"Why don't we address cigarette smokers like the junkies they are?"

I mean really... Smokers can't live without their fix like heroin addicts. They huddle up outside of buildings all over the country huddled in packs when it's cold out sharing "squares", looking for smoke-able butts when they run out. Their drugs are a part of their weekly budget and they will forego essentials to get their fix.

Can we stop coddling them and start calling them "junkies"?

all of this "research".

As soon as the backlash against aspartame, neotame, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium kicked into high gear we very conveniently started seeing all of this "research" on sugar talmbout how evil it is.

I don't buy it for one moment.

and they're both addictive. sugar industry acts and works in the same manner as the cigarette industry because their product is just as harmful.

and p.s., the research on how harmful sugar is goes back 40 years.

The first time in history that the FDA launched a criminal investigation into a company was for GD Searle and Donald Rumsfeld's constant push to get aspartame approved. It had already been banned by the FDA twice for it's negative health impact. The only reason it got approved was because Rumsfeld was appointed to Ronald Regan's transition team when he won election. Rumsfeld then installed people at the FDA specifically to approve aspartame.

They get angry-as-fuck when they can't have a cigarette. Ask them if they can stop and they say shit like "I can, but I don't want to"

Classic addicts.

"Junkies" might be a stretch tho... it's not like they are not washing for three days because they are busy smoking cigarettes.

I *do* hate how they try to normalize cigarette smoking, like it's some shit that *should* be accepted in everyday life. The people that walk down crowded blocks smoking and blowing smoke all around other people have been bugging me recently.

It bothers me how smokers think it is acceptable to throw their cigarette butts on the ground. They would never litter with other garbage but tossing a butt is okay.

that junkies are suffering from an addiction that's somewhat beyond their control. They need some sort of help to kick their habit. We understand that they began using whatever substance bc it feels good. And maybe they wanted an escape or to fit in and so they indulged over and over bc it feels good. And they keep going back for that good feeling. Maybe it got in the way of some part(s) of their life but they keep going back for that good feeling. We want them to quit bc we look from the outside. But we can't know all that drives them. Still we are waiting for them to see what we seem to see - that habit is a hurtful addiction that might do them harm or kill them someday. Plus the impact it could have on those around them. So we offer support when we can. But we know that offering harsh judgment won't encourage most of them to get help. It just drives them underground where they hide the addictive behavior and likely escalate it. Being underground exposes them to more dangerous substances sometimes. Which can make their whole situation worse. So we usually avoid that. But we can express our frustration with these ppl among ourselves. Which is what this post is - a temper tantrum from a whiny baby.

fuck you.

Except cigarettes are normalized. People smoke at work. In their car. In front of their kids. Outside of church. Etc.

The only people that are hiding this behaviour are minors and pregnant women. The vast majority has no shame.

It's been over here for the best part of 10 years.

Smoking is no longer considered "normal". In fact, it's a pain in the fucking ass being a smoker sometimes. I've never been an "indoor" smoker, but lots of offices don't even let you smoke out front anymore because of the "image" damage we cause to their brands.

But at least I don't spend my life with my lips glued to my own butthole treating the products of my intolerant bowels like a vintage wine.

some people are addicted to Jesus, sex, food, or cutting themselves

"junkie" has a pretty negative connotation for another human being who hasnt done anything to try harming me. I dont like how younger people act under the influence of certain drugs, but Im not talking bad about them

your coping mechanism might be different but everyone's problems come from similar places, be glad if you cant relate to certain things and try to have compassion for a person's condition

Second hand smoke harms you. Every time you inhale it you take steps towards cancer, and smokers really don't give a shit about how their addiction affects everyone around them when they get their fix.

I'll have compassion for them when they have compassion for other people that their "condition" directly affects.

if your argument was "smokers look like assholes", I get it

but second hand smoke cancer is a poor argument to stand on if kids arent involved

last week construction workers were saying hot tar on my block for multiple days, I closed my windows, held my breath or covered my nose like an adult while I was outside. the smell lingered for hours. walking through cigarette smoke for a few seconds isnt the same

Forcing that on others is punishable by law.
It's called rape.

>food

What you eat isn't bothering my body.

>or cutting themselves

My wrists are fine no matter how many times you
cut your own.

We actually have to breathe smokers' smoke sometimes tho.
As long as I don't have to breathe a person's smoke, I
give zero fucks what we call it or why they do it.

Shit should just be a given at this point:

Smokers affect everyone in their vicinity the moment they light up and exhale.

i see it all the time: a guy walks up to a complete stranger and asks "can i get a fug?"

and the man taps a newport out the pack and hands it over. might even light it for him.

that don't really work with other vices.

can you see a woman walking down the street eating a bag of chips and ask for a few?

would the guy drinking a six pack on his front steps hand you one if you asked?

i know people share drugs with friends but would they share with strangers?

would you tap on a strangers shoulder to ask for a few chips?

I was in Atlantic City smoking a black (turrible, i was young) and this dude asked for a drag from my Black n Mild.

i just gave it to him... brother looked broke and pressed.

that shit is weird.

and let a stranger bum a cig from the same guy 2 days in a row on the street, that friendliness disappears quick as shit.

You could meet someone in the bathroom of a club doing lines of coke, if you're a coke user you're probably happy to see that person and that person might just let you catch a lil of that 'cause both of y'all like to "party".

Meth and heroin addicts are like that as well. Alcoholics will pass a bottle around and talk shit, offer you a beer (unless it's their last one), or shots if they know you're also a drinker.

Drugs create camaraderie among like-minded people like any other pastime. When I'm in Cancun, Jamaica, or wherever I've met more people and had new "friends" pop up as soon as I break out a bottle of bourbon or while ordering at the resort's bars.

... but to expand on it 4 times yesterday I got the privilege of walking through clouds of second hand smoke in order to get to somewhere I had to go. The client's office was the worst of them. The gas station had a clerk and manager out front smoking while the trainee fumbled around trying to figure out how to let me use my rewards card with just the phone number. I had to go out front to tell them to get in there to help dude out 'cause they weren't about to come in until they took that last drag. In the parking lot at Wallyworld the car that parked next to me had a mother and children in the back seat. Moms was puffing up a storm, which naturally drifted out her cracked window to my face, but more disturbing than that was the fact that her kids are in there with no real ventilation (technically this was the worst offense because the kids were basically trapped breathing poisoned air). Finally I had to make a late night run to QT and, sure as shit, the clerk and a few of his cronies were outside smoking away in front of the door.

The physical urge is INTENSE but it only lasts a few weeks. When I want a cigarette now, after 8 years, it's 100% emotional, and that never goes away. It gets easier, but it never goes away.
