"So who's our 2020 candidate?"

Let's anoint someone.

Tell me about Kamala Harris. I'm out of touch with CA politics these days, but it seems like people have been talking about her. I mainly know her only from the Supreme Court buzz.

Who else will be a compelling party leader in 2020?

Liz Warren? She'll be 71 by then, but that's only a couple years older than Hillary is. She certainly seems like the person most capable of uniting the party as it stands right now.

or Bill Maher.

It's got to be some blowhard that we are at least somewhat embarrassed by.

But for real, the less political experience the better. The longer you've been in government, the more the opponent can point to what you did or didn't do. That's always bad.

As long as you can fall back on what you would have done, you will always have a winning position.
With that said, the DNC will probably push someone like Chuck Schumer

Apparently there's little correlation between experience and skill in being president.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/our-worst-presidents-came-in-with-a-lot-of-experience/

As bad of a candidate as Hillary was, there's no really knock in her resume, to me at least. But like the article mentions, very little of being president connects to political credibility.

Obamacare is the obvious example. Are they really gonna take away 20 million people's health insurance? Are they really gonna let insurers discriminate on pre-existing conditions again? Are they really gonna go back from a system where 25% premium increases are an election year scandal, to the old system where 50% increases were routine?

"Obamacare" is unpopular, but all the elements that make it up are hugely popular (the above), or necessary for holding it together (the mandate).

So now the Republicans need to contend with that. I'll be watching with popcorn.

is to just shuffle around the pieces on health care, leave us with a system that's functionally equivalent to Obamacare, but call it something new, and then take credit for it.

Since their supporters haven't been paying any attention to the actual plan they're opposing, I fear that might work.

Then *our* best option, I think, is that whenever premiums rise by 25% (even though they normally rose by more than that pre-Obamacare), we go apeshit crazy blaming "Trumpcare", and take it as an opportunity to argue for the public option.

Yes they will. Even though they lost the popular vote AND polling of people who did vote for Trump shows people don't want to lose their healthcare.

>gonna let insurers discriminate on pre-existing conditions

Yes.

Yes.

AND they'll have lower cost options that provide little value, and those options will quickly balloon to cost as much or more as Obamacare options while providing much less benefits.

Remember their actual real idea is this : When you get sick use the money you saved up to pay for it. When you are out of money then ask your church or family for help. Then let the market decide.

I AM NOT shitting you.

Indeed, with Republicans the Party of Reagan stuff was always more about image than reality. He raised taxes on net, tripled the national debt, and increased regulation, especially financial regulation.

With Obama, he serviced Big Banks, Big Insurance, Big Arms Dealers, and instigated many conflicts that continue to cause death. Of course he will be the perfect Reagan corollary. He will be known for helping the little person and bringing peace. Just like the Reagan myth, both parties will eat that shit up.

3rd times a charm, right?

She was the strongest candidate. Who could possibly be stronger if our best couldn't even beat Trump?

Seriously though, I like Tulsi Gabbard or Kshama Sawant.

Bottom line, let's make this decision on policy and winning strategies this time.

i keep going back to gavin newsom. he's basically kinfolk to gordon getty, who had long been grooming him for president before gavin fucked it up by violating the man code with a staffer's wife while mayor of SF.

but he's been publicly calculated in all but erasing it ever since.

acts presidential in every appearance.

kamala as VP would basically be a power-couple ticket.

When was the last time a White man won the DEMS an election?

Clinton: 60,571,914
Obama (2012): 65,915,795
vs.
Trump: 60,126,238
Romney (2012): 60,933,504

Hillary lost b/c millennials and minorities didn't want to come out and vote for her the same way they voted for Obama.

Selected a White man is going to re-create 2004 all over again.

He's in here hiding on some change the subject type sh!t.

This thread also represents the problems with Dems, day-dreaming about a candidate 4 years from now rather than thinking about what the party needs to do in the short term to change and lay the groundwork.

The Dems that are doodling Michelle's (lol!) or Powell's (smfh) name are an example of what is completely a$$-backwards about the party.

I think she's definitely viewed as "establishment politics."

Obviously it will be hard to find someone with experience who's qualified who *also* qualifies as "a true progressive" for the hardcore liberals, but maybe if it's just someone without Clinton's baggage, those folks will get on board. We absolutely, desperately need those folks in 2020.

I think it was other stuff that turned the 'progressives' against Hillary.

In part by being a more obvious heir to the Obama legacy.

My only concern with Biden was that there's a reason he got essentially no support in the 2008 primary. He's a little *too* folksy for a lot of people. He can fall into a trap where it's hard to take him seriously. And he's been a bit of a gaffe machine.

