"Hillary Herpes: New email investigation opening"

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/fbi-to-conduct-new-investigation-of-emails-from-clintons-private-server/2016/10/28/0b1e9468-9d31-11e6-9980-50913d68eacb_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_fbi-130pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory

The FBI will investigate whether additional classified material is contained in emails sent using Hillary Clinton’s private email server while she was secretary of state, FBI director James Comey informed congressional leaders Friday.

The announcement appears to restart the FBI’s probe of Clinton’s server, less than two weeks before the presidential election, an explosive development that could shape the campaign’s final days.

In a letter to congressional leaders, Comey said that the FBI had, in connection with an “unrelated case,” recently “learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the Clinton investigation.”

Comey indicated that he had been briefed on the new material yesterday. “I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation,” he wrote.

The FBI had previously closed its investigation in July with no charges, though Comey had concluded there had been classified content exchanged on the server and that Clinton had been “extremely careless.”

A Clinton campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

...technically they never close them, that is. They just decide whether or not to prosecute.

All they're doing here is investigating whether these new emails are relevant to the earlier investigation. As they should.

But they looked at tens of thousands of emails in the original investigation, and none of them provided grounds for a prosecution. It's ridiculous that anyone would assume this handful of new ones will be any different.

and that the investigation was was not "reopened" as stated and that the media ran with.

tbh, the investigation wasn't ever technically closed despite the FBI clearing her on the emails/server issue.

this is nothing to see (which you can clearly decipher if you read Comey's letter) and now that it's come out this is from emails that Hillary didn't even send related to Huma Abedin's use of a computer belonging to that idiot Anthony Weiner? well, the picture is even more clear that this is nothing.

Clintons right hand woman said she gave them all the devices that had emails.

A probe for Carlos Danger's sexting photos turned up thousands of emails.

That's a fucking problem whether there is something on them or not. It's all they talked about in the Sunday morning shows.

Now Trump looks like all his talk about these emails and rigged elections looks credible even if there is nothing on these emails.

and i'm not shocked that Abedin would have thousands of Clinton emails on the computer.

that's what i mean when i say "this is nothing."

of course they are gonna turn it into something though.

So they were filiming a doc on his run for mayor and kept filming when the scandal broke? is that what happened?

not sure where else to ask this and I don't think its worth its own thread...

Where were these leaks during the primary?

I'm legit curious what the thinking/theories/etc would be....

Why are they doing the "people's work" now, when it essentially can only benefit Trump?

Why not do this sooner?

From what I understand, I guess Wiki just gets stuff from anonymous sources...so is really Russia then?

Sorry I haven't really been following it but I'm over here scratching my head...wikileaks trying to get Trump elected huh?

Some of it might be politics but Wikileaks revealed plenty of stuff about Bush propaganda on the Iraq war that Democrats had no problem with at the time. I think they are only concerned with revealing what government chooses to hide, bad behavior gets brought out of the shadows into the light

I'm certain you understand that the Clinton family has been less than honest and facing a lot of scrutiny for their behavior for 20+ years....

Maybe, just maybe, Trump and Clinton are corrupt, dishonest, unethical piles of crap?

lots of cognitive dissonance in this election because of unnecessary partisan ties

I think that's likeliest of all

Idiots and Libertarians (a subset of the world's idiots).

Yeah, it was more fun when they were going after Bush. But it was always clear that their methods and priorities were questionable, and that they were more interested in self aggrandizement than in finding or reporting the truth.

Investigations, by the way, that have cost taxpayers $500 million. Not a single one has culminated with a criminal charge for Hillary Clinton. So that means that either a) she's the absolute best at protecting her secrets and would be therefore the MOST qualified to run counterintelligence as Commander in Chief, negotiate trade deals, etc. or b) she's actually nowhere near as dirty as her opposition would suggest, and on top of that has been the most poised person we've ever seen, which would give her a huge negotiation advantage against Putin, Un, et al.

If it was Wikileaks themselves who hacked the emails then you may have a point. But someone else hacked the emails and then gave the info to Wikileaks to distribute. Whoever did the hack (rumored to be Russian backed but who knows) likely wants Trump to win so the timing of the release to Wikileaks is strategic to hurt Hillary and help Trump.

It was probably the same thing on the other side with the Trump hit mic taped conversation.

It's the other side of the fact that a week ago Hillary had 90% of the Democrats and Trump only had 81% of Republicans. People mostly come home in the end, and Trump had more people out there ready to come home.

Like old girl ain't never delete an email ever?

What I wonder is if there are any NEW emails in this bunch. I can imagine that maybe she had an outlook account set up on a personal laptop at home that she used occasionally. If that is the case it would have every email that I have on my regular laptop duplicated.

I guess the concern for HRC's team would be this random laptop would have emails that they scrubbed from all the laptops that they delivered to the FBI.

like most Clinton scandals.

Notice how nobody even reports on what was done wrong, or what harm might have been done. The reports are on "ongoing questions", "public perceptions", or other vague bullshit.

I hate that the "mythical" Clintons are the ones that are always targeted.

this is so verifiably fake and transparent, just like Benghazi.

just to give the right wing more easily-digestible fuel for the myth they have constructed. EMAILS EMAILS EMAILS BENGHAZI BENGHAZI PEE PEE!! *Alex Jones voice*

Anyone in the Bureau who knew about this could have leaked it three days before the election, instead of 11 days before. There's a reasonable argument that it's better to get it out sooner rather than later. He maybe should have gone about it differently, maybe should have given better context, maybe should have never commented on the case in the first place, maybe should have stayed silent and only given explanation after leaks occurred. But I'll admit, it's complicated, and every scenario has downsides and could look partisan.

