these niggas don't know wtf they talking about... they old and hateful.

He sells a shit load of records without guest artist and his message is dope as shit.

Only issue I have with Cole is his cursing. Sometimes it sounds forced.

I really don't understand why either. From the first time I heard him it stood out to me. I wish the brother well. Happy he's carved out a nice wide lane for himself. I'm not a fan but he doesn't need me to be.

I love oddisee and the fact that his current music is free of curses.

I don't trip too hard on the curses from anderson or other artist as my kids know what they can't say out loud.

they are gonna curse eventually and they will learn it on their own outside of what they hear from us or our speakers.

My only real gripe with him is that he's the same artist from the first mixtape to the latest album. Which isn't a bad thing, but it def puts him lower on the list for me for these new artists. I know what to expect from a Cole album. The growth isnt that much since we first heard him

Its a fair statement. He's still dope. But he CAN be very boring if you listen to his whole discography. Its pretty much the same album over and over. He's mastered it at this point, no question...but do you think this album is gonna be much different than the last 2?

I could see if he had sleepy raps or sleepy beats but dude has content in his rap and he has nice beat selection

It's the weirdest diss of all time. Especially when he consistently goes plat all by his damn self.

Maybe thats why he is boring to some people.

I live in NC tho so when I see crowds, people react or see my young fam get hype when he drops I just come to the conclusion some people bet against him and can't accept he proved them wrong.

the forest hills show was so fucking dope. don't know how anyone could think otherwise if they went. i don't get it. especially here. he's so playery, but this place has become way less playery i guess. and fuck that, i say playery as a compliment, not a diss (but i do get the joke, but we don't even really have those far left playery folks around anymore).

dude makes good if not great music *shrugs*

When he came to Charlotte there was a dude who road the bus from WVA to see him. Young girls buying up hotel rooms and shit just to see Cole.

I know NC is home but i was still shocked when we went to see Kendrick the first time and he brought Cole out and the place went ham.

30. "I want rappers who have to stick to what they are best at"
In response to Reply # 27

To reaalize that sets your ceiling. But the guys who are top...they can't do that. You have to step out of your comfort zone and be able to do that next "wave" or create that next wave while still doing you and making it authentic.

It's pretty hypocritical to go around knocking people for doing the new sound "imitating" rappers when you can only imitate 90s shit. Old heads or hip hip purists will call it original tho, makes no sense. I like Cole a lot but like I said....at this point I know what I'm getting. He can't make fun of Ye, Hov or Drake for getting help writing the dude doesn't even hit songs, is an after thought to a lot of people...I hate when certain rappers say that. Maybe u should've had help. I think my biggest problem with Cole was that he was too adamant about handling the production and I didn't think he was ready then. He's a lot better at it now especially getting session players involved and it seems that white dude is helping production too. He's not just relying on a sample these days he's actually doing production rather than beat making.

In response to Reply # 16

He's like a capable ass rapper for sure. I'll hear his songs, never want to skip them upon first listen, I'll catch hella dope lines, dope flows, cool beats......and when I'm done, it's absolutely no desire to play it again. It's rarely ever a song where I'm just caught up in it and wish it won't end, and rarely where I play a song of his multiple times.

And radio absolutely burnt the FUCK out of No role modelz and that First time song.

In response to Reply # 28

for this new generation that is gonna be around for the long run the way we had certain artists like that. He and KRIT both have the same problem....amazing artists who are VERY VERY important for this generation...but if im grading them to artists who are at the top...they just cant compete. Their sound is one dimensional...we've seen them try to step out and make their sound bigger. It just hasnt worked yet. I always thought KRIT had a better chance at making those bigger hits but it just didnt pan out.

In response to Reply # 32

I don't get your argument. I could see if he was barely hanging on but he has a big ass fan base. Women like Cole so he is eating good.

First artist to go play with no features in 25 years. I read that on wiki so who knows if it's true..lol.

