Also, for black people, there might be some conditioning involved. Staring at white folks back in the day could get you killed.

Some people are autistic.

Some people have an anxiety disorder or social phobia.

Some people simply have their mind on any number of things. What to make for dinner, making mental notes to check their email about that job, figuring out the budget in a tight month, etc.

Some people come from a place where eye contact with strangers can easily lead to conflict.

There's a long ass list of reasonable assumptions reasonable people should be making before they get to "scared".

I'm sure your response will be "I'm not talking about all that I'm talking about people who are SCARED"

To that I ask: Exactly how do you deduce whether or not "scared" is the reason someone doesn't make eye contact?

esp in a large city - people are just driving their bodies while withdrawn in thought from point A to point B

engaging in eye contact breaks thought because its an invitation to discussion

I am not sure it something that comes naturally.

I think from an evolutionary perspective eye contact was a signal of either wanting to fight or fugg.

There are lots of cultures around the world where children are taught not to make eye contact with teachers/adults out of deference (for example).

and I agree that healthy eye contact can be a learned behavior, and isn't necessarily innate. or rather, that a lack of healthy eye contact, doesn't necessarily indicate anything other than that behavior hasn't been learned

but while healthy eye contact is valuable, all eye contact ain't created equal. there is certainly eye contact that is assertive or aggressive

There are many reasons which have already been pointed out. The duration of eye contact and the conveyed messages or meanings behind it could be problematic. Too much eye contact can feel threatening and feel invasive/intrusive.

I usually glance at people and acknowledge them to be polite when passing, but that is all. I'm usually deep in thought and don't want to get 'involved' in any way.

likely just don't wanna be bothered. some could be from insecurity. in the office, they're prolly just not paying attention to you and focused on what they're doing.

if its a chick, she gets enough hey girl, smile sometimes comments to make it a hassle to eye contact with a dude.

I tend to give a headnod or nothing, depending on the environment.

This evident in the fact that you have two opposing responses to everyone pointing out the myriad possibilities for people who don't eye contact.

1. This "Captain Obvious" nonsense, as though you were already aware. You're dismissing these responses because they're too obvious.

2. ...... but then you say "Only Dumb questions are the ones not asked by dumb people", which implies that you didn't really know and then go on to say "You act like you don't know how to expand a conversion and still stay focused."

You can't complain about the fact that people expanded the conversation in a way that clearly illustrated that "scared" is just about the least reasonable possibility, pissing and moaning about "captain obvious" and then act like you asked an honest question. The two are mutually exclusive.

criticism which appears to be why you felt the need to to point out that you already knew that not all people were scared of eye contact, and that we should have implicitly have understood what you did or didn't know.

As I've said before, I just answered the topic in accordance with how it was worded. I wasn't thinking about what you did or didn't already know. My statement that it's not always that people are scared of eye contact was a generalized and objective one, and did not pertain directly to you at all.

I'm not sure how asking one solitary question is "caping", much less "caping hard" for the other poster.

No additional thoughts, ideas, or opinions.

In fact you haven't added to the discussion in any way other than to whine about people explaining the plethora of more probable reasons.

You say I'm boxed/limited/trapped in one opinion.

So I'll bite: explain what that one opinion is and offer a counter perspective.

I'm shocked, rev.

It's so telling that conversation gets very difficult for you when it's not relegated to bullshit clichés.

It doesn't make sense to answer the question "why do you hold this opinion" with "it's my opinion" when you're the one asking "why" in the first place.

I asked you softball questions. It's weird that you find basic inquiries into the logic that leads to the opinion you chose to discuss as "argumentative".

Saying "because that's my opinion" doesn't explain the basis for your opinion.

It's telling that instead of answering that very simple question and engaging the conversation with sincere thought and ideas you simply deflect.

That's long been your go-to move when you don't really have the ability to articulate a substantial thought. The only one in a box here is the guy who can't explain how he deduces that people who don't look him in the eye do so out of fear.

"Body language" doesn't explain anything.

"Body language" can be interpreted in many ways and I've found that people have a tendency to default to a few core interpretations and ignore other possibilities.

You've centered on fear and for all you're talk about me being in a "box" you don't seem to have any substantial reasoning to deduce fear as the reason people won't look you in the eye.

>My Dude. You Box is wait.