The real pieces of shit here are Jason Chaffetz for forwarding the letter to the press, along with the outright lie that the investigation of Clinton is being reopened, and the press for falling for that obvious lie and letting it set the tone for all further reporting.

The fact that they were in the military means absolutely nothing.

There's no point even arguing this anymore, but it's been widely reported from the very beginning that these kinds of allegations never lead to prosecutions.

CNN severs ties with Donna Brazile
By HADAS GOLD 10/31/16 12:36 PM EDT
CNN says it is "completely uncomfortable" with hacked emails showing former contributor and interim DNC chair Donna Brazile sharing questions with the Clinton campaign before a debate and a town hall during the Democratic primary, and has accepted her resignation.
Hacked emails posted by WikiLeaks show Brazile, whose CNN contract was suspended when she became interim DNC chair over the summer, sharing with the Clinton campaign a question that would be posed to Hillary Clinton before the March CNN Democratic debate in Flint, and sharing with the campaign a possible question prior to a CNN town hall also in March.
In a statement, CNN spokeswoman Lauren Pratapas said that on Oct. 14, the network accepted Brazile's resignation.
"On October 14th, CNN accepted Donna Brazile’s resignation as a CNN contributor. (Her deal had previously been suspended in July when she became the interim head of the DNC.) CNN never gave Brazile access to any questions, prep material, attendee list, background information or meetings in advance of a town hall or debate. We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor," Pratapas said.
In a tweet, Brazile thanked CNN and her now former colleagues there.
"Thank you @CNN. Honored to be a Democratic Strategist and commentator on the network. Godspeed to all my former colleagues," she wrote.
A CNN employee, speaking on background, suggested Brazile may have met the woman who was supposed to pose the question about lead poisoning during a service event planned the day before the debate.
As for the town hall event, a follow up email from Brazile posted by WikiLeaks on Monday and other emails obtained by POLITICO seem to point to Roland Martin, a TV One host who was co-moderating the Town Hall, as the source of the questions.

That probably won't stop her from continuing to claim one anyway. Hell, GWB lost the popular vote in 2000 and then proceeded to govern as if he had a mandate, so anything is possible.

i mean, can anyone literally picture this assclown governing?

he literally knows jack shit about politics...like, what would he even do?

also, Trump is currently LADEN with scandals of his own but somehow only the "woke" people have it on their radar.

something is fishy as fuck.

He has scandals but they aren't real scandals that may have put the country in danger.

voters also raise the bar for career politicians.

Almost down to the 73%. She was 75% earlier today

I'm scared. 90.7% on October 17th to 74.1% right today. That momentum is real.

And he won handily.

538 currently has Hillary at 75.4%.

And Hillary's lead in national polls, even after all this, is bigger than Obama's was in 2012.

I'm not trying to pretend things are going fine. But let's not hyperventilate.

And instruct all her surrogates to focus on this all week. Because I had forgotten about it myself and I'm guessing alot of other people have.

Also, she might want to consider making up an outright lie. About something unfalsifiable, so Trump can't refute it. It might be necessary (though I do think she'll win without having to resort to that, but it's going to be way closer than she wants, the way it's going.)

She did but it was too late. She fought, shrugged, joked, blamed the Russians...

It's not even really about what's in the emails.. (for the FBI it is) but it shows a blatant disregard for the laws and we have 26 years of people fuming over the Clintons toeing the line.

Just a bad look and some were saying it could end up ruining the election.

Let's hope it blows over.

basically comey rushed to tell us, there are emails, i dont know what's in them, i dont even know if she sent them or from where,
but maybe they may be relevant
knowing full when what the repercussions of this would be

but... to be totally honest, anyone whose mind is going to be 'changed' by this
and would vote trump on nov 8 is a piece of shit anyway
because these emails should never have been as big a deal as they have been made to be
they would've been a big deal if it was shown that there were repercussions (e.g. if terrorists invaded america because...)
but nothing.
we've all been running on the same spot for over a year now
and a few days to the election, once again we are rehashing stupidity.

I will be honest, I am totally okay with the way clinton has run this campaign.
if the american electorate decides to reward an incompetent asshole the presidency
it will just be proof that the american electorate is just stupid enough to vote against its own self interest.

and that too, i guess, is democracy

then the anti-Clintons would be up in arms about it.

he created the whole mess by telling Congress he'd update them if more email was found. and then by having that press conference to announce the FBI wasn't going to recommend the DOJ prosecute Clinton. so now when some more email was found that might maybe be relevant to his investigation he had to disclose as he promised he would. and to avoid it looking like he was doing something to favor Clinton he had to send the letter before the election b/c he's been accused of favoring her by not recommending any criminal charge.

and Trump's camp is so desperate and the other anti-Clintons are so awful that they're all just chomping at the bit for SOMETHING to use against her. so of course they ate this little trifle up. but ultimately it's nothing.

fuck you.

i don't think he needed to make that promise - i'm not sure though. if more email had been found that could be linked to that previous investigation of course that case could've been reopened. but ultimately that investigation was part of a case the FBI had developed in order to turn over the result to DOJ. it wasn't a Congressional investigation. well, Congress investigated the FBI's recommendation to DOJ but Congress wasn't investigating Clinton's email, per se. so i think Comey could've testified about that recommendation and left it alone. but he added that little nugget and so here we are.

fuck you.

I think the attacks on Comey are overblown, I think the idea that this will influence the election seems overblown. Comey's email didn't say anything other than they found a laptop which MAY have emails that the investigation MAY not have seen before.

