there is a lot to unpack.

I think you're going to see a large group of people that don't consider this a "Tribe" album, not because it's Q-Tip heavy or anything but just the sound of it.

it definitely isn't a throwback album, it's pretty current.

shows a pretty strong influence from the production styles of Rising Down and ...Shoot Your Cousin on the first two tracks.

it's two discs, not sure if that was in the promotional material, but totals just over an hour (curious to see if the discs have totally different feels).

unless it changes course dramatically, this is going to be their darkest album easily, as well as most dense.

the guitars on this album are clean as fuck.

"Kids..." is a back and forth between Andre and Tip Beastie Boys style except about politics and blackness.

Like...Ionno how I can explain. But you can just tell what he brought to the production on certain joints. And thats def missing on here. I didnt find myself giving a fuck about most of the production nor really breaking my neck.

I feel like "Dis Generation" is the joint where i feel the same as I did when say Love Movement dropped

Gonna keep listening this week tho.

Tribe needed a return to the self-made production style from their first 3 albums. Those Tribe albums benefitted Dilla more than they did Tribe. I love the guy too, but come on man.

the drums, the melodies, the BPMs, the vibes...it's all so true to Tribe.

The DJ in me just wishes they had at least 3-4 TRUE standout songs...like how Amplified had (hell, Amplified had 6-8 standouts to me).

"Kamaal The Abstract" and "The Renaissance" Q-tip type production with all of them as a group on it.

And that's a great thing.

Maybe the reason why there was no lead single prior to dropping.

THat's def my favorite track on the album. I really really connected more with side two, but I only listened once. I'm sure my feelings will change later on.

I like it.

I can't tell YET if/where it would fit in with the other albums. Heck. Is it even supposed to?

Overall I'm enjoying and I did get moments of "oh this def feels like how Tribe should feel in 2016"

at that show way back in the day.

I used to see Jarobi in DC back when we threw shows at State of the Union on U street.

Always wondered why he left the group. He said he wanted to do other things (pretty sure he was a chef at the time) but I wondered if there was more to the story.

It's a compilation IMO.

It has its moments and the first half had me hype but the second half was a disappointment.

It's not bad... but it's not as great as I thought after hearing the first 6 or 7 cuts.

The production on the second half is ... terrible.

It's like Tips ego got in the way and he couldn't stop adding samples to songs that were already good.

Tribe has always been Tip and Phife... this album isn't Tight and Phife and honestly, I was never a fan of QTip as a solo artist.

Dis Generation is gorgeous and if more songs had that vibe I would be all in.

"I feel like" or "in my opinion" is a great way to preface statements many people would disagree with

it's perfectly fine that we have different feelings on things, but flat out telling the world "nah this new album shits on the one you're loving" is pretty sketchy

First half of the album is good, almost great

Second half tho?? Le poo poo

I don't know wtf Tip was doing production wise on the second half of the album. There are 3 or 4 songs on the second half where a Tribe track is in there but he added 2 or 3 layers of trash that fucked up the songs. Those songs are fucking ruined IMO. This isn't really a Tribe album.

My early assessment was based on the first half of the album. Almost wish I never listened to the rest of it.

This is a 3 mic album.

"I didnt like it" is perfectly acceptable
"maybe it's not for me" sounds even more rational

when everyone else says "this is great" and you say "this is trash", you're implying an absolute correctness on the issue

but I know you're not here to have discussions you can learn anything from, just to argue back and forth. I cringe when I see Talib Kweli doing that on Twitter, so I'll fall back and let you believe whatever you want

whatever the fuck he was doing with the drum machine during Jarobi's verse on "Lost Somebody"? Shit actually snapped me out of the vibe of the song. I laughed out loud like..."fuck is you doing, Tip?" Overall, I respectfully disagree with you on the second half of the album. I think it's dope, but that one instance really jumped out at me. I know you have an artist's ear, though.

You hear Space Program and it feels so familiar and almost like you heard it on another Tribe Album.

And yet it doesn't sound dated.

I was wondering what a tribe album would sound like in 2016 and it's exactly what I expected.

