"DNC love fest underway (convention post part 2)"

The other thread is reaching the usual critical mass where it takes too damn long to load. So I hereby propose we move the discussion of the events on days 3 and 4 over here.

So what's the plan for the coming days? The headliner for day 3 is Barack Obama. Someone just mentioned we'll have Mike Bloomberg as well (mneh... strategy and all that). Who else? At some point I think we'll hear from Joe Biden. And obviously Tim Kaine will have a prominent spot on Wednesday or Thursday.

Day 4 of course is the big close, where the headline will probably be that Hillary isn't as good a speaker as the headliners from the earlier nights. Maybe she'll benefit from low expectations, though. We'll also hear from whatever VP didn't speak on Wednesday. What else am I forgetting?

At any rate, this convention really seems to be coming together. Props to Bernie for working so hard for party unity, and to Michelle Obama for a speech for the ages.

HRC

the pre-emptive plea cop

"And the reality is that, yes, we need third parties. And you know what? I would defend the rights—I mean, I’ve gone to jail, frankly, in multiple states defending people’s rights to participate. I believe there should be third parties. I’ve fought for ranked choice voting. I would love to see you guys get somebody to be mayor of Oakland, and not just Richmond. But the reality is that what you do is you start with the presidency, and you don’t think about the consequences. For you to sit here and suggest that people should vote for you in swing states is irresponsible.

And the reality is that if a Trump is in the White House, yes, we will blame a lot of things, and we will talk about all the dumb mistakes, and, yes, we should have had Bernie Sanders, who absolutely was polling much higher and is strong—we can go through all of that. We will do all that Monday morning quarterbacking. We will also talk about the role of the Green Party. If you guys are going to actually go in there and—you know, people have a choice between, yes, a neoliberal, a neofascist and the Green Party; let’s be honest, voting for the Green Party in a swing state helps the neofascist."

In response to Reply # 56

http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2016/07/bernie_sanders_backer_nina_tur.html

Nina Turner, the former state senator from Ohio who emerged as one of Bernie Sanders' most passionate champions, planned to deliver a speech nominating Sanders for president at the Democratic National Convention.

But Turner, in a telephone interview Wednesday with cleveland.com, said that when she arrived here Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center, she was barred from going backstage. Instead, she was sent to speak with Sanders' staff.

"They would not allow it," Turner said.

Turner would not elaborate on who made the decision. A Sanders representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nor did spokesmen for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton or the Democratic National Committee.

But Turner had ruffled feathers among the Clinton team and DNC. Even as Sanders came to the realization that his campaign had fallen short of Clinton's, Turner remained one of his top surrogates. She had been critical of how outgoing DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz presided over primary season. And there were efforts this week by Sanders' fans to nominate her for vice president instead of Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, whom Clinton chose as her running mate.

The bitterness dates to last fall, when Turner switched her allegiance to Sanders. The former Cleveland city councilwoman and high-ranking Ohio Democratic Party leader was among Clinton's early backers. Former President Bill Clinton helped raise money for her unsuccessful Ohio secretary of state run in 2014.

Turner said Wednesday that she and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii had been set to deliver speeches placing Sanders' name in nomination. The Tuesday exercise was meant to show respect for the Vermont senator's loyal supporters, even though Clinton had more than enough pledged delegates for a first-ballot nomination.

Gabbard gave her speech as planned. Turner was replaced.

Sanders ended the subsequent roll call by asking for a unanimous convention vote in Clinton's favor. But some of his allies remained frustrated and walked out of the arena to stage a silent protest. And later that night, false reports spread that the DNC and Clinton campaign had stripped Turner of her convention credentials.

A group of Sanders supporters -- including Hollywood stars Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon -- protested Turner's exclusion at a Wednesday evening rally and news conference staged inside the convention's media filing center.

Reporters outnumbered the demonstrators. Many in the crowd could be heard asking, "Who is Nina Turner?" or incorrectly describing her biography.

Turner and a spokeswoman both told cleveland.com earlier Wednesday that she had no involvement in the event and would not attend. But Turner arrived about an hour after it began, as only Sarandon a few stragglers remained.

"Thank you, Nina!" they called out as news cameras swarmed her.

instead of focusing on the situation

Nina was a Democratic Senator

this isn't a Bernie Bro thing

+2 Black Female, at this DNC

she was going to give a token salute to Bern, then Tulsi would second, then Bern would move to nominate HRC <-- the last 2 happened anyway

it wasn't that big of a deal to begin with

but she was silenced

IDK what exactly you're defending here

IRT the security issues

I would assume if you are removed from the speaking schedule and never notified <-- her official statement

I would assume that compounds into being denied access to the stage and probably removed from the area

stripped clearance and ejected could be the same thing as removed from the speaking schedule

$.02

anyway, it goes to my bigger point

nobody is going to argue whether she's a democrat

how is this unifying the party?

Trump sat front row for Cruz's speech

and everybody was beside themselves at how protesters were being treated at his rallies

same fire ya'll.

pretty sure this is the DNC shutting her out and using Bernie's people to do it so,it doesnt appear like HRC and them are behind it.

