"Pastor caught naked in affair apologizes to congregation "

This is some masterful pimp game here. He turned himself into the victim.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2017/01/31/a-pastor-wrote-a-book-about-being-a-better-man-weeks-later-he-was-caught-naked-in-an-affair/?utm_term=.0bd027c68759

A pastor wrote a book about being a better man. Weeks later, he was caught naked, in an affair.

Pastor O. Jermaine Simmons stood before his congregation and asked for forgiveness. But he also tried to reconcile the man his parishioners had known for a decade with the adulterer being laughed at in church circles and the media.

Since he took over as pastor in 2005, more than 4,000 people had joined Jacob Chapel Baptist Church in Tallahassee. It had added 27 ministries, focusing efforts on the homeless in Florida’s capital and ministering to youth.

And Simmons had just released his first book, “I Need a Man,” a Bible-based paperback on modeling “Godly manhood.”

Then Simmons’s affair with another man’s wife went public in dramatic fashion: On Jan. 17, the 36-year-old pastor — a married father — found himself cowering naked behind a fence, hiding from a gun-toting husband who’d stumbled on the affair, police say.

“What I want from God, I have already received — that’s his forgiveness, ” Simmons told his congregation five days later.

The Jan. 22 message was recorded by someone in the audience and uploaded to YouTube, where it has been viewed nearly 50,000 times.

“What I am asking of our members is your prayers and your forgiveness,” he said.

According to a Tallahassee police report, officers were called to the Sienna Square Apartments by a woman who said her husband had a gun — and was looking for her lover.

The naked man behind the fence was Simmons, who was also her pastor, she told officers.

She wasn’t sure where her husband was.

But she knew he was angry — and armed.

The pastor had come over to the woman’s house to “talk over starting a business, patents and trademarks, and providing less fortunate kids with clothes and shoes,” she told officers, according to the police report.

Instead, they ended up in her daughter’s bed, having sex, police said.

That same day, the woman’s 6-year-old son had gotten sick at school. Administrators couldn’t reach the woman, so they called her husband instead.

He picked up the sick child and headed home — where he found his wife cheating with their pastor, police said.

“The man yelled ‘I’m gonna kill him’ and went to their room and got a small handgun,” according to the police report.

Simmons ran out of the apartment naked and hopped a privacy fence behind some shrubs, the report said.

But his car keys and his clothes were inside the house with the woman and her enraged husband.

She tried to calm her husband down.

“She stepped in front of (her husband) and pled with him not to shoot Simmons in front of their son,” the report said. But the man “pushed past (his wife) and went out the door in search of Simmons.”

Unable to find the pastor, the husband came into the apartment and grabbed the discarded clothes. He told his wife he planned to drop them off at the church or expose the religious leader on Facebook, the report said.

Maybe, he said, he would show up at church Sunday to make a statement.

But authorities say he cooled down.

A parishioner gave the pastor a ride from the apartment, and police later helped him retrieve his clothes and car, the report said.

Police elected not to charge the husband, saying he never pointed a gun at the pastor or his wife, who said she never felt threatened he would shoot them.

But by that Sunday, the story had spread. And Simmons found himself making a statement of his own.

“I’m hurting because I’ve hurt you,” Simmons told the church on the video recorded by a parishioner. “I can’t speak to people on the outside. I am not Tallahassee’s pastor. I am not Florida’s pastor. I am Jacob Chapel’s pastor.

“It hurts me that you have to defend my actions. You cannot defend sin.”

The congregation responded with loud applause.

Simmons could not be reached for comment this week, and he’s been silent on Twitter since the day he got caught having an affair.

dude played a part in potentially ruining someone's marriage.
likely put a stain on some young Black kids childhood, which will likely leave a lasting impression on him regarding his mom AND all Black women in general...

Could have potentially led to another Black man in the prison system....

Likely turned folks away from even being down with church at all anymore....

I dunno...I just don't think it should be as simple as you've put it.

