Uber turned off the surge pricing in NYC to accommodate the demand due to cabbies boycotting rides to JFK.

What say you?

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

I'd download the app just to use it then delete it immediately
I recommend anyone does the same if they're going to continue using Uber
They don't let you turn location services off. So it's always tracking you.
They thing sell that data to government agencies or even think tanks to develop city policy
So when you think of how Amazon or Walmart or Uber are run as businesses do you want to help them (for free) work against things that'll make your life better?

Here's when I deleted the app

they are protesting but might have just got off a flight.

I know the stoppage was for an hour, but if you had to wait for a cab after that you'd probably be looking at a multi hour wait.

Honestly, twitter was a buzzing with pictures of cops forming a battalion line at JFK refusing to let anyone take the train to JFK+arresting anyone who looked at em sideways at Jamaica Station.

While I don't doubt the evilness of UBER (they are patiently waiting to fire everyone on their rolls to replace them with robo-cars), or that they would break a strike in a second...ultimately the world had bigger fish to fry then a bunch of cabbies* whining

*Full disclosure; as a black man in NYC I have a special hatred in my heart for all yellow cab drivers.

**my bad, put cabs instead of trains first time around.

To which I questioned
The cab strike was in protest of the ban as well though

I don't know the ins and outs of what went on in the city at the time, so I'll defer to you all on that. But I contend that the uber fiasco, like many of their others, was about taking advantage out a situation to benefit Uber over anything else.

It's uber (the company) capitalizing off this purposely, that's my beef.
Independent drivers wanting to get out there? Cool. But if Uber the company was for the strike, they wouldv'e turned off surging to dis-incentivize the influx of cars.

MASSIVE overreach when it comes to any sort of protest and hopes that no one notices or explain it away as a public safety issue. And imho much of it is because of laziness...as opposed to making sure the protestors stay in line AND stay safe they would rather fuck with their freedom of speech to rush back home to their starter second families in the BX, lol.

Kinda nuts how they can arbitrarily shut down parts of the public transportation system just because they feel like it

I didn't expect them to do any kind boycott like the taxicab commission. That would be up to the individual drivers.

The concession on surge pricing is them, I believe, trying to avoid some of the PR nightmares they've had before based on surge pricing. They seem pretty hardcore about sticking to their economic principles but they've learned surge pricing during "crises" is hugely unpopular.

The way they deliberately ignore regulations when they move into different markets across the world suggests the owners are on the more conservative/libertarian spectrum of political beliefs.... they're business edge depends on breaking the rules and hoping that public pressure from satisfied customers will allow them to continue doing business.

I dunno if the owners are individually Trump supporters or if they even care about the Muslim ban but I'd bet they're more alike than different when it comes to how much power they think government should have over business (in particular, their business) .

That's it! That's all!

And now everybody is up in arms thinking/believing Uber supports the ban. I've seen nothing supporting that assertion at all. I believe they've taken a stance against the order. Here is an article on their stance...

http://www.businessinsider.com/tech-ceos-respond-to-trumps-immigration-ban-with-concern-calls-for-unity-2017-1

And the CEO has a consistent stand, IMO, against Trump despite being one of 19 or so CEOs who are collaborating with the guy on business matters.

This man is unilaterally dismantling systems of government and causing global chaos.
You're either enabling him or not.

And working with someone is not necessarily enabling them.

I get everyone's pisstivity. I just don't get us losing our shit and not thinking critically through all of this. Gonna be a long four years if we're jumping out of windows every time this numb skull does or says anything.

There is no altering him gameplan. He's doing everything he said he was going to do, and bypassing other branches of government to do so. Laws and governance be damned.

If you think this is only going to be four years then you don't get everyone's "pisstivity". This past week he filed for re-election, doing so before your first midterm is pretty abnormal, doing so within your first week is unheard of, as in never happened.

This makes non profits unable to campaign against him officially and allows me to take in money directly through him and PACS.

We don't have four years, we might not have four weeks to safe what we can. We're on day 9. If your urgency isn't there, fine, but you're doing yourself a disservice by proverbially treating your ebola systems like the common cold.

Somebody has the knife. Just saying that we never know who can get close to him and get in his ear enough.

I'm watching dude like a hawk but I'm not hating his supporters and not deleting an Uber account because some entertainer posted some asinine comment with a hashtag involved.

I'm hopeful that in the next two we have enough people go out and make sure that Congress is more slanted away from him. And that Congress has folks who are not afraid to speak out against the cat and his minions who are out to rule the world on some Marvin The Martian type steez.

Would be nice if Trump repeatedly blew his own face off though.

I support something Trump related without even trying to. The Girl Scouts supported marching at his parade, am I about to give up buying their cookies? nope

but the episode did end on a kumbayah note probably because Disney (and ABC by extension) is connected to him

I decided to go see what the fuss was about. In no place did I find that he supports Trump or that he has explicitly communicated support for the POTUS.

The sheeple began deleting their accounts without having read a damned thing of substance to support their action other than a tweet and or FB/IG post. Shit's ridiculous!

Sadly, this is the same way that Trump's followers, by and large, got their info and decided to support him.

Damned shame that, collectively, the adults in this country don't have the critical thinking skills or common sense that the good Lord gave a billy goat.

or does it send a message to Uber while increasing Lyfts stock?

A week from now most people will be back on Uber.

I appreciate the energy but I think folk need to be careful. Every week or few days it's gonna be delete this, buy that, support this, boycott that, these apps are cool because they just tweeted support.

I doubt if they even know what Uber is about in the sticks of the Midwest (Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, etc.) or the swamps of Louisiana/Mississippi.

