"Insecure [HBO]"

The first episode is streaming on HBO GO!

I watched it and... yes! This and Atlanta on television at the same time is incredible.

I really dug that first episode.

I'm glad you didn't do that... while doing that.

I think the male characters were a little flat, in the same way the Van is a little flat. There's plenty of time to explore those characters.

And actually, I don't think there's was much of a problem in the portrayal of her hs/college beaux. I think Issa was the one with the issues talking about "I just got out of a relationship, I'm not sure I wanna jump back in one..." Girl, it's far too soon to even be thinking that. If you're into hooking up, do that. If not, don't. Leave the 'r' word at home for a bit.

You gotta peep the subtleties (and not so subtleties).

-The music is hilarious, especially the misandry laced ones
-The opening scene with the kids was awesome and painful at the same time "My daddy say ain't nobody checkin' for bitter black women no more"
-The Broken p*ssy consoluation of her friend after getting dumped. I was not expecting that to be her response. Caught me off guard and then her friend emoting what the p*ss would sound/look like. lol
-'Broken p*ssy' performance hahahaha
-Her friend, with dude on the wall's face when she was like "she's rapping about me".
-Issa hitting the dance move after dude curved her handshake
-The Asian chick saying "Jamal said I was his first"

I'll be watching.

I don't find passive-aggressive comedy funny. That 'though bubble' type of comedy (where we get to hear what the actor's thinking in their head). The same with sarcasm, snark, slick-talk, etc. Plus, there were too many race-based jokes in the 5 minutes I watched.

Anyways, just giving my subjective appraisal.

Most of the jokes seems like those that come from black folks that have a chip on their shoulder about being black, are insecure about being black, have something to prove about being black, etc. I just don't "get" that perspective because for me being Black is normal, and everyone else is "different." (that reverse privilege, lol).

I never watched the web series, but I just watched the first two... not gonna watch anymore.

It's like the first season of the Boondocks, Black Dynamite, and Black Jesus. A bunch of recycled jokes. Not that they're bad, they'd just be better if you hadn't already heard them.

Didn't know Issa was built like that either. Her homegirl was fine as fuck too.

Broke Pussy, the not-handshake, the hating on the Asian girl and her BBF = comedy

They also ate at one of my favorite joints Merkato. Ol girl really is a waitress there too. Fine. Dude behind them is on Stones Throw I believe.

Also dug that they made the "hood spot" chill as fuck, made up for the tired bad ass hood kids scene

Def a fan off one episode.

it was the least imaginative shit. look the hood kids acting like assholes, YAWN...

it says more about you than me that you found that the funniest and claiming the homegirls were "stiff and lacked chemistry"

I wonder if you'd love Black-ish if Trace was the POV character and not Anthony

work it out holmes

and it starts with middle school...ya know, where most of us start to become self aware and get very insecure behind the comments of others on our appearance, social status, etc.

Her being an adult, you'd think, would be immune to it but the kids actually went in on a few of her adult issues (career choice, relationship status, social status) and even drove it home with clowning her appearance.

It immediately set the tone for the episode:

-Career choice: you can see her wondering 'why the hell am I here' everytime they show her at her job
-relationship status: both Issa and Molly go thru it, from different angles
-social status: envy of Molly's career/status
-appearance: though she made it something fun, the whole lipstick thing and her trying out personalities based on the lipstick color was a direct b-line to insecurity...until she decided to just be herself

...and it was funny.

I dont know what her channel or other shows are like but I got the feeling this is a self depreciation type of humor. Jokes about being the awkward Black hipster type.

is her other stuff different?

does the kids in a classroom give okps flashbacks?

the shows on her channel are different. she frequently features other artists on her channel
and it's one thing i definitely love abt her
she hasn't even officially "made it" yet but she's still putting pple on

i dont know what flashbacks youre talking abt
aint no kids talking to me like that.

I feel you.

>i found it boring

See I heard about her youtube show, but I never watched/got into it so this is my first exposure to her brand of comedy. So for you, it might have been yawn-worthy but you have to understand there is a whole new audience (like myself) who are trying to get familiar with her. We kinda need that type of tone setting. It wasn't lost on me as you can see.

>i know how pilot episodes are
>but this one and especially that scene just didnt do it for

Right...it WAS a pilot and as far as they go, this was a good start imo.

>how many time must loud, rude, inconsiderate and ignorant
>Black (please notice that CAPITOL B) be used as "comic

>enough.

I could see this point if it was pite wholks who were the main characters but this is her personal insight on being a bit 'odd' in the black community. And it's a comedy so there's going to be at least a smidge of caricature. Gotta give some room for creative license and relatability. Personally, I don't think the middle school kids were loud and ignorant. They were...middle schoolers, which are by nature a**holes. But I can see you point and hopefully the show develops to your liking.