Especially if Bill helped raise funds for her and then she switched to Bernie...

its politics and if they scratch your back and you put a knife in theirs by switching endorsements best believe you wont be speaking at the convention.

of course they wont own it and say they forced her off or stripped her of credentials but yall niggas know thats exactly what happened when it all went down.

I would imagine a bystander might describe what happened as originally reported

this isn't a HS talent show

this event has top level security

if you are removed from the speaking schedule

without being notified

I would imagine, with secret service crawling throughout the venue

that you wouldn't have access to be where she was anymore

so yes, IMO, what happened onsite, w/o notice, was that her credentials to be backstage were revoked and she was escorted from that area

again, I don't understand what you're debating

that it didn't happen

that it didn't happen as originally reported

???

I'll let you tell me what happened

also looks likely (but i can't call it) some bernie-or-busters are championing her without her willing involvement.

but really hard to tell because i can't find much directly from her, just vague tweets from yesterday and a couple vague phone interviews.

Bill's speech tonight was so good...making that personal connection like only he can, reminding the electorate that Hillary is a real person, reminded the electorate of all her social service.

To that last point, the "mothers of the struggle" was so damn powerful. If you weren't touched by that, you have no emotion.

The planning and strategy of the election thus far has been excellent. Day 1 showing the progressiveness of the platform while acknowledging the Bernie supporters and Day 2 personalizing Hillary to the electorate. Tomorrow nights docket headlined by Barack, I cannot wait to hear it.

It started slow but came around and ended really strong. Still think since he went thru the story he should have mentioned his big mistake and how hard it was for her, would have been more empathetic rather than ignoring it all together.

On the other hand, it also could have come off as manipulative and calculating to get quite so personal in a convention speech. So they might have considered it and decided against it.

He did talk about how she put her budding career on hold to follow him, and that he hopes it wasn't a mistake. I wish he'd pushed that a little bit harder, because I'm sure it would have connected with a lot of people.

I read what you wrote and my initial impression is that it sounds like: "She's a good woman because she stands by her man." That's literally something that she said she *doesn't* do at the beginning of their career in national politics, and it undermines a lot of the feminist story that they're trying to play up.

I agree that "she'll stick by you (the country) even when it's hard" is a good angle. But infidelity is an extremely touchy subject, and I can see why they would be very cautious about it.

like its the end of the world.

shit hurts, it's ugly, it's messy...

nothing an SO does after infidelity will turn the clock back. It's really none of our damn business what a person does once they find out they been played.

The whole speech would have felt a little more genuine if he just adknowledge it like that and painted it as an asset to her character. The whole love story bit of his speech kinda made me cringe, not because of what he did but because it made the omission more glaring.

It was kind of a challenging dynamic. He couldn't talk policy, or people would claim he's running for a third term. It was a 'presidential spouse' speech, which he's not used to giving, and we're not at all used to seeing from him.

But for the most part I'd say it did its job. Middle America will like the personal stories. And the stuff about the 'made-up Hillary' is crucial.

This was intended to recapture her humanity which was stripped away during the RNC. He described the evolution of their relationship and described her work as an agent of change at a young age. That thread will carry through as Biden and Obama talk about her recent work. These speeches should not be judged within a vacuum.

i feel like at this point its been decades of smearing (since the health-care reform debacle- what was that, 1994?)
you almost never hear of any good things she has ever done
and i think a lot of it is because there has been an unprecedented level of a hate campaign
against hillary
i mean... lets just try and compare what she goes through vs what bill clinton goes through
(and most of the shit on her plate is because of him!)

how will the dems/hillary reclaim her image?

bill did a really good job talking about her accomplishments- way better than she would have
but i don't think that's going to be enough
and i think part of this campaign has to be about showcasing her achievements
all we constantly hear about are her failures (it feels like she's almost the only politician who is never allowed to make a mistake, or change her mind, or to be ambitious)

it would be great to shift the narrative from, 'im voting for her because she is the only option'
to the fact that she has some pretty good accomplishments under her belt
and we should be proud to vote for her, because despite the numerous attempts to take her down,
she's still standing
some failures yes, but i dont think these outweigh the accomplishments
(and im saying this even after i wanted her crucified when she was campaigning against bho)

He listed off a whole string of them, from college through the State Department.

The most obvious ones:

The Children's Health Insurance Program

The health care initiative, which would have become a national single-payer system if they could overcome a senate filibuster; and the plan in the 2008 campaign, which eventually became a closer blueprint to Obamacare than even Obama's plan.

The Copenhagen Climate summit, the first ever time that China and India agreed to rules on carbon pollution.

Funding for first and second responders after 9-11. (probably not a hard sell in that climate, but points are points)

Small business initiatives throughout New York State. I lived in Ithaca while she was in office and this was a big deal for the upstate and rural areas.

The sanctions regime on Iran that eventually forced them into the nuclear deal.

This is just what comes to mind off the top of the head. Bill also mentioned a bunch of other things that aren't as well known, like her founding of the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, a non-profit advocacy group that's still active today, or her work collecting evidence to force desegregation of schools.

In his speech last night - Bill focused on pre-Senator Clinton last night in his speech - who certainly is a figure that I can respect and get behind a bit. I thought she was an exceptional First Lady - and as Bill noted last night - she did some considerably good things early in her career.