But Trump gets away with it better than Biden ever did. Biden is still enough of a politician that people expect him not to say stupid things. With Trump they get to blow it off with "He's not a politician!"

But yes, in retrospect, if we'd known the blue wall would crack, I agree Biden likely would have done better, especially in PA. But we can't pretend the Republicans wouldn't have still pulled out all the stops to paint him as an effete Delaware senator and "more of the same."

few things working against him....

The next Black man who runs for President will run in the shadow of Barack Obama.... Corey's temperament and communication is enthusiastic but it's going to fail in comparison to Obama....people are going to say he's "doing too much"...trying to hard...

plus Booker isn't a progressive.... he's far more a centrist and if he runs in the primary a progressive candidate is going to exploit some of his decisions...

He's not married..... that's a complete deal breaker.... his current girlfriend is a poet....it would be a good dynamic...but he's not married yet...

One of Hilary's biggest problems was that she's very clearly a politician, and people didn't trust her "record" in such...

people want change....EVERY election LOL.... they want a fresh face, and fresh ideas from the last administration which many will have grown tired of, whether they admit it or not...

both sides need fresh faces and ideas...

Can you imagine the optics of a Black woman debating a White man on a national stage? This country historically takes great joy in putting a "sassy/mouthy" sister in her place. Can you even imagine the kind of coddling and disarming she would have to do to even get a Primaries slot?

A strong/"powerful" Black man is generally more palatable than a BW. Just the other day the New York Times had a story on Michelle Obama, which the posted on Twitter with the caption " How @FLOTUS shed an angry black woman caricature and evolved into a political powerhouse". Speaks for itself.

What Black women can you think of that are lauded, or even tolerated on a grand scale by the general public for their ability to debate and/or offer biting opinions in mixed (non-black) company? They won't even have sisters on sports debate shows, outside of Jemele. And she's more often in a moderator role, which is usually the case for women of color in those settings.

Donna Brazile still has a job, and next up seem to be cut from the same cloth. These are the people who got washed in 2014 mid terms and lost the house, senate and presidency to a GOP led by Donald F-ing Trump.

DNC Like, look out, now we're ready to get serious!! Fuck outta here.

All this time I just figured you were overly loyal

You and your GROUPTHINK leading up to this is who were (and apparently still are) delusional.

If you and your bosses can't learn from this, really look back at your mistakes, we are all doomed.

Your bosses crowned an unlikable candidate, with no message, and ran a horrible campaign.

Completely SHAMEFUL low turnout and your girl lost PENNSYLVANIA and MICHIGAN

And you are STILL barking down people and you got folks in here doodling names on their notebook for 2020.

Please tell the folks who pay you to focus on REBRANDING the party AS FOR THE PEOPLE (no, not saying socialist or left...JUST FOR THE PEOPLE.) and start planning for 2018.

Or are you guys all in a room together crying about Jill Stein?

Sen. Cory Booker (New Jersey) Booker, 47, has a compelling background that includes rescuing a woman from a burning building and going out of his way as the Mayor of Newark to shovel a resident’s driveway after a snowstorm. Booker, who is up for Senate re-election in 2020, was reportedly on Clinton’s short list to be her running mate and has a reputation as a reformer. The Rhodes Scholar has a likable personality and will have plenty of experience by 2020.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (Ohio) Brown is another Democrat who leans left of the party. The raspy-voiced labor advocate isn’t talked about quite as much as Elizabeth Warren or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (who doesn’t make this list because of his age) but may be just as appealing to Democrats as either of them. There was some talk before the 2016 Democratic primary as to why progressives weren’t “begging him” to run. He's popular in Ohio, a crucial swing state.

Julian Castro (Texas) Castro, 42, received consideration over the summer to serve as Clinton's running mate. He has been the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development since 2014. As a Hispanic politician from Texas, he will have a good chance to rally a crucial voter demographic. The former San Antonio Mayor has an identical twin brother, Joaquin.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (New York) Cuomo has tried to position himself as the face of progressive politics as the governor of New York State, endorsing a $15 minimum wage, gay marriage, among other measures. Still, he’s been criticized for economic and budget stances like cutting taxes for the wealthy, which may hurt his chances in a theoretical 2020 run.

