Who is picking cotton? The black girl? Or is this intended for someone else? And are there still jobs picking cotton to be found nowadays?

I'm hoping they asked the Black girl to hold the sign without reading it first.

now I'm confused. Who is asking her to the prom and what's her reaction? I think she was cool with it which is sad as shit.

Fuck those teenaged school girls! The world needs to see this!

For real though...after hearing the context this seems much more like a teachable moment than a shaming one. And it's not a by-product of a complex oppressive system of lies and omissions. (lol) It's kids not knowing how this will be perceived and needing to be told why and how they are unintentionally hurting and offending people so that they don't do it again in the future.

Perhaps jessie didn't think this out. But that's a very bad look. What a bully. Take a second to think of his motivation in involving himself in this.

EVERY parent will experience their child saying or doing something that is offensive. If their intent is not malicious....it's a teachable moment, not a shaming one. My daughter asked a little person if they were an elf once. I'm just grateful that Jesse Williams wasn't there to see it.

what feels like Eons ago.

I didnt read what Jesse Williams said but the idea of a "teachable moment"
sounds good but uh ... no

Sometimes you gotta take the weight even if its for your own ignorance
and sometimes you have to do it so others know aint shit sweet
or innocent about these actions. There's more than one way to learn.

I swear we let waaay too much shit ride and this young sister is
an example of the lax attitude towards our own collective pride.
This is nothing new, we see this same bullshit every year all year
around high school and college campuses. FOH with these
soft ass "teachable moments"

In situations like this I always flip it and see if the outrage and
plea cops would be the same. Imagine if baby girl was Jewish
and the sign said some historically insensitive holocaust concentration
type joke ... yeah, the reaction would be polar opposite.

I would hate for this to follow her around for the rest of her life if it were merely a dumb inside joke.

I am just glad that all the dumb shit I said as a young person doesn't follow around to haunt me for the rest of my life.

my lil sis's boyfriend is in a white fraternity, i had a similar conversation with him the other night about not letting (even mildly) racist shit slide because you don't want these dudes to think it's ever ok.

But I have a hard time thinking that their intent was malicious. The white girl is asking a black dude to the prom so it doesn't serve her interest to try to hurt his feelings. I figured they're texting each other and he's saying 'I have to pick cotton for my aunt'. So the clueless white girl thinks her sign is a nice thing. For her, it'd be no different than if she said 'you don't have to deliver newspapers anymore...you can deliver me to the prom!' Admittedly, I might be being too generous here.

That seems to be the most likely scenario with the information given. And if that's reflective of the truth....then punishing them (or publicly shaming them to millions of people across the world) is not the way adults should respond. The clueless white girl certainly needs to be taught about what line she crossed and why it's so important to be aware of this going forward. But I think we should save our outrage for real racists instead of well-meaning but clueless teens that need guidance in their race sensitivity.

I derived my interpretation from those links.

31. "What black dude?"
In response to Reply # 25

I thought the two white girls were asking their friend, the Black girl in the pic, to the prom. And for the one parent to say "it was an inside joke" is fucked up because I'm sure he knows the history of the south. Shit ain't funny and he knew better.

where it was to the Black girl who's grandmother owns a cotton farm. What are the chances the grandmother is white?

The white girl is asking a black guy to the prom via an instagram pic. The black guy is being home-schooled at his aunt's cotton farm.

I misunderstood. In a hetero-normative sense.

" He said the black teen, who is homeschooled and initially wasn’t going to prom, has a grandmother who owns a cotton farm in Alabama."

I got the story wrong. I assumed the 'black teen' was a boy that wasn't in the photo.

Whether the intent is or isnt malicious doesnt matter. Its hard
enough to determine intent in the first place all we can do is
look at the result (the sign) and go from there.

The white girl is asking a black dude to the prom
>so it doesn't serve her interest to try to hurt his feelings.

White Supremacist and Liberally tacit racists sleep with black
folks everyday B. Not saying the girl is either one of those but
hey

>I figured they're texting each other and he's saying 'I have
>to pick cotton for my aunt'.

Not sure about the state of his aunties business but cotton
picking was mechanized over half a century ago

Not all punishable moments have to deal with public shaming for
millions of people but I guess we do live in the social media age
So I see your point there. As far as I know the 'clueless' white
girls are serving suspension which is a good start.

I think that our school systems treat our history with kid gloves
to absolve themselves of any wrong doing which further
perpetuates this behavior. But am I gonna be upset because
someone isnt here for the 'clueless' white girls and their
fuckery ?? Not in the least.

Like I said our approach to this stuff is so weak that we
see this bullshit happening from elementary to Ivy League and
these kids get to claim 'cluelessness'

Our kids are tried as grown men and nobody bats an eye but
white girls can live in the comforts of being 'clueless' their
entire lives. The clueless archetype is so alive that hollywood
as capitalized off of it.

At this point I'm not saving outrage for "real" racists when this
type shit just enables the behavior. Im on the James Baldwin,
constant state of rage and its exhausting any effort to entertain
the bullshit

now that I know the REAL story I'm alot less sympathetic. I assumed they were addressing a black male. The sign is addressing the black girl in the photo. Completely different dynamic. It didn't make sense to me that these white girls would sneak in a racial insult while asking a boy to the prom. Knowing that the sign addresses the black girl in the photo negates the benefit of the doubt I was affording them.

46. "No. Intent matters. "
In response to Reply # 39

Listen if the black girl saw this and laughed because she got the inside joke then that would be a very different conversation than if the intent was to hurt the feelings of the black girl and the black girl saw this and burst out in tears.

In the first scenario the black girl would need as much re-education as the white girls and in the second scenario the black girl is blameless and a hate crime might have been committed against her.

I don't know if the first or the second scenario happened but let's try not and act like those two scenarios are exactly the same.

Let's not act like intent doesn't affect the offensiveness of the act and what the proper consequences are.