However - what causes a lot of progressives to pause is her record after she become a Senator and subsequently Sec. of State. It was during this period of her ascent to power that she gained the reputation of being cozy to Wall Street, big banks, and the Foreign Policy Establishment. While this period gave her the on-paper credentials that are undeniably impressive - it's also what causes many to be concerned about where her focus/interests will be as President.

this is how we make informed decisions

i also don't think she was an ineffective new york senator
as secy, she does the president's bidding
with benghazi, we've totally allowed the gop to run the narrative
libya - yes, it was a complete utter failure on the u.s' part, and for not doing more in syria
i would like to know what decisions she was responsible for
and perhaps the rationale behind them

i will definitely be reading up on the latter period of her work

Yeah, I know, Bill's just trying to get people talking about him again. Still, I have a hard time seeing how this could possibly go well for him.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2016/07/27/fox-newss-bill-oreilly-vouches-for-slaves-living-conditions/

Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly vouches for slaves’ living conditions
By Erik Wemple (Washington Post) July 27 at 10:24 AM

PHILADELPHIA — On Monday night in a widely praised speech here at the Democratic National Convention, first lady Michelle Obama made a poignant observation about her life and race in America: “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters — two beautiful, intelligent, black young women — playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”

Within minutes, PolitiFact confirmed the factual rigor of Obama’s claim. The New York Times also did a write-up: “Yes, Slaves Did Help Build the White House.”

On his Tuesday night program, however, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly felt he still had something to add to the conversation. “Slaves did participate in the construction of the White House,” O’Reilly said, noting that “free blacks, whites and immigrants also worked on the massive building.”

Then: “Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government,” the host said. Thanks, O’Reilly, for the context. For even more context, try Jesse J. Holland’s book “The Invisibles: The Untold Story of African American Slaves in the White House,” which notes, “With the invention of steam shovels still several years away, these slaves dug for the clay on site with hand shovels, working day and night to get the raw material to the skilled brick makers and at the same time, opening up ground on the site for the space that would become the White House’s foundation and cellar.”

Bolding added to suggest one reason why these slaves were fed — they were working like slaves. “Digging up clay was unskilled, tedious and backbreaking work,” writes Holland. As to the “decent” lodging, Holland notes that a “barn” was built for the workers. Is that “decent” lodging? “It wouldn’t be a leap to say the living conditions in a barn were much less comfortable than in a house,” Holland said in an interview with the Erik Wemple Blog.

A “steady diet of pork and bread” was provided to slaves in quarries supplying stone for construction of the president’s house, according to Holland’s book, though the author cautions against any conclusion that these folks were “well fed.” “It’s hard to think they got all the food they wanted when they wanted it and all the food they needed when they needed it,” said Holland. “What does ‘well fed’ mean? When you don’t have a choice about what you eat, are you well fed?”

Presumably, O’Reilly would have scrapped the segment if only Obama had said, “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by well-fed and decently lodged slaves, and I watch my daughters — two beautiful, intelligent, black young women — playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”

Those inclined to trust O’Reilly on matters of White House history should consider the time that his book “Killing Lincoln” botched a key fact on the building.

is watching just how much fox news has shaped the political landscape in the RNC
watching their convention, so many key words were straight from the fox playbook
people talking about media bias, but they only watch ONE channel
there's a level of cognitive dissonance this is country that is.... literally inexplicable
on twitter, i see comments about the DNC being the convention that is racist
i almost wonder if these people say that because the DNC has many black people or something
and that *that* is their definition of racist
(oh and same explanation for it being misogynistic.)
meaning of words don't matter

this country should start teaching racism 101 in grade school if any progress is to be made
just mentioning black does not equal racist- but i really think thats the pedestrian definition that everyone embraces

we have almost lost the narrative on race and that means we might never be able to redress it

no, seriously
if there's one thing americans need... is to travel more
get a chance to see what cnn-international is like- and realize just how poor the standards of media are here
interact with people who just might shift your perspective on things
at least it might make you less paranoid and see that america is not literally on its last fumes of power

i truly believe this might do more to shift people's perceptions

the party seems to be getting more united with each day that passes.

Michelle really lent a lot of credence to Hill's candidacy with her speech on day one.

Bernie patted himself on the back and made sure to let his folks know that he is influencing a Hillary presidency assuming she wins, which kinda of calmed MOST (not all) of the outrage coming from his side.

Bill did a good job of familiarizing people with Hillary's story if they were not yet, and making her seem more relatable.

Tonight, Obama will speak to her bona fides, which will display how she actually has the experience and mettle to be president in comparison to Trump.

one thing they are doing well, as least with the folks speaking later in the evening (Michelle, Warren, Sanders, Bill - i can't spend time watching daytime speakers) is making sure that they allude to Trump in a way that everyone KNOWS who they are talking about without actually saying his name. it prevents the media from really putting out "Warren says Trump hates Muslims" type headlines which allows Trump to fire off shots, put the attention back on him, and rile up the neanderthals that support him.

Or did they get "No more war!" into the party platform?

It's not about thirty fucking seconds. It's about the fact that to the vast majority of this country, "no more war" is not a policy, and "national defense" is considered a crucial issue. It's about the headlines being written for tomorrow that a defense secretary who served in the administration that ended two of our biggest, ugliest wars is still not allowed to speak without them attempting to chant him down.