Sen. Tim Kaine (Virginia) As Clinton's running mate, the former governor of Virginia has immediate name appeal and comes from a state that is pivotal for his presidential hopes. Kaine, 58, also speaks Spanish, which is important considering Latinos are still an important voter bloc and may be even more crucial in 2020. But Democrats may prefer a candidate with less political experience.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts) Warren is commonly brought up as a strong candidate because she has relentlessly fought against Wall Street and has proven herself to be an effective campaigner this year, attacking Trump on behalf of Clinton. She’s beloved by the left, like Sanders, but at 71 years of age in 2020, would be the oldest elected president in history. Meanwhile, Massachusetts nominees have had poor success, with Michael Dukakis, John Kerry and Mitt Romney all falling short.

dude

Fuck it, put up Leonardo Dicaprio or Susan Sarandon.

Apparently America doesn't consider "experience in politics" to be relevant... I wouldn't get bogged down in it. Find a face you can sell a "nice" anti-establishment protest message with to counter the only currently available protest vote being for a decidedly nasty bastard.

its just if the thought of the Daily Show during the most important election year was too much for him, then why would he want to be a post-Trump President? If he wanted to prevent this all he had to do was provide the same commentary he has for years with an objective view of the political process.

but that wouldn't bode well for Clinton, so we got Trevor Noah instead : \

One of the biggest reasons he stepped away is because all that bullshit drained him.

If you listen to him talk about spending a single day in the cesspool of Capital Hill with 9/11 first responders to help get their healthcare bill passed, he describes it as one of the most horrifying experiences of his life seeing how they were treated.

Just superficially she'd have the angle of leaving the DNC to support Bernie before this whole mess. Shows good judgment at the least.

Dude is doing a national tour this year, hitting every state and kissing babies. He was in Dallas on MLK day meeting with the police and cleaning up the hood.
He used to be atheist, but is now having a change of heart.
Facebook filed documents straightening out what would happen to his shares if he ran for office.

Yeah he running.

A few things excite me about it.

Kills Trump on so many levels. More Billions and More successful business-wise than him.

Yet he brings the things to the table that would make a rich business person attractive in the first place:

1. While Trump is still hustling for dough and I think there is a legitmate argument he is in bed with rush for investment opportunities, Zuck is really so rich he really doesn't need to do it for personal enrichment.

2. Zuck would be a true technocrat. Trump sold people on finding the best and the brightest to work in government, but he really just got a bunch of old white guys he owes favors to.

3. Youth. Media isn't really talking about it but it is time to take the government away from these 70 year olds.

I think he should grab an office in the mean time and prepare to run in 2024 at the latest. if an opportunity arose in 2020, he could jump on it but don't plan on it.

White people can help create independent black nations. They can encourage their homeboys to leave us the fuck alone!

Conscientious White people on the inside are the main ones who can influence the "savage whites" who say fuck the people just keep mining the earth, raping the planet, murdering and pillaging for green paper.

I never said white people are obsolete. I said Black people are equally as powerful.

Are you white? Were you offended?

watching the "Oh STFU" reaction to Streep, even from people who aren't political, I think he kind of falls into that California, hollywood, elitist "let us tell you what's best for you", out of touch with actual people image

he has a shot at CA gov tho

In response to Reply # 216

I saw this quote amongst the links above:

"I don't think Assad should be removed," she told CNN's Chris Cuomo in November. "If Assad is removed and overthrown, ISIS, al Qaeda, Al Nustra, these Islamic extremist groups will walk straight in and take over all of Syria . . . they will be even stronger."

She's not wrong about the second part (post-removal). What's your alternative option?

Trump has lowered the bar.

All the former reservations about a candidate being too young, or too old, or too inexperienced, or too extreme are out the window.

my greatest fear was that her not challenging Hillary for the nomination would mean her chance would be gone...

I know her age would an issue....

but I still say today that she was/is the best presidential candidate for the Democrats...

its imperative that the next candidate be a champion of the progressive wing of the party

she said she doesn't want to be president and I believer her. Despite the cool house and secret service protection its kind of a shitty job. Senate is way easier but you still can have impact but at the same time still have somewhat of a semi-normal life. Not to mention the drama of going through a national election campaign. Some people just don't want to sign up for all that.

In response to Reply # 200

Bernie got beat....

The DNC was questionable about him because he wasn't then...nor is he now an actual registered Democrat....

him not conceding that he lost and guiding his people towards supporting the candidate that would have avoided a crazy mf'er being the president...

the energy Bernie garnered in young voters was great....the progressives now deserve to lead the DNC...no question...

but as far as Bernie personally..... Elizabeth Warren didn't support him when doing so would have been detrimental to the effort to stop trump.....

there are a lot of people who should have done the same thing...

in hindsight she should have been the one to challenge Hillary.....she would have beaten Hilary and Trump..no question...

They hate Franken MORE than Clinton because of his books.