Nothing wrong with that. And the opening WAS part of Issa's job, not like it was gratuitous.

I just look at it like, if I stepped into any middle school, no matter the predominant race, I'd expect a**holery. It'd just come in different forms depending on the racial make up of the school.

This is how minorities (see: Black) would clown an awkward person in their class. I've been IN that class. I graduated college and have a career too. I don't think exposing audiences to our brand of middle school clownery is akin to schuckin' and jivin'.

But some of us feel much more strongly about the images hollywood wants the masses to see of our experience (Bonamie). I'd prefer they understand all of our nuances and us not be held to some 'super negro' standard.

Our kids are a**holes just like theirs. lol

And she gets to go balls out (relatively) because it's on HBO.

I said it was probably the only part of the show that didn't make me laugh, Even In PTP said it was well acted/executed. Yet you and others make it a point to continue to tell me how hilarious y'all found it. Cool. I didn't

Also I'm an asshole. I'm trying to be better.

The polished version of it...different in some ways, but same style of humor, pace, all that.

I do like that she has a Black boyfriend this time, but then I wonder how much of the show is gonna focus on how Black women are single while everyone else is getting married (even being engaged to Black men like the girl on there)...and how Black men don't want relationships. I'm all the way in, though

i think molly and issa's chemistry is fine, but maybe there was some stiffness in some parts of the dialogue or in some parts of issa's delivery.

i agree that the opening scene with the kids was clunky, but i guess i found it tolerable because it does set up the whole ep/show.

i laughed loudest when she sorrowfully said "that's too aggressive" in the mirror.

It put a lot into perspective regarding my single homegirls and their feelings. I saw their lives being acted out on the screen

and I see where you are going with it. my homegirls hit me up like a therapist about black men and why they single. Hence why in my head I was like so maybe its a black womens Sex in the City and they need that show. As a man, I don't think it is for me. Kind of reminds me of my black homegirls who want to "build a nigga and control him" if you catch my drift

instead of having us develop into what they want us to be or taking on the risk that it'll never happen

it can be a really difficult conversation from both ends, I dont think I've ever seen a plot where a woman wasnt everything a man was looking for after they were together but I know it happens

also I think men would rather stick through these kinds of things (so long as love and respect were there) than ever be single again, I've seen women just throw in the towel on dudes I considered to be "good" from the outside looking in because he wasnt "perfect" or "ideal" (as opposed to a bum like dude on Insecure)

i think men think that's what women want
when most of them are way more flexible and not as interested in some things as a man's own ego is
but that's another post
and another reason why the pilot and possible premise (the boyfriend) is just not that interesting

I just finished the first season of StartUp on crackle. White dude starts hanging out with a cuban girl and a hatian gangster to start a new company. His GF is like "who are you? I don't like this new person"

White dude says "I hated that old person, I feel alive now"

basically, they want a guy who is the shit but also stays home all the time and never has fun with his homies.

so sensitive to that "broken p" rap that clearly wasn't serious and about her.

but then i thought, well, when you are in a super sensitive place, something that would normally be inconsequential can really get under your skin and hurt you. and since we're getting an inside view of their friendship, we get to see molly just express her overall anger (about her love life, about not knowing exactly what she's doing wrong--is she "broken"?, about issa's inattentiveness).

with a man's, especially when it feels authentic...because it's not always about relating. Same way I can watch Godfather, OR Elephant man, and enjoy seeing someone else's view and how their personalities and experiences differ from mine.

Like seeing Issa in the mirror trying to figure out if she should wear the dark lipstick and be aggressive, or the light lipstick and be way more passive....it's like "whoa, that's really the decisions women make before a date/going out?"

This show surely does cater more to women, from the situations to the sense of humor...but I don't think anything about it should turn guys off from watching and enjoying.

My girl watches "Difficult People" and "Broad City" and a few other shows (*Wives, Love and HipHop, etc). While the writing on "Difficult People" is excellent, and the jokes and timing are great I just can't get into it, as I just don't *get* the show the same way she does.

The reality shows are almost unwatchable to me, but yet she *loves* them. Nothing wrong with a show having a targeted audience.

The show barely passes the Bechdel test.

Anyway, I thought it was just okay. It reminded me of girls that I know who think they are funny but actually aren't that funny.

Music was great. Good to see a show with two dark skin female leads.

But this show just might not be made for me but I ain't mad at it.

I'm really conscious of this when I talk to my friends. I had one friend who all we talked about was relationships. Then I realized that 1) I didn't want to have her problems in common and 2) We had nothing else to talk about.

It's a sharp contrast from Atlanta, when Earn talks about his BM twice, briefly and only to his co-worker.