Once again, there are exactly two options in this election. And I guarantee you, a Trump presidency will give us a hell of a lot more war than the Obama presidency or a Clinton presidency. So what the fuck is their point? This is a party convention. Not a fucking peace protest.

you got to stop telling the kids to get off your lawn.

your stance is the same as the republicans when the house dems did their gun violence sit in.

and they didn't do that shit to biden or even bloomberg (except for 5 secs when he said he disagreed with dems on private sector being so important). they did it when panetta was talking about war.

you think that's really hurting the campaign? you think that's really going to lead to foreign policy issues for this country?

Panetta's speech was one of the most important speeches of the entire convention. Today Donald Trump literally committed treason, inviting a foreign country to commit cyber warfare against the US. And the centerpiece of Panetta's speech was an argument about what that all meant. Instead, the headline is "Radical democrats chant down their leading authority on national defense." Trump handed us one of the biggest gaffes of the campaign so far, and these idiots threw it away with no goal other than satisfying their own egos.

The fact that these idiots literally increased the likelihood of war, by chanting "no more war", should be infuriating to any real progressive.

1) use literally better. some people from the west coast did not increase the chance of war by chanting no more war. the whining and the hyperbole is consistently ridiculous.

2) everyone is criticizing donald trump today, and some criticism of leon panetta does not change anything about that narrative. nobody threw a chance away.

3) joe biden and now tim kaine are going pretty hard in identifying with the troops. you have to be pretty dense to read tonight's dems as not pro-military, and if some protestors for 30 secs earlier in the day overshadow that out for voters, they weren't really recruitable by the dems.

4) the big issue is not whether trump has bad ideas, but in the dems establishing their better ideas:

4a) reading anti-war stances MERELY as a failure to engage the trump echo chamber on a day when he clearly was making a transparent effort to disrupt the star power of the dnc seems like you don't get the big picture. it doesn't have to be in his terms or in reaction to him. these are valid liberal perspectives.

4b) people are going to be looking to obama tonight and even more so hillary tomorrow to establish the defense stance. not a guy who's head to head competition in the rnc slots were multi-level marketers and scott baios.

You know what - fuck it - if they/you haven't seen the that the policies put forth at the Democratic Nation Convention *are better* than at the RNC then there is no convincing them/you.

Every campaign in the past was trying to SCARE you into thinking that if you vote for the "OTHER GUY" amounts to an immediate and horrific outcome. I get it.

BUT THIS TIME IT'S FUCKING TRUE.

So fuck them - and let's not welcome them back. Green party needs more folks.

but they haven't been articulated this week and there hasn't been a solid conversation yet about what foreign policy will look like under the next administration. there are plenty of people who don't know what the plan is yet, and the republicans are going to exploit that.

i wasn't talking about the protestors, who have a good idea of what they don't like. i was talking about those voters, who don't care about the protestors one bit. they care about what the dems haven't said yet. those that are watching at all.

and frankly, if you can't see why people would have a problem with militarism in an era where declaring war on terror, on crime, and on drugs has contributed directly to the suffering of so many of the real people the dems have been bringing to the stage this week, you don't get it.

you don't have to agree with anti-war demonstrators on the future, but they've earned more of a voice in the party. they were right about iraq. they were right about military surplus going to the police. they were right about wasteful spending to defense contractors in the first place. they're right about the ethics and optics of drone warfare. the obama administration confirmed they've been right for a long time about cuban and iran. and being unwilling to tolerate them is how you get to a point where guys like David Clarke are able to use Douglas MacArthur cosplay to become nationally relevant.

because at this point the only thing they are doing is disrupting speeches
all this shouting changes nothing within the platform
and i dont see it as doing anything to actually raise awareness of the issue
they just look like sorry losers at this point

i mean, if they are now #neverhillary
ok. then they should go and campaign for whomever they want to
if they are going to vote for hillary and hate it,
ok, there's still work to be done post elections

but *this* shit right here?

Obama's speech tonight will be another part of his historic legacy. He's in a perfect position to attack Trump and I assume that's his main role here. Obama doesn't need to play dumb and attempt to appeal to the anti-intellectual crowd like he normally has to. He's gonna wax poetic and be unashamedly philosophical and deep. Something that none of the republicans could do unless they wanted to risk alienating their base. Obama has a chance to speak directly to the democratic base now. It's time for someone to poetically and intellectually articulate exactly how dangerous Trump is and there's no better person to do this than Obama.

I expect a historically eloquent speech that noone other than Obama can make. Have at it Barack.

with that one...

incredible speech...

Great points made by MSNBC analysts that the Democrats have taken "optimism" from the Republicans. As someone who can remember the Regan years....optimism was the primary selling point...

but now with the right's recent strategy.... Now the left holds optimism.... and competence...

that's going to be difficult to overcome.....for a long long time

I said a couple days ago that Michelle's speech was "one of" the best I've ever seen. But Barack's speech tonight might very well be *the* best speech I've ever seen.

Try and find the video clip that they played before Barack's speech as well. Blatant propaganda, of course, but that's what we're here for. And it most definitely did its job.

