Mariah probably got more collabos in part b/c she was a bigger name w/more label support. but also b/c she was 'down'.

>Man...hardly anyone that called themselves an R&B fan was
>placing Mariah over Mary...NO ONE....Mariah, who was dope at
>what she did, wasn't even trying to be "black" until she saw
>that R&B and hip-hop was taking over in 1994...By that time
>Mary was already entrenched as a R&B/hip-hop goddess...

i have not claimed that 'anyone else' would put Mariah over MJB for 'Queen of HHS'. i said that *****************I***************** do.

>All this entire thread reminds me is 1) There's a lot of
>revisionist history going on and 2) We need more women posting
>at OKP.....

naw. more ppl disagreeing w/me wouldn't change anything. and i've posted this before - years ago. when there were more women here.

but you gotta know better.

MJB didn't create the shit. she definitely jumped on the trend early and became heavily associated with it.

but since other ppl were doing it before her...she can't be said to have created it.

'U barking up the wrong tree...I'm a not a Mary STAN....But I am a music writer and someone who has interviewed, spent time with and written about Blige....

So I'm coming from this from another angle.....

I feel funny derailing ol' girl's thread pitting Mariah and Mary against each other, so I'll just say u were wrong on many point, most importantly dismissing Mary J's success as having dope beats to carry her voice...lol

U talk to any woman...ANY woman that listened to Blige and they would tell you that beats were not the reason they listened to Blige....That's all I got to say about the matter, dog...

that doesn't change my mind about anything, of course.

IN
MY
OPINION

Mariah is the Queen of HHS.

Mariah has made more HHS records that i feel.

Mary is a legend, of course. she's made many records i feel.

>I feel funny derailing ol' girl's thread pitting Mariah and
>Mary against each other,

OMG THE HUMANITY!!!

she'll live.

so I'll just say u were wrong on many
>point, most importantly dismissing Mary J's success as having
>dope beats to carry her voice...lol

uh yeah.

the success of those records wasn't just about MJB. it was also the production. IMO it was largely the production. it was her singing those words over those beats.

if she sang 'I Love You' over a violin i don't think Black women would've been cosigning as much.

but i defer to you b/c you are THE expert, mister music writer. you know Black women better than me too so let me just shut up w/my opinion. b/c i'm wrong. you know everything mister know it all. the man w/the plan. got it.

All good homie...But I was never getting at your initial point...I got kind of wrapped up in some statements (by someone else) that I viewed as flawed at best...

So I commented on it and further derailed your thread (again, my apologies...)

for dudes. I won't blame Mary cuz who knows, but its so easy to go out and find a chick.

the reality is a dude can have a superwoman at the house, but it won't really matter if he decides to look elsewhere. and there's zero his wife can do to stop it.

she was one of the rare r&b chicks that every hiphop dude admitted they loved her music and would be willing to go to a show of hers... cuz Mary was Hiphop as far as we were concerned

that's what made that Best of Both World tour of Jay and Mary so brilliant.... u had an audience of both male and female enjoying both artists equally