My brother has a theory that the media is always going to make sure the election is close and something of a horserace and when it seemed like Clinton was getting to far ahead of Trump the media is going to do something that makes it seem tighter than it is.

There just is so little information for people to get so worked up about.

Because, for the sake of argument, assume he has no such ties: how can you prove that type of negative? It's unfalsifiable, like I said up top.

The only problem is this is not a new charge. People have been accusing him of this for the last 4 or 5 months.

up. Accuse Trump of murdering a prostitute, or defrauding a specific person out of their life savings, or using racial or homophobic epithets, anything. I don't think any lie would be too big or too crazy, with basically 7 days left. This thing is getting away from her. It's been 3 whole days now and here margins are getting too slim for her to have much confidence in them.

FBI Director James Comey argued privately that it was too close to Election Day for the United States government to name Russia as meddling in the U.S. election and ultimately ensured that the FBI's name was not on the document that the U.S. government put out, a former bureau official tells CNBC.

enough of pendulum of defecting voters in swing states like North Carolina, Florida, or Nevada to make her lose those states.

Of the 3 i think Florida will be the closest victory for her.

I believe she will still win over 300(im predicting 308) electoral votes and all this hoopla will be for nothing.

Ding like a motherfucker, the only reason it is close is because of two trash candidates...but I do agree that most people just vote (R) and (D) without much thought about it

but as a counterpoint.....

Bernie wins, he blows Trump away, (DNC crony corporate ties wouldn't allow this)

(R) nominates someone like Rubio, I think he beats HRC

Trump is so awful, that if HRC and her shitty character, does lose to him she should probably retire from politics forever

what DO you do if you're HRC and you lose to Trump?

I can't imagine her continuing a career in politics. How? Her loss would overshadow practically everything she's ever done/will do career wise.

none of it has anything to do with trustworthiness though so i'm not sure a "CrookedBernie" would have worked

You just never saw it because nobody has ever had a reason to attack him. Hillary couldn't risk offending the millennials.

For Trump the strategic situation is entirely different. Everyone in America would have known about the creepy shit Bernie wrote in the seventies, and that would be just the beginning.

And besides, as we've already learned from the Clinton campaign, and as we clearly saw in both Obama runs, the "scandals" around Democrats don't need to have any basis in reality anyway. It's all about narrative and perception. And whatever you might think, it's much easier to paint a negative narrative about a granola socialist from Vermont than a popular Secretary of State (yes, she was historically popular until the Republicans turned their guns against her).

I like Bernie but he would have been exposed and behind in the polls by now.

They would effectively paint Bernie as a socialist and inexperienced on foreign policy and would have been able to convince the public it needed a more ready Commander in Chief against Isis and Syria.

They would have took apart his free college for everybody proposal by making it seem so infeasible economically that it would look like a fairytale proposal that could never happen.

He would have been too far Left for Independents to get behind in those swing states that Clinton seems to be holding.

That being said, I think Clinton would have lost to McCain in 2008. Her war vote and and being a woman with no foreign policy experience would have doomed her. Her being a former Secetary of State is the great evener for her.

Hillary is struggling to beat the worst candidate in modern presidential politics - and it's because her unfavorables are historic.

Bernie wouldn't have to deal with this kind of onslaught because he doesn't toe/cross the line like the Clintons (nor does Obama, btw).

You never have seen Obama involved in theses kinds of scandals and/or inquiries of impropriety - and it's certainly not because trolls didn't try their hearts out to find dirt on him. He just didn't toe/cross the line like Clinton has done.

The danger here is that her staunchest defenders can *never* admit that there's something off about how she has conducted herself. They can't even admit that her saying we should have "determined the winner" in the Palestine elections was problematic. The 'she can do no wrong in my eyes' camp are setting us up for an Administration who doesn't have to hold itself accountable.

.....but how politics works in this country is the problem. Sure, for our current setup there is no better candidate. But we want a new way of doing things. That was the entire point.

I mean, I definitely wouldn't lump them with Trump heads but hardcore Hil supporters are not worth talking to.

It took a matter of minutes for you to be called naive just because of this post.

As they talk down to you about politics and how the world works, they tend to forget it themselves.

Hilary is/and has been extremely disliked. It doesn't matter why, it doesn't matter if you agree...people don't like her. Blame Fox News, blame whoever...it doesn't matter WHY. People don't like her or trust her.

Yes, Bernie or another candidate would have faced an onslaught of negativity.

BUT

Hilary already started at being unlikable. Everything that comes out, false alarm or not, just piles on.

A Bernie (and I have to put this in for Hil supporters- I'm not Bernie head) or another candidate wouldn't have STARTED with a high unfavorable rating.

Anyone who says she is VERY lucky she isn't facing a sane Repub candidate is 1000% right.

On the flip side, the Dems should be coasting to this thing and winning the Senate.

But they anointed the wrong candidate because it was her turn.

And again, she is the WRONG CANDIDATE because weather you like it or not, she is not liked or trusted.

Simple and plain.

The Dems should have actually thought about their purpose- winning elections.

But Democrats gonna Democrat.

All candidates before they are on the national stage have low unfavorability ratings. Doesn't mean they are well liked, it's means that they are unknown.

Track the unfavorability ratings of John McCain, Mitt Romney; John Kerry or any other presidential nominee at the start of the year they ran for president and track it until election time.

As they are chosen as their party nominee and we get into the mud slinging and scrutiny of the election their favorability drops.

What makes Hillary unique is that she is a candidate who has been on the national stage for 20 years so she starts out where most other candidates end up in terms of favoravibilty.