Note: I have contributed to Al Franken campaigns in the past and will continue to do so in the future. He'd get my vote.

Franken will be 69 in 2020 - which y'all said was too old for Hillary and almost too old for Bernie.

Edit: And you if haven't read his fictional book where he became president in 2000 you should. His inauguration speaks was crazier than even Trumps. It's one of the funniest audiobooks I have ever heard.

i think a big piece of who should be president will be determined on who steps up and leads the next two years. Some candidates mentioned in this post have that opportunity, but i'm not ready to anoint anyone, that's for sure.

In the mean time we really need to take a look at the local and state races over the next few years if we want to start to reshape the direction of our government.

the country, specifically the Dems, take the opportunity appeal to progressives, or at least liberals, more

but per usual, the Dems will keep doing their status quo and stay a centrist party and try to shame progressives when they choose not to participate in the lesser of two evils

Here is the thing, I really think anyone can be a decent president IF they show some chops or aptitude for it in lower offices. Stuart Smiley is a great senator (and I don't think you need to go to Harvard to be a Senator).

So if either of these dudes ran for a lower office and did a great job, no reason in my mind why they couldn't be president some day.

Dems could win 2020 pretty easily if they run a decent/diverse field of candidates, run a fair primary, and let actual voters decide who the nominee is.

That said, the conversation among the rank and file is always going on. The people who think a candidate is 'anointed' are usually the ones who just weren't paying attention in the off years. There's no reason we can't talk about candidates before the primaries are happening.

Gave a real inspiring speech. And inspiring and exciting people is like 75% of getting elected president.

Don't know much about him though, and that may be his biggest problem (or benefit?)

I don't know if being a relative unknown like Obama can work in this day and age

Or, maybe before that when the author tried to convince us that meeting with James Carville, Donna Brazile, and Mary Matalin is just some regular folks, sittin' around and talkin' politics. Or later, when they revealed that his entire family is deeply entrenched in local politics.

So, pass.

He seems like a good dude, but the whole "I'm not the sort of person who runs for president" pretty neatly permits him to slide by without actually suggesting something that will improve the material lives of most Americans. And he's definitely not in a rush to provide an answer like that. So what makes him so good? A speech? The fact that he's from Louisiana? Because if the latter meant that he was able to deliver some Southern electoral college votes, maybe we should start putting that promise to use more locally. Louisiana has a pair of Republicans in the US Senate. I'm tired of seeing John Kennedy play the "I'm completely senile but I have opinions about grits" card on CNN, though he's not up until 2022. Luckily, Cassidy sucks too. And wikipedia says that he beat the other Landrieu so we can amuse ourselves with a revenge story.

It's two years away and the only thing at stake for guys like this is this nebulous idea of "viability". If he can't bring himself to suggest something concrete and radical to help people, then he should stick to making really good, and deeply needed speeches.

... constitutes an actual plan.

And it's not true that the folks who are trying to make themselves into contenders aren't engaging on specific policy. Gillibrand, Booker, and Harris have all been expressing their push left in the last year in terms of concrete proposals. They're all in the Senate, so I guess it's technically their job. But it's still something.

Besides those using it to discredit him as inexperienced.

He wasn't running on his record as a state senator. Or his 2 years as a US senator.

He ran on the idea of hope and potential. Themes that put him in the national eye with his DNC speech.

Jealous might be a possibility, since he's at least been around politics for a long time, but still I think he'd be a long shot unless a lot happens in Maryland in the next year. Barack had 3 years experience before he really started running, and that was in the Senate.

My predictions:

Cory Booker will run
Elizabeth Warren will run
Biden probably won't
Bernie won't
Kamala Harris will run, but at this point she's looking more like a VP candidate.
Nobody's talking about Sherrod Brown right now, but my gut tells me he'd be a really strong candidate if he ran.
Tim Kaine won't run.
Terry McCauliffe will run, and will fizzle quickly.
Mitch Landrieu will run, and will fizzle slowly.

Most likely ticket, I think, is Warren/Landrieu, or maybe Warren/Booker.

The *strongest* ticket, I think, is Brown/Harris.

EDIT: oh, and I forgot about Kirsten Gillibrand, maybe not a good sign. She's a contender, but I don't see her winning. She's tried to be too many things to too many people, and you can't get away with that anymore.

Rust belt populist, extremely knowledgeable and well prepared, and an exceptionally skilled campaigner. He's the only person I can imagine who could call Trump on his bullshit in a way that might turn a few of his supporters.

