"Why aren't you watching Blackish?"

This show is fucking hilarious.

40 Acres and a Vote?

Gotdamn they are killing it. Atlanta is good but for real ass comedy Blackish got the crown.

Some of the episodes are LITERALLY 30 minute long commercials for Disney, lol.

other half well shot/well acted, but generic family comedy. The season so far illustrates it perfectly. First two episodes (Disney, God) could have been on Full House. Next two episodes: 40 Acres, Who's Afraid Of The Big Black Man...Chappele show racism skewering level.

I guess its the equivalent of putting sugar in the medicine...but I wish they were more consistent as far as pushing that button is concerned.

Modern Family (WASP)
Fresh off the Boat (Chinese)
The Middle(Midwestern)
The Real O'Neals(Irish + a gay kid)
Dr. Ken (Korean)
Speechless (White family + a uh...differently abled kid)

and

Blackish(Bougie Black Folks)

Is it funny? Yes.

But it's not breaking as much ground as I think we want it to.

It's well written, good cast, still pretty formulaic.

Atlanta feels ground breaking. We haven't really had a black show with that tenor and style before.

We've had black family sitcoms before.

I swear yall act like me not fawning over the show means I hate it.

Where you think its gonna be about black folks's Christianity but it ended up being a very generic sitcom episode.

then you have an episode like the vote one where they make a 1 minute educational cartoon showing how fucked up America has been towards black voting rights.

Its like they have one foot in the golden age of prime tv, the other foot firmly in TGIF shows of old

Most of those shows r not formulaic.....

I mean, Modern Family was celebrated for breaking out of the normal sitcom comedy confine....Just because it's damn near 10 years old doesn't mean it's formulaic...

And Black-ish that show had a running gag on the random pitfalls of being a black man. I mean, three black characters left a little white girl on the elevator (it's a trap!) by herself just because they knew white society would scrutinize such a happening....

Nah...that's not formulaic....

They still do the TV crew conceit....I get it. When a show that was hailed as groundbreaking stays around too long its considered "A plots, B plots"....

Also, it's not about having new jokes = breaking out of the traditional sitcom mode....It's about how characters r placed under a new filter....

Black-Ish does that with a few of their breakout characters....Diane comes to mind. She's the baby girl of the family...The "Rudy"...And yet she's written as a sociopath who may or may not be the spawn of the devil....lol....Her relationship with Charlie alone colors outside the lines....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

You're right they do. It just never made sense in the first place, and doesn't do a whole lot for the comedy the way it did for the office and to a lesser extent Parks and Rec. It didn't pioneer the conceit, and it isn't great at it.

I agree that she's a great character, and the Charlie thing is lowkey the funniest running joke in the show.

I'm not convinced that it's doing anything more than giving us a quality family sitcom.

I mean I also like the Middle, but it's standing on Roseanne and Malcolm in the Middle's shoulders. There's nothing wrong with that.

That's the problem with all TV.

With the exception of sports and the occasional debate, I fully expect to catch up with everything on DVR/On Demand/Netflix.

As a result, there's no urgency to see anything.

Now I've got two dozen TV shows on my must see list.

Black-ish is one of them...

The Carmichael Show has it's moments, but like said above, Jerod is easily the weakest link in the show. He's a terrible actor. Plus, I don't like how the show is essentially a conversational-comedy. It's not plot driven in the least. There's an inciting event, and then the rest of the episode is the family sitting in that same living room debating both sides of the topic du jour. It gets old and is not creative at all. DAG and Loretta Devine are all-stars and they do the most with the material. But I feel like the show needs to expand beyond the same, tired premise each episode.

I did a podcast about The Carmichael Show earlier this year. Check it out at the links below if you're so inclined.

dude turned white guilt into popeye's fridays

but as the kids getting older some of the jokes/situations aint gonna work

atlanta falls into them weird fx network awkwardness scenes. like louie used to have.

carmichael show i only watched like twice. but that all in the family/honeymooners set up is mad stale. the parents was funny tho

i think the 2nd episode of insecure was this week, didnt catch it tho

Charlie was a little shaky when he came back on but he's finding his comedic timing back.

I even like the wonderfully ignorant brother-in-law that's on this season.

I never miss an episode.

main reason Atlanta is getting the nod is because they set the bar low as shit with Glover and he flew over it.. plus its our demo as well.

Blackish had a name that made you think corny... but this shit is the truth.

Much better guest appearances and they touch on more topics.

Not really fair to compare tho because Atlanta isn't trying to be a laugh track comedy.

all those shows are great... Folk kill me acting like all these shows come on at the same time and you gotta choose JUST one to watch...enjoy em all son....

Blackish is currently in either it's second or third season; Atlanta hasn't even aired six episodes yet if I'm not mistaken. It isn't really fair to compared one to the other just on that basis alone.

I personally mentioned it in my post because I think Atlanta is a type of show we haven't seen before.

Blackish is a family sitcom, it isn't a new formula. That doesn't mean it doesn't execute that formula very well. I mean I've had a cheeseburger before, but I can appreciate someone who can make a good cheeseburger because everyone can't.

Something about the show being an overt description of blackness feels uncomfortable. I am not sure if it is an explanatory situation for white people and a disclosure of our intimicies within black culture.

Then the kids are a little cheesy. I don't like any of them. I like Pops and his mom and Tracy Ross.

Not a fan of Wanda Sykes at all.

the grandparents, kids and sidecharacters are a riot tho. Bo's brother They Call Me Yohann is funny af too.

Unless they showed her in the break room or cafeteria it seems like an unnecessary expense to get a few jokes

Dre in the boardroom is easy and hilarious.

I also don't think Tracy is that funny on her own.