Took look at Bernies Sanders favorability in the primaries is just meaningless. He was a complete unknown on the national stage.

is that the Clinton family has been in the news for impropriety for more than two decades...she has been looked at as dishonest, unethical, and lacking integrity for some time now....unfavorables have been there

it's like when Repubs nominated Romney after bashing the ACA as "Obamacare" when they knew it was based on "Romneycare" in MA ...a lot of people saw through that nonsense

just dumb shit and unnecessary hubris by both major parties trying to ram someone through instead of trying to find the best person to win the election

Most American voters don't, though. Trump's brand of faux populism sells much better.

>Hillary is struggling to beat the worst candidate in modern
>presidential politics - and it's because her unfavorables are
>historic.

It's funny that you think Trump is a bad candidate. Just because he's a monster doesn't mean he's a bad candidate. Republicans win by exploiting people's hunger for simple answers. And nobody in modern politics works up the rubes more effectively than Donald Trump. Case in point:

>Bernie wouldn't have to deal with this kind of onslaught
>because he doesn't toe/cross the line like the Clintons (nor
>does Obama, btw).
>
>You never have seen Obama involved in theses kinds of scandals
>and/or inquiries of impropriety

Did you happen to see the 2008 campaign? Or the 2012 campaign? Or the approval numbers that he's had for most of his presidency? Benghazi was an Obama "scandal" before it became a Clinton "scandal."

>- and it's certainly not
>because trolls didn't try their hearts out to find dirt on
>him. He just didn't toe/cross the line like Clinton has
>done.

No, he just happened to be running at a time when it was fresh on people's minds how dangerous the Republican platform is, rather than a time when liberals have such hubris that they think the public will follow them wherever they want to go.

>The danger here is that her staunchest defenders can *never*
>admit that there's something off about how she has conducted
>herself.

It's easy to be dubious of such claims when her attackers, from the right and from the left, put so much more effort into pushing lies and insinuations about her than into coming up with any kind of plausible policy arguments.

>They can't even admit that her saying we should have
>"determined the winner" in the Palestine elections was
>problematic. The 'she can do no wrong in my eyes' camp are
>setting us up for an Administration who doesn't have to hold
>itself accountable.

Putting aside the obvious questions about your factual assertion, if you actually think THAT is the kind of issue that matters to voters in 2016, then you're a living example of exactly the kind of hubris that will hand Obama's legacy to Donald Trump.

last under the real scrutiny of the media focused on him 24/7 like they have done with HRC and Trump. And HRC treated Bernie the way Rubio treated Trump, with kid gloves.

When he was in the same position Obama was in 2008, Bernie failed where Obama prevailed, yet he would have been the guy who was best of all. SMH.

(largely to slow what I believe has been a coronation-by-proxy for Hillary), I agree.

I don't think he would have fared well in the general.

but it kind of shows you how Obama was the last semblance of a "bench" of Presidential hopefuls in the Democratic Party. They are severely lacking in populism and charisma right now.

Before Bernie-mania hit the streets the prospective nominees for Prez were a bunch of also-ran types.

Bernie represented an ideal, and I think that's why he was so popular (and he had the DNC nipping on their heels).

they'll get away with this one, and possibly 2020, but the Democrats (IMO) are on the verge of being the New Republicans, just with 79% less racism and sexism, and 120% more neoliberalism. if they're not already there.

Rubio is an empty suit dictionary definition of political hack
but he talks a good game, looks good on TV, bilingual and proud of it, and barring the robotic malfunction can actually get his talking points across
aka he would have destroyed Hillary in the debates, it's been well documented that she was shook at little marco getting the nom

Kasich took the principled conservative never trump stand, which would have gathered him nuff votes from independents and undecideds. A popular rust belt governor like himself would run the table up there.

Either of them would have easily put her away.

Both would have been able to pull a bigger and broader coalition than Trump will EVER do.

Its the primaries and picking the most electable candidates thats screwing the Repubs up.

if the GOP had a say (and they were as dirty as the DNC were revealed to be in the primaries), the nominee would have been Rubio. a lot of people thought he'd come out the winner if not for the Trump phenomenon.

Ohio was the only state that went for Kasich, and he just happens to be their governor.

Now that he's come out as not voting for Hillary, but writing in McCain, people who probably voted for him twice are calling him a "RINO" for not going for Trump.

it isn't just the poor and poorer "working class" GOP voters, either. it's the cul-de-sac white voters who are in the upper end of the working class, income wise. basically people w/jobs as well as people w/o jobs (or w/inconsistent employers). they ain't fuckin' with no one who ain't speaking "their" language, and this year it was Trump.

the GOP knows that anti-Black racism is central to building a coalition of people to support their platform of Poo Poo. they're losing national polls/votes with the white "deplorables", and they know they need to diversify.

who better than Rubio? he could have been their "Obama". go out there like Bush and promise "compassionate conservatism" and look reasonable (like Kasich) and show that the face of the GOP doesn't necessarily need to be white.

that alone would make up for loss in the "deplorable" vote (by their measure) and their general ignoring of the black vote, by bringing more non-black POC voters who may not be all about the Democrats.

Bobby Jindal, Michael Steele, Ben "NyQuil" Carson, these were all major attempts to diversify their base. Steele is all but out the door. Carson drowning in his own NyQuil. Bobby sniffin' butane.

If not Rubio, someone like Nikki Haley who can simply "not be white" but "white-friendly" would be their best bet. After Trump, I have no idea how they pull that off without closing all the primaries.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

he will never live that down

but in general, Colin Powell has been disinterested in the Presidency for a long while; it's said his family didn't want him to run.

and we all saw what happened when he was like "who gives a shit if the President could be a Muslim"

called a RINO, a race baiter, you name it.

though he signed his name to the Decepticon cause, they don't deserve a leader like him.