All of it just reeks to me. And it's always the same ol "no man is christ" response.... but dude IS voluntaringly putting himself on a higher moral ground than the folks he's ministering to.... and he should be held to a higher level of accountability and punishment. They should at least reduce his salary or something..... but you are right, it's up to them... I know if EYE was deacon out that joint, dude would be on the bench indefinitely.....

obviously

my boy is a pastor. The stories he tells me are crazy. Women lust after these pastors so it's easy money to ask for forgiveness. I bet half the women in that church forgive him because they want their blessings.

I mean.. if you can talk a person into donating money they don't have then it's pretty easy to get them to do anything else you ask...

in the name of jesus of course.

Watching that video did not present the picture of a repentant man to me....it was a man with the knowledge of just how much more shit he can get away with in the space that he's ruling (ie, his church)

put people they respect on pedestals. The onus is on the folks up hight to make sure they don't take advantage of people's trust and admiration.

Who knows WHAT was going on in the woman's marriage. Not an excuse for HER...but as her moral guide, he should be one of the few folks to be aware of her home situation and whether they were a danger to each other or not.

By 36 years old, if you really about that faithfultoyourwife life, you recognize quickly when someone of the opposite (hell or same I guess) sex is gonna be a problem for you to be closer than an arms length away from. And you should move accordingly.

assess whether:
1. I've moved on and resolved myself of the burden of anger towards a person and their actions.
2. Prepared myself to fully explain to them how their actions affected me and why they need my forgiveness and when/how/why I'm going to be able to forgive them.
3. The person deserves my forgiveness any sooner than the preceding has occurred.

>What? It's sad because people chose not to hold a grudge?

I think it's sad because I doubt people have had the time to thoroughly evaluate the full implications of his actions and the impact on their group. My understanding of the timeline (and I could be wrong) was that he was back in the church the Sunday after this went down. And that video doesn't really convey to me whether they're all on board with his return, so yeah there's that too I admit.

>What's the date or time period, evaluation period for when
>forgiveness begins?

It's case by case, Case

just like I described to you. I rolled up into Sunday service oblivious to the drama that was to unfold that day......

I stuck around for a while and watched a lot of people's foundations crumble around them because of all the faith and trust they put into a man that let them down over some familiar strange.... The Black Church structure is really much deeper than a lot of folks want to acknowledge. And when the leader of that structure falters, the broken foundation has long lasting affects.

I don't fck with church like that anymore to this very day off the strength (or weakness) of what I witnessed way back then.

we all have fuckin struggles. It kinda burns me though, because I've seen a church fall apart...first hand because of the Pastor and some issues with family that divided the church into sides, pretty much. Some people left church altogether like "I can see this kind of shit out in the world...what I need church for?". Again, humans fuck up...but people who feel they have been called to lead get the extra responsibility that comes with that. This dude fucked one of his followers in her home on her child's bed. So reckless.

Why? Because there's a difference between being bother an just gossiping. You don't give to craps about that congregation of anyone involved. You just want to spit commentary. So if you'r so bothered write a letter or go pay the congregation a visit and tell them what they should do.

>being murdered by police shouldn't bother me...because they

But you sure gave a hefty opinion. But again, if the congregation has moved on, what's your beef? I think what he did is horrible. I also think that is response was in line with the word. I hope that he puts some best practices in place to prevent this form ever happening again. So eh, I'm good. Why aren't you good?

if the woman's son hadn't gotten sick and the husband had to be called to pick him up because they couldn't locate her...they would have finished their "meeting" and probably continued fucking. Or the good Rev. prolly would have found someone else in the congregation to "help out". When though, would he have "dealt with his mess"?

You don't know if he would have been convicted during or after committing an adulterous act. but what YOU DO KNOW is that he HAS Repented and is dealing with the fallout. So, that's what matters.

No one has time to play the shoulda-woulda-maybe-game. FACTS! Facts is all we have in this case.

No one is saying that's the correct response but when you are married to someone, pouring every drop of your being into that person, and then she fucks the pastor who is supposed to be reinforcing the principles that govern your union? That will generally elicit an abnormal response

is fighting the best response, no

I marathon the shit out of Snapped on Sundays when it's not football season. Crime of passion murders usually get kicked down to voluntary manslaughter...but you ain't walkin like Atillah said. Saw one where dude was having an affair. Wifey confronted the mistress and tried to throw hands with her. Hotel workers escorted her out. She waited in her car. When dude and ol girl came out, she ran him down with the Benz...repeatedly...with their daughter in the passenger seat. Her lawyer tried to claim C.O.P...they hit her with that 1st degree because she kept running dude over.

