"Atlanta [FX Show]"

This needs it's own post.
The first two episodes were great.
This is what it's like to have a black show, written by real life, honest black folks. I'm not sure I've ever seen (my) black life so accurately depicted (and without appealing to middle class sensibilities). And they even tackled so many "issues" without making "on a very special episode of Atlanta." Whoa. This shit good.

My brother and I always tossed around doing a TV show and Atlanta is the closest to what kind of ideals we always had. Not the concept, but the portrayal of blackness.

as speaking english

it isn't everything and doesn't apply to the narrative structure of all black tv shows, but it's a touchstone

i was just trying to say this is "realer" than community or full house or bernie mac, but it's still got the humorous edge.

Since they aren't hiding his inherent blipster vibe in the show; with that scene it shows even the white kid felt like 'you aren't THAT kind of black' even though the character ultimately is.

I knew dude was talented from when he was with that Derrick comedy troupe but I didn't think that he was "that black" that when he got his show he would go with an all black cast and talk about black people shit.

Meanwhile that dude dropped the closest depiction of black life I know in a minute.

The first two eps were flawless.

Like those shows tho its dark and gonna be a hard sell to middle america. Less about the blackness, more about how shows like this stay niche because it's not escapist; its humor is dark and real...critics may love Louie but audiences don't according to its ratings, lol.

Hopefully white critics take notice and push this for awards to help keep it afloat.

Not alot of rating pressure, but Critics know to check for it because of Louie and the other strange comedies the channel carries.

And the critics are already in love.

The League (ended)
You're the Worst
Married (cancelled)
Louie
Now Atlanta

Wasn't a huge fan a Sunny but I'd peep it on occasion.

I was kinda surprised at how many FX shows I've been into at least moderately

The mega-dark turns 'You're the Worst' took in particular over the seasons from its happy go lucky start would not have happened if it on after lets say after 'The New Girl', lol.

They sneak in hella amount of social issues in addition to keeping it funny (Charlie's one of the goat sitcom characters)...considering the medium they do spectacular work.

Like if Modern Family is on, I'll watch it and laugh. But no real reason to seek it out and follow weekly.

I just hate the formula for family sitcoms of non-dilemma introduced first 5 minutes. Neatly resolved last five minutes. I just find it boring and predictable. Seen Cosby show, seen most of them.

I can admit my skepticism is from the unfavorable opinion I have of Donald Glover's Childish Gambino character.

The dynamic characters, compelling story, authentic locations, the equal balanced of social criticism and responsibility, and it's very well shot--all compel me look to forward to new episodes.

I'm excited to watch these multidimensional portrayals of black people...on television.

FX is such a much better network lead by John Landgraf!

Outside of being gorgeous, she's a good mix of when you know you fucked up but she still loves you even though you fucked up, but as a result she's keeping her options open but you can still slide back in there until you fuck up BIG time and that love turns into pure hate. That happy period before she hates your guts.

This is a lot of it so I'm just gonna quote the writer Michael Arceneaux.

"When I first heard Donald Glover was making a show called Atlanta, my initial response lingered on, "Uh, I don't know about all that."...I've never been quite sure what to make of him. I don't believe in measuring anyone's blackness; it's stupid, sophomoric, and, forever and always, incredibly boring.

Still, I've taken issue with previous comments he's made about black culture, most notably how he's referred to it as a "fight."...whenever I hear black people opine about liking both rap acts and emo bands, my eyes roll into the back of my head. You're not the only one, beloveds, and plenty of us can relate to mixed tastes. Being well-spoken, being educated, and not being thuggish or "hard" does not automatically make you disconnected from the black community at large. But for whatever disconnect that's been mentioned in the past, Glover didn't help his case with comedy sketches like "bro rape" or the fetishizing of Asian women under his rap moniker Childish Gambino."

Hard to hold a skit he did in college against him. Also hard to hold questionable rap lyrics against him from when he was younger.

As a dude that followed him from his college skit days, one of the best things about this show is to see his maturation as a writer. Lots of nuance and respect for his characters.

Don't get me wrong, the show is excellent, and imma have the dvr ready for any new episodes BUTTTTTTTT as to be expected the women are framed only in reference to their relationships to the men and as of yet (2 eps in) the show has not introduced any stand alone female characters.