Where I think we disagree is that Rubio or Kasich also would have beaten O'Malley, stomped Bernie, and probably could have even run a strong race against Obama if he could run for a third term (in fact, they probably could have beaten him too, because if Obama could run again he wouldn't be as popular as he is right now).

The fundamentals of this cycle favor Republicans. The economic recovery has been good, but easy to fault. Health care has gone well on balance by any reasonable standard, but reasonable standards aren't what we're up against. In general, it's not easy for a party to win a third term. In part this is just people's simplistic expectation for a change, but in part it's that when you're running for a third term you have to defend real policies, warts and all, against a complete fantasy of a platform from the other side.

Thankfully, though, the Republicans weren't smart enough to nominate Rubio or Kasich. Thankfully the hardcore base of that party was so isolated from the real world that they thought the general electorate would be just excited as they were by their most extreme firebrand candidate. Thankfully the Democratic party was too smart to do the same.

b/c i don't know what the public would've learned about Rubio during a general. i don't know how Rubio would've handled himself. i don't know what weaknesses of his the Clinton campaign would've exploited.

i don't see him or any of the rest of them as particularly formidable opponents. also i give Clinton and her team credit for the dismantling of Trump and his campaign. i don't see this as Trump simply imploding - Clinton and her ppl DID THAT SHIT. it's great to see. i have little doubt they could've pulled similar moves on Rubio or any of the other Repugs. so i'm not sure any of them would beat her.

fuck you.

Don't get me wrong, I'm voting for Hilldawg but I have no faith in her or the next 4 years.

I just hate how we had a chance to go left and bitched up because folks are scared of real progress.

Sure Bernie has some things that would make it hard to win over a few independents but Hillary is hated by working class whites and I think that may hurt her chances in Ohio, Michigan, PA. She stared with high negatives and no trust. That's fucking hard to climb out of but gains Trump it would be a cakewalk for Bernie.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/10/why_are_we_talking_about_hillary_clinton_s_emails.html

Donald Trump Is on the Ballot Next Week. Why Are We Talking About Emails?
One candidate is a threat to the very workings of government, and it’s not the one who maybe, possibly, tried to thwart FOIA.

There was a fleeting moment several weeks ago when America finally seemed to get serious. Donald Trump had coasted through the early primary season with soft press coverage and insufficient scrutiny. Even as late as this summer, he was going on late-night shows and sitting for lollipop interviews, all of which had the effect of normalizing him, of inviting him into the national living room. But then things started to change. The major newspapers, especially the Washington Post and the New York Times, began examining his finances more extensively. Typically ovine cable news anchors, either embarrassed by their past coverage or fed up with Trump’s racism and misogyny, dared to challenge him. (He eventually just stopped appearing on their shows.) And the infamous Access Hollywood tape, followed by a depressing stream of women coming forward to say that Trump’s sexual assault boast was a rare and grotesque moment of honesty from him, caused even many Republicans to wince. It wasn’t long ago that GOP officeholders were intoning grave sentiments about what electing a man like Trump might mean for the country, its values, and its traditions.

And yet, here we are just eight days from the election and Donald Trump is not even the lead story. Instead, the media—every institution from the cable news networks to the New York Times—have gone mad obsessing over the latest news about Hillary Clinton’s emails. The disgrace of this is not merely that we have no idea what the latest revelation from FBI Director James Comey will or will not tell us about Clinton’s behavior. It is also that the entire press corps has shifted its focus to a relatively minor issue at a time when Donald Trump remains the primary threat to American democracy.

The blame for the latest scandal—and here I refer to the hyperventilating about the emails, rather than the emails themselves—can be assigned to any number of people. Hillary Clinton made the decision in the first place to use a private email server, which, however commonplace, is an affront to the Freedom of Information Act and record retention and all that boring good-government stuff that doesn’t seem to come up much in any of the hootin’ and hollerin’ over the emails. Clinton also spent much too long equivocating over how to respond. And on Friday, after Comey’s letter to Congress became public, her campaign decided that the best approach was to attack the FBI director, practically begging him to reveal more about his investigation. Maybe this was the right move, but the strategy certainly gave the story enough oxygen to last the weekend and perhaps the whole of this week. The press was already anxious for what we tiresomely insist on calling an October surprise, and the fact that large chunks of the Democratic Party decided to go to war with the FBI director only made the controversy a juicier one. Now it seems clear that the Justice Department itself is riven with internal disagreement over investigating Hillary Clinton, and these turf wars will of course play out in the press over the next few days, with volleys and return volleys of bitchcakes quotes from anonymous insiders.

Enough is enough. Journalism is about choosing what to cover as much as it is deciding how to cover something.
There are important issues in play here. The evident problems at the Justice Department are not only significant, but another sign of the great enervation of our institutions at a moment when their very legitimacy is being called into question. ThinkProgress’ Judd Legum suggests Comey was overcorrecting in response to a monthslong assault by the GOP on the FBI’s authority. “Republicans worked the refs at the FBI,” Legum tweeted, “and it worked.” This is something like what happened to Clinton in the 1990s, when she responded to attacks of all kinds from the right by retreating into a garrison mentality, which itself became the subject of attacks of all kinds from the right (and which probably had something to do with her unfortunate decision to use a private email server).

