"Jordan's, Yeezys, Supreme and our youngins."

I don't have kids, but I have spoiled ass little cousin, son of my spoiled single mom cousin. He makes his mom feel bad for not getting him the 400$ sneakers every month.

Now I've already decided that my kids won't be getting that shit even if I'm pulling in 500k a year. But what I hadn't thought about until then is, how those conversations will go.

What do you guys do? What has worked?

But I want to give my kids more than that. Like my parents did that. No explanation.

Then late middle school hit, and I said fuck it. I'll get it on my own. And did some f**k shit and got distracted.

I'm moreso talking about lessons you teach on the value of money, brands, marketing and how to get that across to a young mind.

that same kid that had holes in his duck boots probably had a $700 Easton Lil League bat and a $900 custom made Nahoma infielders glove made for himself.

Dog, when you make that kinda bread, shot changes.
You begin to stop sweating shit under a certain dollar amount.

But those kids parents cared about that stuff.

As early as 10 years old I knew about Oshkosh vs Pro Wings vs Nike shoes
Or
Bugle Boy vs Wranglers vs Levis
I was born in 79

Nobody wanted $400 shoes
But niggas ain't want no damn prowings either!

Again, if a parent is making $40k a month, they not sweating no pair of Jays.

How do you make per year?
Now divide that by $40,000.
Puts shit in perspective.

Mario Lemeuix... they all, live in the town I grew up in.

now, WE were poor as shit cause most black kids parents worked at the Steel Mills but the town is one of the wealthiest in PA.

so i knew plenty of kids who grew up in big ass old mansions but they dressed bummy as shit.

they didnt ask for Jordans because they werent raised to value that shit.

sorry bruh, you arent the only one who was up on LaCoque Sportif, Paddington Bear and Osh Kosh as a youngin...

to be able to buy whatever it was they wanted.

so if what you wanted cost x number of dollars, how many hours would you have to work to be able to buy it?

now, my 2 daughters that don't work yet, i make them calculate based on my rounded up version of MD's minimum wage: $9.

my daughter that does work is still a teenager but she's always made more than minimum wage but never more than $12/hr so that's her figure.

how you feel having to work 7 or 8 days to buy 1 item? is that sustainable?

i also tell them that if they really want certain shit, the key is to earn enough money that the purchase doesn't seem stupid.

if you gotta work 2 weeks to make enough money to buy this particular bag/shoe/belt/whatever, that's kinda stupid.

but if you can work 2 days bring in the cash that it takes to make the same purchase, it sounds more reasonable.

so don't kill your desires. just use them to fuel your efforts so that you grind hard enough to do what you feel with it still making sense within your realm...

And stick to the functional aspects of shoes and garments... I'm not entirely sure what they did, but I was aware from a very early age of the gulf between functional differences and image differences. They'd make sure I had the best musical instruments we could budget to because it made a genuine functional difference to my experience, but they would've laughed me out of the house if I asked for a pair of Jordans costing twice as much as a functionally similar pair of Pumas.

I actually can't remember ever asking my parents for "luxury" items like sneakers... I knew friends did and I used to feel awkward watching them do it... whatever my parents taught me in my first few years left me unable to debase myself that way.

If kids make it to their teenage years thinking their worth comes from wearing brands, the parents have probably been failing them a lot longer than they've been saying no to pairs of Yeezys.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

if you buy a teen the OG Bred 1s, there's a good chance they're in their best friends' rotation too. and the first day they wear it to school, there's at least 2 students asking them their size and if they're for sale.

if you're buying your kids jordans, are you teaching them how to react to those other kids?

And I wasn't about to get no 200 sneakers but she was rocking these beat up chuck taylors with holes in them. That's what she wanted to wear because that's what the fancy kids at her prep school wear.