I'm not surprised, but I really really hope that coming episodes remedy this. There are wayyyyy too many varied dynamic black women in Atlanta not to delve deeper into their lives.

yup.

and it's a little difficult to read all this press about this excellent, nuanced black show that's coming out, and not know whether this blackness is gonna include well-conceived black women. i get it's only 2 eps so far. and i get that the center of it is gonna be the male relationships. but, i'll be emotionally honest and say that I hope for this type of inclusion.

i watched the first two eps and thought they were good. i'm invested in alfred. i could listen to Isaiah Whitlock read the side of a cereal box and still laugh. and the daughter is adorable. so, i'll keep checking back in to see how it goes.

with the mother of his kid.

in very limited time, they showed that she has a life outside of glover's character, that doesn't seem to depend on or revolve around him/them.

and they did it all without diving into stereotype, trope or any heavy handed messaging.

Donald Glover on Why 'Atlanta' Has an All-Black Writing Staff
"I wanted to show White people, you don't know everything about Black culture," Glover told Vulture.

Sameer Rao AUG 24, 2016 10:43AM EDT

When multihyphenate Donald Glover first developed his upcoming FX show "Atlanta," the network's enthusiastic support occasionally exposed their ignorance about life for some in Black communities.

As Glover told writer Rembert Browne for Vulture (the story also appears in New York Magazine's new print issue), FX initially suggested that a drug dealer character live in "traplike" apartment. "We were like, 'No, he's a drug dealer, he makes enough money to live in a regular apartment,'" Glover said to Vulture. "There were some things so subtle and Black that people had no idea what we were talking about."

Glover aims to shine a light on those contextual differences with the surrealist comedy-drama, which premieres on September 6. "I wanted to show White people, you don't know everything about Black culture," he said. To that end, Glover employed an entirely-Black writing staff, featuring primarily Atlanta natives like Glover and his brother Stephen.

His goals with "Atlanta" also reflect the criticism Glover received for years over his popularity in White cultural spaces. "I know when I go to Baltimore, when I go to D.C., it's like 50-50—half of them are like, 'I love this dude, this dude's cool.' And the other half are like, 'This coon-ass dude,'" he said. "But I have no hate in my heart for no Black person ever. Because we're in a position where the system has fucked us up so bad we can't always trust each other."

Glover created and stars in "Atlanta" as "Earnest 'Earn' Marks," while Bryan Tyree Henry ("Boardwalk Empire") portrays his cousin, "Alfred Miles." The series focuses on Miles' burgeoning celebrity as the rapper Paper Boi and, as Vulture describes, "Earn's ever-evolving balancing act between his origins and a life often spent in predominantly White settings."

The show is so well-written that you'd have to think that the writers will add layers to Earn's girlfriend and include other woman characters to the mix.

we've met three women:

one is the pretty, litskint, baby momma. all we know of her is she frustrated with Donald. literally another frustrated black woman with no interior life not attached to her man

two, is Donald's momma. What she have three lines and the patriarch, the Papa, got the zingers

three, the woman who meets Playboi, and as soon as she sees he got's a little wave. claims ONLY her kids, smile, and ready to smash

it's lazy and typical

but like you said we only an hour in, so I hope some(one) gets developed.

Darius (Keith Stanfield, who I think is a great actor) is low-key my favorite now though

BUT I love the dimension and depth they giving Paperboi so far. mad props for that

>>one is the pretty, litskint, baby momma. all we know of her is she frustrated with Donald. literally another frustrated black woman with no interior life not attached to her man

we know what she does, where she lives

she's not frustrated and without a life. she's dating at least one other person and isn't waiting around to see what glover's character thinks of that. she didn't ask, doesn't care, didn't bring it up until he asked.

clearly their relationship has more layers, but it seems like she has more of a life outside of him than he does outside of her, tbh.

did you not see how she came in to the crib after the date? she looked hella disappointed.

and she def frustrated. what would you call the opening scene after the "i love you". it was beyond that moment. and bailing out her baby father, mind you, who went to Princeton.

and we know were they all live. what kind of signal is that?

and where did you get that last read from. she was on screen for 2% of the first hour

>did you not see how she came in to the crib after the date?
>she looked hella disappointed.

