"Y'all mess with whosampled.com"

I had no idea EPMD sampled I shot the sheriff for Strictly Business until today. Maybe I heard it way back then but somehow it all felt new this time when I heard Bob Marley on the radio. They used Eric Claptons version tho...

Prolly heard it hundreds of times but never stepped back. I pride myself on catching samples too. Smh

Also recently heard the Jackson Sisters "I believe in Miracles" horns in PE's I can't do nothing for ya.

Not good enough to hear some shit chopped and reversed filtered tho...

I don't know how this one got past me. I blame all the weed I smoked while listening to Marley in college.

Is that when everyone "really" listens to Bob? In college? lol...

All you hear is Jammin', One Love, Three Little Birds and that's "over-saturation"...

The only reason for that is that most people can't name another reggae artist

Also, besides the 1978-1996 classics, I don't care who sampled what. Always kills me when folks comment on YouTube songs like "Lil' Sticky Beats sampled this!" lol, like who gives a fuck about what Lil' Sticky Beats sampled?

Shit from the 50's, 60's and 70's...

I found a cut that was beautiful but I can't remember it and I'm still digging for it. Wish I put it aside.

My dad and my aunts old collection. Dusty as shit so I can only listen to a few at a time.

...a microfiber cloth. I try to avoid the label and clean only the vinyl. Might not be the best way, but usually any record that I have that's dirty enough to need cleaning isn't that valuable anyway. I don't clean the covers at all (I'll toss them if they are too far gone).

in the back of my head whenever I browse that site. It is pretty stellar for the service it provides though. There was/is another site that did something similar in text only format; I believe it is the-crates.com if memory serves me right. I wonder how salty the cat behind that site is now that whosampled.com expanded upon his idea.

I submitted a sample reference about a year or two ago; just went out on a web/YouTube search for the sample source by searching for the sampled hook since I figured it was the name of the original song and I didn't see it submitted on the site. Roughly a week or two after I submitted the source, it was posted on the site.

I fell into a rabbit hole with that site a few weeks ago after I stumbled into Let's Play House (aka source for Humpty Dance) during a Parliament/Funkadelic album listening run.

I love that site. It is occasionally 'missing' stuff but there's a lot to dig into fo sho.

I have one for this:

https://open.spotify.com/user/promo206/playlist/3RyaqnSgaJ94p60VvX0nZW

230 tracks so far (adding all the time) of Classic Soul, Funk, Disco & Groove...almost all of which you'll recognize as being sample in SOMETHING.

Shit, I'm adding tracks to it as I type up this post.

Follow, throw it on shuffle and enjoy.

I did the SAME THING. But I'm a psycho, so I have multiple different playlists for different era to try to make it 'flow' better. AND I have certain lists for specific artists who have samples that I particularly enjoy having together. It's like 75% done and it's already pretty jamming.

or my ear gets fatigued too fast.

like, i can't just listen to 10 electro funk songs in a row because those sub-genres have such a specific sound that too many songs in a row just start to blend together.

that's just me though. some people hate the mix up of styles but it's all from the same tree to me.

33. "yea, I used to note samples in the "comments" section of iTunes data"

I don't do that anymore now that I have less free time but still add the same amount of music to iTunes on average per week, but it is nice to be able to pull up a playlist of 334 songs that sample James Brown, or whittle that down further, and I have WhoSampled to thank for a lot of that info.

Maybe I should pick the hobby back up...lol.

Honestly, some people just don't have access to a crate of records or a good record shop to go digging. Or if a particular sample is stuck in your head and you can't quite place where it's from, it works. Then you can go back, find the album and give that a listen (and use that as a jumping off point to expand your musical knowledge library)

At the same time, it's hard to beat the feeling of finding a sample organically. There have been a few times I've been in a restaurant or had the ipod on shuffle and heard an old sample out of the blue