All of these things are worth covering in some fashion. But enough is enough. Journalism is about choosing what to cover as much as it is deciding how to cover something. (Jerry Seinfeld has an old joke about how incredible it is that every day on Earth the amount of news that occurs—no more, no less—always fits precisely in the newspaper.) Donald Trump’s sins against every building block of good government—from hiring competent people to making any effort whatsoever at transparency to distinguishing one’s self-interest from the larger interest—render Clinton’s shortcomings minuscule and insignificant in comparison. We are extremely close to the most important American election since God knows when, an election whose reverberations are almost impossible to imagine, let alone measure. Let’s focus on that for a change.

http://www.npr.org/2016/11/01/500297580/more-surprises-fbi-releases-files-on-bill-clintons-pardon-of-marc-rich

More Surprises: FBI Releases Files On Bill Clinton's Pardon Of Marc Rich

Just one week from Election Day, the FBI has made a somewhat puzzling release of information related to a controversial pardon Bill Clinton made on his last day in office almost 16 years ago.

On Tuesday, the law enforcement agency released documents related to the former president's pardon of Marc Rich, a former hedge-fund manager who had been indicted on multiple counts of tax evasion, wire fraud and racketeering.

Hillary Clinton's campaign immediately questioned the release, which came from an FBI Twitter account that had been dormant for more than a year up until this past Sunday. The new documents come just days after FBI Director James Comey announced last week that the agency was reviewing new emails possibly related to the former secretary of state's private server. Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon called it an "odd" decision.

In a statement late Tuesday evening, the FBI said the files were part of a routine release of information that had been requested multiple times under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA):

"The FBI's Records Management Division receives thousands of FOIA requests annually which are processed on a first in, first out (FIFO) basis. By law, FOIA materials that have been requested three or more times are posted electronically to the FBI's public reading room shortly after they are processed. Per the standard procedure for FOIA, these materials became available for release and were posted automatically and electronically to the FBI's public reading room in accordance with the law and established procedures."

The 129 pages from the 2001 investigation are heavily redacted. At the time of the pardon, Rich was an international fugitive who had fled to Switzerland. His ex-wife had donated to the Democratic National Committee, the Clinton Presidential Library and Hillary Clinton's New York Senate campaign, raising suspicion about the pardon. The federal investigation was closed in 2005 without charges, and Rich died in 2013.

Clinton's former White House chief of staff, John Podesta, is now his wife's campaign chairman. He testified before Congress that White House aides had urged Clinton not to pardon Rich. Former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder was then a deputy attorney general and was advising Clinton on pardons.

There is a connection between Comey and Rich, too. As Bloomberg Politics noted, Comey was the prosecutor in the case against Rich from 1987 until 1993, and then also took over the investigation into President Clinton's pardon in 2002 when he was the U.S. attorney for Manhattan. In a 2008 letter, Comey wrote he was "stunned" by the Rich pardon.

On Sunday, the FBI also tweeted out eight pages of documents related to GOP nominee Donald Trump's late father, Fred. They pertained to a tax case he once testified in and several real estate deals.

Sexism, ageism or just remembering her shitty attitude towards Secret Service when she was First Lady...

Ionno... also read somewhere that the WH stopped following Hillary on twitter.

Maybe it's all rumors and drama for the media but I wouldn't be surprised if people are backing away because there is something funky in these emails.

Such a weird swing in the last week. Something is up...

It's like preseason rankings in college football. Who gives a shit what the polls are first week. All that really matters is the last set of rankings before bowl selection so why do we put so much stock in early polls?

Peep the link to early voting numbers. The numbers aren't pretty. Even though we see leads by Dems in most of them the info that follows tells us most of the numbers are down from 2012.

It really comes down to the firewall Clinton has and trying to get AZ or Texas was a waste of money IMO. Hilldawg needs to go to Michigan, PA, Ohio and NC. Fuck a blowout just win the damn thing.

249. "you're not wrong, but Hillary is the trees"
In response to Reply # 235

keeping you from seeing the forests.

1. I have never supported Donald Trump, and I believe he is a disaster candidate. It was not I that lent him support, but rather all-in Hillary types who pushed my narrative into being in support of Trump. Almost EXACTLY what I predicted, included Rich Comey Quan pulling a fast one at the end is materializing.

2. It's not a scandal of just "e-mails". There are legit revelations in what has been disclosed, and all we have heard from the DNC and Clinton camp is "RUSSIA" and "nothing to see here". Meanwhile, 2 top DNC officials have had to step down based on the validity of the documents.

3. Hillary won the Presidency of the Democratic Party, but as we screamed months ago America is more than the Democratic Party. There is a majority of INDEPENDENTS who have decided by their party affiliation that they do not subscribe to the Democratic way of doing politics. To put the most Democrat of new Democrats + muddy scandals = the close race you have now.

4. We have always been against Trump, from the very beginning. The problem you are having now is that you disarmed the negatives of Trump because Hillary is exposed to all of the negative criticisms as well (fair and unfair). Unfortunately this stuff sticks to Hillary, mostly because she is so bad about just addressing it head on when it happens. However, she was always the weaker candidate in the general for this election, imho. Once it was decided to push her forward, you lost the legitimacy of making this election about stopping Trump. Hopefully the numbers will be there next week for avoiding Trump.

5. If you truly believe Bernie was the weaker option, then we are just destined for this outcome because most of the metrics have been in place. The needle hasn't moved. Hillary's supporters still support her, and Trump's still support him. The indifferent have scattered because they COULD have come under the umbrella of the Democratic Party, but were discarded. Now there is a bevy of otherwise supporters and voters who may not even show up to vote at all.