? she just seemed whatever, to me. it was a long day with parent teacher conferences. and if she was disappointed, that's still life outside of glover's character.

>
>and she def frustrated. what would you call the opening scene
>after the "i love you". it was beyond that moment. and bailing
>out her baby father, mind you, who went to Princeton.

if she's so frustrated, why didn't she mention it again? not wanting to fuck him != frustrated with life. she moved on with her day, and dozens of things that had nothing to do with dude except that he needed to kick in some money on rent.

>
>and we know were they all live. what kind of signal is that?

who is all? there are three houses shown: paperboi's, glover's parents and hers. there were a lot more people than that.

that's backstory.

>
>and where did you get that last read from. she was on screen
>for 2% of the first hour
this? >but it seems like she has more of a life outside of him than he does outside of her,

she has a date and a house and a career and a car -- none of which depend on him in any way. you seem to think the date didn't go well, but again -- that's a life outside of him that he doesn't have.

he barrrrrely has a job, has no other women we've seen, no other friends in his day to day life that we've seen other than dude he works with.

he's living *in her house,* he doesn't have a car and has nothing going on when the show starts.

everyone treats Glover like a bum ass nigga.

I'm not falling for this weak female character bullshit just cause she is upset her baby daddy is a broke ass nigga.

I think people are blurring the lines and viewing Danny Glover as the creator/star and not the character he is playing.

but I think they did a lot in a short amount of time to establish that her life does not revolve around earnest, and I appreciated.

obviously they gotta do more, but they did a ton of world building in two eps.

honestly I'm most impressed by alfred. a lot of the exposition was on him (half the shit that we know about earnest is because he told us), and dude carried the hell out of it.

I loved that they made her be like "Nah man, that's dumb as shit" after Earn did his little bleeding heart speech, but then the flip side can have that air of "see that's what black women do. can't support a enwurd doin' shit"

I'm diggin their relationship right now though

I also appreciate that they got a very normal looking, yet hella pretty woman to play Vanessa

she had a date so obviously she isnt waiting around for Glover to get his shit straight.

His mother had 3 lines... his dad had 5 or 6 but since we know him from the Wire we assume he has depth. And why the fuck you have to say "the patriarch, his dad?" smh... cmon nigga. Are we really at a point where a Black man cant write a scene where he has have both parents and has a convo with his dad?

Darius, I'm not familiar with him as an actor but again, you know him so you assume he has depth but he is a clown on this show thus far. Having a knife and cookies isnt depth... stacking salt and pepper isnt depth. But since he has screen time he has layers? nah..

and the woman in the PJ's... is this show called Atlanta or nah? Yall quick to say the show is real but then get mad because that scene is real. You know damn well women get open for rappers and the kid claim shit was hilarious.

Like you said, we are in hour in and from what I can tell the definition of depth is screen time.

Can Glover tell his story or nah?

like i told RJCC above, explain her disposition when she got home. and outside of that what else do you know about her

actually it's alluding to it. it's called subtlty fam, which was tying into his other moments, with tangent comments, and knife and cookies among other things. keep reaching though

But since he has screen
>time he has layers? nah..
>
did I say depth. did I? i said right now he's my favorite character. Playboi though has depth and is a unique voice

>Like you said, we are in hour in and from what I can tell the

look at you all tight already. Loved this first hour. little critiques don't mean I don't dig the shit out of it

also this this show called Queen Sugar, also southern and Black as hell, that was also an hour, the women and men both got the depth Donald and Playboi got (and there six main characters so far), but glad you think the women In Atlanta had dimension

in the end. it seems we both gunna enjoy this show

Wasn't expecting to laugh as much as I did. Donald Glover has a hit on his hands. I hope the writing remains strong and it lasts a few seasons.

Doing a great job telling an aspect of Black life.

This show fills the void of early 'Boondocks' without the absolute silliness.

I will be following this show weekly.

The dog is a reoccurring motif, but so is the sandwich (Dude with the bowtie on the bus and the sandwich Earn got when he was in processing).