And we all have our differences with Bloomberg, but he REALLY twisted the knife on Trump. It was a spectacle. Lawrence O'Donnell noted afterward that Bloomberg has, conservatively, at least ten times as much wealth as Trump. And Bloomberg noted in his speech that he didn't start with a million dollar loan from his dad, and the room just erupted. Trump will not have a Twitter response to that.

I got interrupted by a phone call and had to miss uncle Joe, but people are speaking very highly of that one as well.

i am literally crying
especially as someone who came to this country 16 years ago
and feels like i grew up into adulthood here,
...so much of my experiences here have shaped who i am, and what i believe, and have allowed me to embrace everything about me
(i see the difference when i am in nairobi, and cant relate to most of my friends who stayed)

i mean, i came to the u.s with a high school diploma
i had to work godknowshowmanyjobs in undergrad, but i still got into the ivy league
i was lucky enough to have a circle of idealistic friends- shit i remember almost failing a semester because we were too busy going to d.c to protest the iraq war, or our missing classes because we were canvassing for obama in philly
and i truly believe that's what enabled me to go to south sudan and spend 5 years trying to do better - the idealism

and then coming back... to baltimore.
the week when i was walking around feeling as though i am back in south sudan
where the soldiers are everywhere and there is a palpable atmosphere of fear every day
and then this year and a half.... feeling like... i don't know this country
who are these people?
should i be worried, because i am *the* immigrant (and i will take their jobs- and instead of competing, they'd rather just blame?)

last week watching the RNC i was absolutely terrified, mentally packing my bags (trying to figure out where tf im going next-
its not south sudan... my country is in flames- if you want to know what dictatorship looks like???

this (and michelle's) speech completely restored my faith
so ya. this convention was sorely needed.
---

joe was at my school a month ago, and some friends got to take selfies with him (my friend was like, he just grabbed my phone and took the selfies himself!)
he's a treasure

The first time I was so caught up in the moment and captivated that I had a tough time really deciphering what was happening. After watching it again....the balance, breadth, and dynamicism of that speech combined with his incredibly diverse oration and delivery, then capped by those final absolutely captivating final 7 or so minutes of personal stories, his continued fight, his rising passion and conviction...what an honor to have him as our President at the moment we needed someone to steer a ship lost in the waves. Bravo.

In response to Reply # 0

History is going to treat him so well. Hundreds of years down the line if we're still here, people are going to practically worship him and think the people that opposed him were inbred backward fuckfaces. He's not perfect, the drones thing and all, but overall he saved the country from economic annihilation and went up against bias and hate every step along the way and NEVER cracked, not one bit. I teared up at his first election night speech, and I got riled up by his speech tonight.

Also, is there a cooler, more competent person alive than Michelle Obama? I don't think she's ever made a poor decision in her life. That family is the epitome of what American Greatness is supposed to look like.

So she got Biden to do a video hello to my home girl. It's a very nice message from Biden. Dude looks so comfortable and happy to do it.

And my home girl is over moon and it's gotten like 1000 likes on FB.

Biden is that dude.

That dude is a good dude.

I was really skeptical of his pick as runningmate in '08. Just seemed random and bizarre from what I knew about him. But he's really grown on me in the time since. In retrospect, I'd bet Barack's main consideration (beyond a few of the usual demographic points) was that he's just, deep down, a warm, honest, and optimistic person.

Look, I'm not excited about Hil but I'm voting

But you two??

You guys, and a few others, are taking it too
far.

Maybe I just don't want to believe anyone can
be this manipulated by this.

Or cheer for a political party like it's a sports team.

Or be 100 with some of yalls posts,
regardless if the reason.

Unless you are getting paid.

If you aren't getting paid for this, you should
be.

Ha. Nah, I think it's a pretty common rhetorical device to build up to it. It's like presidents building up to "The state of our union is strong."

so now all is to be forgotten?

Word?

And it's enough.

But it's a little funny that you have to read so much into a single line from an obscure interview, decades ago, to justify your self image.

Folks like you make me want to vote for Hillary, to make the country better than it would have been otherwise.

More specifics are needed, but this convention has ignored specifics, and I'm more hopeful than I've been all summer that the dens are laying a foundation to bring more Americans into the BLM fold. Stronger together as its been laid out this week reminds me of the Kennedy and Great Society rhetoric that was incompatible with discrimination and hate.

some of us want to actually be able to hold her accountable
for her policies to;
- reform mandatory minimum sentencing laws and legislation against racial profiling
- develop national guidelines on use of force by the police
- body cameras for all police departments
- oversight on controlled equipment to prevent the popo looking more like they are fighting in afghanistan (and which obama started)
- gun control laws

etc.

but if you want to protest that comment, that's fine too
vote your conscience

Even Chelsea knows the deal.

In response to Reply # 0

When we both voluntarily and mandatorily separate ourselves based primarily on physical appearance? Are they really implying uniting white Americans? Because you can't unite anything that's intentionally divided i.e. Black people and white people.

So it's bullshit right?

i'd say mission accomplished

i think we under-estimate the influence of america globally (love it or hate it)
and it's a responsibility to ensure that that influence always has good intentions
which is why its critically important to remain engaged in the political process
no one but americans can actually do that- act as a watchdog to the military and economic power - and ultimately foreign power/influence.
its why the rest of us actually watch the elections
we have a stake at this too

She doesn't need to be the greatest speech giver ever. She needs to be smart and specific and on message, and she needs to rise above the fray and appear presidential. She was all of those things tonight. Thought it was an effective speech-- not her fault that she was following some grand slam level work from the aforementioned three.