Point is.. his lane is platinum status and I don't think you can put him on some boring box. I mean, I get it... he doesn't write club bangers but he writes some good songs with a good message and does it without much help.

Like I said earlier, I think a lot of people/critics bet against dude and can't accept that he has a nice mainstream lane and he did it his way.

Nigga was in the WH looking like a bum.

Both were on a major and both have big pushes. But ok.

Nor was i even talking about whether he was major or not. He's still not looked at as one of the top artists in music despite numbers. *shrugs*

Thats my point. He's amazing at what he does...but he's still one dimensonal if we are talking about his artistry or even just a rapper. There's nothing wrong with it at all, but thats what limits him being talked about being bigger than he already is. I honestly don't see him getting bigger than he is. AGAIN it's fine. But i just want that to be acknowleged because its not being acknowledge. You just keep running around that issue and its pretty key when we are talking about who is on top. Lets stop pretending its not a factor.

but as far as what you want acknowledged about Cole.

Seems like that's all people do anytime Cole is brought up. Every other post is a knock on him or a criticism about why he doesn't move them.

Honestly, its a little weird. I know it's a music site so all opinions are welcome but damn, it's like his 3rd album or so and people are still putting in work trying diminish his talent.

Given his content, it seems a little odd.

Just sayin'

Cole does stadiums by himself and has HBO specials...

I'd argue he and K dot exchange 2nd place (To Drake) every time either drops... There are no 3 bigger new gen rap artists tbh..

like he could be any nigga you bump into on the street who raps well enough to be considered great...

his songs aren't really more boring than "jumpman" or any other mindless banger. People don't really want more normal rappers unless they come with a huge side of crazy like Yeezy

It's the same reason someone like Phonte isn't bigger than he is...

luckily, he's had wildly successful singles which keep him plat regardless

i fucks with him but i get the criticism...most people don't care how dope a rapper their next door neighbor is if he isn't pushing boundaries, wrapped up in drama-filled marketing, or some other attention grabbing bs

In fact I feel the opposite in a lot of cases. Boring is not the word that should be used at all for the guys you named. I'd say you can call these MC's unashamed and bold in a lot of ways. Dudes going on and on about material bullshit and fake lifestyles is boring. I like to hear dudes talking about real shit. I like dudes who are skilled and versatile on the mic and making beats. Some dude tried to tell me that KRIT was boring too and I almost lost it.

Give me an example of what is not boring while you're talking about who's boring. I wanna know.

In response to Reply # 37

But I love the ordinary man raps of Phonte and Oddisee etc..

The difference is to me that Phonte has a natural humour, charisma, engaging rap style and emotional profoundness (without the corniness or cliche) that J Cole can't match. Every song I've heard from J Cole sounds forced and stilted.

Has J Cole got rhymes? Undoubtedly yes! But his shit never moves me, or ever makes me think he will join the list of my fave super mc's..

I might be wrong in writing off J Cole (it's only my opinion after all) but the reason I do so is definitely not because because I needs mc's to be doing crazy heists/or trap lyrics on every song.

Lurk everyday.. Post once a month..

he spits like he communicates in general...

i think it's moreso his delivery is fairly BASIC (mostly in tone) is all...so it comes across that way...

Big Sean has an extremely shitty delivery but it's different enough to be at least more polarizing than the everyday sound of J Cole

Cole just spits...that's not enough to most folks though i don't think

Jumpman is 120% all hook (no lyrics), J-Cole has no hooks whatsoever.

Before we fell in love with the current P-Funk singing, Atlanta tv show creating, white girl baby momma having Childish Gambino similar darts were thrown at him for being a bit too every-man.

However, Gambino had hooks.

It doesn't even have to be hooks per say...but something quotable, something that makes you want to press rewind. He's a pure lyricist, but he's got no earworms that stay in your head.