Earn isn't talking alot about Vanessa because "he and Semi are in dire straits" and is trying to figure out where his next meal is coming from. He doesn't have the leisure to spend alot of mental energy on his love life (so far). Issa seems to be secure in terms of employment and money, and often, that's when your focus goes to love stuff.

That said, I'm feeling the pilot. It was pretty funny and well paced (the Broken Pussy song was hilarious) BUT I don't know if I like the way black men are portrayed...shiftless BF, the player who doesn't "do" relationships. Perhaps, this will reverse itself in time. We'll see.

I don't think Atlanta is trying to be a full blown comedy.

Insecure is the least funny to me tho, the jokes didn't hit but we will see where it goes. I don't really like these early sneak peaks tho, I keep checking for new episodes every Sunday.

I didn't laugh at one episode. The whole Broken Pussy thing was offensive even though it was from a black women.

Trying to edgy like Girls but too cliched like a Terry McMillian novel. How tired is the" I can't get a man" black woman trope.

Also, I enjoy Issa's character the most (her knockoff Toni Child's bff cool too tho) which is rarely the case w/ these series where the lead is also the creator/writer/director.

The dialogue feels forced and unnatural

The acting is mediocre, there's zero jokes to laugh at

Maybe this would've been poppin a few years ago, but in light of shows like Atlanta being so good this just falls really flat imo

HBO has no problem cancelling shows that get poor ratings.

This one is made on the cheap so they may give it another season but chances are slim.

And it somehow sums up exactly how I feel about the show thus far

It feels contrived, shallow, riffing on stereotypes, whereas Atlanta references shit we all know and talk about but it feels 10x more current and on point

I mean, Drake cards and Beyonce lyrics and all this? Sure, yeah.... But it might as well have been written by a early 40 y.o caucasian man tbh

Edit: I dont mean to BASH it, its not HORRIBLE. Its just... Not very good

I didn't think Awkward Black Girl was all that funny, great, or interesting. Insecure seems like more of the same re: repeat of the web series.

The acting and writing are mediocre.

Lol I'd rather re-watch the last season of Girls.

Might have been subversively funny 5-10 yeas ago, but you need more in the age of Amy Schumer.

This show is very much executive produced by Larry Wilmore, you want to support and laugh more but it's a bit corny and tame.

*from MY perspective.

My male mind just doesn't find jokes about vaginas, taking a shit or fucking random dudes funny. Just like I don't find male comedians funny that make jokes about their dick, farting or fucking random women.

It's just not clever.

can't i just support the show cuz I want ol girl to do well?

i aint even finish season one of ABG, it was funny but i ran outta of time/other shit took priority.

i watch Atlanta on demand, i watch insecure on demand. I'm not comparing the shows. they both have their own brand of funny. I'm not laughing non stop through either one of them, but i am watching.

my wife kinda fucks with insecure, she really fucks with atlanta, but we live in atlanta and she grew up here, sooooo.

ABG lead to Insecure, i'm hoping Insecure leads to bigger and better shit for Issa. Need more regular black people shit on the tube man.

Damn.

(i am struggling through Queen Sugar tho, feels too soap opera-y and the OWN branding and Tyler Perry commercials are giving me the gas face, literally. i love the concept tho. Father left his heirs a sugar plantation, in the south? clay davis.)

The slightly Okayplayery/awkward types, but more so the ones who are into both sides...the Playery/Soulful and the Ratchetivity.

OKP types are a bit too critical to enjoy this. All the way ratchet types won't get a lot of the jokes or humor in it. Anyone in their mid-30's or older will miss some of the references, or either won't find certain things funny.

But OKP audience is waaaaaaay different. When I see the comments on Facebook, Twitter, and GroupMe's that I'm in, barely anyone complains about the show in the way that OKP does. They complain about the characters, but never about the production or how it needs to be improved...or being critical of each episode on some "I liked this one, but not the last one."

To do a compare and contrast with the other blipster show, Atlanta, when they had the Van only episode that interaction was great.

I just think she's too hands on with the character...it reminds me of Woody Allen films where he's the worst thing about the movie because he's too tied into the world. The character just needs a different interpretation. Imho its why when the Blood character popped in it worked because he had zero ties to the plot, other characters and even theme of the show; there they were able to focus 100% on the joke.

That said, as the show presumably gets darker (because Issa's working her way up to a comeuppance) and we get into dramedy it might pay off...since we are so into her head when the other shoe drops it's going to be a doozy

Like her friend Molly is as stereotypical as can be on paper; the 'all together' awesome black girl who can't find a man. But that character breathes on screen and the actress is able to make her not seem that.

What we basically have is Awkward Black Girl, take 2 as far as the Issa Ray character is concerned when it feels like it should be different; her being an asshole to her boyfriend and friend, etc.