I had a huge fight with my SO in Philly cause I got caught slipping. Neighbors thought it was some other shit because she threw a few items.

Cops showed up at my door, asked a few questions and and left.

Here is the crazy part. She had a burn on her arm from cooking so it looked really bad on my part and if she was really grimey she could've lied and fucked my whole world up.

yall need to stop with this bullshit.

IMO you gotta make your choice regarding your marriage right there on the spot....ain't no half in or half out.
Then you gotta make a choice about YOUR future.
Putting yourself at risk of being locked up isn't putting much thought into YOUR future.

The emotional toll marriage takes from people is enormous, for both women and men, we spend all of our lives giving everything to our partner, even if they don't appreciate it, and cats in here talking about "why you mad" if your wife cheats on you?

Is it rape? Nope, then why you gonna fight him? I'm not saying you should hit a woman or fight dude. But She's the one that you made the covenant with. She's the one that let a dude in the house, took him to the room, and opened her legs.

So who you really mad at? This may not even be her first time cheating..

Of course the locks were "changed months ago and she must have forgot her key." Getting a divorce lawyer on the phone ASAP to make sure I don't do anything that would screw me later on. Calling up a homey or family member to smoke a blunt with me and make sure I don't do any dumb shit.

The goal is to cut that broad off as quickly and cleanly as possible, without as little personal loss as possible.

I mean she did open the door, take him upstairs, take her clothes off, open her legs and the rest is history. You can't blame him alone. Although I believe that he should not have put himself on that situation to be tempted or compromised. But why fight him when it was the wife that brokered the event and broke the covenant?

Yeah the Pastor is dead wrong, but you ain't in a covenant with him.

ALL of that is true, But I was raised not to hit women. (Her fate would be much worse, actually). AND, he's a man of the cloth, and he disrespected, me, my wife, my house, and most importantly, the God he's supposed to serve ( and swore a vow to ).

A man who sleeps with your wife in YOUR house is basically saying : "you ain't shit, and I don't respect you". So i'mma show him otherwise. By whipping his ass.

Like it's all good and all to say that you'd be whooping ass all over the place, but honestly.....

I'd be devastated. I'd be angry and hurt and probably lob more than a few threats and curse words around- but in this situation where you got kids involved? Last thing I need is to be in jail.

If I managed to not hurt anyone, I'd got blow off steam. Come back. Tell wifey she needs to leave for a few days. Weigh my options. Look at myself in the mirror, then get about the business of getting my life right.

Only thing I'd want to ensure is my place in my kid's lives, whether me and wife divorce or not. Everything else is secondary. But I'd probably start cutting ties with the church, the congregation, and the wife's family as far as possible.

Make sure I take care of myself and my own mental well being so I can make it through the tough shit to come, focus on my kids and protect my dough.

you should tread carefully with statements like that.

Do you think the phrase "let us go down and confuse their language" at a time when there was only one language and one religion that somehow an account written 1000 to 2000 years after the phrase was literally written in stone escaped that judgement?

that was a bait question about who wrote the bible so my apologies, but being that the bible is a collection of remixed and white washed accounts. Once you know the source texts it's nature becomes clear.

And for the record, I fully believe that the Pastor violated the sacred trust of the family, church, and community. But that does not absolve the wife in this matter. I am going to turn my theses into a book (I've been asked by professors) because too many pastors have failed to put proper boundaries in place to assist with avoiding these encounters. Also, too many pastors do not understand the psychological imprinting, vulnerability, and trust that people experience with spiritual leaders. And many pastors (male and female) find themselves in an unintended compromising situation. It's a real problem that can be avoided if understood and recognized.