I mean this as a compliment though it doesn't quite sound like it.

Tip does too but I really like Jarobi's verses here. I'm not as used to hearing Jarobi all over shit so that probably has something to do with it.

Phife's verses were strong too....there's just not enough of them unfortunately. I wonder how different this album would be if Phife hadn't died and could've saw this project through to the end.

Yes, yes...Y-E-S!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a 38 year old Black woman who LOVES A Tribe Called Quest, we needed this in our lives!!!!!

Thank you, Tribe!!!!!!!! I love the album(s).

Between Tribe, Common and Solange & Beyonce...with a little bit of last year Kendrick and Anderson Paak thrown in Unapologetically Black Music has been good. Now, if Kendrick Lamar dropped a surprised album to end this year it would seriously be the blackest Blackety black year in music. ✊🏿

listened to the album for the first time this morning. 30 degrees out...I hit the street all Northfaced up and walked to the coffee spot. A shade over 2 miles each way. Nice, brisk walk with Tribe in the Bose cans. Thoughts after 1 complete listen:

Space Program is good...real good

Phife has some dope lines in We the People

Solid Wall of Sound might be my second favorite

I don't hate Kids...I feel like I should like it more than I do, though. Just a little wacky...I can't call it.

I don't usually care for rapper sex songs, but they made Enough work. It works. I like it.

They should have taken that 1st verse off of Mobius. The way Busta dismantled that track just wasn't fair...to anyone else.

Lost Somebody was tough

the raps are topical, personal, introspective, and worldly. good stuff. there's definitely something to be said for aged rappers with an experience-informed worldview who can compose compelling verses. there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of that lately. i'm enjoying that aspect of the project

but i think i don't like the album. i find myself having pulled a 180 and i'm listening for the lyrics in spite of the music instead of the inverse. i'm not feeling any of these beats and that's probably going to put this album in the "one time listen" category. it's very apparent tip & co. haven't been making music for a long time. i don't know exactly what is happening with the drum programming at the end of "lost somebody" but it sounds amateurish. the beats sound stale and the mixing is bad. it sounds like someone trying to imitate tribe circa 2006 on cheap equipment instead of a collection of hip hop legends finding their inspiration again

they dont sound like Tribe, they sound like the evolution of Q-Tip. He's the producer of everything, so We Got It From Here follows that path

assuming you enjoy those, this album might make a lot more sense to you

Qtip made the whole TCQ discography except for TLM and BRandL. The first three albums were all Qtip productions. Making this record no different from those. He just never insisted on getting the credit for it.

Apologies...but this truth seems to allude so many. Qtip has stated in interviews....'i made all the beats for a tribe called quest'.

My impression (contrary to what I always believed) is that Ali did the cuts and nothing else. Literally....EVERYTHING other than the dj flourishes and cuts was done by Qtip. The fact that he didn't get credit for that was a major sticking point in their relationships. I imagine that's why the liner notes are so clear this time around.

What I'm saying is that the fact Tip did the majority of the production is not different from the past. If anything....Tip did LESS on this album because of the various studio musicians and guest instrumentalists that were used. The first three albums were much more self-contained, Qtip 'solo' productions.

There are 2 beats on the first three albums that were not made by Qtip and those were made by Skeff Anslem (8 million stories and Show Business) Everything else was Qtip by himself. The only reason I'm clarifying this is because it shocked me when I found out around 6 years ago or so. I thought Muhammed was much more involved than he was.

But while Tip likely did most of the legwork, Tip, Phife, and other producers were in the mix as well, adding ideas and suggestions to the music.

It wasn't just ALL Tip, much like Radiohead isn't ALL Thom.

The reason I say this, is that Ali was a talented producer in his own right and his skills and tastes likely pushed those productions into the "Tribe" sound that we all like.

That "sound" isn't as prevalent on this album because Ali wasn't involved very much with this album because he had other commitments.