I was kinda hoping for those after False Prophets

Forrest Hills better IMO and still fux with Cole

Why does no one around J. Cole tell him how awful his singing sounds?
The best part of this album is the attention to details. The instrumentals are nice. The keyboards, trumpets, violins, background singers those things are all really dope.
But Cole... just doesn't make me care about the things he's rapping about. And sometimes dude is just heavy handed... lacks subtlety. We don't need the baby crying noises on your track about your baby. We can pick it up on our own. Folding Clothes is cute in concept but dawg, that hook is fucking terrible? "I wanna fold clothes for you" could've been a fine enough line and sentiment, but he goes and makes it into an awful hook. It's not all bad. I like Neighbors, I'd say it's the best track on here. Then he goes an tries to ruin it by singing at the end.

then listen to the Intro off 2014FHD and then come back and give me 5 worse examples of a rapper singing.
Even niggas like Ja Rule and 50 who can't actually sing a lick, stay in their key. Even a nigga like Kanye has the decency to cover his shit up with autotune. Cole tries to actually sing and change his pitch/key and it just results in his voice cracking. The shit is horrendous.

I hate making this comparison, because it's gonna come across as me being a hater or whatever, but I much prefer Cole singing to Drake singing. I honestly can't do Drake singing. I'm cool with him as a rapper, but I can't listen to his singing tracks. Cole is better at both, to me. And I sweatergod I'm not hating and I didn't even wanna make this comparison, but we're talking about rappers singing so I did it haha.

his singing, to me, is honest with emotion. especially those 5 seconds. i will agree that it was not technically great, but that's not his lane. i can feel those 5 seconds. i dig what he does.

but at least i responded to the right guy re: Drake haha. cause i really didn't want it to turn into any of that.

considering it happens every time he tries to sing in a higher pitch than his normal voice. Which is becoming increasingly more common.

I think it's worse than Pharrell's early falsetto. I think it's far worse than Andre's singing, and I don't listen to/like Kid Cudi (but from my memory, he does sound Cole level bad). As I recall, Lupe's singing is terrible too.

The difference between Cole and most of the folks you mentioned -- is that none of them are trying to actually vary their pitch (except in deliberate attempts at humor).

Cole, to me, sounds like he's actually trying to sing. And again, it sounds terrible.

afternoon, but it's pretty perfect to me.
It's like the Hip Hop version of Sade.
All the songs flow well into the next
one. You have your slight highs, but
just very consistent throughout.
After listening, I'm convinced all the
"sleepy" accusations have to do with
the fact that it's just the 'in' thing
to say about him.
Really good album, imo.
Content is VERY on-point, and the music
has a consistent "neo-soul" feel.
I fux with this heavy.

to use this opportunity at this moment in your career to create an album from a dead homie's perspective shows that this dude is an artist. its a very emotional album that for the most part is dark and quite introspective. from what i can gather only "neighbors" and "fold clothes" are told from cole's perspective and the rest is his friend. the title track almost brought tears to my eyes while listening it to last night.

This is about where I'm at. Zoomed out, Cole could stop now and I'd say he lived up to and beyond what I though he could do when he hit me upside the head with Friday Night Lights and it took me 30 minutes to get past the Didn't Cha Know-powered first song.

4 Your Eyez Only...

My eyes went wide when I heard the last song and I realized what I had just heard. Cole had gotten me again. I immediately listened to the whole thing again and thought a lot more of it the second time around with the understanding that it wasn't all about him. It made so much more sense...imagine that!

Of course, it's a helluva gesture and a wild thing to do in a world where most rappers are a sign of the times: that's right, I'm saying many folks are up their own ass and can only think of themselves most of the time.

I'm STILL a sucker for context/stories in music, so something like this was a lock to work on me. If this is what some cats are going to do to try to 'answer' Kendrick's output, I'm cool with it. I bring up Lamar cuz....

This is sing about me: the album.

I love that there's so much music out that I like. 2016 has been something else, but this music shows me that there's something beautiful out there and some of these cats are still giving of themselves in the same way that made us love acts of the past. We can say what we want about the singing and the 'quality' of the rapping but if they get the feeling right, I don't need Eminem-level lyrics.