I like Gavin, but he'd be a dead man walking in the Midwest and the rust belt, and I can't fathom him making the general election case that needs to be made. If Jerry Brown was 20 years younger, that'd be a different story.

If he can speak that way about other relevant topics, I think he can really resonate with a wide range of voters.

He had an air of authenticity and earnestness that you don't see to often out of a politician.

Everyone one else on your list besides Sherrod Brown or Bernie Sanders lacks that characteristic. They all seems like they are playing a character of what they think people want to see.

I think portraying authenticity and passsion is essential for 2020

It seems like governor is one position where party affiliation is not as important for some reason. Massachusetts is solidly democratic, but they currently have a republican governor. Vermont too.

Illinois has a republican
Louisiana has a democrat
Montana has a democrat

Was reading this piece last month on the mindset of these narcissist CEO types who feel their jump to public service can only mean they have to start at the absolute top https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2018/06/06/save-us-from-ceos-who-think-they-should-be-president/?utm_term=.8a305870658c

"One of the things about being an extremely rich CEO is that people who want things from you are constantly telling you what a genius you are. I’m sure that after a while it’s hard not to believe it. That includes politicians, to whom you have ready access and who will nod their heads and listen attentively when you tell them your ideas about politics, no matter how banal those ideas actually are. They will react as though your thought that, say, “Democrats should come up with some ideas about the economy” is the most brilliant thing they’ve ever heard and you have completely transformed their view of the world with your luminous insight. They do this because they want your money, and if they’re good at what they do, they do it very convincingly, no matter how dumb what you told them was. If you’re naïve enough about that, you walk away thinking that you could do their job way better than them, no matter how little you actually understand"

a president who walked in with no political experience, no real policies, and a known bigot. A joke.

Democrats need to have experience, tangible policies, no real scandals.......damn near squeaky clean to be in the forefront. And then go out and beg people to vote because no matter what, the opposition always show up. The only way Democrats get voter turnout is if their candidate is a charismatic star.

This is the world we are living in and it is sad as fuck.

The truth is, if Trump feels that he could lose, he will delay or even cancel the election and Republicans are okay with it.

If the 2020 election happens, then it was allowed because Trump knows he will win.

We are in a dictatorship people. Please reference this post in 2 years when amendments are made.

That old saying that the person you’d rather have a
beer with wins?

(“You” being average Murricans)

Yeah, that.

So....no Warren. (She’d be more effective in a Dem
controlled Senate anyway)

Same on Sanders, plus age.

No Biden these days. I think he had a shot in
‘16, but his times up.

And my god in heaven, no John Kerry.

So, yeah I have a clear list of no but not a clear
yes.

Kamala? I don’t think Murrica is ready. Maybe VP

Booker? Laundrieu? Maybe.

Beto has some juice but I’d prefer he wins and
keeps his seat.

I honestly don’t know much about the Castro
brothers.

I just want a real primary that’s stays as far away
from negative attacks as possible.

Because I just saw this earlier:

But, Booker admits he was handsy back in the day and regularly spoke sexual assault-y language.

Looks like he did very well in a Trump state- even better than he did in 2012.

I read that he doesn't run away from progressive policies, though I would need someone more in the know to confirm that.

What about a Brown/Kamala ticket? Or something like that?

But yeah, that's one reason the close Cordray loss was very disappointing.

I still think he's our best bet. He's always come off as the kind of person that the whole coalition, plus independents, could vote for. Unapologetically progressive, in a very genuine rust-belt sort of way (as opposed to the college millennial progressivism that so many people roll their eyes at), but also very smart and pragmatic, honest, and relatively difficult to smear. I don't think there's anyone else as likely to win back the 'blue wall', which is still the easiest path to EC victory.

My biggest concern: even though he makes so much sense, he himself doesn't seem interested in it. Maybe he's just biding his time, waiting for a draft campaign to come in with an 'aw shucks,' or maybe he knows about problems the rest of us don't know.

Yeah, if someone could confidently say "he is the only way to win" or even "he is far an away the Dems best bet" I agree with you.

Its probably too early to say, but after doing a little research today, I would definitely consider voting for him in a primary.

It is odd he doesn't want to, but as you said, maybe he knows something we don't.

Or doesn't want to see his seat go to the GOP

Campaign that he'll take four years to fix the country than step aside and hand it over to his VP, who will hopefully be in a good position to win in 2024.

As for who that VP candidate would be, I don't know.

That said, FUCK NO to anyone over 70. I don't fucking want any old people at the helm.

Thats a no to...

Biden: 77 in 2020, 82 in 2024, 86 in 2028

Clinton: 73 in 2020, 77 in 2024, 81 in 2028

Sanders: 79 in 2020, 83 in 2024, 87 in 2028 - are you fucking kidding me?!