Radiohead is a very bad analogy. They were WAY more democratic in contributions from other group members. The first three Tribe albums were essentially one-man production works. Others might have suggested some arrangement details....but put simply, Qtip made 99% of the beats by himself. I was surprised to learn this too.

or as Jay would say "if you want my old shit, buy my old albums"

I don't think Tip wants to do that old sound. Maybe it's dated to him or he feels he is better as a producer. I'm not feeling some of the production AT ALL but Dis Generation, Mobius, Spasmastic... are flames

Tip also tries to sing on some of these joints and I don't know why.

it's probably frustrating to limit yourself with the inherent audio problems that sampling presents. To be honest...I'd rather listen to a Qtip 'bedroom production' than Tip with studio musicians in a studio. But that's me.

and there is also a QTip sound and after he did his solo shit I think he moved away from that sound and some people like it and some don't.

I think when there is a group and one of the guys goes solo or the group breaks up and reunites the sound won't be the same if the group isn't the same.

I think age and outside influences change so the sound changes.

Ionno, I still bump it and it's not a bad album overall but i think the track Kids is a prime example of what I don't like about the album and it's funny that 3stacks is on that track.
I get the feeling that Tip is like Andre and Phife is like Big Boi. One experiments and the other rhymes over the safe hip hop beats that most old fans love.

Crazy how Phife and Big Boi wanted to do shows and get that money a few times a year and Tip and 3 Stacks are like nah... I'm good. They want to act, sing and do other shit.

Because people have been claiming Tribe strayed from its sound ever since BRL. I think that they have an approach to their art, but not a sound that one can adequately articulate.

But he will always be mostly defined by what he did with Led Zeppelin. Same thing with Qtip. The sound he made with the first 3 Tribe albums will go down as the defining contribution of his artistry.

So the question is why?

I would guess that it's to symbolise everything going to shit when a person you love is dying... and the abrupt cut off at the end is symbolic of how it can be to 'lose somebody' before their time.. Then the track goes quiet for like the next 30 seconds, which is symbolic of never hearing that persons voice again. I thought it was obvious given the topic of the song. Pretty sure I'm not over thinking it

let me first say great album i love it.
been bumping it non stop since last saturday...

now with that said it doesn't feel like a tribe album
there is no first verse with phife coming with heat...
his verses are good don't get me wrong but think of vintage tribe and you will get my meaning...
it feels very much like a Tip album where phife is on some tracks... now this isn't a bad thing and I understand how the album was made so it's understandable...

i blame myself for comparing them to their old selves and see they have matured... but again it's a great album.

I got a good life man

I really like the album, there are 5 or 6 tracks I don't feel at all but the tracks I like, I really like.

All that being said, ever since the Tribe Doc I kinda soured on Tip. Maybe the documentary was slanted but it really felt like Tip didn't respect Phife.

Which brings me to the really shitty opinion about this album. Why the fuck is it coming out now? All these years Phife has said he wanted to tour, do a few shows, stack some cash and Tip wasn't having it. Now that Phife is gone it's videos and shows and shit.

My opinions ain't shit, I don't know what was really going on between them but dammit, something about this whole album doesn't sit right with me even tho I really like it. I know groups break up, get angry, vow to never perform again but the timing of this album is bittersweet for me.

Now I know of don't know what you got til it's gone... but man, this is really a Tip album with a few Phife appearances. Jarobi said this album killed Phife. What does that mean? The joy? The traveling?

Ionno... none of this is going to stop me from liking the music but every now and then when I see a performance or a video for the new material I wonder how Phife and his family feel about it. Maybe his health was so bad he couldn't tour.

All I know is this isn't a "Tribe" album IMO.

Phife was alive. It was an exact year ago when I was in NYC, and saw that they finally started performing together. I'm still mad I didn't go to their show that night. And it makes sense if this reunion actually lead to Phife's death in some way.

Tip is the Paul Mccartney of Tribe. The unappreciated one that responds in a way that makes him look vindicative. He kinda feel into that trap of being too humble while it was happening and then having to over-correct later on and coming off self-absorbed. My guess is that in later years he became more concerned about his legacy (understandable) and probably really regretted not seeking out credit for his contribution while it was happening.

