"What was the prototypical RnB album that shaped todays sound?"

I've been trying to figure out how we went from live instrumentation that at times referenced soul and blues to the softer side of things.

we went from coarse to refined.

Pardon my ignorance, I'm not the biggest contemporary RnB head but when I listen to Sam Cooke and then Jaheim I'm like

"How did we get here? What albums were game changers?"

What was the album that shaped modern RnB?

Was it Marvin Gaye's 'Midnight Love'?

Everyone was trying to make their own version of that album until 1995.

Then, D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" changed R&B until about 2004 with everyone trying to make their version of that and which also spawned the explosion of neo-soul.

Then Usher's "Confessions" had everyone making their version of that album and trying poorly with a few exceptions...shit, that even influence Drake who ultimately influenced R&B starting with So Far Gone up until today even though he ain't really "Singin' Drake" no more.

So Far Gone then expounded on Confessions and spawned all this really chill shit like The Weeknd, Tiller, Lanez, etc. that we have now.

those are kind of the milestones in my opinion.

adult RnB included Anita Baker, Luther, Freddie Jackson, Alexander O'Neal... and can't forget Hall n Oates.

Mid 80's was Prince, Madonna and MJ, Cameo even tho they straddled RNB and Pop/Rock...

before that was Stevie, Isley Brothers, Smokey, Motown sound...

I can't think of the major albums tho...

Remember when every song had a horn or keyboard solo?

They replaced it with a rap verse... that was the beginning of the change.

Crazy Sexy Cool, Mary J, Jodeci

I miss real RnB tho...now even the down tempo white girls are cursing on the hook.

influence on R&B this decade. I feel he's why most songs are more atmospheric than melody driven, why singers use rap cadences, why most songs have a Trap feel more than a traditional slow jam drum feel, why so many songs sample 90's rap and R&B but Trap them out, and even some influence content wise. Take care and So far gone were HUGELY influential to this decade, for better or for worse.

the biggest trait of Drake is that he almost NEVER harmonizes ANYTHING in his vocals..

the (popular) R&B industry fell in line and said fuck it...we don't have to harmonize shit either.

808s and Heartbreaks.... Then refined with So Far Gone..

Kanye's shift w/ 808s changed the entire landscape pop to RnB.. There is no FUN!, Lana Del Rey etc.. w/o it. But Drake and 40s synthesis of it on So Far Gone and Thank me Later is what the Blueprint is.... 808s, Lofi instruments, effected vocals, flattened vibrato ..

Technically:

Cudi, Consequence, Esthero, Mr Hudson all ad a hand in making that album what it was lyrics wise but it's really Plain Pat drums, Emile, Jeff Bhasker & Ye production that get you what you hear now.

Drake's most influential sonic addition during So Far Gone time was the flattening of the vibrato in Melodyne. 40 wasn't just correcting notes he was pulling out the movement of the voice in the note. It created this interesting deadpan almost delivery that people copy by just trying to "sound like drake" and put autotune on it but it isnt the same..

The shift from live instruments happened a long ass time ago though (the 80s).. unless you are referring to the Neo Soul, Philly based period of the 2000s.

I am still waiting for the real discussion on "Drake's vocal influence on the white rapper" though. He quietly is the new Eminem, Atmosphere, Beastie boy

New Jack Swing Era - Bobby Brown, Guy

Started taking advantage of the newer sounds where the instruments got replaced but still firmly recognizable.

Hip-Hop & R&B Hybrid- Jodeci, Mary J Blige, R. Kelly

Hip-hop came and as opposed to using electronic sounds that behaved similar to organic instruments we went straight into beat world with music that couldn't.

We hovered here for a couple of decades where it felt hip-hop and R&b were interchangeable during much of the pollination period. The current era though?

Dream for much of the melodic ideas
Weeknd for the atmosphere
Drake for the vocal syncopation

Or are you just trying to give Andre credit because he's 3000?

Sure, maybe it influenced rappers who can't sing to sing but that's about it.

I always said that D and Lauryn were harbingers of modern black music; whenever they'd reelase something, the rest of their peers too k notes.

Since BM's late 2014 release, a slew of albums have came out as a direct or indirect reaction or result:

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly
Beyonce's Lemonade
Solange's A Seat at the Table
Blood Orange's Freetown Sound
Jamila Woods' HEAVN
Alicia Keys' Here
Common's Black America Again
Frank Ocean's Blonde
Theo Croker's Escape Velocity

The list goes on...

It was a combo of Don't Be Cruel and OTW/Thriller. And that seems like the last 'huge' R&B record to me.

Mix that with some So Far Gone and that's a rock that can hit the hell out of lots of recent R&B. I get how heavy 808s was but So Far Gone is easier to ape without taking it full Phil Collins.

I wanna believe that lots of folks were listening to Dream's Love/Hate and said 'shiiiiid, I can do that!?', but I'm not so sure.

It's wild to me how much Aaliyah and Jodeci come up now, but I put that on Drake's street-team level hyping of them.