The reason why I mentioned Woody Allen is in his middle of the road films where he's the main dude you could practically hear Allen (the writer) type out every word he's was trying to act on screen...the character was played only as vessel for a story as opposed to being a living breathing person.

Same here; Issa's got all the plotlines but when she pops in she doesn't feel like she belongs in that world...hence why people are like they don't feel like her and her bff are actually bff.

I think its less about her being a bad actress, per say, but her being too close to the material behind the scenes, ON TOP OF, her just playing an aspect of her personality(so she doesnt really have to ACT ACT) makes it seem off.

DG has been working in television for almost 10 years on two of the most critically acclaimed tv comedies ever (30 Rock and Community).

Then he gets Paul Simms to executive produced who is responsible for great comedies like News Radio, Larry Sanders Show and Dave Letterman.

Meanwhile Issa Rae got one web series under her belt and Larry Wilmore, who seems like a great guy, but he has never been a laugh out loud type of dude.

Of course Issa Rae got HBO but I think that just puts extreme pressure on her to be HBO level of greatness.

It's not that serious but Insecure is looking extra bad because Atlanta is out there and I bet if Insecure was on netflix it would have had a nice little black woman cult following.

i cant figure yall out.

Let me get this right....

Atlanta is the greatest show ever because its like Louie and Chappelle show had a baby

Blackish is funny but its corny and its not Atlanta which is the greatest show ever and its also just not black enough so its really just Modern family with negroes

Insecure is not funny because women are not funny and its not Atlanta which is the greatest show ever

Key and Peele are not funny because they are not Chappelle's show which was formerly the greatest show ever.

Ok. I'm logging off forever.

Atlanta is great because the bar was low and they are killing it with off the wall humor

Key & Peele is hilarious at times but also corny as shit and misses the mark a lot. It definitely got better after the first season.

Insecure.. just isn't funny to me bruh. The classroom jokes were funny. The Blood shit was hilarious but those 2 women haven't made ME laugh yet.

164. "I'm torn RE: The Black Women Dating Woes theme"
In response to Reply # 0
Mon Oct-24-16 02:59 PM by caramelapplebttms

I've never lived in Cali, but I had a friend who told me she left the Bay for the Midwest in part because Black men in Cali were only interested in "exotic", non-Black-looking women.

So I get that this is a thing.

But something about having Black women's undesirability as a pervasive theme in now three episodes is rubbing me the wrong way, especially since it's on HBO and not on a "for us" platform like BET. Even Being Mary Jane only touched on this in a couple of episodes (out of five seasons) with a resolution. Also, Mary Jane Paul is consistently portrayed as very desirable to men, even more so than her light-skinned best friend.

At this rate, this show may actually hurt our stock as Black women. I cringe watching it and I'm suppose to be the target demographic.

I'm rooting for Issa though.

basically showing how those myths aren't true. Such as how "L.A. guys don't even approach women" and he says "well, I approached you!"

I get what you mean, but I think the show is already showing that the Black women appear to be desirable, and Issa has a Black boyfriend this time unlike on ABG.

Larry Wilmore is proving to be tv kryptonite.
The pacing and the dialogue is just..."off".
The frequent pussy references are just weird and doesn't seem like a fluid part of the dialogue between this particular set of characters.
The entire time I feel like "Are they really BFF's or did they just meet in college and hang out a few times" there's no chemistry between them as friends.
The show just kind of meanders along.

I wonder what this show would be like without his involvement.

Now that you mention it, I do get the same nagging "Why Aren't I Laughing?" feeling when I watch the show that I got during Larry's White House Correspondents Dinner speech.

I tried to watch a bit with my girl last night, and the dialog/scenes just irked me.

EVERY joke seemed like it was based on some sort of passive-aggressiveness: people not speaking their mind, saying one thing but doing/thinking another, petty little digs at each other, etc. Even the dudes seen kinda passive like saying one thing and then backtracking.

they captured the passion and sadness of cheating very well in this ep tho. I would've been upset if they didn't have Issa hook up with producer dude.

ol' boy rapping was funny as hell too

i really hope Lawrence hook up with shorty from the bank. She cute as hell, got the titty meat on deck, and really seems to like dude for where and what he is

Whoa... that was a doozy. Very interesting... pivotal episode.
And that conversation about black men's restrained sexuality. Wow. They went there. Best episode of the series thus far.

And my gawd, Raphael Saadiq has been killing it with the music all season.

Because Jidenna was in her bed on the weekend, as stated. And with Jared, she didn't have to work that (next) day.

What in the entire fuck?

In what universe is the amount of sexual activity an actress engages in any of your business, as a viewer, and how the hell would it preclude her ability to portray a character on tv?