The others kinda resent him because he held all the power. He has more money than the others and didn't really need to do reunion tours....Whereas the others were probably a little desperate for that cash-in money. So you could see why they would resent the hell outta him. They kinda NEED him and he doesn't need them. That's a bad dynamic for friendship/group dynamics.

From Tip's perspective....he spread around credit for Tribe's sound in a pretty altruistic way. And you can see how many people underestimate his contribution...people have a really hard time accepting that he basically created their entire sound. This HAS to be frustrating for Tip. And the other members hesitancy in giving him that credit probably came off as a sort of betrayal in response to his generosity in never claiming it during those years. Then....when he tries to reclaim that credit in subsequent years he's characterized as being selfish. So you can see how it's frustrating for him too. Basically, the other guys were just along for a ride that he built...so you can imagine how it must feel when they make diss tracks about you and do interviews claiming that your the cause of the break-up. On some 'There'd be nothing TO break-up if it wasn't for me'. So he almost HAS to become the self-absorbed, unlikeable one even though this whole thing was HIS creation. (ala Macca)

I'd imagine Phife's wife and family are probably like 'we would've been alot more comfortable if Tip just cooperated' but Tip's counter would be 'I'm not responsible to carry everyone else's weight. If you really need me that badly then maybe you shouldn't make me look bad in the press'. It's just a lose-lose scenario....their tension isn't a lack of character...it's a pretty typical situation where everyone tends to double-down on their own perspective.

I'm just happy they had their Spinal Tap moment and found some common ground before it was too late.

IMO Tribe was always QTip and everyone else. Phife was terrible early on but his voice was unique.

Thing is... way back when they first started I don't think most people cared, especially Tip. Probably wasn't until Pete Rock, Premiere and other producers started getting credit and Tip saw those publishing checks come in that he did the math.

Rap groups are funny, especially when one person does the heavy lifting on the humble.

I can see why Tip would be frustrated over the credit but that's the funny thing about groups. Fans like who they like and more times than not we just want the music and live shows.

Great points tho...

I've read interviews with Tip where he says that producers were typically seen as crews instead of individuals. He specifically pointed to the Trackmasters and how he wanted to be part of a crew like that which made him less insistent on getting credit. And look at all the other acts leading up to Tribe....there are all sorts of unclaimed or unclear producer credit situations. I just always assumed the dj's made the beats during those years....so Eric B made Rakim's beats, Ali made Tribe beats, etc. Obviously I was very wrong but noone really seemed to care to make that shit clear back then. And you're right...the emergence of Pete Rock, Primo, et al becoming stars just for production work probably changed all that.

of this so i never got into the details b/c in a naive kinda way i didn't want the ugly truths of the industry and all the 4080ish shit fuck up my recollections of tribe's Youthful Expressions.

i got the weebay face now w/ the realization that tip was doing most of the heavy lifting on the sound as opposed to ali shaheed. and then when it became about the ummah, and incorporating dilla alongside tip and ali, even then it seemed like the music got more artsy, but there were critiques of it being less tribeish.

i was legit mad at BR&L and thought, in total, it didn't hold up to the rest of the canon, but i fucks w/ The Love Movement just because some of the music was just so beautiful. (title track and 4 moms being just timeless, incredible joints to me). but the whole still didn't feel as atcq as i'd have liked.

I'm glad the response was so big.....still wish Phife got the reap this reward personally....especially since he was the one who wanted to tour earlier on.

SN: Is there any way to see play counts on Spotify? I know I had this album on repeat all weekend.

Floating around labeling it a 'post trump' album...I haven't read them to be honest.

I just think the album feels very timely given the state of things in America right now..I'm wondering if part of the reason it's doing so well (apart from it being a really solid album) is that people feel that timing as well....and if clinton won...would it be less relatable and not do as well? A good friend of mine thinks so

Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothing" is political and still classic because it's good music (not calling the Tribe album classic)

some of the album deals with the threat of Trump winning. YG aside commercial Hip Hop hasnt really addressed it, but ATCQ may have looked even more heroic if the album dropped right after he lost
