Black people from the Southside like the White Sox.

Black people from the Northside and Evanston can like either team, but usually the Cubs.

Since we have no proximity to either park, I think people kinda go with whoever's winning over here. Bar/restaurants on this side of town usually fly both flags.

People wear Sox caps because they look cooler, but I'm seeing a lot of kids switch over to cubs caps.

I'm a die-hard Sox fan, and I'll stay that way. But I got REALL annoyed at the amount of newly minted cub fans last season. Talking that "it's great for the city" jive.

I like sports drama, so I'll grant you that part. But with my general disdain for all things Wrigleyville, I found it impossible to root for those fuckers. and if by "great for the city" they mean, "20 year old suburbanites acting a goddamned fool for two weeks", then yeah.

I work downtown, and the parade was a shitshow.

I think it's because it's cheaper to go to a Sox game, and a lot less hassle. At least it was when I was a kid. Now, it's expensive either way.

I was at a concert and brother behind me was a lil salty talking about "Y'all forgot we got a championship with the White Sox?" I just turned around and said Southside and he replied, SOUTHSIDE!

That made me think geography played a big part but I can see what the Westside folks are talking about.

I generally wear a sox cap during baseball season, and I tend to go a few shops and eateries here and there in Wrigleyville. They give you *that look*, but they think you're an angry Sox fan who's prone to violence, so they don't dare confront you. Whereas, admittedly, a Cub fan in a Sox establishment is gonna get an earful.

the Sox fans have more ire for the Cubs and Cubs fans than Cubs fans have for the Sox or their fans.

from what i see Cubs fans are kinda like "oh. okay" about Sox fans. and that tends to 'infuriate' Sox fans. LOL

I can't lie. How does the old saying go: "My favorite teams are the Sox, and whoever's playing the cubs" ( they use that in any rivalry, but we mean that shit.)

>
>from what i see Cubs fans are kinda like "oh. okay" about Sox

Yeah, when they sucked, this was definitely the case. But now cub fans won't stop talking shit to us. They're even a bit confrontational if you catch them in their part of town. I had a guy tell me ( with a straight face, even) "how can you support a team like that?"

So yeah. There's gonna be a few 'cub fan gets punched in the mouth' headlines around town this summer.

In response to Reply # 0

1. Fuck the Cubs.

2. the AL is boring and weird.

3. I spent 4 yrs on the South Side and 19 yrs on the North Side including a 7 year stint living 3 blocks from Wrigley.

4. And still - fuck the Cubs.

5. I grew up w/the Cardinals. Which means I grew up feeling "eh" about the Cubs - at best. I tried to be a fan that year my man Steve Bartman was around and when that shit went down I was not mad at all. Which told me I could never be a Cubs fan. After that I stopped trying. Fuck 'em.

6. Anyway, for most ppl here it's about geography and familial/community ties. Ppl tend to cheer for whichever team they grew up watching or whichever team their family supports. So there are definitely plenty black Cubs fans all over the city and plenty black Sox fans all over. I can't tell which team dominates when it comes to black support. But the conventional wisdom is that we go for the Sox - likely b/c of the South Side thing. So I'm still a bit surprised when I encounter black Cubs fans (like South Sider Michelle Obama and her family, for example).

fuck you.

Yep. A lot of older ( like 50 and up) black folks are cub fans because of Billy Williams and Ernie Banks, etc.

But for people our age and younger, it's usually whichever team you saw at your first big league game.

Like mentioned above, there are usually geographic or family reasons behind who your squad is. But are there really spots where the split is heavily black & white (or latino or Asian)?

Clippers vs. Lakers?
Mets vs. Yankees?
Jets vs. Giants?

I've been a Laker fan since we transplanted out here from Flint, MI. I still love the Pistons tho. Magic and Isaiah's rivalry was my little 8yr old life playing out on the court LOL