Can't remember a time when Republicans got out-americafuckyea'd by Dems

Considering the rocky start, Dems couldn't have asked for a better convention

When this is over Repubs are gonna have another "autopsy" like after Romney. They tried last time and got overrun by the far right. Something tells me it's gonna happen again. They'll go the Ted Cruz route and fail miserably.

Even if Trump wins, the Republican party is royally fucked right now

248. "Clinton on Foreign Policy tonight"
In response to Reply # 0

The Democratic Convention was exceptionally well-done and was a glittery representation of the aggregate full-spectrum of America. Clinton's speech tonight was remarkably substantive - and there's no doubt that she's a superior candidate to the fraudulence of Trump.

To be honest - I didn't feel the genuine electricity in her oratory - but I realize that as it pertains to oratory and presence - President Obama set the bar impossibly high. We may never see a President as gifted in oratory and presence as Barack Obama.

There is one policy area I'm watching very closely: Foreign Policy. Tonight Clinton was very clear on the following points:

(1) She took a much harder-line on Iran, saying that "now it's time to enforce the Iran Nuclear Deal." Is she implying that Obama has not been enforcing the deal? I think that's a precursor to her stance on Iran - which has always been quite confrontational and doubtful in her belief of productive diplomacy with Iran.

(2) She signaled an escalation in conflict with Russia - which has been a deep concern of many Foreign Policy experts. When the Russia-Ukraine conflict surfaced, many were urging Obama to exert military force - but he exercised restraint. I believe President Clinton will be more aggressive towards Russia.

(3) Clinton reiterated her unconditional support of Israel again tonight. No surprise there, but it is disappointing when there is no mention of the human rights of Palestinians nor the fact that Israel is engaged in an apartheid-like regime.

As it pertains to Foreign Policy - were you satisfied with the messaging from Hillary Clinton tonight?

In response to Reply # 248

But since issues like climate change, equal rights at home, and education are higher on my priority list than foreign policy, I compartmentalize my complaints about her stances with which I don't agree and will prepare to be vocal on getting her to adjust those stances once she's elected over Trump.

And while I know this obviously qualifies as "lesser of two evils" complimenting, despite my dislike of many of her foreign policy stances, I still trust her foreign policy a million billion times more than Trump's.

In response to Reply # 248

the worst stain on Obama's record is that he kept some of Cheney's people in office, like Victoria Nuland, and that combined with Hillary being a consummate hawk herself lead to terrible decisions (Ukraine/Lybia/Syria)
as you point out, he seems to regret those now (I hope he does)

in this election, the lesser of two evils talk is obviously true for everything else, but honestly, from a foreign policy standpoint, I'm afraid it's not that clear cut
the world as a whole could use a little less "fucking with Putin" strategy from the US and a whole lot less alignment with Israel and Saudi Arabia

You could sense the grief and passion, incredibly well done and so much respect to his parents.

As for Hillary's speech...if you were expecting some kind of great oration, you clearly don't follow Hillary but regardless, it was extremely effective particularly in painting her history of social justice and giving a concrete example of how Trump's temperament and childishness could play in the White House.

Great convention in general, incredible production combined with great execution of strategy.

I mean...It's not at all shocking that Fox News is gonna Fox News....But the network that hides behind patriotic duty and love of country didn't even have the decency to show Khzir Khan's speech. These fools actually played a Benghazi commercial while a Muslim man whose son died for this country, was giving true testimony to what sacrifice looks like....Who knows if this convention will help Clinton get a bump....But Khan's speech, for me, was the moment that truly made Trump look like the little man that he is...

Fox News Plays Benghazi Commercial Over Khzir Khan's Anti-Trump Speech At The Democratic National Convention

Media Matters

Fox News Plays Katy Perry Song After Khan Leaves Stage
Blog ››› July 28, 2016 11:22 PM EDT ››› ZACHARY PLEAT

Fox News ignored a speech by the father of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed in 2004 in the Iraq war, instead opting to air commercials during the speech. Fox later went live to a song by pop singer Katy Perry after the speech.

During the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, PA, Khizr Khan spoke about the honor he felt to be present at the convention with his wife, “as patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to our country.” Khan’s speech was preceded by a video that showed Hillary Clinton calling Captain Khan “the best of America” and explaining the circumstances of his death, for which he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

The Washington Post reported that Khizr Khan turned his attention toward GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump:

"If it was up to Donald Trump, never would have been in America," Khan said. "Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims. He disrespects other minorities, women, judges, even his own party leadership. He vows to build walls and ban us from this country."

"Donald Trump," he said, "you are asking Americans to trust you with our future. Let me ask you: Have you even read the U.S. Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy." He pulled a copy of the Constitution from his pocket. "In this document, look for the words 'liberty' and 'equal protection of law.'"

"Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery? Go look at the graves of the brave patriots who died defending America — you will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities," Khan said.

"You have sacrificed nothing. And no one."