Warren: 73 in 2024, 77 in 2024, 81 in 2028

I don't mean to be ageist but in this case I am because we need fresh blood and fresh ideas in this political space.

Say what you want about Obama but I think his youth (in addition to Michelle's vision, and his background) had a lot to do the introduction of new positions, offices and methods.

Obama got in, did his thing and then he immediately got back in the game. I don't think we need someone thats going to do the job and then die the fuck off a day after the 2025/2029 inauguration.

That said...

O'Rourke / Harris

Is it a good idea? No fucking clue.
But, you got a white dude who has reformed and he has a Kennedy meets Obama swag (he skateboards! Look at him go!) and a Black woman VP. Whats not to like?

You have a white guy to keep the white folks calm that hes not some evil "cultural marxist" or whatever the fuck that is and, a black woman for "progressive" image..hey look! her husband is white! she can't be that bad! (if you can't tell this is all deep cynicism but I'm really actually not joking about the idea of them on the same ticket. I have no idea what their actual policy trajectories are so boo on me)

If he'd won, then sure. But since he didn't, not yet. I imagine he's going to spend the next year or so on a speaking tour in place like Iowa and New Hampshire to see how much interest there is in him outside of Texas, but just sticking him at the top of the ticket right now is a mistake.

And while I love Harris, man, the Dems probably don't want that "baggage" on the ticket. It will get really ugly, really fast. Unless you want an endless stream of campaign ads rattling off every undocumented immigrant that ever got so much as a jaywalking ticket in San Francisco and turn them into Willie Horton on your TV and radio.

I must be missing something, how would it be any worse with her than any other progressive favorite? Are you thinking the CA elitist/libtard hate in general? Or just her background?

I think Dems would be smart to have a woman on the ticket and, unfortunately, don't think Murrica is ready for a woman Pres...

Plus, as I've said before, I think it would be fun to see Pence debate a woman. Would he need permission first? I just think the optics will play well, personally.

Her background. Particularly the personal stuff about her relationship with the former Mayor of SF, Willie Brown. It would be fodder for some REALLY nasty campaign ads. And Drumf and the RNC would go there without thinking twice.

Plus, from her time as the DA of San Francisco, there were some cases of undocumented immigrants who were convicted felons who weren't turned over to ICE. And then committed violent crimes while living in SF. Those campaign ads would write themselves.

I had NO IDEA about this Willie Brown shit (just did my googles) and you are absolutely right.

A part of me wants to say "as VP candidate it might not be as visible, etc" but you are right.

Beto O'Rourke is the Democratic Party's brightest star. "Star quality" should absolutely not be a leading factor in considering a presidential candidate, but this is where we are.

Otherwise, if we're willing to fully lean into the whole celebrity thing, get Oprah in there.

RIP Heather O'Rourke.

Brown/Harris, maybe

I know it's Texas and it was a pipe dream but it's still hard to get past Beto losing to Ted Cruz. Trump will have a field day talking about how he couldn't' even beat Lyin' Ted (Lyin Ted will clap back by campaigning for Trump)

I like what little i saw of Landrieu, but i don't know much about him other than that speech and that his sister was kind of a hack.

Warren is a big fuck no for me. I always liked her but never as president. Biden and Bernie are too old. Clinton lololol nobody wants that.

** I'm not going to pretend I know much (really, anything) about her other than maybe she would help lock in the midwest

I haven't made my mind up about Beto. He definitely has an "it" factor, he raised a ton of money, campaign seemed organized from where I sit (I could be wrong), etc. From the swag to the fundraising very Obama-ish.

I think his lack of experience could actually be a positive, because he doesn't have the negatives that someone like say Biden or even Warren would. I get they would COME, but for now, he's a fresh face.

And he came close in Texas, which has to count for something, no? If Trump says "he couldn't even beat Lyin Ted" there are counter punches to that- I think anyone impressed by Trump's nicknames are locked in for him anyway.

But the lack of experience kicks in for me as a concern if he won and the governing began.

And, I'm curious how he would do in the midwest. I dunno.

The other thing about Beto, is if not Pres, what? Would he have a better shot at the Senate in '20?

enough to vote for him though?

Really, my point is "he couldn't beat Lyin Ted" doesn't seem like it would sway a voter to me.

Like.."ok, but I like what he has to say so what do I care happened in Texas two years ago?"