I bet he sells 300K in NC alone. When he came to Charlotte white girls were copping hotel rooms and driving from across the state to see him. He got that white college demo on lock.

79. "J. Cole’s new identities (SWIPE)"
In response to Reply # 0

I dig the album for what it is... I dig the guy for who he is...He fills his lane as well as anyone else fills theirs. And we all have a lane.

http://theundefeated.com/features/j-coles-new-identities-4-your-eyez-only-new-album/

By David Dennis, Jr. | @DavidDTSS

J. Cole, a musical messiah to many, either struggles to tell compelling stories — or his life is actually boring. 4 Your Eyes Only, J. Cole’s fourth studio album in five years, fails to live up to the promise of his great 2014 Forest Hills Drive, but showcases him perfecting his craft as a storyteller, and striving for emotional potency. The new album, in a twist, tells the linear story of a man — not J. Cole — caught in the streets and trying to preserve his legacy. J. Cole tells the story of a childhood friend who may or may not be a fictional representation of a real friend, and does so without any concern for being popular on terrestrial or satellite radio. The album’s projected to sell more than 400,000 copies in its first week of release.

Eyez is more dry than Forest Hills Drive. That album’s heavy baselines and triumphant horns are replaced on Eyez by subdued snares and softer melodic backdrops. The new album lacks the production highs and anthemic nature of its predecessor’s G.O.M.D. It lacks lyrical onslaughts like those on Drive’s Fire Squad. J. Cole’s new Eyez is simply more boring sonically, even if, to his horde of die-hard fans, the subject matter of police brutality, incarceration, and love excuses the lack of musical excellence — as if enjoyable listens and lyrical depth are mutually exclusive.

In case you haven’t heard, J. Cole went platinum with no features. Forest Hills Drive was produced solely by J. Cole and has no guest verses on the entire album. This is rare. Guest verses are as common in hip-hop as a line about sneakers. But the fact he went platinum — sold more than 1 million albums at a time when this is rare and complicated — with no features has become a meme’d rallying cry for his fans and for people who make fun of his fans’ self-righteousness. Yes, self-righteous: Another common refrain on Twitter and Facebook is, “You need a certain level of intelligence to appreciate J. Cole.”

Here’s the rub: You don’t.

J. Cole’s reputation and success as a rapper who doesn’t celebrate materialism has made him a symbol of cultural elitism for folks who can feel superior to fans of, say, a more simplistic kind of rapper like Lil Uzi Vert. This is a phenomenon J. Cole seems to know about and embrace on the video for Everybody Dies that he released in the lead-up to Eyez. It’s one of two videos included in the Eyez documentary in which he mostly hangs around with friends and makes music, and neither of the two songs made the album. He raps, Lil’ whatever — just another short bus rapper. It’s the type of lyric from J. Cole that demeans popular, supposedly shallow subject matter.

Yet J. Cole fans insist that he’s exempt from making music that’s enjoyable and stirring simply because it has a message. But hip-hop, especially post-Black Lives Matter hip-hop, is full of sonically vibrant, woke music. Killer Mike, T.I., Kendrick Lamar and a whole armada of rappers have emerged to blend mainstream production to lyrics about black liberation. Think songs like Kendrick Lamar’s Alright, and Chance The Rapper’s gospel-infused Coloring Book album and T.I.’s latest mixtape Us Or Else. This is the best of what we have right now. But to J. Cole’s most loyal followers, he’s the only one. J. Cole is an understated producer, usually relying on samples and horns instead of trunk-rattling 808s, but it doesn’t matter what his music sounds like, as long as his message stays “positive.”

Point of fact: the new song, Change. It’s as didactic and corny as anything in his catalog. The reprise, The only real change comes from inside, is the type of lyric, like Big Sean’s One Man Can Change The World, that sounds great as a Facebook status or Instagram meme but sounds like the log-off line of an after-school special. Fortunately for J. Cole, there’s a theme in Eyez that taps into a universal emotion: the fear of mortality that comes with being in love, and having children. More on that, later.

