"What are the biggest event music videos not made by Michael Jackson?"

What should be included in the top 10 if we don't include any Michael Jackson music videos?

Beyonce's Lemonade and what else?

'Bad Romance' had a big splash.

Yonce seems to have shown the way - the only way to really make a dent these days is the surprise album - ideally w/a slew of music videos or maybe a movie.

Kendrick i thought was going to double up on it by giving us 2 albums in 4 days.

b/c that was happening w/all of those Pop acts back then - they'd 'take over' TRL for a day or a week. sometimes it'd happen w/acts that didn't really fit b/c they weren't actually part of that teen universe and the 'take over' felt forced. it was only right at the very beginning. like when Britney and BSB and NSync were doing it.

that's also around the time that bullshit started about selling a million or more copies of an album in the first week. the teen pop acts were all trying to 'out sell' each other and the fans got brainwashed into caring....

so weird. why do we care about sales figures and proceeds for billion dollar corporations that aren't sharing any of that $ w/us? why do we fall for that shit? i guess we have to fill the hours of each day w/something. why that?

i assumed you meant the video's release included -something- unusual and intended to grab the public's attention.

like when MJ released 'Bad' via a 30 or 60 minute long TV special on CBS. or when some of his other videos premiered on multiple TV networks at once.

stuff like that. not just expensive music videos that we liked.

around the tv to watch. It was a big production, with story and everything and next day everyone was talking about it.

I mean a lot of folks tried to make events by having big expensive elaborate videos like Chris Brown's Fine China, but very few were actual events.

The controversy that this video had made it a big event. Complaints from feminist groups, and on the other side of the debate - praises from gender equality groups saying that it changed the stereotypes of abuse.

I saw this video far too young and knew I was seeing something real lol... that moment has lasted in my memory

It doesn't get much better than when LL is in the zone lifts his arms and you see those white deodorant stains on his pits. Him and that band were the best of all time on MTV unplugged.

Never saw Alice in Chains or The Cure so i can't comment. Only have the audio to The Roots during Game Theory - that would have been cool too if they had released the video.

In response to Reply # 0

Honestly MJ owns this list because I remember the last time he had a world premier video was for "Childhood" last one I remember at least. I know the internet changed things in a big way but I honestly can't think of another artist who would have a network television station stop everything to premier a video, MJ the goat damn it.

"Runaway" was dope for Kanye being on his redemption/comeback vibe. . . over nothing lol, but that was a pretty big moment imo.

and I honestly paid no attention at the time but Pharrell doing the 24hr video thing with "Happy" was all over the news.

Only maybe Madonna, Janet and Beyonce's videos were nearly on the level of cultural event that MJJ videos were. Maybe Hammer's 2 Legit to quit.

Sorry Kanye, but not even close.

Yea.. but even Janet didnt get primetime treatment till it was the Scream video (w/ Mike) I think...

Madonna never did... Beyonce took the model to cable which is closest I think.

Hammer might have 1 or 2 from that era though

In response to Reply # 0

In Living Colour. Seems like not so long ago. But that was such a different era and that was really MJ's last stand with being a dominant pop star.

That was my line up: Sunday evening watching the Simpsons followed by In Living Color. I could have the order mixed up, but I'm remembering it that way.

Other than MJ, some others not mentioned - or maybe mentioned and I glossed over:

Pearl Jam -'Daugther' the anticipation for anything new from PJ was insane in the fall of '93.

Janet Jackson - 'IF' - I think after That's the Way Love Goes hit, people were thirsty for more Janet.

Mariah Carey - I feel like Honey was a big to do at the time. I could be wrong, but I feel like she had some big releases.

But I honestly feel like the Brittney Spears 'Hit Me Baby One More Time" video was one of the most discussed videos I can remember during my teenage years. That and 'Back that Ass Up.'

Pink Floyd rumor that they soundtracked the Wizard of Oz.

Don't really think it matters if it was a rumor started by someone on acid or an actual promotions company. Pink Floyd paired with the Wizard of Oz may be one of the best music videos ever. When it came out in Boston in 1996 the city ran out of copies of the movie Wizard of Oz.

Another rumor about the song Echoes going with the end of 2001 space odyssey and that one might be better because it matches so well and is only one side - nice and short.

Since the rumor started in Boston some theaters actually saved themselves from bankruptcy playing these things and countless copies of the highest selling album in history have been sold as well as maybe the most well known movie ever. It was once played on TCM and the announcer asked a question "If this thing is only a rumor then how did they get it played on TV?" (paraphrasing)