In other words, would anyone say "I was going to vote for this Beto guy, but after doing some research, I found out he lost to Ted Cruz"

Beto could say "You are right Donald. The people of TX made their choice in 2018. But I am confident the American people are going to choose..." blah blah blah

He could even go harder and say, "that right Donald, so what is that going to say about you when I beat you?"

There's always a response to Trump if you are willing to do it. It won't sway his cult, but it can still be done.

than anyone who is potentially running.

but i do think Dems best bet is a fresh face. None of these potential candidates so far generate any kind of enthusiasm. The closest they have is Bernie, but I don't think he can recapture it, plus he's too old.

And I really don't want any fucking celebrities, or celebrity lawyers or outspoken CEOs.

Beto beating the zodic killer would have springboarded him simply because he pulled off the impossible. However unfiar it might be to hold not winning Texas against him, it knocks him down a few notches imo.

But these fucking idiots voted Trump in for those reasons.

If Beto would have won then he'd be a better pick is all I'm saying.

He's been holding elected office for over a decade.

He's just not seen as "experienced" in DC, meaning one of these people who's been playing the game, finessing lobbyists and banks, sucking up to Pelosi, etc. That's the image people have of politicians who've been in Washington for too long, fair or not. He's been on the ground level, talking to people instead, hustling. That'd be seen as a huge advantage imo.

>If Beto would have won then he'd be a better pick is all I'm

He got insanely close in a state that hasn't elected a Democratic senator in thirty years.

And now he's the unemployed guy who lost to Ted Cruz until he wins something else.

You think The Presidency is that something else, fine. I think it's a strong liability to have lost the previous race.
(Nothing else can be won until 2020 unless their's a special election for congress in his district - or if he runs for city council again.)

And say what you want to with Obama WON his Senate election and then ran. If he'd have lost then he would not of become president - IMHO.

People don't re-run losers a lot. There's a reason - it's usually because the first thing that the opponent focuses on.

Pledge: If he is the nominee I WILL vote for him.

Trump didn’t win shit before he won the presidency

If Beto can push Cruz in Texas it means he probably knows how to connect with midwestern voters.

Why run a guy who gets huge crowds and raise tons of money when we can run a winner in Cali who has no chance in the Midwest and rust belt? That makes so much sense.

The DUDE JUST FUCKING LOST - JUST NOW - LIKE A MINUTE AGO.

That's a fucking liability.

He gets YOUR pussy wet - I get it - but he didn't get the voters in his state wet enuff to WIN.

Right now he's UNEMPLOYED. He used a BUNCH of money and EXCITEMENT to LOSE. There's at least a year gap between NOW and when the presidential campaign begins in earnest - I doubt he's going to keep that excitement going.

AND HE SAID HE IS NOT CONSIDERING RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT ON OCTOBER 18th!

Link: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1810/18/se.01.html

QUESTION: Do you foresee yourself one day running for the president of the United States?

(APPLAUSE)

O'ROURKE: Thank you for being here. Thanks for the question. Dana, since this is the last segment, asked me to be brief, and so I will. The answer is no. But I appreciate it. My wife was the only one to clap during that.

(LAUGHTER)

Our children are 11, they're 10, and they're 7 years old. We've told them we're going to take these almost two years out of our life to run this race, and then we're devoted and committed to being a family again. So that's what we're focused on. But thank you for asking the question. It's super kind. Really appreciate it. Yeah, thank you.

(APPLAUSE)

BASH: Congressman, I asked you to be brief, but I don't have to be. Is that a definitive no?

O'ROURKE: It's a definitive no.

BASH: Like never?

O'ROURKE: I mean, I -- so let me put it this way. I promise to you, and most importantly to the people of Texas, that I'll serve every single day of a six-year term in the United States Senate and I won't leave this state to go run for president.

(APPLAUSE)

BASH: And if you don't win?

O'ROURKE: If I don't win, we're back in El Paso. Yeah.

We just disagree.

He got really close in TX, has the "it" factor, raised a ton of money, etc.

Seems like many of us disagree with you on the experience thing. Obama was an outsider who won. Trump (shudders) was an outsider who won.

I think America has wanted a fresh face for a while now, and that isn't going to change.

Also, Trump won the Presidency with zero experience running an actual company, let a lone DC experience.

So, most of us see his lack of experience as a positive in winning an election.

Also, I think he'd be less likely to run for Pres had he won.

And as Legs said, politicians say they aren't going to run all the time. Especially when they are in the middle of a campaign for a different spot.

What is his next step if he doesn't run for President? He got as close as he is going to get in a statewide TX seat, so is his political career over?

No one is saying he is a lock to run or to win- its all speculation. Calm down dog.