While CNN and MSNBC aired the video and Khan’s speech in full, Fox News’ The Kelly File instead continued with its regular commentary featuring Brit Hume, then went to commercial as the speech began, showing slightly more than two minutes of the speech in a small window as commercials -- including a Benghazi attack ad -- overplayed it.

is it me or did Tim Kaine and Hillary have the worst deliveries out of all the prime time speeches?

Hillary's actual speech as great... but damn, she just doesnt have that gift of gab.

Tim Kaine... smh. That dude is hilarious. He always looks like he just hit the weed. I get a McGreevey vibe from him too.

curious to see what type of bump Hillary gets. DNC was so professional.

and last but not least, Bernie Bros. I dont have a problem with the shirts or even the signs.... but during the speech? nah... not cool.

I'm still in the burn it down from the inside so I appreciate how HRC didnt scrub the place of TPP signs and other peotest signs. That shit is cool IMO, but stfu during the speech.

If Bernie won would the Bros let HRC's people protest and wear shirts? Prolly not and i cant get with that double standard.

I feel a little better after last night. I may not be 100% on board but I think HRC said everything we wanted when it comes to tryong to unify the party. I just hope she sticks to her word and doesnt do a 180 once in office.

etc...

^^^speaking for Bern and his supporters, you're welcome

maybe the base doesn't have the same reaction because they know it's just words words words words words

+1, she also stole Trump's line = I'll be the jobs president

SMH & LOL at the same damn time

IRT to your reply, it's like MFers forgot who they were voting for

if this is her biggest weakness, I'd be okay with that

but there's just so much other BS, I can't believe folks are hype for 4 years of this nonsense.

edit, IRT Bernie Bros

they are part of the democratic process and party for this cycle

the signs were scrubbed at the convention

protesters were maced and tear gassed outside

Cheri Honkala was arrested

like I said previously, why aren't people holding HRC responsible for the discord?

they could have made concessions and pandered to the Bern base before the last night of the convention

also consider his demographic, <<<30Y.O., and alot of first time voters, etc...

HRC presented a platform for the establishment

some boos and interruptions during the convention should have been expected

the fact that HRC/DNC couldn't find better tools to deal with that, other than censorship is troubling

And then he forced the Hillary campaign to make promises that they're not sure yet how they could keep. Promises that might help quiet down the Bernie-or-busters (not that you'd know it from the convention), but that won't necessarily be helpful in the general election.

When George HW Bush caved to his ravenous base and promised "no new taxes", it was a promise he couldn't keep. And it did no good for him or for his base.

It's all moot regardless, because very little in the way of major legislation will get through the Republican house. But don't pretend the Clinton campaign just decided to reverse course and adopt Bernie's naively-structured platform.

wasn't too long ago HRC was championing TPP, against $15/hr minimum wage, and laughed at the idea of free tuition

"And then he forced the Hillary campaign to make promises that they're not sure yet how they could keep. Promises that might help quiet down the Bernie-or-busters (not that you'd know it from the convention), but that won't necessarily be helpful in the general election."

LOL, your forced is my pander

she pandered

and the only issue I have with that really, is why wait until the last hour of the convention to do it

ya'll so mad at Democratic voters voicing their opinion

but they forced her to adopt progressive policies

LOL and FOH

"It's all moot regardless, because very little in the way of major legislation will get through the Republican house. But don't pretend the Clinton campaign just decided to reverse course and adopt Bernie's naively-structured platform."

what would you call it then?

those items were not in her platform in the primaries

again

you're welcome

FTR, I'm not pretending

I know they're just words words words words words to her

I at least had faith that Bernie believed in those policies

whether they passed the house or not.

Have you been paying any attention at all to how this played out?

Maybe not, or else you wouldn't have been posting false rumors about Nina Turner being ejected from the convention.

They announced the compromise college plan weeks ago.

The minimum wage thing was put into the platform in the early days of the convention. Specifically, when the platform committee met, before any of the speeches.

And Hillary always supported a $15 minimum wage in certain cases. She supported the bill in New York State that was signed into law in early APRIL. I don't remember for sure, but she may have been on record with that before even Bernie announced his minimum wage position. The question was whether we should federally mandate the minimum wage at $15 nationwide, or if in more depressed states where the cost of living is lower and the economy is weaker, they could fall back to $12 (which, by the way, is still a historically-large increase).

You seem to think the Sanders campaign should get credit for STANDARD Democratic policy positions, simply on the grounds that they had LESS-detailed proposals, and they were being pushed by a guy who wasn't a member of the party.

she said words like

repeal citizens united
^^^ all HRC
yep, she woulda got there with or without Bern as her opponent

or the demand from voters

you're totally right.

the constant disregard for Bern and voters that supported his platform from within the Democratic party makes zero f'n sense.

she acknowledged and specifically thanked Bern in the last hour of the convention

the inability to do that URLY, and specifically address the policies that were being vocally championed made for a shit show those first couple of days = her fault.

MFers in here complaining about calls from the crowd of 'no more war' during Panetta's speech

so you're pro-war...?

Free community college, substantially reducing tuition at state universities, substantially raising the minimum wage, Wall Street reform (even beyond what they've already done), these have all been standard Democratic party policies for YEARS. Years before anyone even announced their candidacy for 2016.