I said all of this because I need to be clear. The Pastor was DEAD WRONG, but the wife carries just as much burden for violating her marriage.

but she's not the one leading the church

this shit is an epidemic and it's common in all areas where men typically hold more power than women but it being so prevalent in religious congregations should be reason enough to diminish the violators powers...

he violated his own marriage, violated theirs, and exploited his position...that's easily forgivable but not excusable as a leader...we impeached a president for similar acts, would forcibly remove just about any CEO whereas this pastor can continue in his exact same position...that's extremely problematic because it basically normalizes it

It's not an epidemic in the egregious organization so Stop exaggerating.

Yup. He did violate is marriage and so did she. And Presidents are only impeached by the opposition party trying to make political gains and CEO's are only removed if the the stock price drops. But that's the difference between the CALL and a JOB.

Still in this case if the congregation forgives then its no of our business.

a.)false...CEOs have been dropped for exploiting their position regardless of the stock

b.) how in the world can you not see how silly it is that a CEO can lose his position but a pastor keep his once he's been known to exploit his congregation...you keep wanting to make her seem equally wrong when the fact is...he's exploiting his position in addition to doing all those things she's guilty of doing...it's also been noted that he and others like him tend to form patterns of such behavior

I clearly hold the Pastor with extreme blame, but I hold the wife with extreme blame too. Both violated trust.

I blame the pastor for not using wisdom, good judgement, and honoring the trust of the community. I blame the wife for violating her vows and the trust of her husband.

What part of that do you have a problem with?

I hold the pastor responsible for violating the expectations and trust of being a pastor and a husband.

You're trying equalize their culpability. The very nature of the balance of their relationship negates that.

Sins my be equal in GOD's eyes, but that's a different plane.

It's a very valid and necessary thing to assess the balance of of blame when dealing on our level as humans though. To NOT do so just sets everyone up for repeated failure.

To consistently push and assert that the woman was EQUALLY responsible and at fault here is just flat out wrong because it ignores the power dynamic at play. Similar to a teacher/student relationship....

You seemed to be very pressed to push and balance out the faults here....IMO, there's no balance of fault on a HUMAN scale. A divine scale yes, I'll concede that...

it's not like Jesus would talk about offering that woman forgiveness and scolding those of us who seek to punish that woman by reminding us that we all have sinned as she has sinned and none of us are better than her and his offer of salvation applies to her as much as it applies to us and he is willing to forgive her as he forgives each of us. i mean, i could be wrong b/c i'm not as much a scholar of Jesus as the rev. so maybe he's right in doing what he's doing here.

though i recall Jesus said som'n about us treating as each other as he treats us...or som'n. or doing to others what we want him to do for us. which sounds to me like we should be concerned w/forgiving that woman as we'd want to be forgiven if we'd sinned against God and broken the vows of our marriage. and of course, ultimately whatever is going on in that marriage is between God and the spouses and not none of us are involved so who are we to speak on what's going between those parties? we should just hope she sought God's forgiveness and her husband's and the husband can find it in his heart to forgive her and that the family heals b/c we have enough broken families and broken homes out in the world. especially since there is at least one child involved here. we should pray for healing here and not celebrate destruction or fantasize about the violence we would inflict on her or the pastor if we were involved.

but again, i'm not a scholar like rev.

he's doing the Lord's work here.

b/c the pastor here doesn't need defending. he's already been forgiven by God and it seems his congregation has forgiven him. that sounds like a done deal.

as opposed to laying blame on both.

b/c you're here making sure we blame the wife and not just the pastor.

so the more you harp on the "BOTH" thing the more you feed my point.

again - what matters most is that BOTH are subject to God's gift of salvation. that God will offer forgiveness to both. that both have sinned and come short as all of us have sinned and come short. and that with repentance both can access salvation.

but i differ to you as a scholar. i'm a mere sinner.

why he needs to step down or be booted out. My comments focused on that facts around his response to the congratulation and that of the community's willingness to forgive him. In addition, I focused on the fact that the were two who violated the aspects of trust.

If you noticed I first response focused on his sin, his fall, conviction, and repentance.

Now, I don't know what that lady has done to recover her marriage, or her violation of God's institution of Marriage. If she repented then she will be forgiven. I can't say what she deserves because that's all up to God.

But for the record God does love us all and that's why his Son Jesus died on the cross for our sins.

