"What will it take for Black people to have self-sustaining economies?"

I work with a couple of NOI people, and this is what they've been saying since the start. Garvey before them. Asian-Americans and Latino/as in some cities own most of the businesses in their communities.

What will it take for Black people to do the same, at a large scale, for the long haul?

No quips about saving money on shoes and weave hair. REAL tangible actions.

Too many of our places are food deserts. With concentrated areas and only the worst foods available, we could invest in the manufacturing of DIY vertical gardening kits.

Which will only come from connectivity access. Much of DC only had the equivalent of dialup. People go to the library to scroll news sites. Available wifi and >$50 tablets are better for that.

Occupy wallstreet bought off a lot of medical debt. But our communities are preyed upon by the payday loan industry. Regulation of the interest rates could make them somewhat tenable (albeit a bad idea) and then refinancing could help people that are currently fucked by them.

A lot of the times we try Kickstarter or go fund me but like most things those funds almost always go to white business. We should invest in microlending to support our own.

Try kiva.org

Kiva is an international nonprofit, founded in 2005 and based in San Francisco, with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. We celebrate and support people looking to create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.

By lending as little as $25 on Kiva, anyone can help a borrower start or grow a business, go to school, access clean energy or realize their potential. For some, it’s a matter of survival, for others it’s the fuel for a life-long ambition.

100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes to funding loans. Kiva covers costs primarily through optional donations, as well as through support from grants and sponsors.

By that I mean we can --as individuals-- start and grow businesses and network with others to build communities and social centers. Ultimately, we'd have to grow enough to be able to provide ob opportunities for other black people to expand the community.

need a thorough knowledge of self, which includes our collective history here, and worldwide and then an understanding of our contemporary situation. Amos Wilson's, Blueprint For Black Power, is an excellent resource, to use to gain a sound, foundational, understanding of our contemporary situation.

After that, we will be in a much better condition to pool our resources and begin building the much needed institutions, in our communities.

Bruh is right about hair care. I see more Black-owned hair care products, and I make most of the products I use. HOWEVER, Blacks would be more set than all other minorities combines if we RAN the weave and wig industry.

Let's identify the main items Black people spend money on:

*Beauty and grooming. We have Black-owned products, Black-owned salons and barbers and I count the Black beauty bloggers in this number. HOWEVER, we don't own most beauty supply store or nail salons.

*Clothing and shoes- Where's FUBU and Cross Colors for this generation?

*Automobiles/Transportation

*Produce/Food and alcohol

Name some others. Suggest how Black people can sustain businesses in these industries if you have ideas.

There are some really smart brothers and sisters who can't go corporate b/c they're felons. We should have programs that funnel them into small business ownership.

I'm speculating but I bet more people died during the bombing of black wall street than those that helped build it.

It could work outside of the US, but not inside as long as most whites continue to carry on in this fashion and at this point the majority of them are pretty much unchangeable.

19. "Generational Wealth. "
In response to Reply # 0

We've got to take good care of the assets that we have (cars, property, businesses, savings) and make sure we pass these things on to the next generation so that they are not starting from zero.

Then successive generations have it a bit easier and have some capital to start off life with. Right now our kids are starting off their careers in debt. We have to reverse that and it starts with making it a bit easier for each successive generation.

21. "It has to be an organic movement of black entrepreneurship.."
In response to Reply # 0

It can't be something where you're planning it to be just black. Business doesn't work like that. In business you have to move in the direction that presents the best opportunities for success.

However, if enough black people become successful business owners organically there we be some who's customers and business partners are primarily or in part black or in the black community.

We need more black people to simply become successful business owners regardless of the products, services, customer base, etc. The rest will follow.

Scrapping up enough capital to open a brick and mortar, take and idea from your head to production, or purchase inventory are big barriers to entry for many black folks. Most can't go to family members to scrape up $20,000-$50,000 because the money isn't there. There is no uncle who can "help you get into the business." You're welcome to love yourself all you like but without access to start up capital good luck.

nothing we love more than showing the world how much money we got by spending it on dumb shit.

I know everyone isn't built to own a home or desire to own a home but sheeeit. If you don't want the maintenance of a house buy a condo, an apt., a co-op...

Real estate is the move. Invest in stocks that are related to real estate.

We have to shake this consumerism that America is selling.

it starts individually and with our families, making sure our kids don't fall behind in the classes, eliminating wasteful spending, , saving and spending on assets that appreciate. That needs to be promoted and these stars or anyone talking otherwise, they should be shunned.

We need more mentorships and appreticeships supporitn ggroups like big brogthers and 100 black men

more trade schools

supporting credit unions that provide small business and home loans, investing in real estate even collectively through tools like REITS.

maybe setting of community coops, like http://www.newleafmarket.coop/about

If we invest in our communities buying low, clean up the crime and schools, we can reap the benefits of appreciation, if everyone feels invested in the communities.

I'm going to start a thread on it on Monday for people to post up links or drop some knowledge. This is the second time someone has spoke on it and I'm curious to know the how, what, why, etc.
