Southern Rappers 100% control having fun, even at the risk of looking silly sometime.

I am sitting here listening to this DRAM album and I am like no way something like this could be made in NYC. He is so VA in the tradition of Missy Elliot, Skillz, Big Pooh (but not the Clipse).
Who was the last NYC who had real jokes? I mean was funny and fun?

Camron has been a degenerate Harlem definitely has degenerates I guess degenerates have their own type of humor but no two people from Harlem would make or laugh at the same joke, even if the mentality is understood all around
All these dudes were/are fun and hilarious at times, to me at least.
But I get the gist what youre saying. NY rappers still have that ultra competitive my borough/hood/projects is better than your borough/hood/projects DNA. If there was more unity I think more would ease up a bit.
But the NYC environment is completely different vibe than Somewhere down South and that ultimately has some influence in musical stylings.

I don't need NYC rappers to be like other rappers... just make good music and stop trying to copy southern rappers or trap rappers.

you mentioned is 40 plus. The too school for school wave is over, GS9 officially killed it. Troy Ave tried to keep it going, but he's finished. Dave East is probably the only new dude trying to be that traditional supercool NYC dude.
So you must be talking about a certain type of NYC rapper, from a certain age group, etc., because all of these newer artists I'm about to list make "fun" music. Whether you like the lyrics or beats, that's another story. But the "no fun" thing is invalid.

Man...respect yourself and have some balls to do what you love to do. It's cool to be 'fun' but it's even worse when it's forced.
Let's face it....it takes years to do what he does in that first link. It probably took him a day or two to do what he did in the second link. Which one of those things will be appreciated and respected when he looks back on himself in ten years time?

And I can GUARANTEE that whatever bills this particular rapper is getting for 'Supermario' will not do shit for him in his personal life in 10 years. What WILL matter to him at that time will be his artistic legacy. And he will be embarrassed as fuck by that shit.

There's thousands of artists that spent years honing their craft and then short-changed themselves by attempting to cash in on a short-term trend. I'm not trying to be a purist here....I'm saying that this is NOT a good business decision for someone like him.
He should do what he can do that not many other people can do. That's good business in the long run.

Logic is just trying some new things to do the same in the rap game.
He can always go back to his old style but maybe after 10 years and hours of writing rhymes for one song he said fuck it and jumped in the booth and freestyled to see if something sticks.

He puts his little twist on both, but both sounds are COMPLETELY derivative.
You respect the dated flow more than the trendy flow. That's cool. But stop making it more than it really is. That rhyming dictionary style of rapping isn't difficult to put together, especially if there's no main topic. He's just throwing old rap cliches together. He says something about doing it on your own and not needing a label to put him on (yet he's on Def Jam). He says something about being cocky like Muhammed Ali. He talks about doing a diamond heist. Then he's bumping Santana in a Copa Cabana in Havana. It's really predictable, it's filled "rappity rap" cliches, and it says NOTHING about who Logic is. The newer song has a trendy flow, and is filled with "turn up" music cliches, although I DID catch a few references that were specific to his experience. Overall, not much of a difference.