I have nothing to boast about but I've been a believer in a Creator of All Things since before you were a Muslim. Everything I've said to you in this post is the truth in part due to my faith being in the truth which is in the Creator.

A sign of truth is that it shakes our faith and I have had mine thoroughly shaken (and thus strengthened) to the point that I can clearly see the lack of knowledge and understanding in your statements.

On the roof of a dwelling where Batanash was bathing Enki by her loins took hold, he kissed her, his semen into her womb he poured.

From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her.

In response to Reply # 238

Through Jesus right?

So if the bible's source material states that humans exist due to the interference of the Elohim which is a Hebrew plural feminine word and that they were expelled from Eden for having been given the ability to procreate then how is man responsible for sin being in him and in the world?

He is not and neither is woman. Yet pastors are teaching man is responsible for his nature and that a woman first led him astray right? By eating a piece of fruit.

So if the oldest accounts state that man played no role in his nature being what it is how is it that Jesus died for those sins? And how can we be forgiven for that which we did not play a hand in?

To some of your remarks

"Now, I don't know what that lady has done to recover her marriage, or her violation of God's institution of Marriage."

so which god are you referring to here? It's "let us" (i.e. the Elohim said let us make man in our image) so which Elohim?

If she repented then she will be forgiven. I can't say what she deserves because that's all up to God.

Is it? The source texts say man was created by ever increasing amounts of the Elohim physical essence (using our modern understanding what could physical essence possibly be?) being inserted into man so that would mean some of God or rather El is a part of us. So to me that says we have the ability to forgive ourselves because God is literally in us and one must first do what "forgive themselves" in order to truly be forgiven and free right?

But for the record God does love us all and that's why his Son Jesus died on the cross for our sins.

Well The Creator Of All Things Certainly does, but that's not who you're referring to. You're referring to the biblical god who is El head of the Elohim aka An or Anu head of the Annunaki. The Elohim are not immortal, all knowing, everywhere, or perfect and it is their image in which we are made. I can back up all of that.

So now who is Jesus in relation to the Elohim? El's two sons are named Enki(or Ea or Ya) aka Prometheus/The Serpent and Enlil(or Yahweh) aka Zeus/Jupiter -- uh oh. So is Jesus Enki who is the Serpent in the Garden or is he Enlil who never wanted mankind to exist in the first place and wanted the flood to wipe us all out? If Jesus says in heaven there is no marriage, but the Elohim have sons and daughters and wives -- uh oh we have another problem.

You can pull on that thread or not but there it is.

1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

...but rev is here making SURE we understand the woman is equally mired in sin as the pastor. as if that's the most important thing going on in the story. he missed a wonderful opportunity to bring up one of Jesus's teachings. i mean it's RIGHT THERE.

i wonder if he'd be one of those Pharisees or scribes? i dunno.

There is a BIG difference. A Pastor can give a prophetic word and not be a Prophet. And Yet a Prophet can be a Pastor. But Just being a Pastor does not make you a Prophet.

This is why people need to go to church and Bible Study so that confusion will not happen. Even reading the Bible with discernment and teaching tools will help too.

^^ This is not semantics bro. If you know what's up then you would have responded in kind. I didn't challenge you. You came to me claiming what a prophet is. I asked you a basic question. And I didn't assume anything. I asked a question. You GAVE AND ANSWER. I didn't make you run to the internet and pull some basic links that supported an incorrect response. You did that. Nothing to see here.

Happens every damned day.

They're both wrong for violating their marriages. Their both wrong for violating the word of God. They're both wrong for bringing shame to their names.

And I've never known a pastor (or anyone for that matter) who was perfect. Though he/she should do their best to lead by example, they are human and certainly fallible.

In fact, all pastors that I know and know of have a spiritual father (pastor) to help them in the way they seek to help others.

While you were here in this convo, another pastor somewhere is smangin someone's wife/husband besides his/her own. Rinse, repeat!

And the thought that any leader is perfect or is without flaw is idealistic; not realistic.

If I never saw my pastor or superior officers screw something up or excel at something, I'd have never known what to look out for.

We learn from the best of 'em. Just like we learn from the worst of 'em.