This whole thing could have been handled so much better. Sad part is no matter who wins, the 1% are protected. TPP is on the way, DAPL is on the way, Time Warner - ATT is on the way. They don't live in our communities so all the disaster won't effect them. And the best part? We get to blame any fall out on PROGRESSIVES, which should set us up nicely for the next 50 years.

"The investigation pivots
In the normal world, when you are investigated and exonerated, the matter is dropped. But since we know the Clintons are guilty, if Hillary didn’t do anything wrong at Benghazi and didn’t withhold information from investigators, there must be some other problem.

Thus the origin of the classified information scandal in which we have learned that some email threads that Clinton participated in contained classified information or documents.

Something missing from 95 percent of Clinton emails coverage is the fact that the use of a private email server has literally no bearing on these allegations. You are not supposed to discuss classified information over email, point blank. You’re not supposed to use a .gov account or a Gmail account or a private server or any other kind of email. The government has special secure channels that you are supposed to use for classified information.

This is important because it leads to the conclusion that where the investigators left the matter — there was some classified information mixed in with Clinton’s work emails but not in a criminally culpable way — is fairly banal.

And note that by the time we reach this point, we are multiple degrees of separation away from the original charge. There was no wrongdoing related to Benghazi. There was no cover-up. Then a separate inquiry into whether email was being knowingly misused for classified communication concluded, again, that it wasn’t."

"email was being knowingly misused"

they would have to prove it was intentional

which, IMO, when someone sets up a private server, shouldn't be too hard to prove intent

just clarifying

it's not that there wasn't wrong doing and/or criminal acts

it's that they don't feel they could get a conviction.

of course there was something criminal going on. some wrong doing.

right?

of course b/c - Hillary.

...which is the point of the article ("the Prime Directive of Clinton investigations: We know the Clintons are guilty; the only question is what are they guilty of and when will we find the evidence?").

she's doing SOMETHING criminal even if you don't know what. SOMETHING. she has to be. even if there's no proof...she's up to SOMETHING.

something.

It's abundantly clear that certain people within the FBI have a vendetta against the Clintons. Supposedly Comey sent his vague letter because he was afraid agents would leak information. It shouldn't be at all surprising that an agent who would leak something would also be willing to make vague, unfalsifiable, unattributed statements to Fox News.

This is just Fox being Fox. I just hope the rest of the press doesn't take the bait (maybe a vain hope).

There really isn't a story here. No sourcing, no specifics, not even past accusations (on this subject) to make the story sound vaguely plausible. So far it's just something Brett Baier heard from a guy.

It's looking like the kind of journalistic fools-gold that commonly comes out at this point in a campaign. Nothing to get worked up over.

I doubt anything official happens before the election.

I also think this type of late news helps with the GOP voter who said they could never vote Trump. Maybe they have been lying all this time but I definitely think the rigged talk and these last few days have motivated some of them to vote against Hillary.

I wouldn't too be so surprised if they did, but they haven't yet and they don't seem to have any reason to. There's nothing to report except the BS "questions are swirling" line. But they're saying that anyway. Even among the fake scandals they already have, there are more plausible ones.

Baier retracts the story:

https://www.rawstory.com/2016/11/oops-fox-anchor-retracts-claim-of-likely-clinton-indictment-after-conservatives-sites-go-wild/

Brian Williams just reported sources in the FBI saying the Clinton Foundation case "has not moved an inch." A description that just happens to match all the previous reporting.

Then he interviews Kellyanne Conway, whose first response was "It makes no difference. The damage to Hillary Clinton has already been done."

That's not to say it's wrong. There are valid reasons for the differences, and much argument over methodologies.

NYTimes Upshot still has Hillary's odds at 86%, and Sam Wang (who I've always considered the most sophisticated of the bunch) actually still has her odds in the high nineties!

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/upshot/presidential-polls-forecast.html
http://election.princeton.edu/

I'll admit I was a little shocked when I looked up Wang's number. And even though I respect Wang's methods, I don't take his number as anything definitive. But it's what the model says, and it's been a good model in the past.

Despite the ugly week for Clinton, the fact remains that even if Trump won ALL of the close states, that would still leave him a few electoral votes behind the majority. He still needs to run the table on the close states, AND win a state where he's currently significantly behind, either by means of a late surge, or a significant polling error.

High 80's and 90's seem a little slanted but maybe they know something Nate doesn't know.

I honestly think Nate is covering his ass because the numbers look a little crooked.

Maybe all the Dems are waiting until Tuesday to vote but early returns are down for Dems in the CNN link I posted in here or the other Hillary thread.

at the aggregators. That's kinda the whole point. Essentially they come up with a statistical model at the start of the race, write a computer code to evaluate that statistical model with each new set of polling data, and each day they post the output of that code to their sites.

So as long as you believe that they aren't changing their model on the fly, then there isn't any way for anyone to cover their asses. These are not prognostications.

The differences in the results are not due to different choices in interpreting new data, they're from different expectations, at the beginning of the race, about what data should be weighted most heavily.

He does have paths.

And I do think Nate's model is largely based, as he says, on the sheer number of undecided voters and the amounts of unreliable polling in certain states. He's less confident because there's less hard data to give him reason to lock in states for Hillary. Which I think is a safe assumption.

He's also one of the few pollster guys to acknowledge that one simply shouldn't treat this election like any other election in recent memory because of the low approval ratings of both candidates and the volatility/extremism of Trump. It's thrown a monkey wrench into usual polling expectations-- which I also think is a safe thing to say.

I'm still hopeful-- praying is more like it-- but I'll be on edge til the results are in. Shit is just too close. And regardless of whether Hillary wins or not, this country will place an embarrassing amount of votes for this lunatic, and I'm really disgusted to be an American about now.

