I imagine he had an impediment of some sort as a child or teen and he developed or was coached into those movements as a means to compensate when his words failed his emotions. Basi sort of "physical emoting" shit that is preached in toast masters or high school communications/speech classes. There is a very limited library that each movement is connected to.
