And he also carried a gun on his person often. The "nonviolent" bit is overstated by both white people that want black people to be docile and black people that want to have something to play their Malcolm X fantasies off.
Having said that, I have no problem believing that he knew how to fight and that it was also something he didn't really put himself in a position to have to do for a good reason.