J. Cole was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in a tiny home held together by his mother. He didn’t come up in abject poverty. He didn’t sell drugs to “make it,” or ever really fear for his life. Young Jermaine Lamarr maintained good grades, played basketball and graduated in 2007 (with a 3.8 GPA) from New York City’s St. John’s University. He worked as a bill collector and as a skating rink mascot until his rap career took off. It’s a story far more people can relate to than, say, Lil Wayne’s tales of being a child superstar who almost died after shooting himself in the leg. Or Kendrick Lamar’s stories of police raiding his house to arrest his uncle, or possibly having shot someone at age 16. Or Drake’s gossipy looks at his flings with superstar women around the world.

J. Cole is just J. Cole. And for people who want to listen to a rapper who can tell their stories, he is a messiah. Cole has a dedicated fan base who purchase his albums and send them to the top of the charts with radio requests and streaming. On social media platforms, they defend his every word. This all makes J. Cole’s artistic decisions on Eyez even more interesting.

The concept is first-person narrative told from the perspective of “James McMillan Jr.,” who grew up as a drug dealer. The friend, apparently deceased, lived a loose and fast life full of danger, and becomes concerned about his mortality when he falls in love and has a daughter. So he entrusts his life stories as a kind of last will and testament to J. Cole.

The drug dealer narrative(s) allow J. Cole to achieve two goals: He can color his usually mundane and relatable lyrical content with another person’s exciting stories of street life — and he can also keep fans at arm’s length from his personal life. J. Cole seems to be projecting his own feelings towards his real-life wife onto McMillan’s in Fold Clothes, which has become a hashtag, and in which he screams I want to fold clothes for ya, I wanna make you feel good. He’s presenting emotions — with a buffer.

Yet it is kind of masterful the way he can interweave his own personal story into that of the “friend,” making the differences between their stories imperceptible. For instance, on Neighbors, J. Cole stresses over the real life way he’s treated by his white North Carolina neighbors unaccustomed to seeing young black wealth in their neighborhoods. One thing is for sure though / The fame is exhaustin’, he rhymes over a stripped-down double-time snare. That’s why I moved away / I needed privacy.

It’s that search for privacy that has made J. Cole such an enigmatic figure, as fans clamor for more, decoding lyrics to see how much of his personal life they can glean. He’s kept his girlfriend and subsequent marriage a secret (he was outed accidentally in a January interview with Ryan Coogler), and seems to want to eschew fame. He wears flip-flops and sweatpants to White House meetings. These characteristics, of the elusive, outsider MC, have only endeared him to rabid fans.

A central theme of J. Cole’s Eyez is a self-conscious preoccupation with creative legacy — and staying alive to be around and take care of family. Due to his commitment to personal privacy, and his choice to tell another man’s story in the first person, we have no clue if J. Cole is expecting a child, just had a child or just happens to be thinking about children. Social media are alive with guessing games about his familial status.

But when he tackles the idea of mortality and fatherhood, he becomes as real and relatable as he’s been his whole career. When the Cole-as-narrator finds love in She’s Mine Pt. 1, he addresses his mortality head-on: I don’t wanna die no more. And the title track is peak J. Cole the storyteller slash emotional gut-puncher. In it the narrator pleads with himself, God, and Time about how his daughter will never get to hear the song, and instead he’ll tell her to her face about his life. But, of course, he doesn’t survive his lifestyle and J. Cole is left to deliver the message.

Nah, your daddy was a real n—– , not ’cause he was hard

Not because he lived a life of crime and sat behind some bars

Your daddy was a real n—– cause he loved you

For your eyes only

J. Cole seems to be at a crossroads where he needs to express emotion but still wants to keep a safe distance. Eyez is at its best when J. Cole is stripped-down and raw. But the final track of the album — Not because he screamed, “F— the law” / Although that was true gives hope that a less-calculated J. Cole will be the norm.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