You refuse to go beyond the surface of anything and deflect like crazy anytime someone scratches the thinnest layer beyond that surface. There is no smaller box than that.

>You can't seem to grasp the fact
>that it's not that deep

Where did I say or imply that it was "deep"?

How does asking you a very simple question about the logic behind your conclusion somehow make it "deep"?

Actually, interesting that you say this.

The only thing in this entire post lacking in depth is... well...

You.

You know, the guy who asks a question but balks the second someone attempts to actually engage the subject beyond the comfort of your preconceptions.

Box indeed.

>nor the fact that my opinion is one of many, and that it's not >static.

I don't grasp that your opinion is one of many and not static? Really? How did you arrive at this conclusion?

>I just articulated one
>observation and a random conclusion. You on the other hand
>want to argue. I don't

It says a lot about you that you consider a simple question about the logic you used to arrive at your opinion an argument.

You make broad, general statements and seem to have a problem having an actual discussion about them if that discussion challenges your perceptions even slightly. Rather than explore the subject you hide behind non sequiturs and deflections and ad hominem retorts.

You did make a post to pass the time. If it's "not that deep", as you say, and you simply "wanted to pass the time" it shouldn't have been difficult to answer the question.

For a guy who just wanted to pass the time, you'd think you'd actually value some sort of actual discussion and not a bunch of empty platitudes.

>NINJA! GET A GRIP on life and put the Grand Puba Philosopher

Well, as you say... it's not that deep. The fact that you characterize my very basic question as "grand puba philosopher stone" status is a little alarming.

Further, this is Okayplayer.com....not "life", lmao.

You asked a question. We answered it according to how it was worded, and the upshot is that there are a myriad of reasons why people don't like to make eye contact, and it's not necessarily because people are scared to do so.

I don't know what the problem is with that, and why you felt the need to make another post stating that people didn't understand your intent with the original post.

are reluctant to make eye contact is not close minded at all - quite the opposite.

A confident person would not have felt the need to make another thread in the same post after asking the question that you did in the original post. You come across as being very insecure.

People answered you question in accordance with how you chose to word it. If you can't deal with the responses, don't make the post in the first place.

Like, you ran straight for the most low common denominator possibility. The easiest assumption to make.

In other words, you asked the question about the option that required the least amount of critical thought.

Then got all pissy when people gave perfectly reasonable responses that explained how there are other, much more likely and reasonable probabilities for this in most people.

As usual you ran with the Basic Bob version.

And even then you were getting very basic softball questions.

This entire "conflict", since you seem to think that's what this is, is about you not wanting to evaluate how you arrive at the conclusion that people who don't look you in the eyes as "scared".

It's not arguing to ask you to substantiate the premise of your own post.

The post was going really well to begin with and I don't think anyone was reading anything too deeply into it. If you didn't think it was that deep yourself why would you feel the need to make the comments that you did in post 44? The fact is you derailed your own post and then tried to place blame on others for trying to so.

If it bothers you so much in the future that you may feel misunderstood, may I suggest that you actually put more context and clarity into any subsequent posts instead of assuming that others can read your mind. This is the internet and words on a screen do not have the benefit of non-verbal language. Please and thankyou.

In response to Reply # 0

But the setting defines a lot of the context for the 'welcoming' eye contact.

If you're walking down the sidewalk of a neighborhood street in the daylight and see an individual walking in the other direction, both people are more likely to be friendly to each other than if that encounter happened at night.

But even if the other person doesn't make eye contact that doesn't necessarily imply a lack of respect or regard. For instance, if I'm walking home from the bus stop at night and I walk in the opposite direction of a woman, I won't make eye contact with her because I wouldn't want her to think I'm leering or have an alterior motive behind the making eye contact. My intent is for her to feel safe, even though we won't have any interaction.

But I think you're wanting a reason why people don't feel comfortable making pleasant eye contact with random people. I don't have an answer for that question, tho.

Diplomats instructed to 'avoid eye contact' with Tillerson: report

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has remained relatively removed from President Trump's administration and his own department, a new report by The Washington Post says, adding that many diplomats have yet to meet him and some have been told to avoid eye contact.

The Post report reads:

"Most of his interactions are with an insular circle of political aides who are new to the State Department. Many career diplomats say they still have not met him, and some have been instructed not to speak to him directly — or even make eye contact."