He's just slightly to the left of Hillary - and I do think he'd have been slaughtered by the GOP's dirty tricks machine. Woman and email are dirty words to some now - but SOCIALIST?? He would carry any swing state.

We'll never know because HE COULDN'T EVEN WIN THE NOMINATION.

The scary thing is that people like Trump. He's odious. The worst kind of bad salesman. He's Limbaugh without the charm.

If Trump beats Hillary, there is literally nothing we could have done.

She won the primary fair and square*

She didn't have any bias or leverage in pushing her to the finish line.

She was the presumptive nominee even before Cali voted, and she got 3 million more votes!

If Trump wins, it was just his time, fair and square. Bernie wouldn't have been better (though he polled ahead of him by 15 points....oops, polls don't matter, forgot).

Yeah, if Trump wins, there is nothing we could have done. It is what it is. I mean yeah there is a huge chunk of people dying to vote for another candidate with no baggage, political experience, and functioning competency, but Bernie so would have failed in that environment.

Hope she doesn't lose. It's her's to win. I mean - it IS Trump.

one is pro-fracking, the other wants it banned. One is against single payer, the other is for. One is anti-TPP, the other thinks its the gold standard (oops, I mean after it meets her standard, when she's election)

that is like saying being pro-choice is slightly to the left of pro-life. They are literally opposites on may issues. Just because they "talk" about the issues doesn't mean they are on the same page.

It is what it is though. As long as we don't get Trump I suppose, which is what all this has been about anyway.

Not on some conspiracy shit, but as a "real Democrat" she lost almost half of her party and fell short of 2383 in the. Primary. How does THAT make her stronger? The stronger candidate is the one who had NONE of the advantages, all of the bias against them, all of the momentum leading into the general, and almost TIED the person who we have known for 20+ years. She was NOT the stronger candidate.

The latest polls aren't looking good. Trump now up in New Hampshire. Tied in Colorado. Nevada seems to have taken a swing in Trump's direction. Florida is up in the air.

Clinton needs to put all her resources in North Carolina. If she gets that, I think she's good to go.

I like FiveThirtyEight a lot. I've read them regularly since the 2008 race, and always took them very seriously.

But I think people are being a little silly with the overreactions to a single statistical model.

Nate's not pushing an agenda. They have reasonable explanations for all the details of how they built their model. I don't know anything about HuffPo's aggregators, but the accusations that guy made against FiveThirtyEight didn't give me any confidence that the HuffPo people know what they're doing.

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/11/wikileaks-clinton-justice-department-heads-up-investigation-230643

A senior Department of Justice official gave Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman a "heads up" about new developments related to Clinton's email use as secretary of state, according to hacked emails published Wednesday by WikiLeaks.

In May of 2015, Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik emailed Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta to tell him about potential developments at an impending congressional hearing, as well as about a new development in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit for the emails Clinton turned over to the State Department from her private account.

In an email from Kadzik's personal account titled "Heads up," he wrote: “There is a oversight hearing today where the head of our Civil Division will testify. Likely to get questions on State Department emails. Another filing in the FOIA case went in last night or will go in this am that indicates it will be awhile (2016) before the State Department posts the emails.”
Podesta forwarded the email to a cadre of top Clinton aides, adding: “Additional chances for mischief.”

It appears Kadzik was referencing a subcommittee hearing on “Ongoing Oversight: Monitoring the Activities of the Justice Department’s Civil, Tax and Environment and Natural Resources Divisions and the U.S. Trustee Program.” Four DOJ officials testified at the hearing, which was publicly announced.

The WikiLeaks revelation comes as Kadzik is in the middle of another flare-up over Clinton's email, after FBI Director James Comey Friday informed Congress of possible new developments in the case.
"We assure you that the Department will continue to work closely with the FBI and together, dedicate all necessary resource and take appropriate steps as expeditiously as possible," Kadzik wrote in letters to Congress on Monday.

Podesta and Kadzik have a longstanding relationship. During Bill Clinton's presidency, Kadzik provided legal representation to Podesta during the probe that ultimately led to revelations of Bill Clinton's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinski. In a separate hacked email published by WikiLeaks, Podesta said Kadzik "kept me out of jail."

Previous WikiLeaks emails have shown an ongoing friendship between Kadzik and Podesta. They, along with other friends, had dinner together the day after Clinton testified before a House panel about the 2012 attacks on a U.S. facility in Benghazi.

Trump seized on the hacked email at a rally in Miami Wednesday.
“In a newly released email, through WikiLeaks again, we learned that Kadzik was feeding information about the investigation into the Clinton campaign,” Trump said. “And that Kadzik said, ‘It will be awhile before the State Department posts the emails.’”
“These are the people that want to run our country, folks,” Trump added. “The spread of political agendas into the Justice Department — there’s never been a thing like this that has happened in our country’s history — is one of the saddest things that has happened to our country.”
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Worked 10 modeling jobs, and earned over $20k (gross income; she apparently paid taxes, despite being an ILLEGAL), on a tourist visa. She's a citizen now, but almost certainly was asked if she'd worked ILLEGALLY in the country. If she was, then she must have lied, which from what people are saying, could justify charges of immigration fraud.

No word on whether Slovenia sent her here because she was a bad hombre.

Not that I think all the lock her up talk is anything short of dumb as hell or that shes secretly tech savvy. But the part where her legal team asked what she wanted them to do with all her personal emails and she said she didn't need them and to just delete them sounds like total BS. Not that i think anything horribly sinister took place. I think she was just trying to cover her ass for violating policy.