This show is Black and surreal. I don't think another TV has ever done this before. #WATTBA.

it's something I completely missed on the first viewing

but it's very subtle to Darius and the dog on the opening scene, Earnest talking to his lady about his dream, and dude on the bus

super excited for this show

I dunno how they get there, but anything else would be kinda too obvious for a mystery. Plus they both being pretty cool for having shot somebody.

> Plus they both being pretty cool for having shot somebody.

Something went down that they don't want the truth to come out, but they also didn't appear to be the folks who shot someone.

Infact, I think it's pretty clear that they weren't charged with a shooting (they were mad to be charged with a weed possession).

"There is no victim" says Paper Boi

But the news report says there was a shooting and the two were suspects. Though they didn't find a victim or weapons.

Interesting to see how it adds up.

the overhead shot. The flash was on old buddy's side of things. He still had his pistola in his waist. And since none of the three amigos (Earn, Al and measure the tree) are injured, thats what had happened.

the flash was gonna be on his side no matter what. The flash comes from the muzzel of the gun. Most people shoot with their arm at least partially extended, and since the were right in front of each other, unless he shot Earn or Pap, the flash would be on his side.

at the end, when Dnald was pouring his heart out to his baby mama, was basically this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXxlTJcUs6A

but it came off fresh tho, I still laughed at the turn. Good episode. I also ike how it balances Glover's nebbishness with thst terror of a drug deal. well done.

Hard to mix comedy and violence and I think they felled here. Just didn't fit the comedy we've seen so far.

Other than that pretty good. Loved the date. My favorite part was the dude with the parking. It's those little characters this show nails.

Love their awareness that folks are looking at the woman role and the trap of babymama not getting the vision stereotype.

I could be in my dude's whip and he would be like "Yo you heard that new Babyface?" and throw it on an listen to it no problem.

Then I remember going away to school up North and throwing on the New Velvet rope CD and dudes were looking at me like I was crazy. It was all Wu-tang/Snoop/etc. in the whip with the fellas from then on.

That scene where the dudes was singing Encore reminded me of that.

He acknowledges he is a type of corny dude but he doesn't quite fit the bill of the neo-soul Dreads in a bun stuck in the 90s typical OKP type dude.

it's a catch-22, you can't really know that dude exists without being them in at least some aspect.

That 'Tobacco Free' commercial, with the spoken word artist.

&

I also don't believe homegirl, who's the fine arts major and says "Faaaantessstic" a lot, with the babyhair and fade, takes real notes like that on her HP Specter X360.

the connect was perfect

but yo, to be honest I was a little confused about that scene.

where Migos their plug? is that why they were questioning them about getting our of jail so early? were Play and Darius dropping off money or picking up more drugs or both?

and lofl @ Darius handcuffing himself to the briefcase and then forgetting the key

lastly, I have this unsettling feeling that in the end, end, Playboi aint gunna make it

There was this song halfway through the episode when they shot the cars from birds' view that was dope, it had a choir / female voc sample going on and it was some really dark rap shit

Enjoyed the episode, but the lack of decent female characters (as I mentioned earlier) is going to be a blindspot.

I don't have issues with the stereotypes RJ, you have millions of black women who take care of the households and got bums as baby fathers so thats whatever, but you gotta have women in the series who do more than exist as support beams and cum receptacles for the men. You gotta have balance because not all women are here for that life.

Like the scene in the car about Eve and Jessica? I could totally see it happening irl BUT trust and believe a woman has had a similar conversation with a man about her dating life. Women can be just as if not more trifling as men, so please show more than us emasculating men and caring for kids. We can both curse you out while working at the DMV and love Carl Sagan so show that. We can do ecstasy on Saturday while still going to church all day Sunday. Flesh out the characters.

I want more ain't shit women, more boss women, more gay women, more funny women, more church women, everything. The same care and refinement that the show has given to the men needs to happen to the female characters.

that so far with the exception of quavo, everyone on screen speaking has been a support beam for earnest (with the mild exception of darius who is a support beam for alfred and earnest).

alfred is the co-lead character, and it's not til this third episode that we finally get significant time with him where earnest isn't about to show up, or on the phone, or that he's talking about earnest (naturally, earnest calls in the middle of his dealing)

they definitely need more female characters, and to give the few that we've seen so far more time to develop and things to do. I want to see if they will. Who are the writers on this show?