Neither Trump nor his team give a damn either.

if being seen as being allied with trump hurts their bottom line, better believe they won't do so publicly. This is especially relevant because one of trumps tactics is going to be to get businesses friendly to him to publicize every job they create so he can slap a MAGA sticker on it.

Because their end goal isn't drivers, it's self driving and automation.

Which is against what's good for the environment, against accessibility for the poor/ elderly that can't do everything digitally, against public transportation which provides jobs for minority, against regulations and taxes which benefit the public infrastructure for people.

Uber may have a short term benefit. But it is still the enemy. And they're not just in the business of easy rides. They'll do whatever it takes to get "stuck" in bigger markets.

Similar to how the isps own the telecoms even though taxes paid for the building of that infrastructure.

I have been iffy on Uber for a while... I used it cuz.. well convenience...

I deleted the App (not account yet) because I thought Travis' statement was toothless. Uber is actively trying to eliminate its drivers by investing heavily in self driving cars because those silly human things that sit behind the wheel cost too much.

“Travis had an idea that he wanted to do self-driving,” says John Bares, who had run CMU’s National Robotics Engineering Center for 13 years before founding Carnegie Robotics, a Pittsburgh-based company that makes components for self-driving industrial robots used in mining, farming, and the military. .....The goal: to replace Uber’s more than 1 million human drivers with robot drivers—as quickly as possible."

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-08-18/uber-s-first-self-driving-fleet-arrives-in-pittsburgh-this-month-is06r7on

While the idea of Uber was revolutionary (even though Lyft did it first) the idea that you can "work" 60 hours a week for the same company (not multiple companies) and have no benefits shouldnt be commended.

They are on Walmart status with me currently. I dont shop there because of their policies on unions and how they treat their employees and the communities they inhabit.

who was about to move to the Bay Area because she'd accepted a nice gig with Uber. She asked me what my one complaint would be.

I told her that I had none. I then asked her what most drivers were saying. She said that they complained mostly about the hours they had to work to make a significant chunk of change. I told her that I didn't think of Uber in that way and that it was just a way to make extra coins.

According to her, it was never the intent for drivers to be out there 40 to 60 hours per week because it was meant to just help people make extra money. it was never intended to be a full-time gig for anyone. If I was on the road for more than 20 hours per week, it was because I wanted to hustle more dough instead of sitting in the house doing nothing. That was on me; not them.

Sure but when you boast as a "job creator":

"Uber CEO Travis Kalanick laid out an ambitious agenda for the following year. “In 2015 alone,” he wrote on the company’s blog, “Uber will generate over 1 million jobs in cities around the world.”

You have to provide some basic job benefits... if you are gonna claim job creation... thats all

I do believe so which means they are accurate about creating jobs. The thing is... A contractor gets to set his/her own hours. That's the main benefit IMO. It was a job that afforded me the opportunity to make extra dough on my own time when I felt like it.

People know what they're signing up for before they do it. I figured the game out and started sitting at the airport to take advantage of folks needing rides that would generate a nice chunk of change for me. I had days where I made $150 in four hours just by targeting the airport.

In response to Reply # 50

I work a full time gig and it was just a few hours here and there and unless I got a good ride it wasn't possible to make a few coins.

if you could see the amount you would make when selecting a trip it would change the game.

full-time gig with benefits in my chosen field. Some days, i wanna go out there and hustle a couple of dollars. The desire to go home to my lady or do other things is more appealing after having dealt with the stress of a day in the office.

Nevertheless, being out there for yourself through Uber was never meant to be anyone's sole stream of revenue. if it is, one has to recognize that you've got things to handle on your own as an independent contractor. No different than being one in IT.

Anyone can drive, not everyone can design. I rather spend more time at home freelancing and grinding then driving white folk around.

Plus it takes too much time to make good money. its not consistent.

Some quick extra cash, do a few hours after work and have an extra $100 or $200 a week.

If I didn't have kids or quit my job I would definitely do it as a stop gap.

I value my time with my family more than a few coins.

showing it was never about morals but fear of the others.

Trump supporters mollywopping on women peacefully protesting all last year like, 'THEY WERE INSTIGATORS, THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THERE'. Suddenly a nazi gets a two piece during the protests and they are like, *cry*, 'that was unfair, what about free speech'

Fuck them niggas. Shame the fuck outta them.

Just tell me what you think of the others that went in that booth and pulled that lever or pushed that button to elect this dude.

For the most part, I'm with you on all of this. I don't care to read their comments nor learn of their frustrations with the BS that's coming their way now.

Engaging with a voter or two of his in a conversation is not something I'm above if they wanna really talk. Otherwise, I'm not for the fuck shit.

My boss voted for Trump. His FATHER and uncle left Nazi Germany on a Kindertransport as little boys. His grandparents were killed in the Holocaust. My boss's wife was born in Australia, but her parents -- his IN-LAWS -- were born & raised in IRAN and are now here, on green cards until very very recently.

I can't believe he would do such a thing. He says it's because Trump would be better for the economy and he says WAIT AND SEE DON'T JUDGE TOO QUICKLY.

My job is unraveling and I'll be unemployed in a few weeks and you know what? I'M GLAD because I have zero respect left for this guy with whom I've worked for 10 years.

I'd literally have to delete all my apps, throw my phone in a landfill, and live in the woods off posion ivy and honeysuckle in order to protest all the big biz that are in the same room as Trumps and nem

The NYC taxi drivers had an hourlong work stoppage in honor of the protests....Uber immediately seized on that as an opportunity to make money. They undermined the protests by doing that....the founder of Uber is sitting on one of Trump's boards.....at the exact same time, Lyft announced that they were donating 1 million dollars to the ACLU over the next 4 years.

deleting the Uber app doesn't do much except not be on your phone....Uber still has you as a registered user....so delete your account and then you can write them why you are doing so.