The only difference with Bernie is that his proposals weren't very well planned out, and he had a movement of politically naive idiots who invent an alternate reality and don't know how to put anything into context.

He's taking standard policy positions, but then promising more from them than he or anyone could deliver.

He's like a mediocre basketball player who shoots the ball every single time he gets it. And the crowd cheers him for being so daring.

The problem was never that he was too ambitious or that he wasn't sincere. The problem is that he's a fucking idiot with gullible supporters.

between Bernie and the Democratic Party

in 08' both HRC and BHO SAID they would oppose free trade agreements, specifically, the Columbia Free Trade agreement

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/04/02/obama-vows-opposition-to-colombia-trade-deal/

once in office, he signed the Labor Action Plan which helped ratify the FTA

of course, we see the split between BHO and HRC over TPP given her flip-flop

Israel, should be self-evident given the BHO administrations support of Israel's continued occupation and ethnic cleansing of Gaza/Palestine

The DNC actually allowed for lobbyists to make campaign contributions this cycle

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/dnc-allowing-donations-from-federal-lobbyists-and-pacs/2016/02/12/22b1c38c-d196-11e5-88cd-753e80cd29ad_story.html

now you'll post some things BHO SAID

and yes, he did ban those contributions

but right today, his actions and where the D party is are a contrast to Bern's platform

they're saying words words words words words

I have 0 faith that HRC will actually do anything she's saying.

TPP will pass
Israel will continue to have US financial and military support
Citizens United will not get over turned

I didn't hear HOW HRC/BHO would reign in wall street
I haven't heard a plan to generate the money to invest in our infrastructure

of course we know some HRC's core beliefs
Exporting fracking
Regime change
Super Pacs
also are in direct conflict with Bern's platform, and even contradict the pandering she's now doing

but what you continue to miss is that Bern got 45% of Democratic voters to agree with him

continuing to reject him and/or his supporters is an L for your party

he brought in independents and young voters to your party

and months after the party called the election for HRC, Bern and his supporters are still being attacked

U NAH T (c)

now spin and deflect

have any real bad e-mails left to drop, barring an extremely bad terrorist attack (G_d fuh'bid (c) Tony Soprano) Hillary narrowly wins the popular vote (though she'll probably get less than 50%) and a very comfortable electoral college win.

I'm not confidant it will actually matter. Is there anyone who could possibly like Trump leading up to this....and then have their mind changed by this convention? Methinks not. But I think that rational, compassionate people everywhere needed this.

1) it's less than that, around 1.5, but you might have seen the nielson and not the numbers that include pbs.

2) it's just overnight tv ratings, which aren't the whole puzzle. for example, hillary's speech generated more posts/likes on facebook. i don't know if we have a way to track how people access content like speeches if they're not watching tv, but the millenials that are heavily dem are using those other media sources.

3) dnc beat rnc every other night...trump actually was concerned enough to encourage them to avoid watching her speech.

4) trump is a spectacle, hill isn't. i bet a lot of people who won't vote for trump watched that shit.

5) no need to sweat ratings anyway. mccain and palin had higher ratings than obama and joe in 2008. gore's dnc and concession speech had higher tv ratings than bus's rnc and victory speech in 2000.

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/07/29/us/politics/hillary-clinton-donors.html?_r=0&referer=https://t.co/twE8vzdjYC

The Philadelphia convention offered other symbolic contrasts to the party’s last two gatherings, when President Obama sought, with mixed success, to restrict his party from raising money to pay for the conventions from lobbyists or political action funds. Those shackles were thrown off this year, waving a green flag to Washington’s influence industry. Lobbyists and corporate representatives flooded the city, where much of the Democratic Party’s elite — and potential senior members of a future presidential administration — had gathered.

,,,,,

At a private luncheon on Wednesday at El Vez, a Mexican restaurant, over a dozen Democratic governors mingled with representatives from a host of labor unions and companies, among them the Apollo Education Group, an operator of for-profit colleges that has faced a series of state and federal investigations into allegations of shady recruiting, deceptive advertising and questionable financial aid practices.

“It’s business as usual,” said Libby Watson, who monitored lobbying events in Philadelphia on behalf of the Sunlight Foundation, a group devoted to government transparency.

,,,

.
At first-come-first-served seats near the bar, assistants huddled around lengthy spreadsheets, figuring out which donors were entitled to which passes to which events. Outside, a protester walked with a sign denouncing big money. Inside, two stocky men could be heard debating the merits of the different ambassadorships they hoped to earn under Mrs. Clinton. Even a low-ranking posting meant having “ambassador” on a child’s wedding invitation, the two agreed, and would be helpful in wrangling invitations to sit on corporate boards.

,,,,

The longtime Clinton friend and fund-raiser Maureen White strode through the lobby, just missing Rajiv K. Fernando, the Chicago securities trader and Clinton donor, who resigned his appointment to a sensitive intelligence advisory board after questions were raised about his qualifications. Nearby were Heather Podesta, the Democratic lobbyist and Clinton fund-raiser, and Philip D. Murphy, the former Goldman Sachs executive and ambassador to Germany, now running for governor of New Jersey.

Occasionally, as bellhops leapt to open the lobby doors for another guest, the chants of protesters outside could be dimly heard.