Nixon lost for Prez in 1960 and came back in 1968 to crush it.

Reagan lost his first run for prez in 1976.

Beto ran against all odds in a deep red state and came within a few percentage points of victory. He is definitely a front runner for 2020. He's got a nationwide network of individual donors and magnetic stage presence. He's definitely a contender if you ask me.

Nixon was vice president and lost to become president - and ran again 8 years later and won. This has happened quite a few times - like 6 or 8 times. Hell Grover Cleavland was president, then lost re-election, then won the next presidential election.

Nixon did not lose an election two years before the presidential election - it was 8 years - he was a former VP and frankly he used an immoral tactic to split the country to gain power - a tactic so cynical it is still be used today. Evil genius.

>Reagan lost his first run for prez in 1976.

Lost the run for *the nomination*-- to a sitting president - and that president lost to the challenger. (Reagan probably would have lost in 1976 too - the party had too much baggage from Watergate.)

Beto ran against the odds and lost to the odds.

I think coming off a loss is a disadvantage -enthusiasm for any candidate gets tempered by a loss. Momentum can be lost - or gained - and it IS very early.

But if he's saying he's not running and people think he's being coy - then he needs to get less coy QUICKLY and get out there - CALIFORNIA primary date is in March of 2020. (I don't give a fuck about the goobers in Iowa.)

I don't know why you're splitting hairs about a loss happening at the nomination stage versus the general election.

Also, not sure if losing two years before an election is any more likely to preclude a candidate from winning than losing four years before the election.

None of these distinctions you mention seem likely to make a difference to the general electorate.

Anyway, I think Beto is a strong 2020 contender. By the same token, he will probably be able to take out Cruz in 2024, so maybe he will focus on that.

He was an incredibly popular president. Won two terms. She was obviously very visible and very believed loved during those eight years.

Gotta step buying into the narrative that the Dems can’t run on their successes. Gore fell for it 18 years ago and that’s what got us in this mess.

dems forever tossing other dems under to bus to appease repubs.

clinton ended his presidency with highest exit approval since truman. regularly in the 70s and 60s throughout his 2nd term. gore could have run on continuing the booming clinton economy. but he got scared away from being connected to an adulterer (even tho clintons approval rose *after* impeachment).

just look at nancy pelosi. obamacare is as popular as ever. even in red states. this is why red state voters approved medicaid expansion, why repub candidates had to lie about supporting pre-existing conditions, etc.

pelosi was the 2nd most instrumental person in passing obamacare (to obama himself). she is literally responsible for keeping these people alive (especially rural hospital users). instead of dems reminding everyone of this...they were steady running away from her on the campaign trail because repubs smear her.

dems gotta stop being pussies and doing repubs work for them. if you stick up for each other then other people might stick up for you too.

But it would be trolling pretty hard to the right. If we want to tone down the extreme divisiveness were experiencing now it doesn't seem to be the best idea.

But again, maybe we should be on some "fuck your feelings" and do whatever gets a win.

"...we go high"?

Plus, why would the Dems look to appease the core right voters who would NEVER vote for a Dem under any circumstances?

In response to Reply # 355

Michelle Obama. Again, I love her. It was more just a thought of how shitty they would be about it and that it would be nice if there was at least some shred of middle ground to find with these people. It's just fucking exhausting as it is now.

They'll be shitty illogical scumbags about whoever the Dem is anyway though, so I'm for it.

we saw how these mouth breathers reacted just to Michelle suggesting their kids maybe occasionally eat an apple instead of a bag of fritos, like, for their own health and well being.

and I agree completely with the "so what? fuck them" mindset, but I also agree heavily with the not knowing if i have the stomach for this comment below.

WV state legislator who helped organize the big teacher's strike. This seems like a chance for him to get his name out there and maybe get some money, but nothing else. He's trying to go from STATE legislator to the White House AND he voted for Trump in 2016. Why not try for something in state, maybe WV could finally have a Dem senator who doesn't suck for once.

In response to Reply # 330

i think he actually fucked up by making such a pronounced anti-trump turn in his campaign.

even dems running in places a lot less pro-trump than west virginia made a concerted effort not to make trump a focal point of their campaigns. but ojeda did. in a state that voted for trump by the highest margin in the nation. he had to have cost himself a good amount of voters by going anti-trump.

i was on the bandwagon a bit after he rose up through the teachers strike.

but he became more focused on turning himself into an angry anti-establishment bomb thrower type character instead of an issue-related 'populist'.

republicans had a pretty funny attack against him with a pro-wrestling angle. and it was actually good/effective because he was more over-the-top than they were.
