Right-leaning politicians worded the ballot question to intentionally draw people to vote against it, so millions either didn't vote or intentionally sabotaged their ballots in protest.

They are saying Hungary is a Christian country and Hungarians want it to stay that way.

It wasn't passed because they only had 40% of voter turnout.
They needed at least 50%

The entire vote was a PR stunt by a right wing nutjob that is falling on his face on all of his domestic positions. Because it was a stunt and because they manipulated the wording of the question on the ballot, over half the population didn't even turn up to vote and many more voted but purposefully vandalized their ballot in protest.

But keep doing whatever it is your trying to do here. Trolling a half-dead board is low-hanging fruit.

It failed because not enough showed up
Not because they didn't have a majority of voters

And although the current Hungarian government is probably the most xenophobic one in the EU right now, the far is right growing spectacularly pretty much everywhere. Fascism is alive and kicking.

West-European governments that are only letting in a relatively tiny amount themselves?
Plenty of NGO's etc. trying to persuade the oil states to play their part, but they have no way to pressure them. And countries like Lebanon already took in a disproportionately large number of refugees, who are now wasting away in huge, semi-permanent tent cities without any prospects for them or their children.

We (i.e. wealthy, post-industrial nations) can wait until the absolute monarchies of the oil states discover human rights as something to fight for, or we can put our money where our mouth is and actually work on settling as many refugees as we can. After all, these conflicts are largely the result of Western hegemony for the past couple of centuries.
